On the Grid : Freaks on Broadway

"I have a soft spot in my heart for Freaks, as the artists here gave me my first tattoo & facial piercing during my wild & crazy college days. Freaks on Broadway employs some of the most reputable & talented tattoo artists in Kansas City. I stopped by on a Friday & watched as Cara, one of their veteran body piercers, spoke in calm & soothing tones as she pierced a customer's lower lip. The artists here are incredibly friendly & informative– they talk you through the process & manage to put you at ease, even as a needle is hovering just above your skin. They have a large portfolio of work framed in their reception area, so you have something to keep you visually distracted as you wait your turn. Each artist has their own room, so you're granted privacy as you get pierced or tatted up. While you can always show up on impulse, their artists are on high demand, so it's best to call & schedule an appointment ahead of time." - Cat Coquillette

Went in with a friend to get a few piercings and had the pleasure of meeting Cara! She was so wonderful from the start, kind, comforting, funny, and so open. She took great care of me and helped calm my nerves. She shared experiences of her own and made us laugh through the whole process. I would absolutely ask for her in the future and recommend her to anyone looking to get a piercing!

Google
I’ve come here more than once for piercings. I like their piercers, they do a good job. But they’ve officially lost me as a customer. I wanted my second lobes done, and was quoted $80 with a “$10 discount for two”. So I went to Claire’s and got them done for $30 instead. Unfortunate that they’ve raised their prices so much, I got my lip and my tongue done here for a relatively reasonable price (maybe a little more on the expensive side but to be expected for a good piercer), but now, lobes for $80? Bummer.

Google
As an artist and patron, I very highly recommend, but with any tattoo shop - do your research on artists! It’s PERMANENT. The two artists I trust with ALL of my tattoos (I am heavily tattooed), I met here 14 and 7 years ago. Caleb at Freaks has been tattooing me for a handful of years now and has always been so eager to work with me, deliver solid line work, saturation AND bedside manner/rapport, should you choose to want to talk to your artist like I do. That’s important to me as the person being stabbed unabashedly, lol, but Rule #1: Respect your artist. The staff up front is NOT what sells the place, so try to overlook them and take the necessary steps to make an appointment or to be seen beyond them like you came to in the first place. It’s the artists like 👏 Caleb 👏 and their lovely piercer Cara, that keep me coming here!

Google
I came with large group of 7 people and every single one of us left with 1-3 piercings. All of us are beyond pleased with our piercings. I definitely will be back for more! Thank you so much Ronnie for being so knowledgeable and efficient with the piercings that you did for us!

Katie Belle

Google
I'll recommend them to anybody! Got me in as soon as they could. Small wait and were so friendly unlike other shops I've tried in KC. Plus the piercing they gave me sits way more comfortable than the one I had for 5 years. Thank you very much🌼🩷✌️

Google
Cara was amazing! Came in for a piercing removal I was very nervous about. She was very calming and understanding. Would recommend for any piercing needs!!

Google
Ronnie did our group of 4 nipple peircings! Not only was she amazing with all of our energy! But she individually was perfect with each of us! She was AMAZING!

Yelp
Amazing tattoo shop. Thee ONLY place I go for any work to be done. My tattoo guy "Poppa" is still there which is frosting flakes Grrrrrrrr8 he does great work. Ronnie is a excellent piercer..she did my Septum and Tragus on the right. I'm going back for my left side. She will not pierce anything that's not a good choice. She is very honest and quick. She is a peach and professional. They have an ATM so I you don't carry cash lol don't trip they got you.. the pictures on the wall are a bit dated but kinda funny to see the kind where tats started so simple and now are way more advanced. Now it's located in the Westport and parking is a Beast. The only reason I hate going is the parking is Insanely bad. Oh yeah the welcome party is a little dry and uninterested and uninteresting I don't like her disposition. Not friendly Not a people person..I get it a tattoo shop BUT ....anyway. I adore my artist.

Yelp
Cara was amazing. So patient. Our daughter went to get her ears pierced and once she got there she was terrified. Cara spent time explaining what she was doing with each step and was so empathetic. We need more Cara's in this world!!!

Yelp
Ball fell out of took piercing and they helped me out as a walk in. Cool atmosphere and very welcoming and professional staff. The wait was comfortable and brief before I was out the door and back to work. They had an INCREDIBLE assortment of jewelry I would have loved to spend way more but I did get some spare rings in gold for backup and variety. Thanks FOB!

