Fufu Hakone (Hakonemachi, Ashigarashimo-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The FUFU brand is well known in Japan for its modern interpretation of the ageless ryokan tradition, and Hakone is well known as a little slice of mountainside paradise less than an hour by train from Tokyo. Put them together and you get FUFU Hakone, a 39-room escape that’s as fine an example of the genre as you could wish for — calming vistas, comfortable and handsome interiors, lovingly crafted kaiseki dinners, and healing hot-spring baths. Here there’s a twist: the waters in the public onsen are from a source high in exfoliating sulfate, while the in-room baths are served by a chloride-rich spring for moisturizing effect." - Tablet Hotels

We had the pleasure of staying at FUFU Hakone, a traditional ryokan, during a recent family vacation to Japan. The accommodations are top-notch, nestled discreetly into the mountainside. While I'm aware that there are more than a handful of ryokan in the Hakone vicinity, I have to believe this is one of the best, if not the very best, in the area. Please know that I don't hand out 5-star ratings lightly. Some of you will rely on this review when planning your vacation, just like I used the input of others when planning mine. As such, I'd like to say that I take this endeavor seriously. ||Where to begin?! Our rooms were spacious and well-designed, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Better yet, each room had its own onsen (naturally fed hot spring bath), which is beyond delightful. The food was a highlight and some of the very best we experienced during our entire stay in Japan. If you visit, make sure to try their Japanese curry and sesame seed salad dressing. All of the staff were gracious and attentive to any of our requests. That said, there was one particular employee who was a gold star, Yoko Michikawa. This young woman was a stand-out in every regard, a true hospitality professional. I couldn't write this review without identifying her personally. ||If you're fortunate enough to visit Hakone, you will be well served by staying at FUFU Hakone!

This hotel is truly special and our stay was nothing short of spectacular. The property is gorgeous and the private onsens in room provide a spa-like and relaxing experience. The hotel restaurant was easily the best meal had on our 2 week trip to Japan - the food presentation and unique Japanese cuisine courses were unmatched. The service at this hotel was above and beyond. Our group had the pleasure of meeting Yoko, who upon arrival ensured that we felt welcome and comfortable. She immediately catered to our group, ensuring we were satisfied with our meal selections, reservation times, and room accommodations. Yoko not only has the kindest heart but is an expert in hospitality and made our stay unforgettable. A heartfelt thank you to FuFu Hakone and especially to Yoko Michikawa for making our stay so memorable!

An oasis of peace after 2 weeks touring Japan. We stayed for 2 nights and didn’t want to leave.|We were met at Gora station by a nice comfortable car , with their signature scent. On pulling up at the hotel, staff appeared to welcome us and lead us in for a very welcome drink. |Our lovely host sat with us, going through our plans, time for meals, any dietary restrictions and explained everything. We were then led to our room. We had a standard room in the sugi building, it was bliss. Smelt beautiful, perfectly quiet, everything you could need, own onsen of hot spring water. So many amenities in the room, everything done with such thought . |If you wanted more if anything, you put it in a cupboard, pressed the bell, and the cupboard was replenished from the outside of the room. |Lounge wear and night wear is provided, most people went to dinner in their lounge wear. |We ate both menus , there is so much food that in the first night we were truly outfaced! The second night we had the teppanyaki , such a lovely experience , our chef knew how we wanted our meal and cooked it to perfection. Breakfast was typical Japanese, and again a huge meal.|We visited the main onsen on both days, and fortunate to have it to ourselves. Huge windows out on to the trees, just stunning. |Our train times the day we left were a bit early, so they prepared a “western “ breakfast which was quicker. ||The area of Hakone is peaceful to wander around, we visited the Hakone museum of art and wandered around the gardens and museum. The cable car was so busy, we went as far as the volcano, and came back, much preferring the peacefulness in the town and at FuFu.

A really comfortable hotel showing real attention to their guests. Great room - spacious, well fitted, lovely to have private onsen. Food very good ( and lots of it). Most outstanding though was the flexibility and concern they showed to getting things right for their guests. Our group had some complicated food needs which had not been totally accurately communicated in advance. Once things were clarified they took it all in their stride and made sure all dishes matched restrictions and took real care.||They also showed flexibility as possible around meal times when our plans needed to change. ||All the staff were friendly and attentive and it was a real pleasure to stay at Fufu Hakone.

This space and hotel is gorgeous. The rooms are exceptional and the staff is incredibly kind and friendly.|| Although, not all, but most of the services were incredibly slow. I had to ask several times over the course of the day for things as simple as salt or an extra pillow. ||While I didn’t need these items immediately upon request. Having to wait all day and ask multiple times for the same small item is incredibly frustrating. ||For being a Michelin hotel its facade definitely lives up to that. But the service and food could be better. Especially given the price and Michelin title.

My wife and i had a great time here. The staff were extremely nice, the rooms were clean and spacious and food was great. The private onsen in the room was my favourite part, i loved going in every morning and night. The breakfast was fantastic and plentiful, was enough to keep you going throughout the day. We tried both the Kaiseki and Teppanyaki for dinner with the preference being the Kaiseki. Gore is a beautiful town too. We would love to come back again one day.

We stayed at Fufu for our overnight trip in Hakone, and everything about it exceeded our expectations. The hotel is lovely, the rooms are relaxing, the food is delicious, but the staff blew us away. Everyone we interacted with was so kind and so helpful. We had no issues getting shuttles/cars to and from everywhere we wanted to visit in Hakone. Takayuki-san not only picked us up from our dinner, but then shifted to the bar as our bartender and introduced us to some of our new favorite drinks. Fufu Hakone is truly a little slice of paradise, and I can only hope I’m lucky enough to return one day!

We stayed there during peak season. This is a traditional Japanese hotel with all the amenities of a super luxury hotel. Very thoughtful details - pj, lounge suits, etc. our rooms were probably the most beautiful rooms I’ve seen. Each room had a natural hot bath.
