9 Best Museums in Dallas | Condé Nast Traveler

"Located right next to the Dallas Love Field Airport, the Frontiers of Flight Museum dives into aviation history, beginning in the 1920s through World War II and the modern era. The museum also touches on Dallas/Fort Worth's tremendous role in aviation. Most visitors here are pretty serious about all forms of air travel, but that's not to say that mildly interested passersby won't find the museum worthwhile." - Priya Krishna

Overall, it was a phenomenal evening. I took off a star because of the venue and seating not being what is depicted when purchasing a ticket. The seats were so close together, we were on top of perfect strangers and they were quite uncomfortable. We didn't start on time which was a bummer and there were people walking during the performance. The performers were amazing and entertaining. I'd recommend it for date night. The music was beautiful.

Google
Loved seeing all the cool planes and history of them. There were so many interesting aspects of this museum from the in depth exhibits to even being able to hear the planes flying out from lovefield airport right next door! I highly recommend to anyone in the dfw area

My parents came into town for a long weekend. My dad is a retired mechanical engineer who loves airplanes. We went here and although it’s a small museum, it was mighty with its attention to detail and story telling. Some exhibits were being redone and renovated but we still enjoyed walking around. Overall we spent around an hour and a half here.

Google
My Fiance and I spent a couple of hours Here this morning walking around and looking at all of the displays. This was my second time to visit here. But it's been a long time in between so it was nice to revisit it. This was her first time. And thankfully she enjoyed it. It's a really nice museum and the only Other one that I've had the pleasure to visit. The other one has sadly closed. The people who greet you are very nice and give you an excellent pre- visit briefing and tell you a little about what you will be seeing. The gift shop was nice as well. Though I wished they sold more pictures. / Art more variety. Otherwise they have a decent inventory of things to buy. I bought one of their T-Shirts. It's definitely a great place to spend a few hours looking and learning more about Americas Aviation and Space history. While I'm at it. I want to highlight a couple of their attractions, 1. Apollo 5 Capsule, 2. An actual Blue Angels FA-18, 3. The Flying Pancake, 4. The Southwest Airlines History svs Displays. 5 they have a place for children to visit and play around in. So that's just a few of the many fun and interesting things you will see and experience. The cost per person is a reasonable 13.00s it was raining this morning when we visited so that was pretty Cool too. I Highly recommend going and seeing this place it's worth the time and effort.

Google
I had a truly wonderful afternoon with my son at this museum. The experience was made even more special by the exceptional kindness and warm welcome we received from the gentlemen at the entrance, whose courtesy and attentiveness added greatly to our visit.

Google
Frontiers of Flight Museum packs a lot into a mid-sized space. The Apollo 7 command module is a major highlight—one of the few flown capsules you can see up close. Also incredible to see the rare Vought V‑173 “Flying Pancake”—a truly bizarre aircraft that’s worth the visit alone. Solid exhibits on Southwest Airlines and space history. Easy to navigate, great signage, and perfect for all ages. A top aviation stop in Dallas!

Carson

Google
It is great! I had so much fun, I also learned so much new. If there are barely any people, ask the guys in the red vest to go on the helicopter.

Nikki Bruce

Google
This museum is just incredible! I spent way more time here than I thought i would! Everything exhibit just sucked me in, and the props and pieces were just perfect. I will fully admit i also cried during Charlie's Corner, what a beautiful and touching memoir to an incredible man 🫶

Yelp
My fiance and I came here on a Saturday afternoon and had a wonderful time! Most of the volunteers at the museum are veterans and extremely knowledgeable. I highly recommend asking any of them a question, the answers you get are richer than any of the signage! One of them even let a family into one of the helicopters, just because they were friendly with him. There are impressive collections of model planes and even a model plane workshop that you can peek inside and see what's being worked on. The gift shop is kind of sad, and the woman working at the welcome desk could use a smile, but the museum overall is a wonderful place to visit. We will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Great environment for a party! We had our Christmas party at the flight museum & they provided a great environment. I only wish the entire museum would have been open to explore during the event!

James M.

Yelp
We got to the museum and it was closed for the day for an event. There was nothing on the website and no one answers the phone that could've told us this ahead of time we drove all the way from DFW. The hostess cared even less.

