Shikoku Island Is Hiding Some of Japan's Best Hot Springs

"This centrally located spa in Ehime Prefecture features multiple onsens, a Zen garden, and a sauna. Traditional Japanese rooms with futon beds and tatami mats are available, as well as Western-style rooms. The onsen is conveniently located near the Dogo-Onsen Train Station." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Dogo Onsen Funaya is the historic landmark at Dogo Onsen area. I was very excited to stay but it looks that my expectation was too high. Japanese style room was very ordinary Japanese Ryokan room. Nothing special. Door was not autolocked. Meals were not as good as those of other hotels in Dogo Onsen area. Services were also not as good as those of other hotels there. I was a bit disappointed but at least I could stay at the most famous hote in the area.

Definitely come back. Wonderful ryokan. The service was really lovely and personal. The room was just perfect with our own onsen (hot spring) in our own room whenever we wanted. It was right in front of a train station, so it’s a very convenient spot.

Lovely ryokan with excellent service and our traditional Japanese room was clean and had lots of space. Very warm and relaxing onsen and the restaurant had a tasty and exciting dinner menu.

Loved the hotel, the onsite onsen bath, the Japanese garden, friendly staff, all top-notch! The website was not easy to navigate even translated to English, so we had a hard time deciding what package to book. I have no idea how we did this (we couldn't tell from the booking at all), but we booked the Royal Suite with about 8 rooms, half Japanese style and half Western style plus a private bath in the suite fed by the natural spring waters in Dogo Onsen!!! We had breakfast and dinner served by Kadoya, our friendly attendant. We opted to have futons set out for us each night in the tatami rooms rather than use the western beds. There was another option to have dinner at these beautiful free-standing tatami rooms next to the river in the garden - we would have liked to do that one night in addition to having dinner in our room a different night, but could not figure out how to do that on the website and it didn't seem to be an option. Compared to our other hotels this really was the Royal treatment. Such a wonderful location and beautiful spot. If the Royal Suite sounds like what you're looking for, it was Room 801! 素晴らしかったです、ありがとうございました!

I stayed for four days in April 2025. It is ideally located for sightseeing within Ehime Prefecture, including the famous Dogo Onsen. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and many of the staff spoke English—they were also kind and helpful, which made for a pleasant stay. The food was delicious, and I would highly recommend opting for a stay that includes meals.

It is expensive, but it’s worth every single dollar. The hotel located right in the centre of Dogo Onsen. The room is spacious and the view of the city is excellent. The included dinner and breakfast at top notch with excellent service. The service is impeccable!

Location is a short walk from Dogo onsen station. The experience was amazing, rooms were huge and I was surprised to have a staff member show us around the room and explain the amenities available. The amount of hospitality is above and beyond any we've experienced at other places and ryokans. They also have a very beautiful outdoor garden, onsen and geta (traditional Japanese wooden shoes) and yukata to wear around the premises.
