First time here. Food was delicious and large portioned. Great flavor on the pastas! Staff is very welcoming and friendly!

Fred’s Pizza serves very delicious food. Even though it was carry out, their restaurant was a nice size to sit down and have a drink while watching a game at the bar. My wife and I had ordered the Hawaiian and the Margarita pizza along with the deep fried portabella mushroom as an appetizer. We will be coming back again. Thanks Fred’s Pizza!

UPDATE: my wife and I came back to try Fred's again. This time we stuck to what they are known for - pizza. And this time they delivered in spades. We had a deluxe pizza and my wife added green olives to half. The ingredients were fresh and nothing looked like it came out of a can. Very tasty, one of the best pizzas we' ve had in GR. If you stick to pizza we can highly recommend this place! First review: It was my first visit to this place. My wife had chicken tenders that were thin, dry and hard as rock. Soft drink tasted off and replacements tasted the same. My sub was ok, but the bread did not taste fresh. Overall a underwhelming experience. Bright spot was the server. She was wonderful. Sorry I can't recommend this place.

Google
Great food :-) I got an Italian sub, and it was packed with toppings. I had to pretty much eat it with a fork and knife it was so thick! Good stuff. We also had appetizers, deep fried mushrooms and deep fried cheese ravioli, both good stuff. Came out super fresh and hot, The waitress was very attentive. We decided on dessert and they were amazing. I had the turtle cheesecake, my spouse the chocolate mousse pie. Wowsers! Even if you just want dessert, this is the place to hit!

Google
It's a treat to find a restraurant who serves an Eggplant Parmesan sub. It was a to go order and should have looked before leaving the premises. My sandwich was very burnt. My dog loved it. How can any Chef allow this?

Delicious home style Italian-American food, warm welcome, generous portions, vegan cheese and other vegan options make Fred's Italian Restaurant a great choice. Some of my favs are Brussels sprouts ( savoury, bacony and delicious) which sometimes don't make it home they smell so good! Ravioli is succulent and cheesy. The Cobb salad is big, cold and makes 3 meals for me!

I like to go to places that has a mix of young and older people as it tells me the place it current. So we ate there Saturday night and ordered the 16” pizza (were told they are only $9 on Monday and Tuesday) along with a pasta dish. He is the great part our server, Meghan (hope I spelled it correctly) after I told her I had some surgery and couldn’t eat anything large like a sandwich so I wanted the Chicken Parm. She suggested, since the chicken pieces are rather large, I should order the Alfredo and she would have the kitchen cut up chicken into bite size pieces and put it on top. She then had the kitchen toast the bread so it would be easier to eat. The Alfredo was tremendous not an over bearing sauce and the chicken pieces were cut rather perfectly and easily mixed into the dish. It was so nice to have a server actually listen to what is going on and make a great suggestion to make your, or in this case mine, dining experience pleasant. Thanks Meghan for the help.

Google
Nice Italian restaurant and sports bar. Good service. Multi-generational family owned. Full bar with happy hour offerings. Known for their pizza, but they have a nice selection of subs and pastas as well.

Yelp
My husband and I split the Stromboli and onion rings. Onion rings were a little under done but the Stromboli was delicious. Beer was ice cold and drinks were priced reasonably. The bartender was extremely friendly and prompt and the atmosphere was was super laid back. It's much bigger inside than we'd thought. Some of the pasta dishes delivered around us looked so so. Desserts looked amazing but we were too full. We'd definitely go back for the pizza or Stromboli and maybe try a sandwich!

Yelp
We were talking about pizza with friends and Fred's was mentioned. I've probably driven past Fred's Sports Bar a hundred or more times and never thought to go there. In the mood for pizza, we decided to give Fred's a try. We arrived as they were opening for lunch and checked out the menu before ordering our pizza. Further complicating things, there are enough things on the menu to bring us back. Pizza had a great crust and I really liked the sauce as well. Sausage was some of the best I've had on pizza in the Grand Rapids area. My wife wasn't too impressed with what she thought looked like canned mushrooms until she took her first bite. Mushrooms were fine! If was fun looking around to see what the rest of the lunch crowd ordered-mostly sandwiches or subs. I had my eye on a meatball sub that went past me. Probably will order on our next visit. Set up in a sports bar style, it could be fun to watch a game here. Service was friendly and responsive. It was about time we ate at Fred's Sports Bar and Italian Restaurant.