Yelp
FOF Museum is... to put it quite simply, boring. It should be free of charge. My Dad is an absolute fanatic for WW2 planes and all of that stuff, and even he was disappointed. The place was spacious and mostly clean, don't get me wrong, but the selection of things to look at was underwhelming. You can't even go in the cockpit of any of the planes. The mold on the walls added to the general feeling of... get me out of here. Also, the smell! Must be the mold, idk. But it's mustyyyy. A few interesting things here and there, but a waste of time (in my opinion) and money.
google avatar

Vianai A. C.

Yelp
I love this museum. It's so close to the airport, they have a great view of planes taking off, and you can hear air traffic control. The flight attendant fashion exhibit is also a really cute blast to the past. It's never crowded when I go and is kid friendly.

Jennifer W.

Yelp
We stopped in on a quick visit to Dallas and were both surprised and impressed by this museum. My son, who is a bit of a military airplane fanatic, enjoyed it thoroughly. Many beautifully detailed models as well as quite a collection of historic aircraft.
google avatar

Caroline N.

Yelp
I have been here during the day, but it doesn't compare to seeing and experiencing this museum at night. I attended a candlelight concert at the frontiers of flight museum and it was magical. Parking was plentiful, there was a bar and two different lines to purchase drinks.
google avatar

Ana K.

Yelp
This is a great museum for anyone interested in aviation. The volunteers are friendly and helpful. There's also a Southwest Airlines exhibit.
google avatar

Katherine S.

Yelp
When I was here last, I heard a bunch of kids playing in the play area. Really sounded like they were having a blast!!
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
Great aviation museum. They have great exhibits on Southwest Airlines and an actual plane used in service to walk through. Excellent place to take the kids.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
We brought all the kids and the grandparents here for my son's 4th birthday and it was a smash hit! So many amazing planes and other aircraft to see, and an impressive collection of model planes. My kids were enchanted and so was I! And so was grandpa! Love that they have a playground for the kids that's plane themed, and it is wicked cool to be able to get into the southwest plane that's going through the side of the building -- very cool! The kids still play with the toy planes they got in the gift shop everyday!
google avatar

James G.

Yelp
Any aviation enthusiast- get to this museum. Ten bucks to get in!!! Multiple discounts too. I learned so much about the World Wars and the aircraft used. Plus life size replicas and real planes used in the wars are here. Two floors and an amazing Southwest Airlines exhibit with actual 737 airplanes to walk inside. There is also a kids play area, small gift shop and plenty of restrooms and water fountains. Parking is free too. It's also next to the runway at Love Field so if you love watching planes take off / you could spend hours looking out the windows on the second floor watching the runway. The section I lived was actually all about the balloons and blimps and the story of the Hindenburg. It's fascinating and there are relics from the crash to look at.
google avatar

Sherwin C.

Yelp
Great experience both with amazing people and an amazing museum. The staff was super helpful in guiding us around different features of the facility and had answers to all the questions we asked. The facility itself is quite large with 2 floors worth of exhibits. These were presented very well with lots of information to accompany each exhibit, including information about the time period if it was relevant. There are plenty of amazing photo taking opportunities as the museum is well lit with lots of space to position yourself for each picture. In addition to planes, there are also plenty of related items for you to learn more about teach time period. Overall, amazing museum and well worth making a special trip to visit.
google avatar

Garnie B.

Yelp
It's a great place to go see artifacts, history and information about flight. Had the opportunity to see a concert there, a candlelight quartet. It's really neat because they dim the lights and the acoustics of the museum were perfect for the concert. I enjoy browsing and walking around looking at all the history of flight, and some of the trivia that was available. It is easy to find, and there's plenty of parking. I highly encourage anyone who is interested in flight, the history of flight and finding new trivia items about flights to visit this location.

David R.

Yelp
The museum is extremely sparse and is a big disappointment. I wish they would have brought over some of the aircraft from the museum that closed at Addison Airport. So much area and so little on display overall.
google avatar

Serhii K.

Yelp
the employee who greets clients should and is obliged to approach the driver, and not stand in the center and shout, lower the window because you parked in the wrong place, and I have a computer here in the center. It's not a client problem that you have one computer. put two or approach the car from the driver's side. 05.22.24
google avatar

Judy I.

Yelp
We attended a candlelight string quartet event here. It was a nice venue and we enjoyed looking at the aircraft prior to the concert. You can hear planes take off and land over your head, which is interesting. Plenty of parking.
google avatar

Kelsey R.

