This museum is awesome!!! So well organized and beautifully displayed …. Lots of amazing pottery, baskets, history, artifacts, a variety of weapons and their uses, code talkers, whaling items, instruments , a beautiful nature trail as well etc.. the list goes on…. There’s even a cool short video about the founder of this museum, which is absolutely amazing! And the woman that runs the museum is very very knowledgeable and very pleasant to speak with! My only regret is not having done this museum sooner. $8 / adult and worth every bit of it. We will definitely be back.!

Google
Great little museum! While the actual size of the museum is on the small side the amount of artifacts makes up for it. It’s well worth the stop and the small cost of admission to see the vast array of artifacts.

Love this little hidden gem. Great to see see on a rainy day on the Outer Banks! Would have loved to walk their nature trail if it wasn't raining.

While on vacation we were limited in the things we could visit of course. We chose this place bc we found a presentation being done for the same day we would be able to go. We could learn about who was chief and the natives all in one visit. The reason I gave 4 stars is bc there was NO presentation. We asked about it and were taken to another building only to play a couple games. Now, we appreciated the fun and the learning we did, but I am really disappointed in not having gotten what we expected, especially since our time is limited. Thank you for chatting with my girls and letting us browse the place.

Visited this museum last summer. It has a very nice collection of Native American artifacts, very informative and interesting galleries and displays. Friendly and Knowledgeable staff, very reasonable rates, plenty of souvenir items for sale. A must see museum when visiting Hatteras island.

Very educational place to take your family. It's not too big to where young children would get bored and you can keep there attention quite well. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The weather was nice so we enjoyed the trail as well.

My wife and daughter loved it here. I did too, of course. We had some laughs at the some of the snarky explanations (ie- appropriation of the swastika by “the little Austrian corporal”, I believe it was). There were lots of cool artifacts. I wish the facility got the funding it deserves, but we can probably accredit that to the erasure of Native culture. We went out back to check out the nature walk, but due to the season the mosquitoes were so rude. We’ll definitely be back.

Yelp
I think the museums along OBX are small collection-type. The collection here is rich and very informative. I learned a lot of history, about art from different tribes. There was one room which was more of an exhibit and resembled a home. The museum generally focused on Native American history at large but was not super helpful in informing you about the Croatan or Roanoke groups which were local to the region prior to European colonization. I understand the historical record is rather sparse but it would have been nice to have more connection to the location we were in. Nevertheless, I learned quite a bit about the role of the code talkers during WWII, saw models of original canoes, and more which were all rather interesting!

Yelp
The Frisco Native American Museum has gone through a MAJOR RENOVATION as a result of the previous hurricanes.I guess they are lucky they didn't lose the whole place. The entire collection has been rearranged, all the displays have been redone. They added some fantastic new exhibits . It's incredible what's done being a non-profit foundation. The older Yelp reviews are very critical of this place and mean spirited. We enjoyed our visit so much. The displays were beautiful, it made us want to learn more about different tribes represented. I bought a gorgeous dream catcher,a painted feather, hand made soap, some beaded bracelets and a cool mug with their logo on it from the gift shop. Our kids found some books in the Book Room and these adorable painted turtles. Unfortunately the Nature trail was closed because of this years hurricane. What a wonderful day ,we cant wait to come back next year.

Yelp
During our vacation in the OBX we experience a great deal of rainy days. With the rainy days came the exploration of trying to find places to visit that we didn't have to be outside and stay wet. We discovered the Frisco Native American Museum quite by accident, but what a pleasant accident that was. I am a huge fan of Native American culture and artifacts. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the exhibits and this little museum is not as little as it looks. And for whatever size it is it holds a great deal of unique pieces and informative information. The midden exhibit made me realize why so much of the town has the midden name. Mitten as a surname is very very prevalent and widespread in various areas in the Cape Hatteras area. As it was raining revenge you're done a few trails but didn't make it far or last long. I am very happy and excited that we stopped to see this museum as it was quite unusual and offered a wide array of Native American history. What's a girl to do? Native American history has been a hobby of mine for many many years.

Yelp
I really liked this museum. I'm not a big Native-American art or history fan, but this museum was very interesting.

Yelp
So I have a background in financial development and curating educational programs for historical nonprofits. Like a lot of smaller museums without huge operating budgets, this place needs some help with updating exhibits, fine tuning interpretation, editing collections, and making improvements to the facility. Overall, I did find the visit enjoyable, they do have a lot of interesting pieces. I lived on a Navajo reservation for a summer as a teen, so there was a certain element of nostalgia for me personally. I thought the exhibit about the locally found midden really interesting. The hat collection? Maybe not so much. It was raining when I went, so I didn't check out the nature trails, but would go back to do so. Yes, there are mosquitoes - welcome to Hatteras. I don't really go anywhere aside from the beach without DEET anyway.

Yelp
I've been working as an archaeologist for about 3 years and have had a little experience working in museums. I personally wouldn't so much call this a museum as much as it is a display of the owner's personal collection of Native America memorabilia. The rooms are just disorganized clutter with little to no information on most of the objects. Many small local museums in the US are like this though, so I guess this place isn't that unusual in the grand scheme of things. The museum can definitely stand for a major reorganization of its exhibits, but I understand that this is often very hard to for small museums to do. The thing that disappointed me the most about this museum is that they had little to no information on the local Native American history in the Outer Banks. I don't know how you can call yourself a Native American Museum in the Roanoke Colony area and have NO information about the Roanoke or Croatan tribes, but whatever. Overall, this is a good place to go if it's a rainy day in the Outer Banks and you can't go to the beach or do other outdoor activities. I still had a nice time wandering around despite my background in archaeology. You'll enjoy this place if you are a fan of Native American art and culture (especially Navajo art. They have a lot of stuff on display from the Southwest), but maybe not so much if you are particularly interested in the local Native American history or archaeology or expecting something like the Smithsonian.

Yelp
It wasn't exactly what we had expected. I was expecting to see they history of the Native Americans in the Hatteras area and instead it was really just a general Museum about Native Americans. We also got bit up trying to go on the nature trail and ended up just turning around due to the bugs.

Yelp
I think this is more like a roadside attraction than a museum. It does need updating as someone suggested. There are many interesting artifacts here, but the space is small, hot and dingy. The gift shop could be better with more Native American items for sale. There's a thrift shop attached to the gift shop that could use some dusting too. I think, as others suggested, with a revamp, this could be a cool museum, but as it is, it is more like a roadside attraction.

Yelp
Interesting and worth a stop if you're in the area, but skip the nature trail walk unless you like mosquitoes!

Yelp
Great place to visit. Displays of artifacts are excellent, a life long collection of Carl Bornfriend. Wonderful nature trail and gift shop. Well worth the admission fee. A must see when visiting the outerbanks!

Yelp
It looks that good ... I'm working on research of the Indians from this area and it's exciting to see a place on the map where I have names to research!! I need to make a trip that way!

Yelp
Didn't stop, seen to many serpent shows in other places! Well turn around and go back , it's not what you think. Carl and Joyce Bornfiriend have assembled Carls life long collection of amazing Native American Artifacts and history. Both are retired teachers who just can't stop educating People. Browse the museum and be amazed at the diversity of this private collection. Spend time talking to Carl, and you will want to make him you life long friend. I know it happened to me. The kids will love all the native american items and they even get to bang a drum.

Yelp
I have been coming to the Outer Banks for over 30 years, but had never stopped at this museum. What a mistake! This place is a true gem!. It houses an amazing collection of artifacts, exhibits, and displays. The gift shop is also quite nice. Make a point to stop here!
