"Over 60,000 meticulously strung together pieces of seashells and corals decorate this stunning underwater-themed temple in the hills of Taiwan. Instead of the usual lion-dog statues that preface more traditional temples, dragon head turtles are the guardians of the choice here. Located five miles from the sea, this shrine is an homage to the 18 disciples of Buddha, Matsu (the goddess of the sea), and a Buddhist monk named Ji Gong—a quirky monastic who drank profusely and ate a lot of meat, yet was an advocate for the poor. Taiwan is a place that embraces polytheism, and it’s quite common to see a multitude of deities housed peacefully in the same space. While there are over 15,000 temples spread across the island, this nautical sea shrine has a unique sense of quirkiness. Built in 1996, it took two years to complete the entire structure. The entrance is adorned with a long row of shell-beaded chandeliers, and the main attraction is a narrow five-foot-tall tunnel packed with bright white coral on all sides. Even the incense burners are graced with a thick layer of shell and coral stubs. There is a caveat though. With reef systems being decimated around the globe, the temple has drawn some controversy among conservationists. The environmental repercussions of this coral-jeweled pantheon is questionable, though staff have said that the corals are not of the endangered sort." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Actually a very unique temple, since it is way up in the hills and very hidden. Also it is fully made out of corals and seems to have quite of history behind it. Nonetheless, I still wonder, why there is a temple fully made out of corals on the hill. Nobody really wanted to interact with us or probably couldn't interact with us, since nobody spoke english.

One of the tourist attractions in the Sanzhi district, the interior of the entire temple is made of coral and shells. Mainly located in the Jigong Living Buddha Hall temple, there is also a shell cave where eighteen arhats rest. The shell cave is very narrow and low, and you must be careful when entering and exiting to avoid hitting your head. You can pay small donation to go there

A temple build with seashells. Interesting and quite beautiful temple if you like to visit temples. Main god is Ji Gong 濟公 with 18 Lo Han 十八羅漢. You are required to made prayers and before you are allow to enter the temple. Didn't took pictures of the inner part as I'm too busy praying. 😅

Fantastic temple to visit. This place took 20 years to build according to the staff. Although the temple is 8 kms away from the ocean, they collected all the materials before they build the temple because the god requested to build this temple on the site.

Google
4 stars because it’s really a weird ornate style temple. Main shrine area and tunnels are constructed with sea reef coral. I never seen temple like this in all of S. East Asia / China/Korea/ Japan. There isn’t much history text or context that describes why or how this came to be. I hope they didn’t kill living coral reef for this.

Wonderful and amazing small temple worshipping Ji Gong. Worth a visit. Made up of a lot of coral and reef. Inaccessible and there is hardly any mobile phone reception. Driving up is dangerous considering the narrow lane.
