14 Underrated Neighborhood Gems in San Francisco

"Fuji Yama-Ya is the type of low-key neighborhood restaurant you might find in a small village in Japan. This family-owned restaurant serves up some of the most delicious and fairly priced teriyaki, tempura, and sushi in San Francisco in a cozy setting. The sweet and salty beef sukiyaki is a must try, as well as the accompanying crispy tempura. The restaurant itself is small and the wait during dinner can get long, but it’s definitely worth it." - Rob Willis

I like it here, the taste is very good. Before starting our ordered meal, they gave us a free soup that we really enjoy drinking. The avocado on top of the caterpillar roll is very fresh. We will come back again.

Google
Great rolls, great prices, beautiful interior despite small space. On my first visit, I decided to get some avocado rolls and I found this restaurant. I paid $8.60 for two avocado maki rolls, each roll being six pieces. The avocado was ripe and the rolls were a good size. If you decide to visit this restaurant, you should dine-in. This restaurant does to-go orders, but they're really dine-in oriented. On a different visit, I dined in and had the chicken donburi, California roll, and mushroom roll. The chicken donburi was filling, the California roll was wonderful, but the mushroom roll was extremely salty. My total was $21.55 before tax. This restaurant has great prices and great food, which is why I recommend checking it out.

Google
I had a pretty good time in here. We went twice while visiting and both time left happy. I thought the service was odd at times missing miso soup. Unsure if we needed to ask but other than that was good.

Google
A “hole in the wall” that serves good sized portions and good food. -Beef Teriyaki & Unagi teriyaki combo: the beef was plentiful and tender I got more than I was expecting. That’s always a plus! The unagi was a huge piece that came sizzling to the table. Melted like butter, make sure to pair with rice as there are a few bones. -Chicken Katsu: lightly battered crispy pieces of chicken. Portion size was perfect.

Google
happy to have stumbled upon this place. the rolls were good, sashimi fresh, and fried things used a beer-like batter that was more doughy / golden crispy rather than the thinner crumbly style — karaage had some tenderized meat inside instead of large chunks of thigh which was unexpected but interesting. the gomae and agedashi tofu were generous. overall, nice home-y japanese mom n pop serving a bunch of classics, humble and satisfying for a casual dinner date.

Anthony Cesnik

Google
I love this place and it's been consistently delightful over a dozen or so visits. Excellent sushi and lovely staff.

Google
The pricing is so affordable and the portion is great. The food is not amazing because it is lack of seasoning, it is more like a family japanese restaurant and the menu has good varieties. The sushi rolls is the best.

Liz Donut

Google
It was good. I got House Bento Box (Beef Teriyaki + Combo Tempura + Sashimi + Gyoza). I thought the teriyaki sauce was too goopy and thick for the thin slices of meat - like it haf too much corn starch in it. Otherwise the Tempura and Sashimi and Gyoza was good.

Yelp
Love this place for a casual weeknight dinner with good sushi and the prices are unbeatable! Their sashimi comes with salad and miso soup. The interior is cozy and they usually get pretty busy here.

Yelp
A local staple in the sunset for whenever you're craving sushi and don't want to spend lots of money. It's affordable sushi that hits the spot! It's a small and cozy place and can get crowded so get there early. We ordered the sunset roll and 49ers roll which are two of my favorites! I love the scallop and different types of fish. We also got the combo G which comes with tempura and sashimi (we got tuna for our sashimi) the tempura was very crispy! The combos also come with rice and miso soup which is a nice addition.

Yelp
Everything thing we cool about this place the size the seating the whole vibe just felt nostalgic! The food was just as good probably the best chicken katsu I ever had Service was good as well all smiles all the way thru!

Yelp
Love the ambiance, very warm and welcoming. The food is amazing especially the Beef Sukiyaki and they are also really cheap. Service is on point

Yelp
Cheap sushi and Japanese food, and it was good for what it is! You get what you pay for but it hits the spot when you just want something quick and affordable. The spicy scallop roll was good and the tempura udon was so filling I couldn't even finish it, so it was for sure worth the price.

Yelp
I've never had such poor quality sushi I am so sorry to say but it was 1/10 Why was the teriyaki sauce gooey?
google avatar

Andrea K.

