On the Grid : Freighthouse Fitness

"Like Blip Coffee, these guys were also affected by the fire. However they hustled into a new space quickly and are business as usual. There are a few gyms in the West Bottoms, but Freighthouse seems to have that magnetic sense of community paired with just the right amount of ass-kicking (30min classes) that makes you actually look forward to going to a gym. There’s old-school hip hop blasting while you do a variety of strength-training exercises, all geared more toward aesthetics than performance. All in a raw space that makes you feel like [Rocky](http://giphy.com/gifs/rockymovie-movie-rocky-sylvester-stallone-d2ZfqZY5eSCR0rza). *Editor’s Note: I took a class there 4 days ago and can still barely walk.*" - Faregrounds

This gym has the most amazing atmosphere! Tried their 21 days for $21 deal and have now been here more than 2.5 years. I have been a part of several gyms in my fitness adventures, and I have never felt more supported in my health goals than I do at Freight House Fitness. The strength training classes are all super challenging in the best kind of way. Plus, you're in and out in 30 minutes! They also have yoga classes throughout the week that are always great. And I've been doing personal training with Brandon there now for over a year. He really knows his stuff and pushes me to become the best athlete I can be. I love this place, the coaches, and all of the people who come here! The community is truly unmatched.

I’ve been attending FH for almost 8 years and absolutely love everything about the gym. It’s not only a place to set and hit goals, but it’s also a community. Some of my best friends have come from meeting them in class and pushing each other. The coaches are also some of the very best in KC. They truly care about you as a person, not just a member. And you can feel that with every single class. 12/10 Recommend!

Love Freight House! The trainers are just intense enough and know how to give a solid workout. The original location in the west bottoms does not have air conditioning, which sounds miserable but it's a great way to really feel like you've done a great job. Check it out for sure!

I absolutely LOVE FH. For the first time in my life, working out is fun and empowering! And with 30 minute classes, it’s hard to find excuses not to go. I know I’m doing the best thing for my health and it doesn’t take long to start seeing improvement too, which is a bonus. After one class with Brandon, you will be hooked :)

I have been a member of Freighthouse Fitness for 8 years now. People ask how are you so disciplined and keep up a routine? Well the simple response to that is that the way FHF structures their classes, it is easy to stick to a routine and keep fitness as part of your health journey. What I love about the classes is that each is different and focus on a different body and muscle group. It’s perfect for those who don’t have more than an hour to dedicate to working out because there are over 10 classes a day to fit to your schedule and the best part is they are only 30 minutes long. Also, this gym is a community and very welcoming. If you are a seasoned fitness person or a first time beginner, the trainers are there to help and the classes are not intimidating. I strongly encourage people to give this gym a try because I know you’ll like it!

Google
Best gym and best community in KC! No better place to get fit and make new friends. All coaches are certified trainers so you know you’re taken care of at every class. Owners Bre and Brandon are inclusive and friendly, always coming up with unique programming, challenges and special events along the way. Get your butt in this gym for a non-toxic, uplifting gym experience!!

Freight, jumping in after seeing a response to my sister's review, in regard to a situation that happened over a year ago that you have just now decided to respond to (which is fitting)-Noelle tried to reach out multiple times when she kept getting charged and she was not receiving a response from you, when she finally did you denied her being charged until we sent unsolicited screen shots (to get it refunded) as a last resort. At the end of the day we shouldn't have to defend this because it was an error in YOUR system. This error was made worse by your lack of response (this took months not hours-- stop with the dishonesty) and was the reason she asked me to jump in in the first place. Your responses were unprofessional and you continuously deflected accountability (just like in your most recent post) this is why I parted ways with your gym after having been a member for about 3 years. I remember this like it was yesterday, because it was the worst customer service experience for me to date. Do better--and do not come at this with some phony "apology" where you try to twist what happened. (Freight I will lay it out as clearly as I can 1. It took way too long and was way too much struggle to get my sisters money back. 2. You all created her accounts (both), even still, had you listened to her initially and dug in deeper when she continued to write in about being charged this could have ended better. You should have controls in place to make sure people aren't getting billed when they aren't members of your gym.