Yelp
Service is slow sometimes, but the staff is always friendly and knowledgeable, and they do a great job!

Yelp
Well kids I went back to Freaks On Broadway today. David Rudd did 5 pieces for me and I'M STOKED. David did a fantastic job. I love what Miguel did over the last month and I love, love, love what David did. I'm going so often that the artists are legitimately becoming my friends. From piercings to tats Freaks On Broadway is the best.

Yelp
Great and friendly service. My daughter loves her navel piercing. Walk ins are welcome.

Yelp
My friend and I were greeted the second we walked through the door! I wish I knew his name, but the man who helped us was extremely nice. Ronnie was the one who pierced my friend and I! I originally wanted a rook but because of the anatomy of my ear, Ronnie informed me my body would most likely reject the piercing and it wouldn't heal correctly. I appreciated her input very much! During the piercing process, she kept us informed on what she was doing. I will definitely be coming back again to see Ronnie for my future piercings!

Yelp
GO TO PAULIE! I never leave reviews but I was so satisfied. He knows what he's doing. This was my first time getting my nipples pierced and I was so nervous I was shaking. He calmed me down by saying I was in good hands and that it will be a smooth process. He made sure to tell me when he was going to put the needle in. I took a deep breath in and and as I exhaled he pierced my nipple. The first one was not as bad but the second one got me a little. Nothing you can't handle though. He explained to me the aftercare, what I need and how the healing process should be. Definitely would recommend! THANK YOU PAULIE for my perfect early birthday present! I can't vouch for the female piercer as I was honestly looking for her to pierce them (heard good things about her as well) but she was out of work for awhile which turned out to be 100% okay! Definitely returning!!!

Yelp
The wait was quite long especially since I set an appointment. However, Reggie was amazing and talked me through the entire process. ATM charges $0.25 which is unheard of but I still got hit with $1.50 out of network ATM fee so there's that. I came in with a simple vision and he executed well! See pic below, M.D.N.A. coming Spring 2020.

Yelp
Got my septum pierced yesterday -- amazing experience! Super nice receptionist, and Patrick's the best. Quick and easy, 100% would go back. Thank you guys!

Yelp
I came here in July with my cousin. It's walk-in for piercings. I got a conch and second lobe piercing. My cousin got his lobes done (his first piercing!). Pricing was SUPER fair. I got all three piercings done WITH jewelry for $60 (don't forget to tip at the end!). We had Paulie who was super friendly and meticulous! He takes piercing very seriously whilst still being a talkative and nice person. For piercing shops (in general across the U.S.), you need a form of identification and if a minor (aka under 18) you need a birth certificate and form of ID (and your parent/guardian needs it too to show they're your parent either by name or via paperwork). Front desk staff was friendly and knowledgeable. They had a nice jewelry selection too. Keep in mind that you must get basic and easiest to clean piercing jewelry and then you can change out the jewelry later. (For example, my seamless rose gold hoop on my upper ear I got once that piercing was healed in the photo). The basic jewelry they offered was a ball or diamond for being pierced in the ear. Lobes take 4-6 weeks to heal and cartilage takes more like 4-6 months or longer. Just keep that in mind! Note: Kansas City people/visitors seem to love Google reviews a lot more than yelp. I recommend checking out Google for more reviews and more information! That is how I personally chose this place.

Desirae B.

Yelp
Ronnie Lacy is a master at her piercing craft. She's professional, has great hygiene standards, and fantastic customer service. She educates the customer along the way and explains what she is doing before and as she does it. I'm a pretty protective parent have no issue driving the 3 hours to take my Daughter to her because of her professionalism! Thank you for taking great care of my girl!!

Yelp
I stumbled in Freaks to get a price on a touch up. I got my tattoo done there about 12 years ago and it's beginning to fade. The person at the counter was very helpful and quoted me a decent price. Apparently, if you got your tattoo done there and you need a touch up, it is no cost to you if the artist is still there. Unfortunately, the artist who originally did mine is no longer at the shop.

Hannah K.

Yelp
Got my nose pierced by Patrick and it was such a wonderful experience. He was friendly and comforting and really explained the process. I felt safe and respected, and the piercing looks incredible. When I was researching where to go I considered several shops and options, but I'm glad I ended up at Freaks and would recommend the shop and Patrick to anyone looking for a piercing.

