Fugaku Gunjo (Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The small boutique hotel that is Fugaku Gunjo is perched on the remote east coast of Izu Peninsula, with jaw-dropping views of Mount Fuji to the north. Its eight rooms are all positioned to take full advantage of that fact, and each comes with its own open-air soaking tub to take it all in. Public spaces consist of a series of water gardens with a bar, plus some characteristic cherry blossoms. Spacious, upscale rooms include luxe furniture, private terraces, and tatami sections." - Tablet Hotels

On the way to the Ryokann (旅館) the drive is rough, but it is well worth it. Because of the jet lag, I went back to our room before the end of the French Kaiseki (a combination of the French full course and the Japanese formal meal) dinner, so they were able to bring the rest of my meal to our room. Thank you. 🥰

After reading the previous reviews mixed with my own travels across Japan at all levels I believe Fugaku Gunjo deserves 4 stars. The good * Privacy - the entire estate has roughly 8 suites only which means you'll unlikely run into of the other guests * Size - huge suites with multiple resting and lounging areas as well as a full size bathrooms * Location - situated atop a hill, all suites have outdoor private onsen with amazing views of Fuji. * Mini Bar - FREE Could improve * Service level - during check in and meal service the staff are as other reviews put it "hesitant" I know English may not be their first language but it's mostly the attitude * Dinner Menu - I can see the effort , but it left a lot to be desired

Gorgeous stay. Unfortunately, Fuji was hiding on me. Came here after two days diving at Kuroki. The in-room tub and delicious food was a perfect way to end the trip… not to mention some drinks.

We had an amazing time at Fugako Gunjo celebrating our honeymoon. The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated. The view of the bay and Mount Fuji is beautiful. The private dining experience is very special and the food has gourmet standards. Service is impeccable from start to finish - especially T. Sato made us feel very welcome. We highly recommend this hotel for a luxurious, peaceful and romantic stay.

A very memorable weekend - We were delayed by one day because of a record breaking typhoon at the end of August 2024, but the team at Fugaku Gunjo were kind enough to allow us to arrive the day later and stay the full 2 nights that we paid for no extra cost. It was also memorable because we planned our engagement during our stay and in the moment Mount Fuji peaked through the clouds to witness it. The team also prepared a beautiful bouquet of flowers as requested from my fiance, even while a typhoon was happening and it would have been difficult to have them delivered. The team at Fugaku Gunjo are so wonderful and work hard to ensure every part of our stay was perfect. Thank you Sato san and team! Your efforts did not go unnoticed. I also highly commend the food. We got the half board option and my goodness the food was Michelin Star level. All the food was sourced from the local region and were so fresh and well prepared for us. Sato also took the time to explain where things are from and local specialities. The fun part was we were allowed to wear PJs or our Yukatas to the meals as we had our own dining room. The rooms were emasculate and very clean. Our view and private hot spring was directly facing Fuji. We also had great internet connectivity and could watch Netflix all day with a fully stocked fridge (which we ended up doing because our room was so comfortable and had everything we needed for a relaxing holiday). Don’t hesitate to book Fugaku Gunjo. It was a truly beautiful experience!

Our stay at Fugaku Gunjo was exceptional and a highlight of our trip to Japan. We weren’t lucky to see mt Fuji (it was cloudy) but the room and the view were still amazing. Dinner and breakfast were worthy a michelin star restaurant. And the service and hospitality of the staff were incredible. Will definitely visit again and hopefully next time we’ll see Fujisan.

This is really an auberge but added by a very good view of Mt. Fuji across the Suruga Bay (if you are not unlucky weather wise), excellent amenities to sleep and hot spring spa. To save writing details I should highlight the shortfalls. There were no writing desk and memo pad, bath towel was a little too small and a latest model TV set did not receive BS1 channel to catch overseas news. Staff are mostly relatively young and less experienced. So the main interest lies in eating. The dinner was not quite so good as shown in the hotel HP. So a little disappointed at an initial stage by the taste of “amuse” but overall quite satisfactory. I will show you what they were by my photography except amuse. After second thought our timing of the visit was not quite good. To find better seafood visiting in autumn to winter could be better ( to expect to see a clear view of Mt. Fuji as well) However dishes of Kuromutsu (sea bass) and roasted sirloin steak were excellent and delicious. The style of cuisine is mostly French but good sashimi(raw fishes) served and a bowl of cooked rice were in a Japanese style. As my wife does not drink wine I for myself neglected the list of wines and instead had vin blanc and rouge by glass, first Dom. Innocenti Saint Véran Reserve Jobert (chardonnay) which was not quite acceptable and so had Italian Castello di Gavi(cortese) and for rouge Spanish volver(tempranillo), the latter two were quite good. The breakfast was beautiful and tasted very good. Lastly an appropriate lobby with sea views for before and after dinner drinks could ideally be recommended to be organized.