Yelp
Fred's has been around since, well a long time. The food here is great, pizza as well as the other dishes such as pasta or sandwiches. We ate there Saturday night and what stood out was our server, Meghan ( I hope that's how she spells her name) who was more than helpful. I had some surgery last week and trying to eat pretty much anything like pizza or large sandwiches was off limits . I explained the to Meghan as I ordered the Chicken Parm. She explained to me that this may be difficult to eat as the pieces are pretty big and suggested I order the Alfredo and she would have the kitchen cut some chicken up in small pieces to add on top. She also had the kitchen not over toast the bread so it would be easier for me to chew. Both of these suggestions worked out phenomenally well. It was nice to have a server who not only listened to me but also made a suggestion that fit my situation. It was a great dining experience even though I'm still not feeling 100 %.

Yelp
Get the pasta special and thank me later. Cheese, sauce, and deliciousness three different ways for less than a drink in Vegas or Nashville. Unassuming, but worth the drive! Service was so friendly and helpful. Eat local

Yelp
Hidden gem for pizza and Italian food even though it's been near this location for50 years ,if you are a northender you know about Fred's though it's now run by Fred's son Sam . Great early week specials like 8.99 for a large one item pizza , 7:45 for spaghetti Monday and Tuesday Lasagna specials. Great sports bar feel with center bar and tv's all around . Classics like pizza , subs , and Italian favorites along with burritos and other fare . Say Hi to Sam in the kitchen as he's still cooking after working there as a kid . Always great service too !

Maaggie G.

Yelp
Took my family here for dinner on a week night. The inside has been redone in recent years. Kind of a dark industrial feel. service started out exceptional! appetizers came out fast & then we waited quite a long time for our food. Didn't see server during the wait. The food flavors were good. the pizza toppings were high quality besides the canned mushrooms but they were just laying on top so every time you pick it up, everything falls off. after we received our food our server went MIA. Never checked back. had to ask the hostess for boxes & the check. We had somewhere to be and unfortunately with the bad service this outing was much longer than it should have been. the restaurant was not busy. Quite disappointing in a time where eating out is few & far between.

Yelp
Friend convinced me to try after I'd not been here in ages. Got a Stromboli to go (gave them an hour to make it, too-since I was getting carry out). Dough was absolutely raw. Pity, as if it were cooked, I'm sure it would've been good. Oh well.....

Yelp
I have now been here a couple times to try a couple specials they have on certain days. On a Monday, I tried the spaghetti dinner and my wife tried the chicken Alfredo (not on special). She liked the Alfredo and I got some the next day for lunch. I thought it was very good. When it came to the spaghetti, I would have liked the sauce to be a little sweeter. But it was good. Also tried the fried portobello mushrooms. I've come to the conclusion that I like the smaller button mushrooms better. They were good, just a little to crunchy for my taste. We then went on a Tuesday for the lasagna special. Seemed like the same sauce as the spaghetti. Not better, just could have better for my personal taste. The garlic bread that comes with the dinner is super tasty. It was clean. A lot of TV's to watch. Staff was very nice and on top of things.
google avatar

Renee J.

Yelp
It's been awhile, so I dropped by for Tuesday dinner. Tonight's special Lasagna with garlic bread $10.99, regular menu price $13.99. Enjoyed a nice serving of Louis Martini Cabernet, $10, very reasonably priced. Lots of garlic bread and a huge serving of lasagna with lots of tasty sauce and gooey melted cheese. Seems to be consistently very good. Looking forward to enjoying leftovers tomorrow night's dinner.
google avatar

Deb S.

Yelp
Really great pasta dishes! They make their own sauce. Good subs too! Very nice staff. Restaurant is clean.

