Fugaku Wind Cave is an interesting lava tube formed over 1,000 years ago by an eruption of Mt. Fuji. Compared to the nearby Narusawa Ice Cave, this one offers a wider and more comfortable passage, allowing for an easy and pleasant walk through its cool, dark interior.
Inside, the temperature remains around 3°C year-round, and during the Edo period the cave was used as a natural refrigerator for silkworm eggs and seeds. The visit takes about 15–20 minutes, and buying a combined ticket for both caves is convenient and recommended, as they complement each other perfectly.
What I found most captivating were the walls covered with vivid green mosses and lichens, their color strikingly contrasting with the glossy black lava. Interestingly, these plants grow even in the deeper parts of the cave, where artificial lighting allows them to photosynthesize, creating a mysterious and almost surreal atmosphere.