Yelp
Five stars for the following reasons: 1. THE PRICES HELLO?! IN THIS ECONOMY? Probably the most reasonably priced sushi I've seen in SF. We got a sushi combo for $13 and tempura udon for less than $10. 2. Food quality was better than I expected for the price, so I was pleasantly surprised! Tempura was light and crisp, and the meal also comes with complementary miso soup. 3. Authentic homey Japanese restaurant run by Japanese people, unlike most Japanese places nearby that are run by Chinese families. 4. They close later than your usual 9:00pm restaurant closing times. My late night dinner date appreciates it 100%, but dangg let grandpa in the kitchen go to sleep earlier! I'm surprised I haven't came earlier considering I live nearby, but this is definitely my new go-to sushi spot!

Yelp
This is our neighborhood restaurant. It's a down home restaurant run By a family. The place is packed Everything I go. The prices are so Reasonable. We ordered the deluxe chirashi bowl and chicken kaarage. The chicken kaarage was cooked crispy. It had a tempura dipping sauce. I would have preferred a Mayo Sirracha sauce. I liked The rice in The chirashi bowl. Good value for the money here.

Yelp
Hadn't been here for a while, but the food is still delicious. All three of us ordered combination dinners with beef amiyaki and salmon teriyaki; it's definitely a favorite. Came with miso soup, salad, and rice. Portions are adequate for the average person, but because one person also ordered the mixed tempura and edamame for the table, I had about a third of my salmon and three quarters of my beef left, which will be great for lunch tomorrow! It came to about $95 for the three of us, not including the gratuities. Service was good, too. We were seated immediately because we arrived when they opened at 5; it can get really crowded later in the evening! Great neighborhood gem with pretty authentic Japanese food.

Yelp
Nice little spot sure to have something for anyone craving Japanese food, and at a great price! Whether it's sushi, a chicken or steak plate, or udon, they really have quite the spread. We ordered two sushi rolls, the spider roll and sunset roll, edamame, and a bento box with chicken teriyaki to share, and that was plenty of food for two of us. The food also came out pretty quickly and the servers were all nice and on top of it. Both rolls were good, though the sunset roll was my favorite as I tend to prefer to completely fresh rolls. The fish was fresh and tasted great, as did the tuna sashimi in the bento box. The sashimi was on the smaller side, but I liked that since it sort of melted in your mouth. Even though we shared the bento box they were nice enough to bring us each a bowl of miso soup, which tasted great and really hit the spot on a cool SF evening. This place was so close to 5 stars, everything was a hit aside from the teriyaki chicken. Normally I would overlook it if it wasn't that great and everything else was, but I really didn't like the teriyaki chicken at all. I had a couple pieces then stopped eating it. I'm not sure what it was but it just tasted off, it was pretty dry and maybe tasted a little burnt even. The place is pretty small and can get packed. We came on a Friday for a late dinner around 8pm, we were seated immediately, but by the time we were done a little closer to 9, there was a line out the door. Would definitely come back here, would just plan to skip the teriyaki chicken.

Yelp
Been coming here for years and finally snapped some pics . Our party of 3 came on a Friday night for dinner and luckily got seated straight away. We did notice they did have a line of one or two parties so make sure you put your name down when you arrive. We got served hot tea and a bowl of edamame upon sitting down which was great. They've changed up the menu since I've been back but we love getting the bento boxes to which you can chose three items. I opted for the salmon sashimi, saba and shrimp tempura. It comes with miso soup, rice and ice cream for dessert. So you're in for a filling meal with the bento boxes. If you get anything from the menu you NEED to try their tempura. The batter is so light and crispy, not thick or heavy at all. Think it has to be my favorite place for tempura in the city. The salmon sashimi was pretty buttery but nothing to write home about. While the hamachi was pretty solid and the standout of the two. Another highlight was the saba which was cooked perfectly, juicy tender and crispy skin. We also ordered two rolls to share, the real crab California roll and rock and roll which we found the rice to be a bit on the mushy side. For dessert we chose green tea and mango ice cream that left us stuffed!