Yelp
Oh boy where do I start. I use to go to Fred's all them time years ago before he passed. I loved it. I went a bunch after he passed. Same old great home style food a good prices. Then some idiot decided to get in on the "concrete floors and tin" decoration. Yet they turned the old Chinese restaurant next door into there new eating area. We have tried it multiple times. It's uninviting, cold atmosphere (not temp cold) The food is really expensive now. And the service is truly horrible. How they could take a such a great place and destroy it a mind blowing stupid action. Another brain child probably from a millennial who thinks they know it all. No worries about me going in an again that will never happen also a little confused about what the wait staff was/is. They destroyed an icon. Idiots

Heidi W.

Yelp
First time dining in at Fred's and I loved the atmosphere! March Madness was going on so they were abuzz with laugher and good cheer. As busy as they were, our service was pleasant, attentive, and pretty quick. And the pizza? Fuhgettaboutit! I could not stop eating it. Fresh toppings, and tasty. Is the sausage homemade because the burst of fennel seeds was amazing! Can't wait to return and bring out of town guests. We are happy to have moved to the neighborhood and have Fred's in our backyard now!

Yelp
Good food, friendly service. NE side staple. Our entire family Loves the pizza, subs & pasta meals!

Renee K.

Yelp
Worst pizza ever! crust under cooked and soggy. massive amounts of chopped vegetables which you could literally scoop off by the handful. Never buying again.

Yelp
A GR classic, multi-generational family owned with a recent renovation. If you like homestyle classic italian-american food with good prices and long-term staff you can't find better. I've been a fan for twenty years and have my son hooked on their penne Ala Angela (penne, white creme sauce with ham, peas, and tomatoes). Fresh homemade chicken noodle soup is a must. The meatball sub is top tier (order it on garlic bread). Fred's supports their community, and treats everybody like regulars.
google avatar

Yelp
Fred's is underwhelming to me. They're a local favorite, but I think it's more because of longevity than quality. Fred's pizza is just ok, but it's not excellent to me. The bread/crust is dry and not very flavorful (rather cardboardy). Toppings are skimpy. The last time I got delivery, it was a medium pizza with toppings at $1.40/ea. That's a pretty steep topping charge for how sparse they are. And i thought "garlic" meant fresh garlic cloves, not $1.40 for some garlic crush from a jar. My mistake, I guess. I also ate-in one time and ordered their eggplant parmesan (one of my fav Italian dishes, so Im a tough critic). It was wayyyyy too much red sauce and heaps of cheese and very bland and mushy, I'm not sure there was even any eggplant in it... There are much better pizza/Italian food spots in GR nowadays. This one is maybe a bit stuck in the past. And in recent years, it's gone more the way of loud sports bar/mediocre pizza joint, a la Uccello's. Just not my type.
google avatar

Caroline H.

Yelp
I haven't been to Fred's in quite some times and I stopped in for a late lunch. The updates are really nice, but I felt like the charm of the restaurant was lost with the renovations as it just likes like any other sports now with a lot of TVs (and noise). My server was very nice and walked me through her favorites on the menu. I'll be back and hope to try out some new things.

Yelp
We ordered late on a Thursday, last order of the night. I got there to pick it up and everyone was friendly and welcoming. The cashier even opened the bag to make sure everything was in it for me. When I picked up the bag, they had put a pizza board in the bottom of the bag so my dinners wouldn't tip over on the way home. It's the little things! Then the food- fettuccine Alfredo with shrimp was a good! sized portion, creamy and yummy, the spaghetti with meat sauce was huge and had enough sauce on it to cover all those noodles! Garlic bread, cheese stix and onion rings were also really good! SO glad we moved back to the neighborhood and can get Fred's again.

Yelp
For a small hole in the wall Italian restaurant, I was actually super impressed and content with my first visit. Driving up to the restaurant I was a bit nervous because it almost seemed like a bar... but it had a family like vibe when you walked into it, and after a long day as a tourist in Grand Rapids, the feeling was surely appreciated. Although the setting is dull and the vibe quiet, the atmosphere was warm and relaxed. After a long day, it was perfect. Our table ordered a pizza and salad to share and it was delicious. Tons of cheese and toppings ON BOTH the salad and the pizza. The pizza crust may have been a bit burnt but I still liked it a lot. I would also highly recommend trying their chicken noodle soup, definitely one of the best I've had. Overall: SCRUMPTIOUS (Please see my photos!) Our server was wonderful, kind, and patient from beginning to end. At the end of our dinner we ordered cannolis and a cheesecake and she even topped them off with extra chocolate drizzle. Assuringly top of the line service. My expectations for Fred's were definitely exceeded and I can't wait to come back. A true diamond in the rough.