I spent years working out in a home gym and a lot of money on video programs and equipment but eventually became bored and unmotivated. Then spent years doing CrossFit, which was a great environment for motivation, but eventually had to quit due to injuries. That was when I found Freight House and actually started learning how to lift correctly (example: the first place where I finally learned to do a deadlift correctly and not have lower back pain afterwards). Brandon leads the team of coaches and does a phenomenal job. There are so many class options that no matter what my schedule is that day, I can find the 30 minutes to get a great workout in. The best part is I get to show up, not have to think about or plan my workout, and leave with maximum results. No matter what level of fitness you are, you will be welcomed, challenged, and motivated to come back for more.

Yelp
Got an amazing opportunity to visit Freight House Fitness this morning for a leg day workout. Immediately upon walking in I was greeted with a smile from Coach Brandon. The atmosphere was great with lots of cute neon signs, wife opened garage doors, fans, and loud music. The workout was quick and effective! Coach Brandon demonstrated each movement and frequently walked around to help with tips and encouragement. If you're looking for a fun workout class dont hesitate to sign up at Freight House Fitness! (They also have yoga that I bet is a blast!)

Yelp
Tabata Tuesday! This workout kicked butt, in a good way! If you are looking for a challenging and engaging workout that only takes 30 minutes of your time in a trendy industrial setting, then this is your class. The gym overall has a very cool vibe. There's no other way to put it. It's tucked away in the westbottoms and almost hidden to anyone passing by. The entry area is well decorated, and the amenity of a shower to rinse off after your workout is a plus. As far as instructors go, DC was incredible. He was more like a coach guiding me through each exercise I didn't understand and offering loads of encouragement to the entire class throughout. The workout sequence used a wide variety of equipment and was fast paced so, you truly were never bored. I really enjoyed this style of bootcamp class and will definitely be back. I was so happy I found this on my class pass because it was a vast switch up from my usual workouts.

Yelp
Popped in for a class this morning! Loved the gym atmosphere. Brandon was a great motivator and super lively at 8AM! Fun neon signs and fitness for where ever you are in your journey.

Yelp
I've been a member for about 8 years and am still going to the gym consistently which says a lot. Love this gym, the coaches and the people.

Super great coach and workouts! Such a fun spot! Workouts are consistent and given options for every level

Yelp
Dropped in at freight house through classpass. The classes are 30 minutes long. It consisted of heavy weights from barbell, dumbbells, and kettlebells. The movements were easy to learn. I felt after the instructor taught us the movements and layout she kind of just stood back and watched. There wasn't much engagement or motivation going on in the class. The class and energy just felt deflated and bland. I really did enjoy the space and facility. I would like to give them another try just with a different instructor.

Yelp
Still love Coach B! The workouts are great. The open atmosphere is inviting. I prefer spring to fall workouts as I like to feel the outdoors and you can't exactly have the garage doors open in the freezing temps.

Yelp
After a fire at their old Bliss Maple Syrup building, Freight House Fitness had a turn around time of 24 hours of getting back to a sweat your booty off workout class regimen. I have been coming to FHF since August of 2014. Actually got serious about my health and fitness January of 2015 when I embarked on a physical, mental and emotional 90-Day-Challenge hosted by Sean & Kendra. Before the challenge, I had managed to lose 15 lbs on my own but it was a whole different world doing this with a group of people. Not only was this the most intense I had ever been about understanding what my body needed as fuel, it broke down walls of weight-loss plateaus and helped me gain a new confidence as a woman. With that challenge, I lost 15 lbs and 11% body fat. Having maintained what I lost throughout the first challenge, I decided to do another to put me that much closer to my "goal". With having been given the tools and guidelines as well as a support system at the gym and a group on Facebook, I managed to lose another 10 lbs and 9% body fat. As much as everyone has their own love for their specific gym, I have found that much and more in Freight House Fitness and my "fit family" that comes to the gym. You can be large, small, round, square, male, female, young or old and love it as much as myself and the others who have found a passion for their workout styles, character and levels of respect and integrity. The goal is to put you where YOU want to be. Not where someone else wants you to be. That's my favorite part about Freight House Fitness.

Yelp
From the moment I set foot in FHF, I knew it was home! The owners, Sean and Kendra Van Horn are two of the most accepting and kind people you'll ever meet. And the friends I've made there...priceless! I was nervous, insecure and sooo ready for change when I found FHF. They have helped me reach my goals and continue to inspire me to do the same for my future goals. I'm stronger than I've ever been, down 35lbs and the most comfortable I've ever been in my skin! Thanks FHF! If you're on the verge of change...take the plunge!! You will NOT regret this!