Yelp
This business only gets 2 stars because of the lovely lovely lady and her apprentice who pierced my ear. They were thorough in explaining what they were doing and were so kind and honestly were worth the wait. What will make me never return is the individual tattooist named Kaleb. He belittled one young woman for being uncertain about the size of the tattoo that she wanted and even went as far as to say "If you want your arm fucked up go to anyone else in town" to scare her into getting this tattoo. Another lady came in wanting a simple tattoo and the same man belittled her for not having a more meaningful tattoo. He told her that her tattoo was meaningless and made her change the design from something she liked to something that suit his preferences. He looked at a drawing presented to him and asked in a very negative voice "what even is that?" These are just a few of the rude and unprofessional responses he gave these women. All in all, don't spend your money here. The piercers were amazing and for the prize you really get a great deal, but as long as this artist is still employed I will not be doing business with them.

Yelp
This place deserves a plethora of stars. There are people here who love what they do and do it very well. A group of us met here a few days ago for a residency at KCAI. Some of us who enjoy tattoos decided to get bird themed tattoos. This place accommodated us as a large walk in group. The atmosphere was chill - especially with the AC. David tattooed five of us in a row! His energy & skill made me wish I was local so that I could get more there. The gal who greeted us at the door is such a great problem solver. She is on top of everything. There was one artist who she asked to help us so that we can move along quicker. She was quick to retract because that guy brought the energy of a storm. He rained down bad vibes by trying to bully me into a completely different tattoo than what I wanted. I say "trying " because this woman understands the dynamics of a man trying to push his agenda on a woman's body. I was kind while he tried to process my energy. Can't say he learned any lesson, but that ogre doesn't deserve to take away the five stars that the rest of the staff endearingly & deeply deserve from their professionalism, artistry, and humanity.

Jaiden B.

Yelp
I've went there for 4 different piercings, and Adam has been awesome and professional each time. Even when I bring a group of 3 friends on a weekday at 9 pm. Reasonable prices, clean shop, super professional all in all.

Stevie L.

Yelp
Super helpful and friendly staff, clean environment. Went in to get a botched piercing from another shop redone and they definitely didn't make me feel like a freak ;)
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
Ryan was awesome! We came in for a walk in around 2:30 pm on a Monday and had to wait for a little over an hour but he did a phenomenal job and was super personable and friendly.

Michelle W.

Yelp
I've been to Freaks many times over the years. Having a fun day out, spur of the moment decision to get a tattoo I guess Covid has hit a lot of people hard. If you're not getting a $200 or more tattoo they act like it's a nuisance to do. Treated VERY rudely. A tattoo is permanent so it would be nice to make sure it's something you like. Well they've lost a loyal customer.
google avatar

Trisha D.

Yelp
Best friend and I came in today for tattoos and met with Joe, who had nice work posted online, and I had been here before so didn't think anything of it. I will NEVER come here again. I voiced my dissatisfaction about my tattoo and was hit with 'should have picked a different tattoo' or 'less is best' when I asked for some shading or shadowing or said the trunk of my elephant looks like a penis. He didnt seem to care and I wondered if this guy was hungover from last night or what on earth was wrong with this guy. My friends tattoo looks way worse than mine. We will now have to wait at least 4weeks to pay someone else elsewhere to get this mess fixed and looking decent.

Yelp
Walked in on a Saturday for a piercing. Staff was super friendly, everything was clean, very reasonably priced. I was in and out in 30 minutes and I LOVE my piercing!
google avatar

Kotakoti Y.

Yelp
My bestfriend went here to get her septum pierced and they pierced it wrong. It was WAY too far back, CROOKED and in the cartlidge; resulting in a LOT of pain and discomfort. So, she went with me to get my septum pierced at Supernatural Body Piercing and they took it out for her. Highly recommend Supernatural Body Piercing, and not Freaks on Broadway!

Carrie B.

Yelp
After only knowing each other for a week, a group of five of us decided to get tattoos together. Freaks on Broadway was able to accommodate us rather last-minute on a Friday evening. David was remarkable and did all of 5 our tattoos. He has such a great vibe about him, and is very talented
google avatar

Rhonda S.

Yelp
The artists are SO friendly! This was my first tattoo and Caleb was my tattoo artist. Friendly, personable, sweet...just a great guy!! Next time I'm in KC I will stop by for my next tat!!!
google avatar

Jayden G.

Yelp
I went in knowing it was a walk in and had no problem waiting my turn with only 3 people in front of me. Thought it was frustrating that they let two girls in in front of the line after waiting for them to get their tattoos done first. Then to find out that they skipped over me completely and didn't make any attempt to make it right. Just told me I would be up soon after already waiting over two hours. Terrible customer service.
google avatar

Generra W.

