Tucked away amid the maze of small Bairro Alto streets, this restaurant is a very nice discovery. We just happened to walk by when it was closed, but were intrigued by the menu on the door. The word ''fumeiro'' meaning ''smoke'' gives a good hint at what's inside: everything served is some kind of smoked food. We liked the idea of several smallish portions--bigger than usual tapas in our experience, but small enough that you'll want to try 3 or 4 items on the menu. We had a crab and fennel soup that was only OK, a smoked octopus dish that was brilliant, very good smoked salmon, and fantastic smoked ribs. All were elegantly served with creative preparation. The service was good (and of course, everyone speaks English), and the ambience a bit hip and edgy, with Old School soul music on tape. We were the only people there at 7:30, but by the time we left, more people had arrived. The place doesn't open until 7, stays open late (12:30?), and in the summer months has a Sunday brunch starting at 1 p.m. We liked it!