Yelp
Hub and I came here for dinner a couple of Fridays ago. It was just before 8pm, so I was not surprised to see a full house. There was a a couple with a child waiting before us. There is not much standing space, so we waited outside until we could see that the party before us was seated. During that waiting time, I didn't see much interaction of servers at the tables, which I found interesting. In other words, I didn't see servers bringing out food to tables, but it did seem like many tables were already eating or at least finishing up. I also didn't feel they were quick to clean tables for the parties that did leave throughout our dinner. Either way, I don't feel like we waited too long to sit down. We sat at the table right in front of the register, where the servers gather. Not ideal, but we didn't think it was a big deal. We really just wanted to eat. At one point, however, we were just sitting there waiting for someone to come by between each interval (just getting menus, getting tea, taking our order, etc). When the miso soup came out, I admit the flavor of what could be a very basic item made up for the long intervals. It's been a while since I've had flavorful miso soup. We ordered some sushi rolls and a bento box (chicken teriyaki and tempura). The food was good. The servers were friendly when we did have some interaction, but I admit the lack of service might not be enough to come back. Disclaimer: this does include the fact that the restaurant was emptying out as the evening went on.

Yelp
Our friends invited us for dinner at their favorite neighborhood go-to Japanese restaurant, Fujiyama-Ya. Arriving for our 5:00pm dinner on a recent Saturday, we found a parking space around the corner on 20th Ave. We were seated at the second booth towards the back. Checking out the menu, you can get your sushi and rolls, udons, as well as cooked items and entrée combinations. To start, our hosts ordered the deep fried oysters and potstickers. The medium sized oysters were coated in panko and were golden brown and crispy. The pork potstickers were good sized. Tasty. My friend regular dish is the beef amiyaki and he was ordering it again this evening. He recommended it, so I decided to give it a try and ordered it as a combo with sashimi. Ordered medium rare, the beef amiyaki, which is a marinated rib eye steak. It was tender and juicy. Very good steak. It must be a popular item here since I saw five other people ordering it. Overall, service was friendly and efficient. Restaurant is quaint with booths on one side and table on the other. There were Japanese watercolor paintings on both sides. The décor reminded me of a restaurant in Japantown. A non-nonsense neighborhood restaurant with good sushi and entrée items.

Yelp
Love the tempura and sukiyaki here. They have a great deal on combo meals. Super peaceful spot to get some solid Japanese food. Friendliest owners and highly recommend!

Yelp
A nice place to satisfy your sushi cravings! Came on a weekday for dinner and we were seated right away. Items ordered: - Entree Combo A with beef teriyaki and chicken teriyaki: The texture for both meats was good and came with a good amount of sauce. There could be a but more flavor though but overall it was great for the amount of meat you get. - Caterpillar roll: A safe choice when it comes to rolls and satisfied my sushi craving. - Rock and Roll: Unagi and Avocado roll which you can't go wrong with! - Sashimi Combo: Pretty decent, but nothing that stuck out as amazing. It came with 4 types of sushi, 5 pieces each. I probably wouldn't order this again the next time I come, but I would try other things on the menu.

Yelp
So glad I found this cute restaurant. It has a very small and cozy interior and very friendly service. This is a mom & pop kind of restaurant so don't expect hasty service. This is definitely the kind of place you go to take your time, catch up and talk with friends while eating delicious food! My friend is vegan and she ordered the vegetable udon as well as an assortment of veggie maki. She said her vegetable udon broth was a little light in flavoring but otherwise delicious. She said the udon was cooked perfectly and she very much enjoyed snacking on the vegetable maki. I ordered the sukiyaki & sashimi combo. The sashimi was so rich and fatty. Absolutely scrumptious! My friend and I both want to come back soon! Also, our waitress was an older lady, maybe the owner, such sweet and kind service!! She's the main reason we'd return to this restaurant :) definitely come check them out!

Yelp
It was a quite a wait for a Sunday night at 9 PM. But we had time. The sukiyaki was sweet with a balanced amount of protein and veggies. It was still great the next day as leftovers. The beef amiyaki was very tender and more thin compared to an American steak. It was cooked well done, which is not how I eat my steaks, but still great nonetheless. The tempura was very good, but our favorite side dish was the unagi nigiri. I'm looking forward to trying out the rest of their menu to update this review.

Yelp
This is a really solid neighborhood spot - we came out here from SoMa but it definitely didn't disappoint! We came here for a late dinner on a Saturday night, but it was cold and rainy outside so there weren't a ton of people at the restaurant, but as the night went on we saw a lot of regulars come in for dine in / take out. Based on some Yelp reviews we decided to stick with the cooked food sections of the menu and shared family style (for 2): Combo E: Beef Sukiyaki + Tempura - this came with a giant vat of rice (which we happily packed the leftovers to go). Solid beef sukiyaki loaded with vegetables, beef, tofu, and glass noodles, and would've been a great meal on its on. The tempura though...I'm typically not a big fan of tempura but the batter was light and fluffy, absolutely delicious1 Chicken Karaage - bite-sized, smaller than what I've come to expect. Decent but nothing to write home about... Agedashi Tofu - quite decent Edamame - I have never met an edamame dish in my life that has tasted any different than all the ones that came before it Seaweed Salad - probably the only thing on the menu I'd skip next time, this was a bit soggy. We overordered so maybe pace yourself...but would definitely be happy to come back if in the area again! Prices were also insanely reasonable by San Francisco standards.

