We attended a free walking tour with our guide Miriam, a few days ago. We were only three people, so it felt almost like a private tour. Everything was very casual, however it was very informative and Miriam was very knowledgeable about Quito, it's history, Ecuadorian culture, the current situation etc etc. We were able to ask many questions, and she provided us was lots of insider knowledge. Furthermore, the visit of the central market, including a food tasting, as well as the chocolate tasting, which took place in a hotel, were great and informative experiences. Obviously the tour isn't really for free, as a donation is expected, which is fair enough, and this money is definitely spent for a good purpose.
Ecuador and especially it's tourism and hospitality are currently having a hard time. The country has probably seen better times, but things are not as bad as they appear on the media. It's still a very beautiful country, with lovely people, and with some common sense, it's still safe and definitely worth to enjoy it.