Barbara G.

Yelp
Today was my first time at Fred's. I sat at the bar and ordered spaghetti and meatballs...most delicious! As is the house made garlic bread, and coffee. I'll be back soon!

Yelp
We were gifted $30 to Fred's as a baby gift and finally used it tonight for an easy delivery meal! I can't believe how fast it was to get our dinner. We ordered over the phone at 6pm on a Friday night and were sitting down to eat by 630pm! Phone person and delivery person were both super friendly and prompt. I needed a healthy fresh dinner after all our holiday bingeing so I opted for the Chef's Salad....I know...Who actually orders a salad from an Italian restaurant?! But really, it was huge and piled so high with toppings, I couldn't even see the lettuce. That's what I call my kind of salad. There were green olives, finely diced white onions, rolls of ham, massive amounts of cheese, diced tomatoes and a mix of romaine and iceberg lettuce. I didn't even use the balsamic dressing because there was enough flavor with all the toppings. The only negative was they didn't pack me a fork (or napkin, now that I think of it) but that's a minor detail. My husband got the chicken parmesan sub and mozzarella sticks. The sub was also packed full of chicken tenders - I think we counted 7! It was a messy sub and fell apart when he picked it up so, again, a fork was needed. There were a few fatty pieces on the chicken so he picked those off as well. I'd definitely order delivery from Fred's again and I'll be having leftover salad for lunch again tomorrow!

Yelp
Cant say enough good things about the entire experience! We had a large family gathering for a funeral and we had over 40 people that we were looking to feed. We called around and Fred's was the most inviting and accommodating on the phone. We only gave them about an 1 hour heads and they had all of the tables ready, and the orders hit the tables within minutes of our arrival. The staff was awesome, and prompt and the food was great! I'm now a forever frequent Fred's customer! Great staff! All restaurants should treat their customers in this manner! We all will be back!

Terrie G.

Yelp
Service and food were great. Ordered cannoli for a last minute pick up. They had them ready in no time and they were very pleasant about it.

Dan B.

Yelp
Went to Fred's for pizza and it was terrible. You can buy a frozen pizza, or a take and bake at a grocery store and it would be better. The pizza crust was flat and over baked, the sauce had no flavor and was barely there even though we asked for extra sauce. We ordered the veggie pizza, and my biggest complaint there is canned mushrooms. That and an huge amount of green and black olives is not appealing. On the plus side, the servers and service was great.

Yelp
I used to frequent this place growing up. It has been years since I visited but I decided I wanted to go there again. I ordered a small 10" pizza and a coke. I swear I thought the pizza was still bubbling when the waitress sat it on my table. It was hot and fresh out of the oven. It tasted like I remembered many years ago. Just delicious! I have been ordering pizza delivery for so long that I forgot just how good a fresh pizza out of the oven tasted. A week later I went ahead and stopped in again. Same results. I may have to start a new tradition. Thursday night Fred's Pizza night! Nice work Fred's! You did not disappoint!

Craig S.

Yelp
The meal was an embarrassment to our community. Soggy bad tasting pizza sandwich. Overdone deep fried mushrooms. Bagged deep fried onion rings. Chips & cheese; chips were like eating wood. Blue cheese dressing was Gordon's blend of mayo, vinegar & ranch dressing. On the bright side: Clean restaurant, clean tables, inviting environment, friendly wait staff, quick service.

Yelp
Fred's used to be our go to place for an Eggplant Parm sub. It used to be a semi-cosy diner where we could sit down enjoy a good meal and talk to each other. We stopped in last night only to find a sign on the door directing us next door. I should have listened to the customers walking out who were muttering that it was really noisy. Fred's has moved to the space next door and is now a Sports Bar with all the noise and charm of Buffalo Wild Wings. There may be room for one more big screen on one of the walls. I had a chance to watch total smack down wrestling on not one, but two big screens while my husband watched golf on the screens behind me. It was, of course, too noisy to hold a conversation. The concrete floors and exposed beams really knock the sound around. What used to be a delicious sub sandwich with thick slices of fried eggplant is now served on a bland white sub roll. The eggplant was barely detectable. We will not be back.

