Having read so many glowing reviews of Fratelli Briganti, I had high expectations. Having just arrived in Florence and staying in the vicinity, it was a happy coincidence that the restaurant was a mere 2 min walk from my place of residence.
At 8.30pm, the place was packed, and I had no reservations. Even then, the manager was gracious enough to get me a seat inside (one of 2 tables empty in a very crowded restaurant - the veranda was totally full).
Service was brusque as all the waiters were busy. I was tossed a menu, and ordered the Spaghetti al ragu (spaghetti in meat sauce - always a safe choice). In a jubilant mood, I ordered a moscato to go along with my meal... I have to say, spaghetti bolognese is common place in Italy, but the one served at Fratelli Briganti was exceptionally good. So good that I slurped up every bit of the little mountain of spaghetti they served me (and it is quite a feat, seeing that I'm a petite Chinese girl)!
Against my better judgement (due to health reasons) - I ordered a tiramisu (and I'm glad I did!)... finished every speck of it, even I had to slow down after 2 mouthfuls. I have to say.. it is every bit as good as the ones I make, even if it isn't alcohol soaked like mine. Still, it's always a happy tradition to order tiramisu for dessert while in Italy.
My total bill amounted to Eur 14.50, and giving Eur 50 gave me a Eur 36 change. I'm not at all dismayed by the bill!
Fratelli Briganti is an institution - you can tell by all the old male waiters in the place. The manager is probably the youngest at the establishment (and not a bad looking one at that!).. Everyone and his mother in the neighbourhood has probably dined there. Happy diners were made up of families, friends and single, independent gluttons like myself... the place was packed to the rafters and the red faced, sweaty chefs just kept churning out good stuff from the hot stoves.
I left the restaurant satisfied and with a full belly. And I know I'll be back again at some point...