Yelp
Flight Museum Affordable ticket price-$10 Overall there is a lot of great and fun content to learn from. I really enjoyed seeing the airlines outfits throughout the years and the space section. I think the museum could use a little bit of updating. A lot of the simulators were shut down, probably due to COVID. Some of the TVs were not on with the content. You can rent the area out for a party, so if you are super into planes that could be a unique way to celebrate an event. The museum store was running a little low on merchandise. Overall, I had a good time but left wanting a little more from them. Total 3/5 stars.
google avatar

Sunny L.

Yelp
This is a cool place to go see aircraft and items about flight. I had the opportunity to see the museum for a conference and it was set up pretty cool. It's really neat to see planes as there are speakers on stage talking. I enjoyed walking around and seeing things as gandered around the place which is pretty huge. Very easy to see from the main street with plenty of parking. Definitely recommended for anyone who has an interest in aircraft and history. Pros: Parking, location, airplanes, history Cons: Not for non-avaition aficionados Stars: 5

John H.

Yelp
We had an issue with a recent event and the formatted response I received did not even respond to the problem. ALL SHOULD BE WARNED IF YOU HAVE AN ISSUE you will not receive assistance to solve your problem. DO NOT RECOMMEND BASED ON CUSTOMER SERVICE.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a cool museum for anyone into Aviation--on and off-planet! They have some nice planes and helicopters to peruse, and tons of educational material to review. Nice displays for different wars, including a section for the Tuskegee airmen! I didn't have time to see a lot as I was with a toddler, but he really loved being up close to everything. Definitely something to take children to who are into air or space travel. Added bonus: at least one of the men working was a former pilot and had a lot to share. I've been here once before for a business event, so it can also be rented as a unique event space!
google avatar

Jackie C.

Yelp
What an incredible spot. I have been here for several events but haven't had a chance to review. Most recently we have loved coming for the indoor playground when the days were too hot this past summer. My daughter loves it and all the kids that go are always so sweet. I love when kids can just be kids and play with others.
google avatar

Garry H.

Yelp
Mikey and I have now visited 4 aviation museums. This one, at Love Field, ties for best. This place is so big! Two different rooms and an upstairs. In one room is some Southwest Airlines commercial stuff, and some stuff from the SR-71 Blackbird spy plane. Really neat. Entering the big room, there's planes everywhere! There is a small room where they do a lot of very detailed model planes. There are several smaller planes like you and I might own, if we were rich of course! But the majority are military aircraft. Very interesting and informative. They even have the Apollo 7 command module, on loan from the Smithsonian. Very interesting. We spent hours here, and loved every
google avatar

Claire P.

Yelp
I enjoyed finding this spot for my pilot brother-in-law, and the whole family loved spending about two hours here. There are a lot of planes and objects to look at and the space is really nice. Some of the labels need updating though, as items they discuss are no longer on display. The museum gift shop was subpar and mainly consisted of kids toys. The price to get in is also a little steep, and because of these three things we decided to give it a 4/5.
google avatar

Armon A.

Yelp
A wonderful collection of aviation history. My father, a retired fighter and commercial pilot, absolutely loved the museum. He shared many stories and was able to see airplanes he once flew many years ago. Great for the whole family.
google avatar

Andy G.

Yelp
Very nice museum with a lot of different planes from different historical periods. A 737-300 you can walk inside, a command module from Apollo 8, and nice exhibits about the history of aviation. Worth a visit if you are interested in that.
google avatar

Nick J.

Yelp
I think this is a pretty cool museum to kill an hour or two on any given day. There are great planes to see up close and personal like a Blue Angel or the "Flying Pancake" which I had never heard of before but was definitely amazing to see. There are a lot of WWI/II artifacts and reels to feast your eyes on. The other half of the museum is more about commercial planes which is intriguing to walk through without seats or passengers, but you cannot step into an actual cockpit which is a letdown. There are a lot of limitations (look but don't touch) which I get because plenty would fall apart if kids were allowed unlimited access. But parts of that half appeared breaking down already as every screen we saw was not operational. Speaking of kids...I don't really know if they'll get a kick out of it like adults. While there is a playground of sorts, there's very little to it. And kids want to put their hands on everything which is the opposite of what you can do here. Seems the demographic for FOFM would be veterans and history enthusiasts.
google avatar

Wilson L.