Yelp
You drive up and down Plainfield and sometimes you don't it see because it is so part of the neighborhood but Fred's Italian Restaurant is a great place to eat. My wife is a vegetarian purist and their gluten free pizza meets her very high standards. I get the Chicken Parm Dinner and it literals serves as 3 meals because of it size!!! On top of all this, there is a great family who owns and runs the place!! A slice of Italy right here in GR!!

Ken B.

Yelp
Got pizza for the first time from Fred's, hoping that it might be better than the other half dozen or so pizza places we've tried here in the Grand Rapids area. None of them have been even close to what we are accustomed to in the Connecticut and New York area - the best pizza you'll ever taste. Perhaps people in Grand Rapids are just used to a different style pizza. And Fred's is no better. Way too much sauce. The dough is too thick all the way through. And the pizza dough doesn't have that mix of crispy, crunchy, chewy. Taste like frozen pizza you get from the supermarket. The search goes on. Or better yet, I may have to call back home and have it shipped to me from the Northeast! And their box is 6 years old. What do you suppose that means?! Any suggestions for good NY style pizza?

David K.

Yelp
New remodel and they went ham with the diffusors, one mega rtu with a pretty clear supply/return on top of the bar (nice clean install), and then another small one which seems redundant. It seems like there are too many diffusors, just so many diffusors. 6" duct also just looks like tin foil; contractors had to bend it to fit the diffusors in. I'll hand it to em' for distributing the air, but hell if it seems like unnecessary excess.

Yelp
My best friend's mom passed away a few weeks ago, and family members wanted to gather for a meal after the visitation. A few friends decided to provide them with dinner for their group of 45 family members. We chose to order food from Fred's, and we were so impressed! From the process of ordering the food, to the packaging and pick up process, everything was top notch. The family said that the food was amazing, and they appreciated it so much. We ordered salads, chicken fettuccine Alfredo, penne with meat sauce, garlic bread and party pizzas. It was more than enough food, and family members were even able to take leftovers home for additional meals. Thank you to Fred's for helping to make a sad time a little better!

Kevin M.

Yelp
We eat here often. Great food and great service. Pizza is outstanding as is the pasta and burrito. Staff is friendly and the owner supports the local school teams.
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Food was great. Service was great and it was busy. The Manager Jade was awesome! We will be back.
google avatar

Bernice S.

Yelp
They should take the word Italian out of their name. The marinara sauce is absolutely tasteless. The meatballs tasted like breadcrumbs. The garlic bread was barely toasted and garlic-less. 60$ worth of food that went into the garbage. Never again.
google avatar

Ellen B.

Yelp
Just visited the sports bar. Was very impressed. Very upscale interior and atmosphere. Food great. Will be back. Great neighborhood place to go
google avatar

Courtney T.

Yelp
This was a while ago and still haven't been back. Sharing my review off of facebook...There were bristles on my boyfriends sub and they acted as if it was no big deal. She said it happens all the time. She said it was bristles from the brush that clean the crumbs out of the oven. And said it wouldn't hurt us if we ate it. I obviously lost my appetite after seeing him spit that out and asked to speak to the owner because I didn't want to bring the rest of my food home. Just in case there was any in mine that I haven't gotten to. And she was completely rude. Never apologize said she wasn't a mind reader....when I asked to speak to the owner. Horrible food and service. Never coming back. I would give a 0 star rating if I could.

Yelp
I am always looking for delivery options in the Plainfield area. I decided to give both Fred's Italian and Eat Street a try! There's a two dollar delivery charge which is negligible. The Eat Street app was straight forward, gave me all of my ordering options and checked me out sent me a follow up email confirmation and 56 minutes later my door bell rang! Good on ya Eat Street! I ordered Fred's wet burito and my dining partner ordered the fettuccine Alfredo pasta bowl. Both meals were well packaged and the meals were good and hot! Both meals were tasty and met my expectations! I will be exploring more of Fred's menu in the near future!

Kyle P.

