Fred's Tavern & Liquor Store

On a whim, we decided to try Fred's Tavern for dinner. I got the French Onion Cheesesteak, and my roommate got the Mushroom Swiss burger. I was shocked at how delicious my cheesesteak was! The meat was cooked wonderfully and juicy without being too much. The onions were only sautéed, not caramelized, but it honestly worked fine. It was a bit low on the gruyere cheese, but the amount of meat in the cheesesteak made up for it. The roll they used was great quality! The fries were cooked PERFECTLY, they were so crispy. My roommate said their burger was delicious and the best burger they've had in a long while. The waitress was very sweet and took our orders promptly. The only minor downside is that the side of the restaurant we sat in felt a bit like a dining hall and not a restaurant. I'm sure the other side by the full bar was a bit more fancy, I think there's a fireplace on that side? Not sure, but it was fine for a quick and tasty dinner!

What a great place to stop for dinner after walking the beach. Whether you want to sit outside with fresh air or inside, where you can catch a game or perhaps in the bar area. The service, food, and atmosphere were perfect!! I will definitely go back while I'm in NJ visiting. The wings were some of the best I've ever had! 😋

This is a great, somewhat “old school” spot. They do a good job with both the liquor store and tavern. We have been frequenting both for decades. Experience - the atmosphere is classic, with a great bar. Service - the service at the bar is always very good. Food - The food is very good. Fantastic burgers. Overall, the value is good. The liquor store can be somewhat expensive.

First time dining here in the 10 years that iv been coming to this town. It did not disappoint! They sat my husband and I right away outside on the patio. So cute with a nice view of the bay. Our server was Emily and she was great. Friendly and attentive.Food was slamming. I’m a chicken finger lover so decided to get them as the appetizer. Portion was extremely generous and delicious . Fries were a bonus. Beer battered heaven . Food also came out so fast as did the other tables around us with nothing but good things being said about the food. Will definitely be a new staple on our vacation.

Great lunch at Freds on a Sunday in mid-July. Nice outdoor sitting area thats covered and with a ceiling fan. Inside is nice and air-conditioned. Waitress super nice and very attentive. Nothing negative to say. I recommend. This place was recommended to me by a local by the way!

First time here in the 10+ years coming to Stone Harbor. Sorry we waited so long. Excellent dinner, fast amazing service and great beer! Emily our waitress was awesome and had a great personality. We’ll definitely be back!

I dined at Fred’s Tavern twice now and I had a wonderful experience both times. My children and nephew raved about the food and said they would give the restaurant 10 stars. Our waiter, Rob, was great! He was friendly and provided excellent service. Our food was delicious and was served quickly. I highly recommend Fred’s Tavern!

I've been visiting Stone Harbor for 50 years and since I was old enough to remember there has always been a Fred's Tavern. Over the years it's expanded from just a liquor store to a great Tavern bar and now they have a pretty nice inside restaurant area and also an outside patio dining area. Good to be comfortable inside with the AC when needed, otherwise I personally prefer the outside patio. Fred's has always had fair prices on everything they sell which can be hard to find in a summer Resort Beach town. Was very pleasantly surprised to learn they have a very good menu with an amazing kitchen! Great steak and cheese subs if that's your thing but they also have great salads and other fare. Had one of the best chicken fajitas in my life here. Best onion rings by far! No question. And to top things off menu items are not outrageously expensive either. Very reasonable prices!

Honestly great time. My grandma LOVES Fred's but I was a little unsure about the food... BUT. The food hit the spot! I had the fish tacos and honestly, it was really good! Perfect for me. It's very crowded in there but it's quick and lovely service, also can't beat the location! Great downtown bite.

First time I was at Fred's I played a brand-new video game called Space Invaders! (zoix!) Been here many times since - made more use of the liquor store in recent years - however today I found myself here on a rainy Wednesday afternoon while waiting for my Girlfriend who had a spa appointment down the street..so for nostalgia's sake I decided to come in and wait out the rain @ Fred's. Dining area is up-do-date & not overly bar-esque these days - I was seated immediately & my server was quick to take my drink & food order. Didn't go fancy - just some mozzarella sticks for food, but enjoyed the service and chance to sit back and relax. Fred's has been a Stone Harbor institution for years - glad to see them continue to serve up the food and beverages! I'll be back!

