5 Best Day Trips from Tokyo | Condé Nast Traveler

"This restaurant inside the grand Fujiya Hotel serves all the classics impeccably, but the Japanese curry lunch is the thing to get. Crab, scallops, shrimp, and squid are perfectly cooked in the seafood curry for which they're known, but beef is a better match for the spicy-sweet roux-thickened sauce. They'll bring you an assortment of six pickles and condiments to add as you like. The curry (which came to Japan by way of British troops) is served in a silver gravy boat with rice on a large white plate with a fork. There is excellent local beer on offer, and service skews formal. The white-tablecloth dining room is a sight to see: Ornate carved woodwork, and hand-painted wildflowers and birds, decorate the ceiling. Dramatic windows on three sides frame the mountainside foliage." - Brandon Presser

Beautiful old world hotel in the middle of the mountains. Perfect retreat after several busy days in Tokyo . Not a lot in the surrounding area if you want to walk but taxi down to the village and there is plenty to do . The rating of this hotel depends on the purpose of your holiday . We wanted peace , rest and the onsen was fabulous to unwind and rest . Breakfast was delicious and the service was excellent. If you are looking for nightlife this is not the place for you . Relaxing gardens to wander around. I was surprised my 3 20 something kids enjoyed it so much but we are off to the busy nights ahead in Koyto now so a rest was appreciated by us all .

How on earth did this hotel get 5 stars? We stayed here at the end of an Amazing visit to Japan. All other hotels had been excellent. This hotel caters for coach trips so is prone to busy groups . It is 30 minutes drive from Lake Ashi the main area attraction. The hotel is historic with poor rooms noisy and old fashioned. Very tired decor. However the staff are the hotels biggest failing. They speak little or no English and are not very helpful at all. The hotel continually had no tables available In the restaurants. Despite seeing many empty tables. Even at breakfast we were told at least a 30 minute wait. Service is incredibly slow, we were even asked to order food at the reception 2 hrs before the meal. Then when we went to the restaurant we had to wait 45 minutes for anything to arrive. The default answer from reception is No. Can I order a Taxi? Can I get some laundry done? Can I get a dinner reservation?

The scale and scope of the hotel grounds definitely live up to its storied history, which you can read about adorned on most of the walls as you walk. So many twists and turns that bring you to different sections, I had a lot of fun exploring the different areas - interesting blend of imperial Japanese and British influences. Pool is small enough but really otherworldly, thanks in part to the surreal artwork placed in the area. Indoor hot spring was really relaxing. I didn't avail of the other spa services so I can't speak on those.|My one qualm was that the bar food was super pricey yet the quality never justified it. I understand this place was a pretty penny however we figured one night would be worth the risk and I ought to not complain about food in a five-star hotel being dear, but upwards of €20 for a club sandwich on regular white bread with chips seemed a bit odd. You'd probably get a better meal from the hot food counter in the FamilyMart down the road (this is a compliment to FamilyMart and Japanese convenience stores in general, they're all amazing). Plus, renovations on a shop nearby went on all night and made it a bit hard to sleep.

There was something special about this hotel- I felt I had stepped back in time and experienced a piece of history!|The staff were all extremely lovely and welcoming! Everyone greeted you in the hallway. This is a historic hotel that has had several additions over the years so easy to get lost! |Pros: |The lovely woman at reception upgraded our room class to a much nicer view. We were in the forest wing so it had been newly renovated. |The hotel offers a free soft drink dispenser, coffee/tea, hot drinks dispenser in the common area. |The rooms are very spacious. |Hotel provides PJs for you to wear around. (Not in the lobby/restaurant)|The onsen is very nicely set up with an outdoor and inside area along with a sauna. The dressing areas are very well equipped with amenities.|We wandered to the basement where there was a really interesting history of the hotel museum. The grounds behind the building are just stunning. |Short walk from the train station. Unfortunately the outdoor pool was closed when we were there. |So much storage and a cute “dressing” area. |Cons: The pool is wild and was probably decorated in the Roman era. You are supposed to wear a bathing cap if you use the pool. |The smoking room is too close to the common area so we could easily smell strong smoke smells when picking up our drinks. |I had read another review that mentioned this hotel gave off some vibes from “the Shining” which made me laugh but I was still charmed.

It’s an oldie. Everything is clean. Rooms are spacious but reminds you of a stay at Nanas, but don’t be dissuaded by any means. It’s more a living antique. Fresh air and hills / Mt Fuji, surrounding this old hotel is the draw. Barman at the Victoria Bar downstairs is legit. Charlie Chaplain stayed here as well as Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand. Others include Einstein, Ike, John & Yoko, Hirohito, etc. In fact at breakfast we had USA Hollywood actor & actress and a former Secretary of State. Random, but worth a stay. Wife left a shawl in room and the Management bent over backwards to ship it to us in Kyoto. Tick this box you won’t be disappointed. Konichiwa.