Yelp
Fantastic burger! Patty was seasoned well, veggies were fresh and crisp. Overall flavor was delightful. The jalapeno deep fried ravioli was full of flavor and a great starter. Bar staff was active and welcoming! Great environment, Projectors and TVs within view from almost every seat!
google avatar

William C.

Yelp
They throw a very solid pie. Good crust, great sauce, lots of toppings with the right amount t of cheese. The sandwiches are excellent. I especially love the Fred's sub and their famous meatball sub, which is big enough to share. Their Eggplant Parm sandwich is also pretty amazing. I have only tried one pasta dish, the Bruschetta pasta, which was good, but could have used a bit more basil and garlic. A friend had the lasagna and said it was excellent. The staff is/was friendly and efficient. I am looking forward to when it re opens for dine-in.
google avatar

Ed S.

Yelp
I went to Fred's to get some cannoli's new to the area and they came up on the google search. Maybe the rest of the food is better but not the cannoli's I ordered 6 to take home. The shells were soft and frankly damp probably been in the cooler for far to long. not creamy at all the filling was very pasty. The decorative cherry on the ends was a cross between a maraschino and a sugared version that simply did not add any value or taste. You live and you learn may come and check out the pizza but I will just have to find another place for cannoli's

Brenda S.

Yelp
We were at the bar and being totally ignored. When i spoke up I got one of the worst looks ever from the bartender and then we were ignored until I spoke to the manager that we were not getting service. I have never had this bad of service at a place in Grand Rapids ever. Will most likely not ever return and will not recommend this sports bar. It is a shame because I was excited to see that they renovated and was hoping it would be a place to stop by often.
google avatar

Irving C.

Yelp
The food here is awesome and the waitress was extremely helpful. I would recommend the chicken dish it's very delicious. The restaurant is also very clean.

John B.

Yelp
Great food and friendly staff who are making the best of tough times; couldn't ask for more! Took my son out here to grab a "burger". I put that in quotes because we're both gluten free and he's been enjoying veggie burgers lately. We found both a delicious GF bun (not a lettuce wrap) and savory veggie burger here; plus tasty fries and onion rings as well as a couple hard apple cider options (closest I get to a good beer). Love this place and will definitely return.

Holly B.

Yelp
Worst "Italian" food I've ever had! This food is far from "Italian", it's honestly like the knockoff brand of Vitalies with zero flavor. We ordered delivery, didn't get some of our food, no napkins or silverware (we're in a hotel), my pasta had absolutely no flavor and was completely bland, and the bruschetta was disgusting! $50 straight into the trash! Would NOT recommend this place at all.
google avatar

Moon J.

Yelp
Authentic Italian food, Fred's has been a staple to the NorthEast Restaurant community for years. The pizza is amazing, all due to the sauce. My favorites on the menu are the subs, pasta, and pizza. They have renovated a few years ago and atmosphere is good. Depending on the day, parking can be packed. That being said, the food is excellent and nothing beats a Fred's pizza.
google avatar

Susan G.

Yelp
Super bummed about our take out pizza tonight. I specifically asked for really thin crust and we got undercooked doughy hand tossed. The pizza wasn't the same tonight. Nor was the customer service on the order, then the call back because I realized the fella under quoted me, then the pick up, and finally the call to tell them about the undercooked pizza. Bad all around experience. We always want to do business with non-chain restaurants. I think we are going to move on from the pizza here but we will be back for another try on their Italian dishes

Alison K.

Yelp
Pizza is excellent. We had a supreme. Sauce, crust and toppings were above average. Enjoyed beer in a frosty mug. The atmosphere is relaxed. Good amount of TVs too. Can see from pretty much ever angle.

Yelp
I've never eaten in at Fred's, but have ordered pizza many times. We usually go with the "pre-bake". They make it and you bake it at home. Fred's is a zillion times better than that "other" pre-bake place. The crust is good, sauce is good, and toppings are plentiful. I asked what kind of oil they use in making their food and found out they use olive oil. That makes a nice change from the ubiquitous "vegetable" oil answer I usually get at restaurants. They can even make your pre-bake crust extra thin if you request it. My dh has eaten in there, and always orders the BLT sub, which he raves about.

Yelp
Usually get the food for take out, but they have really good pizza, subs and manicotti
