7 Small Wine Towns in Australia to Visit - AFAR

"Richmond is ideally positioned to take advantage of local wineries (don’t miss Frogmore Creek Winery and Stefano Lubiana Wines), culinary offerings (take a cooking class with produce grown and animals raised on the Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School and Farm’s five acres), and wildlife opportunities (get up close and personal with Tasmanian devils, kangaroos, wombats, and koalas at the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary)—all of which are set under a 50-minute drive away." - Jake Emen

Frogmore Creek is absolutely stunning—breathtaking views, a relaxed yet elegant ambiance, and some of the best food and wine we’ve had in Tasmania. The salmon ceviche was a standout—fresh, delicate, and beautifully balanced in flavor. We also enjoyed their wine tasting, which offered a wonderful variety and showcased the quality of their vineyards. Each pour was distinct and memorable. Paired with the setting, it made for such an incredible experience. Can’t wait to come back!

Lovely customer service, fresh and delicious food and an Awesome wine selection with great scenery and environment. Went with my friend on lunch yesterday (Sunday) and enjoyed the overall experience. That male gentleman (forgot the name sorry) who served us was very friendly and awesome with suggestions on food and wines, very knowledgeable! 😊 Keep it up guys, highly recommended visit! 🤗

Restaurant seemed to be bustling for a Sunday lunch session but our food was brought out quickly. All items of food were delicious. We aren’t red wine drinkers so didn’t partake in the paired wines but we enjoyed a glass of curvee followed by a dessert wine each. Wait staff were attentive and courteous. Lovely atmosphere next to the fireplace. Can’t really fault anything.

Had a nice lunch at this winery. Oysters and scallops were topped with very nice sauces that brought out the sweetness of the shellfish. We were not really drinkers so we ordered a 3-wine tasting series to share. Service was prompt and friendly too.

Came here for our first stop on a winery tasting. A very cozy spot with some very nice wines. Service was very good, views were great and plenty of little antique nik’s and nak’s to grab! Definitely recommend for anyone who wants to stop by for some nice local Tasmanian wines!

★★★★★ An absolute gem! This winery restaurant offers not just a meal, but an unforgettable dining experience. Nestled in a stunning setting with breathtaking views, it’s the perfect spot to unwind and indulge. The food is nothing short of spectacular—each dish is a masterpiece, beautifully presented with incredible attention to detail. Every bite bursts with flavor, showcasing fresh, high-quality ingredients that perfectly complement the winery’s exceptional selection of wines. The service is warm and attentive, making the entire experience even more enjoyable. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates fine dining in a picturesque setting!

Everything was amazing! The view, the staff, the food, the wine. My husband and I aren't frequent winery visitors, we're not very good at wine pairings, etc so the vibe inside some wineries can be intimidating. Frogmore was an incredible experience! The staff were very attentive, freely gave suggestions (eg offering a red wine to go with the pork belly) without being pushy. The wine itself was phenomenal, reasonably priced, as well as the food. They've leaped to the top of my list of recommendations when my friends come to Tasmania. I'll be raving about them forever!

Yelp
Take a table with views over vineyards, Pitt Water and out to sea, and you are immediately transported to a pastoral paradise. Excellent service from the wait staff and delicious wines. The main event at Frogmore Creek is the food; make no mistake, the menu here is worthy of multiple hats. An expert construction of local produce, attention to detail is the order of the day here and I feel the chefs deserve a huge amount of praise.

Yelp
The food here was truly amazing something you would see on master chef. It was an art work on a plate and quite an experience. We shared several dishes and they were all wonderful and the wine being on a vineyard is lovely also. Highly recommend lunch and a wine here

Yelp
Excellent and fully deserves a 5 star plus rating. Best meals we've ever had. We went there for our wedding anniversary with 2 of our youngest adult children and it really was so very special in every way. The food, wine, ambience and service just made for a perfect memory. We have recommended our friends who are travelling this month from NSW call in for the ultimate experience. We will definitely be returning. Thank you.