This was one of those better than I expected places. Went for lunch on a Saturday and I was surprised the place was so crowded.One of the people I was with had been there before but not in years. He was initially so so about it. I was surprised given how crowded it was that the service was pretty good. The food was also good. I had a turkey club and fries which is something I enjoy now and again. Basically this is good bar food. They have a respectable beer selection. The atmosphere is on the plain side but to be honest, that's usually is a so what for me unless the atmosphere is absolutely awful or really great.

Best cheesesteaks on 7 mile Island! Not a huge fan of their french fries with the breading so generally opt for Chips. Try their special In-N-Out Burger tonight and it was really good. If you're looking for burgers, this is your spot.

A staple of Stone Harbor. Great people, great drinks, and great food. If you're looking for a good time to hang out with your friends or watch a game, you have to try this out!

My 70 year old mom asked for water and receive a reprimand. Asked for my bill and had a pen thrown at me. This bartender needs to think about finding a different job. One day he will cross the wrong person. The bartender with the fancy cocktail belt was friendly and efficient.

For anyone who fondly remembers the heyday of Big Mac's back in the 70's and 80's: the Fred's Burger. Great local place that warmly welcomes all non-locals.

Service was amazing, Rob was super friendly and efficient and made sure we had everything we needed. We split a blue cheeseburger and an order of buffalo wings. Rob had the kitchen split the burger and fries on separate plates without us even asking.... Nice touch. Burger was perfectly cooked and sweet potato fries were amazing, with just the right level of crunch. Buffalo wings had a tasty sauce, great spice level, and ample celery and blue cheese on the side. Washed it all down with a hazy IPA . Outside looks historic, inside is fine but kind of plain / dull. Was hoping for old school charm when I saw that awesome neon sign outside. Liv music on weekends. Great spot for a burger and beer.

We love Fred's! The food is consistently good - never had something that we didn't like. Some favorites are the French onion cheesesteak, French onion soup, burgers (all are really good), salads are fresh. My guy loves the BBQ burger - onion rings, bacon, cheese and bbq sauce. They always have great specials too! Bartenders and servers are great. And we rarely leave without making new friends. Just an all around great spot at the shore.

Went to Fred's for dinner when we got into town on Easter weekend. Place was packed with locals as there was not a full contingent of restaurants open as it was off season. Service was great. Food was solid bar food, burgers, French onion soup, and so on. Fred's is certainly consistent even in the off season!

Fred's is the first place we go when we arrive in Stone Harbor. Food is always great. We especially like the wing specials. Staff is very friendly.

Walking around Stone Harbor and asked a local where to eat. They said Fred's Tavern had consistently good food, bar food for the area. It's a definite hang out for many locals. Menu was decent as even I the gluten free challenge found something. My group wanted hot sandwiches and a beer. Consensus was good burgers and wings, salads good, cheesesteak not a fav, chicken sandwich and nachos good. Service was great. Bar atmosphere and we had fun. Would definitely return. We went here off season.

Came in for a beer and a bite after the beach. Only domestics and IPAs on draft. I decided to go w a bottle beer. We did not order any food as it smelled like piss. PISS! Urine.

Went to Fred's for lunch... three generations. Service was professional, efficient and server was excellent with my granddaughters!!! Food exceptional. Thank you!!

Our family went to Fred's last night to play Quizzo and have beverages and appetizers. The hostess stated it would be a 45 minute to hour wait, which was acceptable. 45 mins later we got a text asking if everyone was ordering an entree and they refused to seat us unless we ordered an entree, though it was already after 9pm. The hostess did not state this prior to taking our reservation and I stated we came for Quizzo. This was a very disappointing and frustrating experience, and we do not think we'll be back to Fred's again.

I had the fish tacos and I would not recommend. The fish was flat and very dry. It's definitely a sign of the times--post-pandemic, many restaurants, including this one, are cutting corners. It's clear they're using lower-quality ingredients. Diners, beware when heading to Avalon and Stone Harbor these days.

Great salads. Fast service. Seating on the porch is great. Pleasant waitress. Like the free parking.