Yelp
I'm not one for big spending on gyms and trainers but this place is the exception for me. The ambiance is very motivating once you get past the intimidation stage of being new. They have HIIT workouts readily available every hour with trainers there to show you how to do the exercises and to motivate you along the way. The trainers are all extremely nice and welcoming. I started with the groupon offer for the first month and enjoyed the workouts as well as seeing my results so much that I finally caved and bought the membership ($140 for 28 days). It's very pricey for me, but it's worth it for the intensive workouts they provide for you throughout the day and you can attend as many as you'd like. First Fridays are BYOB Yoga for $5 or free for members, as well as yoga classes throughout the month. On days that I can't find a sitter, I take my daughter with me and she sits within view as I workout. Once I reach my goals I will be looking for a gym within my budget unfortunately, but right now I'm loving this place!

Yelp
I've been a member of Freight House Fitness for about 3 months. I've moved around the Midwest and I have to say this is the best gym I've been to. It will run you around $105 a month on a standard membership. Yes, that's way pricier than Planet Fitness but you get what you pay for in a good way at FHF. Each class is around 30 minutes in length. Most of the workouts revolve around a mix of weight lifting (heavy weight and heavy reps) and cardio in a circuit training format. If you have a short attention span like I do, this is perfect in every way. No two workouts are ever the same.

Yelp
Awesome coaches and love the 30 minute workouts! I've been a member for almost a year and for the first time in my life I've consistently worked out AND I actually enjoy going to the gym! When I belonged to gyms, like Genesis, I would only do cardio (elliptical, treadmill, bike, etc.) because I didn't know what else to do and always felt intimidated by all the weights and machines. I'd say the first month at FHF was a bit intimidating because I didn't know any of the workouts but the coaches do a great job demonstrating the workouts at the beginning of class and are there to help you throughout the workout, too. You also can go at your own pace/weight which is good when you are a beginner, like I was and had zero muscles when I first started. The workouts change daily so it keeps from getting monotonous and you the classes range from full body to focusing on certain areas of your body. The gym has a fun and cool feel, unlike your typical gyms (IE Genesis Planet Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, etc.). I would absolutely recommend FHF! If you're workout/gym history sounds similar to mine, don't give up if you feel intimidated at first and give it at least a month or 2 to become more comfortable and confident with the workouts and you will love it too!

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! They play great music, have motivating instructors, and the owners Sean & Kendra are very welcoming and friendly. There is no judgment here. Everyone is there to get a great workout and have fun. The 30-minute bootcamps are designed to work for every fitness level and it's easy to fit those workouts into a busy schedule. I don't see myself ever joining another gym in Kansas City. This is the best!

Yelp
Joined a 30 min class while visiting KC this past weekend - it was an amazing setting and experience. A must visit if you get a chance to meet the coaches and learn about the owner's vision and commitment to the Kansas City community.

Yelp
I am not someone who usually writes reviews, but I am thrilled with this gym. They offer a number of services, the most popular being 30 minute boot camp classes using barbells, traditional equipment, and industrial equipment like sledgehammers and tractor tires or fire hoses. The instructors know their stuff. Owned and led by a married couple who are body building champs. The atmosphere is very welcoming, and the scenery is charming- a rustic, modern industrial decor, quite fitting for its west bottoms location. Every class is different and challenging. The charm of the place and reasonable price was enough to bring me to try this gym. The expertise of the instructors and effectiveness of the workouts keeps me going back.

Yelp
Sean & Kendra and their staff are so positive, flexible and helpful! I had not worked out my entire 50+ year-old body for a really long time and was really apprehensive at first. But, after a few upbeat and fun 30 minutes with a great group, I now can't wait for each workout and signed up for a monthly plan to keep it up...and I feel great and am getting in shape! After about a year, I joined the 90-day challenge really got in shape--and lost 15 pounds of fat that I had been trying to shed for decades! Now I have bought a new wardrobe, and will keep in shape thanks to regular visits to Freight House!!

Yelp
I recently started attending Freight House via a recommendation from a friend, and I couldn't be happier with my choice of gym! The workouts are quick, purposeful, and engaging! In 30 minutes, I work up a sweat and have fun! Not only do the trainers assist with learning proper technique throughout the workout, but they also strive to build personal relationships with their clients! If you are looking for a KC gym, look no further! Drop in for a class, and I promise you'll love the Freight House family.