Yelp
Recognised nationally as one of Australia's best food and wine venues, it really does not dissapoint! Went for a wine tasting on a whim (as you do in Tassie as a tourist) and decided to visit Frogmore just out of Hobart. Beautiful estate! Even while the rain poured, as you sit inside looking over the landscape you can't help but take it all in a realise how beautiful everything that surrounds Frogmore is. You walk inside and its high celings, polished flooboards, outdoor area, indoor restaurant, gorgeous views out the window. Wine tasting is $5 per person, unless you buy wine then the fee is waived. All the wines are spectacular and the staff do so well at keeping your attention with their wealth of knowledge. There wasn't a wine that I disliked! And I am not a huge fan of chardonnay's but their one was really good! I think when you get a proper breifing of what the wine is, the flavours it entails and it's history of the winery- it makes a huge difference. We didn't have food, but when I go back I am most definitely going to be doing lunch here! We saw some food and it looked divine, as well as looking at the menu. Great staff, beautiful space and quality food and wine. What more could you ask for?

Yelp
Wine tasting review: while Meadowbank may have a stunning building on a beautiful piece of land with a stellar view, my friends and I were entirely put off by the snooty and condescending nature of the woman serving us. Was it because we weren't wearing expensive clothes? Because we were having fun and not taking life TOO seriously? I'm sorry lady, but a customer is a customer and perhaps you'd be surprised to know that the youths you may have scoffed at fifteen years ago are now in their late twenties and early thirties. The Richmond and Coal River Valley area is a great spot for hitting up a bunch of gorgeous wineries but maybe you should just opt for lunch here and skip ol' snootnose behind the bar, because there are plenty of other charming and hospitable wine tastings to be had along Richmond Road!

Yelp
We did not have a great experience. Maybe I would say it was slightly passable at best. There is no discounting that it is a very attractive space with an attractive restaurant. However, we had a relatively lousy lunch that was nearly microscopic and a wine tasting of several wines that maybe lasted 2 minutes (it was like a shotgun). Awful experience wine-tasting, actually. We came for lunch and figured we would have a lunch that you would expect at a class winery. What we had was a pair of nibbles that were overpriced, undersized and not very good. At least if you are speaking of undersized food it should be good, but it was generally not. 1st- I should say that the wine was fine, however the food was subpar and miniscule. Can you imagine that bread that one would assume might come with the meal was 14 AUD- 14! For bread which they added a ramekin of hummus to which we did not need, and some olive oil/balsamic vinegar. How pitiful. And they do not even make the bread! A few slices of bread for $14 and they do not even make it at their "fancy" winery!! That seems disingenuous to me. For $25, I got 4 slices of overcooked porterhouse steak that was pre-sliced with four potato slices that might add up to 8 fries (although the potatoes were good) with a number of sauces squirted perfectly on the plate. That was it. Literally. It was not very good. We also got a scallop and crab salad plate for $25.The scallops were fine but the crab salad was gross. It tasted past its serving date and had remnants of shell in it. Yuck :( There were 3 scallops, 2 very small scoops of this "crab salad" and some other cream/cheese type of spread in two dollops. That was literally it. It was pretty but not worth its weight in salt. And the crab salad was gross. :( We ate almost none of it. The waitress was so sweet even though she didn't tell us that bread would be 14AUD. She really was. Regardless it was not worth even 1/2 what we paid (including 14$ per glass of wine). We then did the wine tasting and the woman (named Jessica) worked like a machine through the wine collection and we must have tried 8 wines in literally 2 minutes. It was uneventful, uninteresting and therefore disappointing. I would not suggest coming here to anyone even though the grounds are nice and the building is nice. Please go elsewhere, to a place where you will get a good balance of care and worth.

Yelp
Meadowbank is pretty easy to summarise; superb. The building is stunning, constructed from beautiful polished timber with high ceilings and lots of glass and light. The scenery out the huge windows is wonderful, overlooking the vineyard and behind that the coal valley - including the giant Mount Pleasant Radio Observatory dish. As you would expect the wine list features some excellent local wines and the food is outstanding. Restaurant prices are at the upper end for the greater Hobart area, but they are definitely worth it.
