"This restaurant inside the grand Fujiya Hotel serves all the classics impeccably, but the Japanese curry lunch is the thing to get. Crab, scallops, shrimp, and squid are perfectly cooked in the seafood curry for which they're known, but beef is a better match for the spicy-sweet roux-thickened sauce. They'll bring you an assortment of six pickles and condiments to add as you like. The curry (which came to Japan by way of British troops) is served in a silver gravy boat with rice on a large white plate with a fork. There is excellent local beer on offer, and service skews formal. The white-tablecloth dining room is a sight to see: Ornate carved woodwork, and hand-painted wildflowers and birds, decorate the ceiling. Dramatic windows on three sides frame the mountainside foliage." - Brandon Presser

We had a lovely stay at the Fujiya Hotel! This was the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. The grounds of the hotel are gorgeous. We loved the views from the breakfast room in the main dining hall. The onsen spa was amazing. Our room was very spacious and the service was top notch. The hotel is easily accessible from the bus stops in town. There were cute antique shops surrounding the hotel. This was everyone’s favorite hotel from our 2 week trip to Japan! We will be back one day.

This is a beautiful hotel set in stunning grounds. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The rooms are beautifully appointed and you can bathe in the hot spring water in the privacy of your own bathroom if you choose not to use the onsen . The only criticism is the hardness of the beds, they were very uncomfortable.

OMG. Amazing stay at this hotel in Hakone . The hotel is a mix of the old history with modern luxury. The room was large and very comfortable . Amenities were perfect for going to the mineral bath and throughout the stay . Breakfast every morning before our exploring was exceptional and the dining room is beautiful. Don’t forget to take a walk and pick up the koi food to feed the fish out of your hand . It was off season when we went and very cool and raining but it changed nothing to make the stay perfect . We saw the area using the pass and it was a perfect location with a short walk to train station or by courtesy van at hotel . Great stay for three nights . Very clean and relaxing . One stop up the mountain is a wonderful Art Museum.

Staying at Fujiya Hotel in Hakone was a truly special experience. This historic property is beautifully restored, full of charm and character, and offers a rare opportunity to connect with Japan’s rich hospitality heritage. It genuinely feels like stepping back in time—in the best possible way. Service throughout our stay was excellent—definitely a 5-star experience. We had breakfast once in the stunning, historic Fujiya dining room and it was absolutely worth it. We also had dinner at Cascade, which was nice, though there was a small language mix-up (I asked if the duck course was duck breast and was told yes—but ended up being served the fish instead). It made for a funny memory during an otherwise lovely meal. The onsen was a highlight—tranquil, beautifully designed, and with peaceful views of the surrounding mountains. We also really appreciated the hotel's collection of historical artifacts. One of the coolest parts was seeing original restaurant menus going back to the late 1800s and old guest logbooks. It gave me a real sense of connection to the long legacy of the hotel—it’s rare to feel that kind of personal tie to a place. The location is also excellent. It's right along the Hakone Golden Route, with bus stops just outside the entrance. We used the Hakone Free Pass and found it incredibly easy to get around. The staff gave us a helpful printed map showing local routes and tips, which made exploring stress-free. If there’s one downside, it’s the pricing of certain extras. For example, a small bowl of mixed nuts at the bar was ¥1,100, and two coffees with cake came to ¥6,000. Given the already premium room rates, it would be a thoughtful gesture if small bar snacks like nuts were complimentary with drinks for hotel residents. Still, Fujiya Hotel is truly one of a kind. If you appreciate history, tradition, and top-notch service, this is a memorable and meaningful place to stay in Hakone.

Did not stay here, but have to give a shout out to the wonderful staff who went above and beyond when my husband and I took the wrong bus going the wrong direction of our hotel at night. We stopped in asking for a telephone, and the intern (very sweet polish gal with perfect English), communicated with the other staff, who then they called our hotel to postpone our dinner, called a taxi (none available), and then transported us with their own shuttle. It was incredibly kind and so incredibly gracious of them

A friend had told me about staying at this beautiful classic hotel in the 1980’s. He was so impressed with its classic ambiance. I couldn’t remember its name until we got to nearby Gora and knew it was the one when I saw its golden Mt. Fuji logo which had been on one of the coffee cups he had shown me. ||It is an elegant old hotel that is filled with elegant public spaces. The dining rooms are clad in wooden carvings and coffered ceilings. The food is excellent. The service is friendly. ||I had a business matter come up and the desk staff very cheerfully and easily helped me to complete it. The reception is run efficiently and is well staffed. There was little to no waiting. ||It is an historic property and has that cinematic feeling that I like in an old hotel. The onsen is very clean and relaxing with a lovely mountain view. It’s no doubt truly amazing in late October or November when the maples change color. ||Not all rooms are alike, and you will want to choose one with plenty sunlight and a good view.

Room was clean and spacious. The hotel has very rich history and even has a museum to display them. There is a beautiful garden that you should not miss checking out. Take a nice stroll in the garden after breakfast.
