A peaceful and beautiful cemetery. We enjoyed the calm atmosphere and admiring the differences between this and cemeteries in the US, and appreciated how this felt more like a celebration of life and reunion of families after death. The area was very well maintained and not too crowded.

St. Peter’s Cemetery in Salzburg is a peaceful and picturesque spot nestled at the foot of the Festungsberg. The well-maintained grounds feature ornate wrought-iron crosses, colorful flowers, and shaded pathways, creating a serene atmosphere that’s perfect for a quiet stroll. The surrounding architecture adds to the charm, with the nearby church and rock-carved catacombs enhancing the unique setting. It’s a lovely place to pause and appreciate the tranquil side of Salzburg’s Old Town.

Friedhof St. Peter is a peaceful and historic cemetery in downtown square of Salzburg. The ornate baroque tombstones and the cliffside catacombs create a unique and striking atmosphere. Walking through, you can’t help but feel the weight of its history. Inside the nearby church, I lit a candle for a loved one who was very ill. It was a quiet and beautiful moment, made even more special because we used to watch “The Sound of Music” together. Being in a place so connected to the film added a layer of meaning to the experience. This spot is serene and reflective, perfect for appreciating Salzburg’s rich past or finding a moment of connection and peace. It’s a visit I’ll always hold close to my heart :)

Was included with the Salzburg card so I checked out (it’s a nominal fee otherwise). Walking up the stairs, it offers some great views of St. Peter’s! Definitely worth spending about 10-15 minutes to check it out.

Google
Definitely the most beautiful and interesting part of the entire abbey! Believe me that it's not just about the tombs, that actually only those are wonderful, but the place itself is fantastic, also because you can also see some interesting glimpses of the city's monuments! It is completely free of charge

Even though it's a cemetery, it's very well known and nice area to walk. Beautiful plants and flowers adorning the grave. There's many old grave but there's still new one too. Most of the graves are reserved as there's section for family graves as well. It's well laid out and there's a church in the centre of this cemetary.

This was one of the prettiest and most well-kept places I visited in Salzburg. The tombs are very adorned and the vegetation and flowers make for a beautiful and peaceful setting.

A nice little spot on the side of the mountain. A graveyard by the old church. Basically in the rock face in Salzburg, so beautiful. Made me feel like I was in the sound of music. So much history here. There was no wait.

Yelp
We arrived just after dusk and the golden hour cast impossible shadows on every wall, tombstone, flora, and façade of one of the most awe inspiring corners of the earth that was, in many cases, carved out of the mountainside by people so long ago it almost seemed impossible that their efforts would still capture the eyes and mind of a people they couldn't possibly comprehend, gaping at the marrying of the natural environment and the curated rock, capturing life itself in a glowing rectangle that would have made Hank Morgan's lightning box seem pointlessly simple. Take a moment and look at my photos, and, while you do, know that they do no justice to what the naked eye beheld.

Yelp
If you are into cemeteries, like I am, then this is your place. It is such a unique place - very compact space with lots of amazingly ornate wrought iron gravesites and tons of flowers. Also has neat arched buildings and catacombs that you can tour for a small fee. Was well worth a walk through.

Yelp
We were lost actually, and thought we had finally found the Salzburg cathedral but it was actually S. Peter's. It was so beautiful so we decided to take a look around before heading out to the Dom (the nice staff in the gift shop told us how to get there!). The cemetery literally took my breath away. It is so unusual, and just so beautiful, especially in mid-summer when the flowers were blooming. It is definitely a place you shouldn't miss while in Salzburg!

Yelp
We had purchased a Salzburg card, and the catacombs are included on this card. The catacombs are dug out in the rock. We made our way up the steps and had a great view looking over the gravesites at St. Peter's. Very interesting place.

Yelp
Almost walked by it not realizing it was there. So glad we decided to explore it. What a beautiful haven at the foot of the fortress. Absolutely wonderful.

Yelp
No way to describe this place other than "you must see it when in Salzburg". It is easy to miss and I hope you don't :-)

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful abbey is great to explore. Take your time marveling at it's beautiful architecture then take a stroll through the spooky cemetery. It's not that big so it won't take up too much time but it's worth a stop over.

Yelp
Cemetery is the resting place of Nannerl, sister of Mozart and Johann Michael Haydn, brother of Joseph. Their resting place is at Crypt LIV, by the entrance of the catacomb. Michael's head is also in an urn stored in St. Peter's Church (on the right side from the entrance door).

Yelp
It is hard to say this is a do-not-miss location but it is. The grounds are so well maintained and they are absolutely beautiful. The cemetery is very different than what we envision or see in the US. As we wandered through we felt wonder and serenity at the same time. Some will also recognize immediately where the escape scene was shot for The Sound of Music. It is nice to see how others remember their ancestors and keep their memory alive.

Yelp
A really really lovely Abbey. Absolutely breathtaking. The attention to detail on every aspect of the interior is really stunning. The graveyard is quite spectacular also and is well worth a visit.