Yelp
Found this place today because I was looking for a local cheap restaurant after school. I ordered the Sukiyaki set which came with Tempura, miso soup, rice, and salad... for only $17! The prices here are insanely cheap for San Francisco and the food was pretty good. However I did notice some uncooked batter in the tempura. Overall the service was friendly, food was good, and prices are incomparable.

Yelp
Updating my review, the service has been far far better over the many years I've been coming here. The staff has warmed up to my family, friends, and myself to the point where they recognize me/us as regulars. As they are a family owned business, I appreciate their friendliness and hard work. The amiyaki is as good as it was when I first posted my original review, but the price has raised about 25%. Still worth the cost but not exactly a deal either. You get what you pay for. Our new favorites are Combo A (beef and chicken teriyaki), Combo J (salmon and sashimi) and the tempura and chicken karaage dish. The salmon and chicken were our favorites! All entree combos come with miso soup and salad. Overall, I'd recommend Fuji much more than a decade ago, although it does tend to get quite crowded around 7pm (and there's nowhere to wait if you've put your name on the waitlist).

Yelp
It seems to be like a Sunset institution--I remember coming here in the early 90s when it first opened and it's been ages since I've eaten here. Not sure if there's been any change in ownership. It was crowded when we got there for a mid-week evening dinner; the tables were all occupied. The wait was brief--under 10 minutes--worth the wait. The prices are reasonable--you can order a 2 item combo for about $16-$18 & it comes with a salad and miso soup. They have preset selections or you can make your own combo. We ordered teriyaki salmon entree, sukiyaki & tempura combo, tuna roll and California roll, chicken teriyaki & tempura combo. The combos are generous portions. My only complaint was the service, while they were good taking our orders, it took a long time before the orders for our table were completed. Some came sooner than others or only half of the combo was served while waiting for the other half. Overall, the food is still good after all these years. I definitely recommend coming to this neighborhood restaurant.

Yelp
My family loves coming here! Their portions and pricing is great and well worth the money but it also depends on what you order. I do not recommend their sushi but there is plenty of other dishes that I highly DO recommend. Their chicken karaage has really good flavor and is nice and crunchy! Some other dishes that I highly recommend is their tempura(nice and crunchy and not oily), sukiyaki, beef amiyaki, salmon teriyaki, and the best part is that all of these dishes are either all or can be combined together with their combos! We usually do pick up and the wait time for pick up is about 30mins and so far our orders have all been spot on!!!
google avatar

Jack R.

Yelp
Beef was just okay and their rolls are just okay. We saw the line and thought this place would be awesome, but sadly, it's just average. Before Covid it's about an hour wait which is ridiculous. The service was slow and their bento box is again average. Don't believe the hype with the long lines here.

J T.

Yelp
I decided to write a review because this has been my go to spot! Love this place for the price and the food. I love the combination plates and especially their tempura. It is always fried perfectly golden and crispy. They have been here for years and they have a lot of regulars coming back. This place is comfortable warm and it's just comfort food okay. It's the best! I've read a couple of the reviews and I don't know where and how people are saying it's run by Japanese people... I hear the owners speaking in Chinese so I have no idea where Japanese came from. The other night I came here and overheard the lady owner telling a regular that it will be new ownership. Despite change of ownership I hope everything will continue to be the same.

Yelp
Best sushi in the sunset imo. Fresh fish and reasonable prices. Their spicy tuna roll is packed with tuna and sauce- no cucumbers. Only wish they were open for lunch!
google avatar

Yelp
Really sweet small place, seemed to be thoughtfully run. Totally reasonably priced. I'm not usually in that neighborhood but if I am again, I will definitely go back.