Yelp
I heard it was one of the top Tatto shops in Kansas. I love the work of art the did on my forearm.
google avatar

Emma B.

Yelp
I recently went here to get my conch pierced. The lady who pierced it was super nice and made the process fun. Great experience!!
google avatar

Adrienne K.

Yelp
I've come here to get my nipples pierced two separate times, as well as getting jewelry changed out. The shop is really clean and the guys who help at the front are super awesome. Each time I've gone for the piercings/jewelry change I've had Paulie. Paulie is one of the nicest guys I've ever met, and while I wasn't nervous to get the piercings, he made me feel incredibly comfortable during the entire process. He'll tell you what's happening at each step and explain thoroughly how to care for your piercings. I came in one time to change out my conch post, and he was super patient and understanding with me while I had him get me a new ring three times because the size was weird. I can't speak for the tattoo artists or the other lady piercer, but I can definitely say that Paulie knows what he's doing.

Winter B.

Yelp
The lady who changed my piercings was super helpful. She was patient with me while I was indecisive. She also was super kind and had great customer service .

Yelp
Freak's was there for me to make the worst mistake of my life...and they were also there to help me fix it! So my praise is high, and my memories are hazy, as I once decided to pierce my eyebrow with my friend visiting from LA after a few hours of 'celebration'. No. It wasn't painful and I think the staff was generally very helpful and efficient. And I loved my piercing for all of eight hours before I realized with one great paralyzing look in the mirror that the chrome bolt in my eyebrow just wasn't me! So day 2, I set out to Freaks in hysterics needing it to be taken out, desperately, I was naively worried it would scar horribly and I would be left somehow disfigured. But I was reassured this wouldn't happen by the wonderful lady who helped me unscrew the piercing from my face...and without charge! And although she could have easily made me feel like a 'freak' (no pun intended) for wanting to undo my little act of rebelliousness, she absolutely did not. She was so genuinely nice about the whole thing, and I will always be grateful to her because of it! Now I only regard Freaks with fondness but I hope I don't think of it too often after another 'celebration' for fear I might wake up the next day with a huge butterfly tattoo on my shoulder and a lip ring!

Tracy L.

Yelp
They are great!! Got my first tat there 3 years ago and taking my son for his first this weekend!!!

Holly S.

Yelp
I will only go here to get piercings done! I go to Paulie every time. Great dude super chill
google avatar

Crystal C.

Yelp
First off I like to say that everyone here is so extremely kind. Like so freakishly nice. I would come there all the time with my huge group of friends. I was always the driver and their piercer, Pauly, gave me a piercing for free because I had never gotten anything and I was pretty much piercing and tattoo free and I would bring all of my friends there to get pierced and get tattoos. They are really clean and do a lot of disinfecting before they pierce you. Freaks on Broadway became one of our favorite places to go on weekends. Patrick is really funny and everyone always makes conversation with you and everyone is super super kind. Freaks on Broadway is definitely a 10/10!!!!
google avatar

Maggie C.

Yelp
Spontaneously wanted my tragus pierced, so I decided on this place she to positive reviews. That, and I was already hanging out in Westport. Everyone there was so friendly, I felt very welcomed. Great service, and my piercer talked me through everything. People there seemed very laid back, I could tell they actually enjoyed their jobs, and enjoyed building customer relationships.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
All these guys were SOOO great!!! 100 stars! I walked in with a closed belly button piercing from years ago and they were able to hook me up with some cute, reasonably priced jewelry for my belly and my helix. Pain free all the way, I would totally recommend. 10/10
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
I went in a few weeks ago to talk to Zeke about getting a tattoo reworked. He acknowledged it would be a challenge, but said he felt comfortable doing it and we set up an appointment for 2 weeks later. 3 days before my appointment I received the following text, copied word for word: Hey Laura...this is Zeke...im afraid im going to cancel on doing your tattoo....Im not fixing big fucked up tattoos anymore because someone doesn't do research on what they want for the rest of their life....I work to hard only to feel punished wiping everyone's ass....sorry...id consider lazering to lighten....that thing is a mess...sorry I found it very rude, unprofessional, and unprovoked.
google avatar

Brittany K.

Yelp
Had a great experience getting my nose pierced by Paulie! He is super educational about keeping your piercing clean and explains the entire process thoroughly. Clean location and fair prices :) Love my new nose piercing!
google avatar

Katlyn B.