Yelp
It was a fun spot to kill some time here. It was nice seeing some history and planes here. Definitely worth checking out once.
google avatar

J J.

Yelp
Kid friendly place and the staff is so nice to everyone. Glad my son was having such a good time.
google avatar

Max G.

Yelp
We were looking for something to do before going to an event so we stopped by to check it out. The employees were super nice and inviting. They have a lot of different airplanes on display. They have a kids play area and a plane to go into to see. I would definitely recommend taking your family to see this museum the kids would love it!
google avatar

Doug C.

Yelp
Perfect place to visit for the aviation fan and anyone who has or wants to fly on an airplane. The museum offers a very comprehensive historical perspective of mankind's effort to get into the sky. As school was out for Thanksgiving day vacation there were lots of kids there. Be sure to chat up the red vest volunteers for extra insight into the museum. Southwest Airlines has a separate wing showing the history of the airline and getting started in Texas and now around the world. I was impressed with how much aviation history is associated with Dallas and Texas.
google avatar

Aleh V.

Yelp
Nice, little museum near Dallas Love! Easy to spend 1.5-2 hours. We had fun. Parking was convenient.
google avatar

Dan P.

Yelp
For the $10 admission, this museum has quite a lot of unique items to see. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of space memorabilia. Pretty easy to spend an hour or two here, depending on your familiarity with the industry. My biggest gripe is that they are not keeping the place very clean. Everything, including the exhibits and planes themselves, were absolutely filthy: covered in dust, trash, spills, etc. No excuse for this -- hire a cleaning crew to dust and pick things up.
google avatar

Nikki L.

Yelp
Had a good time here with my husband as I spent seven years as an aviator in the Navy. I think it's geared more toward children, but I had a good time looking at all of the aircraft and reading more about aviation history in Texas! We also got in for free as they were hosting (another) children's event that we didn't know was happening, so that was a big plus.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Hidden gem right in Dallas next to love field. Lots of interesting planes in a modern building and clean fresh exhibits. Not much fancy computer interactivity or displays but perfectly maintained full and partial scale models. The space is large and hearing and seeing the commercial jets from live adds more direct effect. I think it's a bit expensive but worth going at least once. The large commercial airliners and Southwest Airlines memoir is is impressive.
google avatar

Iris S.

Yelp
Honestly, I was super excited to visit this museum prior to visiting. I lived down the block and ever since moving to Dallas 3 years ago it has been on the agenda. We had a buy one get one free coupon which was great. Without this I feel I would have overpaid by a lot as this museum lacked so much. The layout was very poor and confusing. They did not even have a map. Apparently the people in the red vests were volunteers, but we had to ask to find out. The place also smelled very badly when you first entered of mold and mildew. I will give them kudos for the awesome planes they had throughout the space, however the space was just not utilized well and the exhibits have not been updated in over 20 years it seems in most cases. For being connected to Love Field which is so involved with Southwest Airlines we thought there would be more information about them, nope. I will say it was cool to walk into the old planes. But that didn't hold our attention. Overall, I would not recommend. Very disappointed.
google avatar

Elo S.

Yelp
If you're an adult who loves history I'm sure this place is 5 stars for everyone else it's a little boring. Good museums are interactive and educational for everyone. The main area has airplanes that you cannot climb Into, lots of reading and awkward areas for educational video viewing. I came here with my two kids and my husband but we had to split up after just a few minutes when my kids were bored to death. I chose to take them to the children's area. We were the only ones there and it was fantastic for about 5 minutes until all the parties let out and the place turned into a circus. So many kids at once! It was loud and very overwhelming. I feel bad for the people who paid to have their parties there. It's not cheap. I went last Sunday and the kids soon became hungry but the cafe was not open. So we left in search of food.
google avatar

Michelle E.

Yelp
I recently purchased the annual family membership for the museum ($75 for two adults, two kids, guest passes, etc). Decided to take my little one on a mommy/son date. We arrived around 4:15, 45 minutes before they closed. It's been absolutely freezing here lately so it was nice to have some indoor activities. We went straight to the kids side and checked out the vintage Southwest Airlines stuff as well as a few WWII plane cockpits. The historic importance of much of what we saw went over my 5 yr olds head (literally and figuratively) but I'm grateful the museum could keep his attention as long as it did. After we strolled through the real life stuff, he went for the painted plywood airplane with a painted on cockpit that he could sit in and turn a wheel (as if he were driving/flying) the "plane" with a slide out the backside. We will be back... we never made it to the big section to the left.
google avatar

John Q.