Yelp
Worst place for sushi or sashimi. Given this place is owned by real Japanese (I heard), their raw food is terrible. Cooked food is alright. We ordered: -16 pieces sashimi, all the fish had no taste. There were no freshness to it, the colors are dull, I suspect it's been sitting around for a long time. -dragon and caterpillar rolls, both were ok, the fish on top were thin and too much rice. -Uni is the worst, tasted foul and I had a stomach ache after. Costed $7 each piece (so not worth it!!!) -Cooked food were tofu ( they used the firm cheap tofu, texture wasn't good), beef sukiyaki ( way too sweet) combo tempura ( probably the only dish I liked that night). Over all, 2 out 10. Will not return or recommend to others.
google avatar

Emily W.

Yelp
Fujiyama is a cozy family owned restaurant. We came here on a Sunday night and the restaurant was pretty full. While I've definitely had better rolls and nigiris, the value cannot be beat (less than $15 for rolls and sushi combos). My friend and I each got a sushi combo A and split a 49ers roll.

Horseman B.

Yelp
What an awesome weekday evening treat in the form of authentic and delicious Japanese cuisine. I had some of the sushi as appetizers, and tempura with beef teriyaki as the main course. What is up with the 4 Star rating? 6:00 in the evening and already a small line was forming. I'd give this place a '10' if Yelp would so allow. Stop going to fake Japanese restaurants owned by non-Japanese folks. This place is off the charts good and the staff is friendly and top notch! I'll be bringing plenty of guests to this establishment.
google avatar

Benjamin Z.

Yelp
Food is ight, nothing special but it's a good price especially in the city. I got the entree combo, it isn't big portions but quality was fine. The sushi is nothing special. The atmosphere is laid back and chill. Good crowds, not too loud but loud enough for a conversation with a group of people. However, I gave it a three stars because the service is absolutely garbagio. It takes forever for any server to get you anything. Food comes out fine but god the servers suck cheeks. Not friendly at all, one is literally wearing an EarPod listening to music while serving you and still wondering why you have to repeat your request to her. I contemplate if I want to come back. I feel if you are a GUI LAO you get better service though for what I can see. They are pretty attentive if you are one so take advantage of that! Overall, good price, mid food, horrid service!
google avatar

Yelp
Service was good. Their menu has a solid spread of options. Prices are definitely very reasonable for sf. Not necessarily the best Japanese food I've had but it felt like comfort food and I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Good local dive. Price seems very reason and the food is delicious. Friendly servers. This place could get crowded and the waiting period is usually around 15 minutes during main dining times. Family friendly atmosphere.

Yelp
Long wait worth waiting for. I couldn't wait to go back since the pandemic. This place has been around for a while and consistency has been key. The reasonable and affordable dishes are downright delicious. They don't skimp with their portions. My cravings were more than satisfied.

Yelp
My husband has been going to this restaurant since he was a kid so this has always been a special place. Fujiyama-Ya is a small Japanese restaurant in the Sunset that serves a variety of authentic dishes. You really can't beat the quality of service and value you find here. The same family has been running this place for over 30 years. More often than not, there is a wait to eat here. I recommend getting here as soon as they open. If you see a line, be sure to go inside and write your name on the white board. They call people in order, based on seating size availability. I've tried many things here over the years. Their combos are really the best value. You can get a lot of food and the prices are amazing. My favorite combo to get is the Sukiyaki with Sashimi. The Sashimi default is tuna, but I usually ask to change mine to hamachi. The combos come with miso soup, salad and rice. I almost always have leftovers. Be sure to get hot tea to go with your meal!

Yelp
My family and I have been looking for our next go to Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood since the one we usually go to the food quality went down and sad to say this place is a no for us. We got seated but waited an additionalb5 minutes after to order since they were taking walk in orders before they finally got to us. Had ordered our food, chirashi, tempura udon, seafood udon (sorry no picture), ahi poke and soft shelled crab. Portion for the soft shelled crab was a bit disappointing. Only one crab as an appetizer. The ahi poke was also in smaller portion and it DIDN'T taste right. It tasted it was a day old and the flavor was plain. The tempura udon was okay, the soup was bland so I had to add soy sauce for flavor. The tempura sauce was sweet compared to other sauces I've had. The tempura itself wasn't in my opinion fully cooked since it was a little doughy still. The chirashi had only 4 types of fish and the the rice wasn't flavored nor was there enough. It seemed liked they just did a scoop and a half and flattened it against the bottom of the bowl. All in all, tried this place once, won't be going back.

Erica K.

