The Best Affordable Hotels in Europe, According to Travel Experts

"These minimalist cedar bungalows are set on 200 acres of São Miguel Island, with gardens and forest trails that immerse you in the natural world. But the real treat is having husband-and-wife hosts Manuel and Helena Gago da Camara introduce you to the Azores’ cuisine. Each morning a breakfast basket of bolo lêvedo, the local sweet bread, and honey from the property’s bees was delivered to my door. In the evening, I joined the couple for a traditional dinner of cozida, a meat stew cooked in a pot in the ground that’s heated by volcanic steam. Doubles from $205." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Furnas Lake Forest Living is the perfect place to stay when you visit Sao Miguel—especially for travelers seeking a good balance of comfort and independence.||First, the location is absolutely to die for—convenience-wise, it’s right across from the lake and from Mata Jardim Jose do Canto, and a very short drive from the town of Furnas proper. Beauty-wise, you feel like you are being embraced by the forest when you stay here. The grounds are just so lovely and peaceful, even on the Azores’ more foggy days.||Second, the room I stayed in (Oak studio) was excellent. It even had a little kitchen, which I was not expecting and was a very welcome bonus. It feels more like staying in a small apartment than a hotel room—even though the extremely lovely and helpful staff are just around the corner and happy to bring you anything you need. For example, I always find the mattresses abroad to be hard and tough on my back, and the staff made up my bed with an extra mattress topper and blankets to increase the softness :)||Third, the food is incredible. The dinner was the best meal I had the whole time I was on the island, and the breakfasts offer a ton of variety. I would love a recipe for that banana jam! ||There were so many nice touches—like the little arrangements of greenery and flowers pruned from their grounds that they put in the rooms and all over the property, or the jars of green tea and butter cookies left in your room when you check in. ||After my stay at Furnas Lake, I spent two nights at Octant Furnas—a larger, “fancier” hotel with more amenities—and I honestly did not enjoy it half as much. The more resort-y vibe of Octant simply didn’t mesh nearly as well with the feeling of the Azores and of the island. ||Sao Miguel is a unique destination that requires a unique hotel. Furnas Lake’s eco-conscious focus, coupled with its exceptional hospitality, is the answer. I really felt like a special guest on someone’s beautiful estate, and in fact almost like an old friend. I hope to be back someday!

This place is in a beautiful location close to Furnas lake. We stayed in a cedar villa as a family of 2 adults and 2 kids. ||The villa is clean and comfortable. It has 1 bedroom, and a pull out bed in the living room. The living room unfortunately doesn’t have curtains, so it meant our kids woke up as soon as it was light outside. I did ask at reception about curtains or blinds, but they explained that it’s a living area and not a sleeping area. Just be aware of this - it’s great for couples, perhaps less suited for families.||The breakfasts were delicious, not a buffet but they made as much of everything as we wanted and had a good selection of hot and cold fresh, local options including pastries/cakes baked onsite which were amazing. Their home made granola was also amazing!||Tea and coffee were provided in the room, but not milk - take your own if you like milk with your tea/coffee. I did ask at reception about this too, and they explained that because the room comes with a kitchenette, they don’t provide milk. But they were happy to give us a small jug from the restaurant which gave us time to get our own later. ||The main reason why I haven’t given more stars is due to the price. I booked quite far in advance which was probably a mistake - I paid over €400 per night which is at least 20% more than I paid for any of the other places we stayed in Sao Miguel, which were just as good as (or better than) this one. Sao Miguel has some amazing options! ||If you can get a fair price, then this is a great option in a beautiful spot for couples.

We had an amazing experience at Furnas Lake Forest Living. The accommodation is simply dreamy – nestled in the forest and just steps away from the volcanic Furnas Lake. The cabins are very spacious, extremely comfortable, and beautifully designed, offering everything you need for a peaceful getaway in nature. The staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and always ready to help with anything we needed. A real highlight was the dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, which was truly top-notch – delicious dishes, beautifully presented, and made with high-quality local ingredients. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone looking for relaxation, comfort, and an authentic connection with nature.

Don’t think twice, just book immediately! Remarkably beautiful, peaceful property. Cozy, immaculately clean villas with the right amenities + some. The most amazing restaurant right there, with much of the food sourced from their garden - the breakfast buffet was delicious and well-stocked, the dinner was absolutely incredible and memorable - we had cocktails and the coursed menu. We haven’t stopped talking about the dinners here! Super friendly and helpful staff. Very accommodating to us as non-speakers of Portuguese. Carmen, Teresa, and Mariana were all amazing. (Didn’t catch everyone’s name, but they all were!) Housekeeping staff kindly restocked everything each day which made our trip so simple and easy. We had an incredible honeymoon here and can’t recommend enough!!

Came here on our honeymoon and were given the warmest welcome. The setting was beautiful and serene. We liked wandering through the gardens before dinner at the excellent on site restaurant. There is a large park right next to the hotel and I liked going for a run around the lake in the mornings. Everything was so great, we chose to extend our stay by another night!

We had the warmest welcome from staff on our honeymoon here, so much we extended our stay by a night. Highly recommend getting breakfast and dinner at the restaurant here, at least once, during your stay. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Supplied well enough that we were able to cook a simple dinner one night. Staff were very helpful making reservations.

Unfortunately in our bathroom we had a somewhat unpleasant smell. We signaled the problem to the reception, yet nobody had the time to take a look at it during our 2 night stay because in a strike of bad luck, the main water pipe of the whole site first had a leakage and later broke down completely. Sure thing, this was not necessarily their fault, but neither was it the guests' fault. Reason enough to indirectly ask for some sort of compensation during check-out. A message that maybe wasn't articulated clearly enough. A week later we got an email asking for a review online. I wrote an email addressing the problems we encountered. The answer we received wasn't very satisfying. We had been offered one additional night - outside the main season... We surely won't get back for such a one night stay because it would cost us several times the amount of money to even get there. Sorry but this can't be taken seriously. You could have offered a 10% cashback or so and would have easily gotten a 5 star review for good service. But you chose not to.

This is the best restaurant in the Azores, easily. If you want to endeavour into a gastronomic refuge complete with their own farms on site and the rich smell of cedar aromas as you enter the dining labratory… be present and prepared for a 6 course menu that will literally drop your jaw. Expertly crafted and beautiful service. Just wow!