This is a restored Victorian hotel in Miyanoshita. It's a little old-fashioned and creaky but the rooms and beds are nice, the onsen and private garden are both superb. Western breakfast is OK, Japanese breakfast is superb but takes 90 minutes. Superbly well trained staff. Avoid the overpriced bakery and take note of the bad reviews of the main restaurant. The Japanese restaurant is again superb for evening meals but very expensive

This hotel is very impressive to the naked eye but cracks soon appear. On arrival we were advised that only one of the three inhouse restaurants had a table for two available. We were tired and decided to take it. It was the most expensive crumbed chicken, fries and salad that we've ever eaten, (pretty much a pub meal served on china plates) in a pretentious, overdone white linen and silver service restaurant where staff are not trained to standard. There were less than a dozen people dining in this huge space and by 8pm staff were eager for us to leave! So much for booked out! Breakfast was a similar experience however cost included in our booking. Our room was in the main historic building. It was dated and without any view of the surrounds. Spa a welcome and pleasant experience. External environment lovely and cable car day trips lead to an open air museum that is a wonder and gondola rides on fine days. We dined near the station on the second evening at Mori-Meshi. It was delicious. An ideallic little timber cottage serving great food and cold beer. Bookings recommended. A quick wander through the town uncovers a couple of other small restaurants that look welcoming, however hotel staff advised us that there was very little dining available outside the hotel. Not the case if you take the time to look. Overall this hotel does not deliver given it's high-end positioning and price.

Absolutely wonderful! Classic hotel with fabulous service delivery. From the front desk welcome to the restaurant service to the highly professional massage therapists. Each and every person is dedicated. Each staff person provides service with a can-do attitude and a smile. |I spent 3 nights in this hotel and found my room to be sparking clean and very well appointed. The beds were beautifully firm with excellent pillows. All bedding and towels felt new and pristine white. There are Japanese style bathrobes in the room along with Onsen pajamas and slippers. Complimentary water is in the room along with tea and coffee. There is also a "beverage room" located on the lobby level with complimentary sodas and sparking water.|Ate all breakfasts and one lunch in the Fujiya restaurant. Also had food and drinks at the bar area. Everything was served at all venues hot and oh so beautifully. |The Onsen and the swimming pool are both warm and clean and quiet and well appointed with anything you might need. I also had one of the best massages in my life at their "Zen Spa".|I truly felt relaxed and nurtured at this hotel and wouldn't hesitate to return if coming back to the area.||I truly don't understand the negative reviews I've seen on TripAdvisor. I spend about 120 days a year in hotels around the world for the past 30 years and found this hotel to be marvelous. If you require a brand new 21st century designed hotel then don't stay here. It's obvious the hotels beauty is found in its iconic historical design. History with modern comfort! I also don't understand comments concerning "English" not being spoken. Everyone I encountered, including ground keepers, spoke some degree of English. If very complicated communications are required use Google Translate. Quite frankly if you require a hotel where everyone speaks 100% perfect English, then I suggest you stick to visiting English speaking countries. ||My final comments concerning arriving here via public bus transportation. (This has nothing to do with the hotel. Just putting an FYI here for those coming in without a car.). The public bus is very crowded. In trying to return back to the Odawara train station two buses refused to allow entry with a suitcase as they were overcrowded. You might want to consider just taking the train from Odawara to the stop nearest the hotel. Alternatively, if all you want to do is use the bus, make sure and buffer a huge amount of time when departing to the train station to ensure you don't miss your train.

Yelp
This was such a beautiful place to grab some elegant French cuisine. A very picturesque backdrop at the place we sat. Lovely decor and such a friendly staff. They understood that we were short on time due to flights. We had to catch and did their very best to get us food sooner. Food was out of this world. Definitely a place to visit if you are at the Hakone area, take the gandola lift!

Yelp
This place is in no way or form 5 star hotel, very dated and ugly disgusting bathrooms and overall feels like a communist sanatorium , what a tourist trap, stay away and avoid

Yelp
This place is super charming with an amazing atmosphere of what it was like in the old days. I love how the floor boards creak, the brass rods holding the carpet runners are polished to a mirror finish, and soft waltz music piped throughout the hotel gives it that old European feel. The hotel offers a breakfast buffet and set lunch & dinner also available albeit a bit on the pricey side. Beautiful Japanese style grounds with ponds and foilage to enjoy. Make it a point to visit if in Hakone area.

Yelp
I've been here twice. Fancy hotel with onsen, beautiful garden, and a nice breakfast. Half of the hotel greatly needs a remodel tho. I stayed in nice side first time and not so nice side second time. Stains on carpets, wall paint issues, etc. I was disappointed by it because I had such beautiful memories from my first visit. They are closing next year for a complete remodel which will be good. Staff very nice and treat you like royalty.