Yelp
If I could order dinner from here every night, I would! The dinner combos are just that good and affordable, however I would caution anyone and everyone that the quality of food can be a hit or miss dependent on supply chain issues and how busy they are. When ordering takeout, the default for sashimi in their dinner combo is Tuna and there have been times when the cuts of sashimi have looked less appealing. But, the salad with its unique dressing, crispiness of tempura, and warmth of the sukiyaki have made up for these small nuances.

Scott F.

Yelp
I brought my 89 year old mom here for dinner. She's an old school Japanese American and she thoroughly enjoyed the food. She lives in the Sunset and I wanted to take her to someplace close and where the food was familiar. This place, hit the spot. Food was good, portions are generous, and prices are reasonable and very affordable. The tonkatsu was nicely cooked, with the breading crispy and not soggy with oil. There were 2 nicely sized pork cutlets. Which is generous in comparison to what most restaurants serve. We also had 3 orders of sushi. The rice was just right, not smashed together from rolling too tightly or cooked with too much water; or the opposite where it's too loosely formed or made with too little water. Cuts of fish were fresh and firm. It's a solid small local family style restaurant. If I lived in the neighborhood, this would be my go to restaurant when I'm not wanting to cook. The service was kind, patient and efficient. Atmosphere was comfortable and good place for a casual family dinner. Count me in for coming back with my kids and spouse.

Mary P.

Yelp
The staff are friendly, the food tasted fresh and was flavorful, The fries and tempura where amazing starters , and all the rolls where good. I do wish they had more protein in them, but besides being a little unbalanced in my opinion, I thought they where flavorful!

Yelp
I am so sad that I didn't discover Fujiyama-Ya sooner...I was so impressed with the quantity and quality of food, especially at their price point. I tried calling in on a Friday night and kept getting a busy signal...shows you how many other people are also ordering from them! I was able to finally get through on Saturday night, which is when I placed an order for two different combos. I'm not huge on seafood, so I got the beef sukiyaki with vegetable tempura. Both dishes were immensely satisfying and tasty. With the salad that comes with the combos, I was actually able to make my meal stretch to two! My boyfriend got the unagi and sashimi and thoroughly enjoyed both dishes as well. He kept commenting on the fact that he was able to get two items for the price that he normally pays for just an unagi bowl at a Japanese grocery store. What a steal! Will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
it's a hole in the wall japanese restaurant. lots of locals come here for the no-nonsense food. the restaurant is in need of an update but that's really the least of your worries. always busy on the first hour. esther has been our server since my first daughter has been 4yo. love the beef sukiyaki, agadeshi tofu, tempura, unagi. sushi rolls have been getting smaller and sometimes the nigiri are a hit or miss. i come now for the hot meals instead of the raw fish. always a treat still to come to this restaurant, our favorite still even after moving out of SF.

Yelp
Very good food with rising prices. I heard there's new owners so I suspect prices will go up even more. Open 6 days a week for dinner only. Get there early or you will wait. Esther is great.

Yelp
Sorry but we won't be coming back. They told us our order was going to be ready in 25 minutes, we go there and still waited inside for about 30 minutes and they got our order wrong. Took about another 10 minutes before we finally got everything. They really won't acknowledge you standing there unless you say something. The rolls are decent, but the sashimi pieces were tiny.

Yelp
The ambience was nice and cozy and the server, Esther, was fantastic and really accommodating, she was really Great! The problem was the quality of the food. The sushi was almost tasteless, that is, it was difficult to distinguish the hamachi from the tuna because the sushi was bland. The teriyaki sauce and the coating for fried goods was a bit rubbery and congealed. And I read something in an earlier review complaining about the rice in the sushi, I think I solved the mystery! It's because the sushi at Fujiyama's is not made with the usual rice that other sushi restaurants use nor is Fujiyama's sushi rice mixed with anything like rice vinegar, etc. It's Just plain rice - the first time we've encountered this. Our opinion is that this restaurant is very cute with a fantastic waitress. However, the food needs to be upgraded to match these positive points. I think that the clientele will pony up the extra money if the food is better. But again, maybe that's why many people like this place because the sushi is cheaper than at most other restaurants.

