We absolutely loved our stay at The Frederick House in Staunton, Virginia. From my very first phone call, I could tell this would be special. I spoke directly with Ross, the owner, and learned that he and his wife have been caring for this historic property for nearly a decade and it truly shows. They are incredible stewards of this place.
Our room was beautifully appointed. “Quaint” is the perfect word for it: charming, comfortable, and spotless. Everything worked exactly as it should, which is all you want in a historic inn. And the location? I cannot emphasize this enough: the location cannot be beat. You are literally in the heart of downtown Staunton. You can walk everywhere: restaurants, shops, museums, live theater. For anyone taking a road trip through this part of the country, Staunton itself is a gem, and staying at the Frederick House puts you right in the center of it.
The Wi-Fi was a pleasant surprise as well. It was very strong and dedicated to each building, so if you need to get some work done while traveling, this place makes it easy.
Breakfast was fantastic. The homemade strata and the ham-and-cheese pie were delicious (and baked from scratch—I watched Ross working on them myself the day before!). There is clearly a lot of love in how this place is run. They do the “bed” part and the “breakfast” part exceptionally well. Speaking of breakfast, Vivian—our server—was wonderful. Warm, welcoming, and the kind of person who immediately makes you feel at home. They are a great source of information for the area and are happy to chat!
The bed itself was one of the most comfortable I’ve slept in for quite a while and we had just stayed at an Embassy Suites in Knoxville the night before, so that says something.
One more thing worth noting: Ross and his wife also run a local cat rescue. If you’re a cat lover, Ross would be thrilled to chat with you over breakfast or when you check in, I’m sure!
Overall, a truly wonderful stay at a historic property run by people who clearly care. If you have reasonable expectations for what a true bed-and-breakfast is—a place with character, charm, warmth, community, and comfort—you will not be disappointed. The Frederick House gets our highest recommendation, especially for those of us who appreciate walkability, personal touches, great conversation, and a good night’s rest. We will absolutely be back.