Yelp
Uncle Paulie is AMAZING! So educational & truly cares about his customers. He answers all of your questions thoroughly before beginning anything. Highly recommend him!!

Jeremiah S.

Yelp
Guy was pretty cool I guess. The price for 3 minutes worth of work was not . I would look elsewhere

Pooja S.

Yelp
i love this place!! i got my lobes, helix, & daith pierced here & 2 years later, my piercings are doing great. i came in today to get my piercings replaced with new jewelry & they were super kind and helpful. definitely recommend!

Jessica J.

Yelp
Although my first tattoo experience at freaks wasn't the best, the owner, "lightning" Rod, fixed it. He fixed the tattoo one of the employees did and did a phenomenal job and I am very happy with my tattoo. He was great to talk to and made it a enjoyable experience. I would recommend Rod to anyone and gladly see him again. Thank you for fixing my tattoo and not making it uncomfortable to be there, given the circumstances. I appreciate it very much.

Erin B.

Yelp
I was excited to get my tattoo. I was waiting in line for the tattoo artist to call me back when another customer was pulled into the back to start their piercing. The piercer asked if the red and blue nose pierce were the colors of the persons gang they were part of. This was a CLEAR stereotype based on the color of this persons skin. I got up immediately and took my business elsewhere. Those types of comments are ones that are unproductive to the POC in this world, especially during the current climate of our nation. I am not impressed and will never take my business there. Additionally, it was apparent that the piercer didn't know the customer as he didn't even know how to pronounce their name.

Amy B.

Yelp
If I could leave 0 I would. I went there on Saturday wanted a very small simple tattoo. Was told by the Tattoo artist Joe that was practically impossible. Was telling me to give my opinion but anytime I would ask about the sketch maybe being altered I would get told it was dumb. It was basically you're doing this right here or nothing. very very rude. Absolute worst tattoo experience. He was extremely rude to the couple before me As well in the lobby because they couldn't get the ATM to work. I knew I should of left. Now I'm stuck with a HUGE hideous tattoo until it heals. how did he mess up so bad? Was it on purpose because I was questioning him? I'm embarrassed to even show people. I don't understand how he simply has a job there. Please spend your money else where !!

Brittany W.

Yelp
Paid good money for an unfinished mistake filled tattoo. Two weeks later ask for my "complintary " color filling if the color didn't stick. I ask to get the tattoo finished at this time and was never reach back to.
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
Got a small tattoo here, overall felt it went well. Really no complaints about the quality or the service in general. Though I wish the artist didn't argue with me about the direction I wanted the tattoo to face. It was my first time getting a tattoo, I was very nervous, and felt pressured to get it the way he suggested. Though I don't regret the tattoo, or regret getting it there, I do wish I fought him more so I could have exactly what I wanted. After sharing my experience with others, I found I am not the only one who has experienced this.
google avatar

Jess B.

Yelp
I came here to get my nipples pierced because I had heard good things about the place and knew a few people who had been to this shop for something or another. When I came in, I signed the papers, told them what I wanted and then sat down to wait. When my wife and I sat down, the man at the front counter started asking us weird questions, while riding a skateboard around the lobby. At first it didn't bother me much, but then he asked us "how do your families feel about you being gay?". That is not okay at all. Not only is it inappropriate to ask someone you don't know questions like that, but to do it WHILE you're working makes it 10x worse and makes you look completely unprofessional. I started to ignore the man and since I already drove all the way here, I continued to wait for my turn. When I was called to the back, the woman was very nice and the piercing room looked pretty clean. She told me that she was a freehand piercer and didn't use clamps, which I didn't think would be an issue so I said okay and she started her process. It went by fast and then she explained the after care and things like that. But when I got home and got to actually look at my piercings, I noticed that this lady completely messed up my left nipple piercing. The bar was so far up it wasn't even close to being even in the middle of my nipple and looked like it would completely come through my skin if I even tugged a little on it. I would not recommend this place at all.

Emily C.

Yelp
Decided to go with my friends to get a piercing and ended up beating a big rush on a Tuesday. Paulie was great and put us at ease immediately with his stories and humor. Although there were people waiting, he made sure to take the time we needed and answer any questions we had. I will be returning for sure.
google avatar

Julia E.

Yelp
I did walk in for a piercing. Granted I was there on a Monday afternoon. Had a small bit of a wait but Paulie was awesome.