Definitely an iconic establishment in Stone Harbor Nj with quick service and great food! The bar is centrally located in the city center allowing it to be easily walked or biked too!

This was the first time I had a blue cheese burger that actually tasted like quality blue cheese and a lot of it. The burger was a little too pink though so maybe I'll ask for well done next time

Horrible experience tonight! At 7:30 pm a bunch of men came charging in and began taking out the tables and chairs around me where I was trying to finish my dinner. Both front and back doors were opened and the temperature dropped to very cold. Do you know how embarrassing it is to have an entire restaurant removed around you and you're still eating/drinking?? I cried all the way home, my PTSD on overload from my years of being bullied/ made fun of/ treated like I was sh.t. Thank you Freds for doing it again. All you had to do was tell me what was going on and I would have left earlier. But to have that happen around me was horrific and this is no exaggeration!

7/10/21 Another great experience at Fred's Tavern. Our server Star was AWESOME! She was always friendly and attentive to us. So many places are short staffed and are even limiting their hours because of this. We started off with the chicken nachos that are always a hit! Olives, jalapeño peppers, melted cheese, thin crispy tortilla chips with a huge heaping portion of sour cream and guacamole! WOW!! I would seriously order this as an entree! 2 at our table ordered the special "Philly pepperoni" cheesesteak it was heaped with steak meat, pepperoni and cheese. My daughter ordered a flatbread with short rib, goat cheese, onion and fig jam-she loved it! My daughter in law ordered the blue cheese burger and I got the California burger with avocado, crispy bacon and cheese-lettuce tomato and onion. Fan freaking tactic!! Upgrade to dries or onion rings- it's Soooooooo worth it! I shared my fries and still couldn't eat them all. Thank you for a great experience!

We visited Fred's late afternoon in mid-March. It was a Saturday but given the time of day (3:45) and time of year-- we had to wait about 20 mins for a table. Business was booming! The service and food were both great. While there isn't anything super memorable about the decor or experience, we were both hungry and the food was well prepared. Everything arrived very hot and fresh from the kitchen. The quesadilla was stuffed full of chicken. The wings and onion rings were nice and crispy. We didn't have a single complaint. Even though they were busy our waitress checked on us numerous times and we felt super well cared for. Great spot for some pub fare!

Service was good but food was just okay. We both got burgers but it would be nice if they came with fries. They gave a very small handful of chips. Fries or onion rings were $4 extra. Was here on vacation & prob wouldn't return with so many other good restaurants around

Cool bar/restaurant on the shore. Went here for dinner, and it was very good. I had the wings which I was extremely impressed with. A lot of times you order wings and they come out soggy or the sauces and that good but these were very crispy and the sauce was very good. We came in the evening for dinner. It was very packed and we waited a little bit for a table. But they had live music and it was super fun to hang out at. It was a little dark inside compared to a lot of the other restaurants on the street, but if that doesn't bother you then I would go check it out.

Why can't we give a zero review? Manager was completely rude. Told us we could not sit at a certain spot until ten o'clock because of dinner hour of which I respected. Then I noticed he allowed another group to drink at the same table I was trying to sit at 9:30. When I asked him I thought you said 10 o'clock he totally dismissed me and walked away. Poppin | bar | portions | affordable Poppin: Fred's is definitely one of the popular spots in Stone Harbor. We arrived at 8pm for dinner. There was an wait advertised as 25-30 minutes which ended up being 15-18. We went to the bar and people were getting "spirited". The group with the energy told us it becomes a mini dance club after 9:30-10 and stays open until 2am. Bar: the restaurant/bar is sectioned off into three areas. When you walk in the bar is to your left and fits about 50-75 people between sitting and standing. To the right is seating for the restaurant. They have standard tables to fit 2-8 people. Then there is an covered/heated outdoor section with 4 big tables for parties of 6-8. Portions: Be ready to eat. They have very large portions. I had the grilled chicken sandwich. Which came with 3 pretty large patties with sweet potato fries. I was definitely stuffed after my meal. Affordable: given its popularity and portions it was very affordable. There are many other places on the island with smaller portions and higher price points. Pro tip: call ahead to get a feel for the wait or go early and walk around 96th street.

