Franschhoek Wine Tram Through South Africa Wineries

"For about 280 rand (roughly $16), this hop-on, hop-off tram runs eight distinct routes that each loop through eight to nine wineries from morning into early evening; guests board at a central terminal where they can grab a coffee and beignet before setting off. Riders can pace tastings (typically about 50 rand / $3 each), stay on the tram to hear guided narration about the valley’s wine history and mountain scenery, or hop off to pursue on-site activities, lunch, or cellar-door visits — making it the most convenient, accessible way to explore the region when ride-share options are limited." - Amelia Schwartz

"Instead of worrying about who will be the designated driver, purchase tickets for the hop-on, hop-off Franschhoek Wine Tram—the easiest way to explore the vineyards of the Franschhoek Valley. Choose from one of six color-coded tram routes, each of which stops at eight different wine estates. The earlier you arrive to the tram depot in the morning, the more vineyards you’ll be able to visit throughout the day. The trams arrive and depart each farm hourly, so if you decide you’d like to linger longer at one stop, you can simply wait for the next ride. Just don’t forget to catch the last tram back to the depot."

Such a pleasant experience! Absolute wonderful wine tasting with Caleb at Eikehof, great brownie pairing at Lynx and a delicious chicken burger at Grande Provence. The wine tram and wine bus staff was professional and helpful at all times. Highly recommended!

We visited the Franschhoek Wine Tram during our honeymoon and enjoyed it so much that we decided to do it twice! We did the Pink Line on the first day and the Blue Line on the second. Both were amazing and offered a great mix of wineries - some accessible by tram and others by bus. The tram estates are definitely the most popular, but we’d really recommend making time for the bus route too. There are some real hidden gems along the way - for example, on the Pink Line bus route we stopped at Pigcasso, where you can see art painted by a pig and even feed some of the animals! Across both days we met Bati, who told us he was in training. Bati was absolutely wonderful - so friendly, helpful, and genuinely interested in our experience. Each time we hopped on the bus, he checked in with us, offered great recommendations, and even suggested we visit the Franschhoek Monument, which we hadn’t heard of before. We’re so glad we went - it was a lovely spot and a great tip! We really wish Bati all the best with his training - he’s already a treasure to the team. The entire operation is so well run. Both the trams and buses were perfectly on time, and every staff member we encountered was friendly and professional. We can’t fault a thing! If you’re ever in the area, we highly recommend doing the Franschhoek Wine Tram - it’s such a fun and memorable way to explore the vineyards.

The Franschhoek Wine Tram offers a delightful and unique way to tour the region, delivering on the novelty of a tram experience that winds through some truly stunning vineyards. It’s highly recommended if you are visiting or staying near Franschhoek, and the wine and pairing tasting options are very good and extremely reasonably priced. However, it's essential to set expectations regarding the logistics and pace. Despite the name, the tram itself makes only about three stops before you are transferred by bus or tractor to the entrance of each subsequent vineyard. The main takeaway is that the pace can be quite rushed. If your goal is to visit every winery on your chosen route, you'll feel constantly pressed for time. We advise visitors to be strategic: prioritise the few vineyards you are most keen to see, and dedicate more time to them. Trying to make it round every single stop will detract from the overall experience. In summary, it's a fantastic, unique day out, but plan your winery visits carefully to ensure you get the most out of your time.

I will suggest to have a vip tour (Private tour) Yes - experience is higher in price, but definitely worth it! Best experience so far in SA! Yes only three wineries - but you are not in a rush You eat delicious food - paired 100% nicely You have time to enjoy atmosphere! Will be back 100% !!!! Note 📝 in advance for allergies, the staff was very helpful to accommodate gluten free intolerance on spot, but be careful to note it in advance. Visited in June 2025 - so not so many people! Enjoyed our time very much !

If you initially find the different lines a little confusing, then I highly recommend booking one of the tours. We did the Exceptional Wine & Cuisine tour. The experience was incredible. Our guide and the wineries that were chosen were all perfect. The food was delicious from breakfast to evening dessert. Our guide, Courtney was incredibly accommodating. She ensured our experience was nothing less than spectacular. Valentino and Taylor helped us at the station and were fantastic hosts while we waited for our tram to arrive. The whole team was great.

The Franschhoek Wine Tram was an amazing experience — a must-do for any wine lover visiting South Africa! We visited multiple wineries throughout the day, each with its own unique vibe, great wines, and beautiful surroundings. Even though it was wet and cold, the weather didn’t ruin the experience at all — the wines, views, and overall atmosphere more than made up for it. One thing to keep in mind: it’s about a 2-hour drive from Cape Town to Franschhoek and the same on the way back, so it does make for a long day. If you’re a wine enthusiast or want to experience more of what the region has to offer, I’d highly recommend spending at least one night there. That way, you can enjoy the full range of wineries without feeling rushed. Overall, a fun, relaxing, and memorable day — highly recommended!

Honestly, the Wine Tram felt very overrated. We chose the Red Line, and on the actual tram there were only three stops – the rest were done by bus. The concept itself is very cool, but the rides were extremely short, not particularly comfortable, and in my opinion, way overpriced. To be fair, if the tram started its journey from Cape Town, it would have been an amazing trip with winery stops along the way. But as it is now, it feels like it’s mostly just hype, unfortunately.

This experience was absolutely amazing! From the collection point, transfers between wineries and the drop off, so well organised and was overall perfect! We made it to 4 wineries; could have done 5 but wanted to enjoy each winery more. Lovely staff. Beautiful views and gorgeous wineries. Jona, who was the tram guide made the experience wonderful. Highly recommend!