Yelp
I went to Frontiers of Flight Museum for an office Christmas party and we practically had the whole museum to ourselves. The museum is very spacious and does a good job of informing people of what they are looking at. My absolute favorite piece is right towards the front that has a large # of astronaut signatures on it - extremely cool. It looks like the museum actually has an active airplane plugged right into the side of the building you can walk through - this section was closed off to us so I can't confirm that, but I hope its true. Overall it was a nice museum that I would consider going back to.
google avatar

Emrose B.

Yelp
Great place for people interested in the history of aviation! I managed to grab a coupon on Groupon or else I wouldn't have came here but I'm glad I did. They have quite a few exhibits ranging from the beginning of aviation to space exploration. The globe that displays the earth and many other things really stood at to me. Never saw anything like it before. This place is rather small but packed with information. I learned a lot and this a place you should check out if you're interested in learning about aviation history! Take flight.

Isabel S.

Yelp
The visit was OK. We came for a school field trip and the kids liked the planes. One thing I will say is the YOUNGER staff working there have NO personality or enthusiasm whatsoever. If you're teaching a class for kids, smile a bit.
google avatar

Robert G.

Yelp
Awesome. They have the sr-71 simulator and kids playground and lots of interesting aircraft. Definitely recommended.
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
Outstanding aviation museum with excellent static displays, miniatures, and dioramas wonderfully informative and the Youth Flight Discovery play area was great for when your little one needs to get their wiggles out. Sadly my camera on my phone was broken so I couldn't include any pictures at the moment.
google avatar

Richa T.

Yelp
Came here the other day for a fun afternoon Pros: + Parking - they don't have too many spots, but it is definitely more than enough for the number of people that frequent there + Student Discounts for admission tickets as well + Can rent out the venue for private events + Plenty of great restaurants nearby to have lunch/dinner at after the museum + Great photo opportunities! Cons: - since it can be rented out, be sure to double check if the place is actually closed
google avatar

Stephanie K.

Yelp
I had fun just looking at the different planes! The volunteers were awesome to learn from too! They have so much to share- great experiences and super cool to hang with! Thank you Ron, Paul and I think it's John?
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
I live close by so I brought my nieces and nephews ages 6-12. They thought the larger items like the pancake plan and helicopter were cool. But they thought it was too much reading. They enjoyed the large southwest plane but over all were kind of board and we're ready to leave in about an hour.
google avatar

Charlotte J.

Yelp
Fun little museum! I'm not all that interested in airplanes, so I probably wouldn't have come if my sister and her boyfriend hadn't come in from out of town and wanted to go (my sister's boyfriend was really excited to see this place). Ultimately, I'm glad we came! We bought the 4-person Groupon, which got the four of us in for $24 instead of $40 (great deal!). The museum is out at Love Field, housed in an old airplane hanger, and packed to the brim with airplanes and spacecraft, from the Wright Brothers through the World Wars to the moon landing all the way to present day machines. It was definitely educational (I especially enjoyed learning about the Women Airforce Service Pilots--WASPS--from WWII). There were lots of little videos to watch, placards to read, and even a few hands-on exhibits (a fighter pilot chair you could strap yourself into, things like that). All of the docents were retired veterans, and they all seemed really happy to be there and happy to answer any questions. The back room has a great playground and dining area, so it's clearly the perfect place for a birthday party for a kid who loves airplanes. If you're not interested in airplanes very much, you might still have a good time, but don't expect to spend more than an hour there.
google avatar

Dennis K.

Yelp
This place is DOPE. If you think airplanes are cool or if you have an interest in learning a little more about the history of airlines based at Love Field, then this place is well worth the price and the 2 hours that it will take to walk through it. It's a like a smaller version of the Smithsonian Museum at Dulles Airport in rural Virginia. There aren't a lot of interactive exhibits or 3D movies. This isn't the Perot Museum where everything is made to cater to the whims of your ADD children. It's just planes. And helicopters. And old timers who volunteer to provide information and who actually build and maintain a lot of the displays.
google avatar

Sarah O.

Yelp
This museum has a lot of history and beautiful things to look at. The craftsmanship of these planes is exactly why you want to go. They have it set up in chronological order and it takes about 30 to 45 minutes to go through so it's not too long for the kids.
