There are MANY better places to eat in Toronto. Sursur Lee, I expect much better from you.
My friend and I went for Winterlicious, after a glass of wine and a coffee my bill was $95 (with an 18% tip because you give 20% as the first tipping option). That's insane.
Food was okay, but not memorable. We both started with the Green Onion Pancake with Duck Confit. The duck was beautiful but lost and overwhelmed by the goat cheese, perhaps a creme fraiche would have been a better option, because the duck should have been the star. For my main, I had the Caponata sicilliano creamy polenta, the polenta was luke warm while everything else on the plate was hot - made for a weird combination, I didn't taste the lemon in the dish, the crispy chickpeas added no value to it either, the pine nuts in it were fine for the crunch. My friend had the Grilled Seafood Duo and am not sure on her full take on it, so I won't comment. Lastly, dessert was a trio of Shortbread Pumpkin Tart, Coriander Mousse and Caramelized Banana and Jack fruit Wonton. The shortbread was abysmal, Scottish grandmothers are rolling over in their graves and the pumpkin was just flavourless. The Coriander Mousse was surprisingly good, but nothing that I would go home and try to recreate myself or probably order again. The Jack fruit wonton was good, it was like an apple turnover in terms of crispy texture and a great pop of tart fruit.
Service was okay, nothing exceptional and nothing that would differ from hitting up your local neighborhood restaurant. The decor inside is different, but didn't quite get all the metal crosses everywhere (is the restaurant haunted?). The music suddenly got very loud in the restaurant and I never understand this - you're a restaurant not a night club, I would like to talk with my company without having to yell at them.
Overall, I would go somewhere else to eat and spend your cash, Fring's isn't worth it. If you're really needing to hit up a Sursur Lee restaurant, head to Luckee, the food is better.