Food is great but I wish someone would actually answer the phone. I tried multiple times on Saturday then ended up walking over only for the hostess to tell me they weren't taking take out orders. Why couldn't she answer the phone to say that? Same thing today -- a Tuesday at 5:00pm. No answer. Such a shame because the food is good but I'm forced to take my business elsewhere.

Having been to Stone Harbor for a number of years I am familiar with Fred's but have never eaten here. The general reviews I read seem to recommend the burger so I decided to go with that. I had the Southwest burger with a salad for my side. The side salad was fairly generic. It wasn't awful but was not something I would probably request again in lieu of fries. Overall my burger was good. Wait staff was friendly. The service coming in for lunch was relatively quick. I wouldn't say anything was bad, but it also wasn't all that memorable either. Pricing was good and wasn't a bad value at all.

Stopped in here during the off season and grabbed a burger for lunch. Food and service was great. Definitely gives off Irish pub vibes.

Rob is a total sweetheart but Rachel told me I'm getting fat. Not nice Rachel, but I do love you. Kevin rocks! Liar liar, Rachel is the all time best!! Always delivers with a smile!!

Fred's Tavern Stone Harbor NJ. Fred, Fred, Fred, Fred, Fred. Something was going on with the roll. Every other bite when I got a lot of the cheese and fried onions mixed with the meat was amazing. $2.50 to add french fries, you know I don't like that. I did like the french fries better than the place down the street but the place down the street they came with your sandwich. Not a horrible sandwich but it came in second in our 2 cheesesteak Stone Harbor SmackDown.

The Honey Hot wings. Excellent flavor. All the food is good, but wings and the French Onion cheesesteak are my picks.

We have been here several times and the food is always very good. The service is also excellent. The French onion soup was quite good. The Filet cheese melt was very filling and very good. We highly recommend Fred's Tavern if you are in the area !!!

Great food at some of the best prices on the island!! The best part is, their portions are very generous too. We've gotten Fred's the past two nights in a row and everything was delicious. I got items from the specials menu both days: one day I got the bang bang shrimp quesadilla and the other night was a grilled chicken sandwich with roasted peppers, spinach, goat cheese, and pesto on ciabatta. So good!!! Would highly recommend Fred's for an affordable but delicious meal!

Came here twice. The first time was decent but I'm never going back after what happened during my second visit. I tried placing a pickup order and my friend and i tried calling the place 6 times in total from both of our phones but no one picked up. We decided to just place the order when we arrived. When we got there the hostess told us to place our takeout order at the bar. So we did and we placed an order for just a side of fries. Nothing else. I paid with my card and left a cash tip. The fries were about $5 and i left a $2 tip. We got our takeout order and everything seemed fine. But then a few days later after i checked my bank statement i was shocked to see that i was charged $21!!! It may have been a slip up but they should have realized that they made a mistake and attempted to fix it instead of charging me $16 more than i should have paid in the first place.

Fred's is a Stone Harbor institution! You can always count on this laid-back, local hangout to provide you with awesome live music, solid bar fare, and great service. It's a go-to for myself and friends when we're seeking a casual, no nonsense bite, with some cold beers and great tunes to wash em down. Plus, having the liquor store right next door is so convenient when you take the party back home.

Server called me fat and my food had 3 long curly hairs in it. I almost pooped my pants on the drive home. Horrible service and unfriendly bartender. I should've just gone to 7/11, their food is way better.

So we have been to Fred's numerous times for take out beer. Today was the day we stopped for lunch after a long day on the beach. We arrived around 3:00. Parking was a bit difficult, meter parking on the island can be tough. We were sat inside immediately. As for the food it was good. My burger was cooked to perfection and the condiments were fresh. The bun was a bit over toasted. The fries weren't as crispy as we would have liked. My wife's wedge was fresh and delicious. Our daughter had fried mozzarella and French onion soup. She seemed to enjoy both. There were only 2 other tables in the restaurant. Our waitress made our lunch not so great. She was miserable! We couldn't tell you her name, she never told us. She didn't smile, didn't offer refills, nothing! It was some of the worst service we've had in quite some time. From the service alone, we will not be back. 2 stars for the food and 0 for service.