Yelp
My next go-to sushi place on my list, aside from Ichika Sushi in Brisbane. The one thing that can be tricky is that Fujiyama-Ya isn't open for lunch hours, but the restaurant makes a great place for dinner. The establishment is cozy, and seating can be difficult to find during peak business hours. However, of all the times I've come here with my friends, we've had to wait only for a couple of minutes (if not at all) for a table. What I love most about Fujiyama-Ya is that I can get higher-quality sushi at a relatively affordable price. A California roll made with real crab (my favorite sushi item to order at any Japanese restaurant) only runs me about $5-6, compared to $9-11 at other places. The sashimi here also tastes pretty fresh. I've yet to have issues with food poisoning *knock on wood.* In addition, their cooked dishes are also delicious. In particular, I've tried their yosenabe and thought it was really filling and hearty. Good comfort dish, especially when that San Francisco chill hits. Overall, I couldn't recommend Fujiyama-Ya enough. Just be mindful of the wait, depending on when you arrive.

Yelp
We both came here for dinner it was about a 20 minute wait. It was a very small and cozy place for sure. We both ordered a beef teriyaki bento, but the beef was extremely thin and the sauce was alright very syrupy and not really saucey. I loved the salad with the dressing. The dressing was refreshing. The tempura was good and crispy good and it was a wide selection of things shrimps and vegetables. The philadelphia roll was amazing. The avocado in it complemented it really well. I eat a lot of philadelphia rolls since it's one of my faves. But definitely won't go back just for just a roll. The tofu appetizer was okay. Definitely not a good tofu selection they picked for the appetizer I would have preferred a soft tofu in stead of firm. The service was good the people were nice. But overall I would give this place 3.5 stars.

Yelp
Walked in on Christmas Eve night at around 6pm. The place is full, but it's a very small space so that's not a surprise. I was seated in the corner near the front door with my family (6 people) and we were cramped. This isn't usually an issue for me, but the place was dirty. The plates were sticky, dust covered the walls, and it made me very uncomfortable. It took forever to place our order, but it was busy and Christmas Eve so that's fine, but their combo meals are just so confusing?? It says you can create your own combo meal set, but maki sushi rolls aren't included. The food portion is also sooo small. I wasn't even full after my meal. Also, my family ordered a bunch of combo meals and the rice came in one container?? It didn't feel like we had our own meal. The food was probably 3/5, but I can't give them anything higher than 1 star because I was really disturbed with how everything was sticky and dusty.

Yelp
My favorite home style Japanese restaurant of all time. Esther is the sweetest, and although she seems busy running around, she handles each interaction efficiently & with a warm heart. Her gentle demeanor and the forever constant ambiance of the restaurant creates a quiet yet lively environment to bring a date or to enjoy with a group of friends. I'll admit to quite a few solo dinners here with my AirPods and a podcast, and I honestly cannot remember a happier time. The food here warms the belly, the soul, and the heart. My go to's: - sashimi / tempura combo - sukiyaki / unagi combo - rock n roll **Have been coming here since I was a kid and there's an obvious nostalgic bias to the review.

Yelp
I love this restaurant . The staff is so warm and kind. I have been going here for years , and their food is always consistently good. I especially like their tonkatsu , sukiyaki and tempura .

Yelp
What regulars want to know regarding the change of ownership sign. There will be new owners. Esther is staying on. The food will be the same. I don't know about pricing plans. My usual is beef sukiyaki/salmon sashimi combo. I always notice that the tempura is very popular so I ordered that instead of sashimi. Maybe the most oily version I've ever had.

Yelp
What's not to love about Fujiyama -- good tasting food, and a crazy good price! If you are looking for a meal that won't break the bank, and where your money will go a long way, order from Fujiyama! A friend of mine recently moved into the neighborhood and after a day at the beach, we were all craving sushi. I had never heard of this spot, so of course I hopped on Yelp, to get the low down from the community. I had to rub my eyes together because I was like is this menu from 2005, why are the prices so low? lol But nope, the prices were really that affordable. I ended up getting the bento combo for $16.95 which came with sashimi, order of assorted tempura, beer teriyaki, rice, salad and miso soup. We also added some rolls to the mix. For takeout, the tempura held up pretty well and tasted pretty good. The sashimi tasted fresh, and the beef teriyaki was passable. Most of the rolls here will be under $12 and for SF that's a crazy good deal. The escolar was awesome, and the salad & miso soup were middle of the road. Calling ahead is definitely recommended and making sure you go-over your order is important. At pickup there was a sligh mixup, but they were able to make good and get the order right. Good customer service and if I'm in the area again, and I'm trying to not break the bank, best believe I'll be back.
