Discovering Oita, the hidden gem of Kyushu island in Japan - SilverKris

"An ancient Buddhist temple founded around 1,300 years ago on the Kunisaki Peninsula, set within lush forests and serving as a popular pilgrimage site; its tranquil, meditative surroundings attract visitors seeking quiet reflection and forest-bathing (shinrin-yoku)." - James P. Ong

Beautiful site spreaded across the hill with multiple complexes which exemplifies Manzan culture at its peak - the origin of the syncretism of Buddhism and Shinto. Impressive cliff structure and architecture with a rich religious and historical backdrop. Perfect atmosphere for deep thought, introspection and meditation.

The climb is magnificent. The weather wrecked havoc on the slope but it's still walkable, bring good shoes.

Beautiful and very unique aspects. Unfortunately the purified water to enter the shrine is unavailable due to covid. But if you wish to pray for health for you and your family, this temple will receive your prays. If you come during the fall season, there is a tough 2 hour hike to the peak and back where you can see a beautiful view of the changing leaves. There are two incredible bridges (one is a natural stone bridge) and the Nioh Guardians are a sight to see. Take your time taking in everything this temple has to offer.

A must visit if you are around Kunisaki. Futago-ji is a congregation of small shrines, temples and numerous sacred artifacts in deep mountains. I visited there in May when leaves were shining with vivid yet subtle light green. Surrounded by deep forests and the serene and profound atmosphere, I literally felt I was spirited away. It was surreal.

This place is magical. It’s like walking straight into a Ghibli movie. It’s unforgettable. I went in the late Spring so everything was a mossy, vibrant light green. I’m sure it would be beautiful in any season. Must go.

Very scenery and quiet location hidden in the mountains of the Kunisaki Peninsula, about 1 hour drive from Beppu. Worth a trip if you spend several days in the area. You can get there only by car, there's plenty of parking spots as it's not a crowded touristic location.
