Want delicious unpasturized grass-fed Jersey cow milk, yogurt, and kefir from a small family owned farm? Look no further!
After becoming disappointed with the products and service from Udder Milk (a farm to consumer raw dairy and meat products co-op that anonymously sources from the tri-state area), I found this lovely small family owned farm about an 80 minute drive from me.
They have about 30 Jersey cows in total (plus a few baby goats!) and their barn, pasture, and milking apparatus are super clean, in great repair, and lovingly looked after - and of course their facility is FDA-approved to sell raw dairy directly to customers (they hold one of the few licences to do so that NY state has issued).
In addition to their Jersey milk (so much more delicious and healthful than milk from Holstein cows which is A1), they also make their own kefir and yogurt. They also sell butter (soooo much more delicious than what I got from Udder Milk); farm eggs, and some cheeses.
The owners are super friendly, and are right there with their other equally friendly employees doing the milking and tending, and their passion about their mission and their milk is just so inspiring (my husband, in a grumpy mood and not feeling my increasing enthusiasm for driving all the heck around the tri-state area for fresh farm products every week left in a cheerful mood and was moved to try to leave a big tip)
Yes, it is a hassle to have to make a weekly trip, but I think it is worth it (plus, it is right near the huge Woodbury Commons shopping outlet!) and I'm looking into setting something up where a group of friends takes turns doing the weekly run.
The milk is so delicious and keeps for a full 7 days (I've tried a number of other farms - and stuff from Udder Milk, wherever they source from) and it goes off on the 5th day. The yogurt and kefir are also fresh and delicious and the eggs are scrumptious.
Make sure you bring your own cooler with ice. If you forget, there is a local store a minute drive away where you can buy ice and pack your purchases into plastic bags, in a pinch. That's what we did the first time.
And opt for the glass jugs, as milk will keep a bit longer.
