9 Must-Visit Religious UNESCO Sites in Germany - AFAR

"A striking red-sandstone Gothic cathedral anchoring a charming pedestrian center; as the seat of an archbishop with an associated seminary, it contributes to the town's ecclesiastical atmosphere and local legends tied to the small brooks that run through the streets." - AFAR

18 Places That Celebrate Glorious Beer

"In the late 13th and early 14th centuries, trade guilds of the town of Freiburg im Breisgau funded a series of glorious stained-glass windows to line the nave of the Freiburg Münster, a cathedral founded around the year 1200. As a result, the products and tools of each guild feature prominently. In the northwest corner, next to the rose window, is the legacy of the Brewers’ Guild. Jesus Christ looks down from the upper compartment of the window, with a chalice bearing three of the nails from his cross etched alongside. In the lower edges of the window, the guild’s symbols appear in the form of beer pitchers and a cup measure. To the right is the offering of the Bakers’ Guild. The bottom of the window bears the guild’s coat of arms, featuring the pretzel, or as the Germans would call them, bretzels. At the top are representations of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, as well as the Virgin Mary. The window also depicts a story from the legend of St. Catherine of Alexandria, a princess who converted to Christianity and was later martyred. One version of the saint’s story goes that Catherine, upon being ordered to renounce her faith by the Emperor’s delegate, offered instead such a spirited defense of it that she converted the monarchs’ own philosophers (whom he then proceeded to burn alive). The panels of the bakers’ guild windows also show Catherine’s conversion of the Roman emperor’s wife. The emperor ordered Catherine to be tortured on a spiked wheel, shattering it. Finally, the emperor ordered her to be beheaded.  Although some of the original windows suffered damage in the ensuing years, a restoration in the nineteenth century brought them back to their full splendor." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Visiting Freiburg Cathedral (Freiburger Münster) was a deeply memorable experience for me. From the moment I arrived at the Münsterplatz, I was impressed by the incredible Gothic architecture and the level of detail on the exterior of the cathedral. The tall, elegant tower is breathtaking and can be admired from many parts of the city. Every sculpture, carving, and stone detail reflects the long history and craftsmanship behind this remarkable building. Inside the cathedral, the atmosphere is calm, peaceful, and full of spiritual depth. The beautiful stained-glass windows fill the space with soft, colorful light, creating a very serene and reflective environment. I especially appreciated the quietness inside, which allows visitors to pause, pray, or simply enjoy the sense of peace and history. You can really feel the centuries of faith and tradition that are part of this place. What makes the experience even more special is the location. The cathedral stands in the center of Freiburg, surrounded by the Münsterplatz with its markets, small shops, and cafés. The contrast between the lively square outside and the peaceful interior of the cathedral is wonderful. It feels like a perfect balance between city life and spiritual calm. Overall, Freiburg Cathedral is not just a tourist attraction but a place that touches you emotionally and spiritually. Whether you are interested in history, architecture, religion, or simply want a quiet moment in a busy city, this place is absolutely worth visiting. I would highly recommend it to anyone coming to Freiburg.

Fantastic gothic cathedral called Münster, the emblem of the city, is a real gem of architecture whose construction lasted several centuries. Built in three stages, the first began in 1120 during the reign of Duke Conrad of Zähringen, the second in 1210, and the third in 1230, construction continued in the new Gothic style with the nave and the dominant west tower. The tower was completed by 1330 and boasts the oldest known Gothic spire with interlacing tracery. The town council then decided to replace the late Romanesque chancel with a much larger one, including an ambulatory and a ring of chapels, and commissioned Johann von Gmünd to undertake the project. An inscription on the north portal commemorates the laying of the foundation stone on March 24, 1354. The vault of the new chancel was not completed until 1510. This cathedral undoubtedly amaze you with its blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. You can admire its 116-meter tower, the only Gothic one which miraculously survived the bombings of World War II. Or discover its Renaissance-style forecourt, added in 1513, which gives the cathedral a unique charm. The interior holds surprises with masterpieces such as the Reliquary of Saint Lambertus (635-705), Bishop of Maastricht and patron saint of Freiburg. Completed in 1514, the pulpit, the 13th- and 14th-century stained-glass windows, and the four organs. You can also listen to the sound of the bells, including the famous 750-year-old Hosanna !

Stunning Romanesque and Gothic Cathedral located in the center of Freiburg, Germany. In German, it is Freiburg Minster. The history of this magnificent structure dates back to the 1200s and was started in the Romanesque style and finished in a gothic style. The tower is spectacular. Inside the Cathedral is simply breathtaking. The stained glass and statues are beautiful. The altars are beautiful. The Cathedral is free to enter, but to tour the chapels and go on the altar is a €2 donation per person. My opinion: totally worth doing this because of the beauty of each Chapel. We loved our visit to Freiburg Cathedral. This is a do not miss when visiting the city.

I know cathedrals usually close around 6p.m., but I visited Freiburg Cathedral around 7p.m. and was able to enter. It was nighttime, so I couldn't see the stained glass but it was nice to be able to relax both physically and mentally in the cathedral on a cold day. I could hear the pipe organ playing, and since it was an 8 p.m, many people were arriving. There was even a flute player, and the atmosphere was quiet and solemn.

My family and I had an amazing time visiting Freiburg Cathedral, one of Germany's most spectacular Gothic churches. Standing in the heart of Münsterplatz for over 800 years, this magnificent structure truly lives up to its reputation as having "the most beautiful spire on earth. Interesting history: The cathedral's survival is remarkable. During World War II bombing raids in November 1944, the surrounding old town was destroyed, yet the cathedral emerged virtually unscathed. & God bless you and your family 😊

This cathedral has architecture I have never seen before. When we got there, there was a concert going on. I don't know how to describe what I heard on the pipe organ but it was... beautiful.

The market was absolutely perfect! The atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming, filled with lively stalls and an amazing variety of products. It was a pleasure just to walk around, surrounded by wonderful scents and the energy of a bustling market. What really stood out to me was the friendliness of the vendors – every interaction was warm and pleasant, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. It’s the kind of place where you can spend hours exploring, tasting, and soaking up the local culture. Truly a must-visit!

Impressive Gothic cathedral in a nice square in the center of Freiburg. It is surrounded by little kiosks selling snacks and restaurants and shops. Closeby are a number of nice bars aldo
