Gas + Tacos? OK, maybe not together, but at the same place, sure.
There's really nothing better than filling up a tank of gas and getting some tacos on the side while you're on your way to your next destination. And better yet, not only are they any tacos, but they were some of the best damn tacos we had ever had.
Our first vacation stop in Dallas strangely led us to a gas station. However, it was not by accident. I had read some articles raving about Fuel City (Texas Monthly called them the greatest tacos ever sold), but also read some on the other end (Dallas Observer called them some of the worst in the city). So who's right? Let's see .....
We dropped in on a hot Friday afternoon and arrived at 1pm. The parking lot was packed when we pulled in. I had never seen so many cars parked at a gas station .... but then again this wasn't any ol' gas station. Plenty of people were on line for the tacos or already chowing down on their lunch. The menu was posted right at the ordering window, which there were a few of, but only one was open. It was simple - quesadillas, burritos or tacos - with a selection of 5 different meats (picadillo, beef fajita, chicken fajita, barbacoa, pastor) to choose from for your flour or corn tortilla vessel.
The experts spoke. The people spoke. So, simply put, we were here strictly for the tacos! At $1.62 (plus tax), we couldn't resist our temptation to order everything, so we did just that. We both ordered 5 tacos each - 1 of each meat. I ordered the flour tortilla, while my other half ordered them in the corn tortilla.
While we waited, we also noticed multiple people walking around with cups of corn from the corn wagon parked right next to the taco ordering window, so what do we do? We grabbed a cup for ourselves of course. They came in small ($2), medium ($3) and large ($6). We ordered a small and watched intently as the lady put it together. Basically, there was some mayo, cheese and lots and lots of corn and it was freaking amazing. Such a simple creation and yet so good. A must order for anyone here. If we didn't order 5 tacos each, I would have ordered another cup of corn at the end to wash down my tacos.
Anyhow, back to the main event, the tacos. First off, after biting into the tacos, we both agreed that the flour tortilla was the way to go. The texture of it was much smoother and it just provided for a better vessel for the meats. Second, EVERYTHING was excellent. All of the meats were extremely juicy with oils dripping out, just the way we like it. They were all topped with onions, cilantro and wedges of lime, along with their hot sauces on the side. In addition, they didn't skimp out on the meats either as there was plenty of it in them. Honestly, the tacos were really the perfect size and I would say 3-4 is a healthy serving for anyone.
Bottom line - The hype is damn real. I don't know if these are the best tacos ever sold, but they are worth the trip. I would say they are worth every penny, but it's not many pennies because they are only $1.62 each, which is extremely cheap for a taco in 2019. To me, these are a steal. I've had many tacos in my lifetime and these rank right up there with the best that I've ever .... EVERRR tried. Period.
