"Local Brew and Traditional Austrian Dishes at the Historic Gablerbräu Across the river from the heart of the old town, the historic Gablerbräu dates back to 1429 and offers the usual mix of Austrian favorites, including schnitzel, Tafelspitz , and goulash, plus seasonal apricot dumplings and the local Salzburger Nockerl pastry. The local draft beer, Gabler Zwickl, is a good choice, but it's the atmosphere that really makes this place worth a visit. While the chance to dine outdoors on a cool summer evening in Salzburg is hard to pass up, the classic decor inside should not be missed. Ask for a spot in the Richard-Mayr-Stube, a cozy dining area with murals, vaulted ceilings, stained-glass windows, and a charming old tile stove."

Great food and friendly service. The dining rooms are large, bright, clean, and welcoming. The outside patio is roomy and you don’t feel like you sitting on top of other people. All of the tables are large with plenty of room for multiple dishes and drinks. Our waiter walked us through the menu and explained the various offerings and options, then gave us plenty of time to decide what we wanted. Chicken schnitzel was very crispy and tasty. The berry saucy served with it was delicious. Wiener schnitzel was also very good. The house beer is light, crisp and refreshing. We went back a few days later, and the waiter remembered that we had been there. A very unexpected and nice touch. Highly recommended!

We really loved this place! The service and staff were top-notch — friendly, welcoming, and attentive. They helped us choose dishes, and everything was served incredibly fast. The food was absolutely delicious. We'll definitely be coming back!

Had an amazing experience at Gablerbräu! The venison dish (Wilderertopf) and garlic soup (Knoblauchsuppe) from the menu were absolutely delicious and left a great impression on my palate. Both dishes beautifully reflected authentic local flavors, and I definitely recommend trying them. The atmosphere of the place was very cozy and comfortable. The staff were extremely attentive, warm, and friendly, which made our meal even more enjoyable. If you're looking for a traditional and quality dining experience in Salzburg, Gablerbräu is definitely a fantastic choice!

This was a transformational experience on a spiritual and physical level. The chicken made my feet tingle to the point where I rose off of the ground the table begun shaking, and when I heard the bottle of water pop like wine, I knew I was in the right Place. As an appetizer, we had some stupendous spicy tomato soup. One of the best tomato soups I have had in my 18 year life. The waiters were polite and always quick with refilling water. I arrived in a group of 38 and the rounds of food were timely and efficient. The main was Schnitzel with potatoes and a lemon on the side. For dessert, we had three very good size scoops of ice cream with three different flavors leading to a feeling of fulfillment at the end of the meal that I’ve never felt before. If you are ever in Saltzberg or anywhere near Saltzberg, I recommend making the drive to this place. Despite the reviews, this has been one of the greatest eating experiences I have ever had. The immersion, the taste, and the music create sensations that run through my body. Thank you And good night.

Enjoyed the spinach dumplings, a great vegetarian option. The Grüner Veltliner wine was a nice match. The beer garden with fountains is relaxing, though it gets crowded. Service was friendly and helpful.

Google
The pork roast was succulent, with a rich, flavorful gravy and tender dumplings. The Gabler Zwickl beer was light and invigorating, a splendid match. The beer garden’s serene fountains created a peaceful setting, and the staff was wonderfully attentive.

Thanks for welcoming us, our first night in Salzburg and had such a nice exprience. We were late kitchen was closed and boys welcomed us with a smile. Food was very good. Never had this kind of positive time in last years! Thank you very much

Google
The fried mushrooms were a sensational starter, perfectly crispy with a tangy herb sauce. The Grüner Veltliner wine was bright and refreshing. The beer garden offered a stunning view of the fortress, and the service was warm and professional.

Yelp
Worst Wiener Schnitzel I've ever had. Soggy breading, tough veal and to top it off a portion half the size I get in Vienna or Berlin. Bread & Spreads was ok but nothing special. Beer is so so. Just not worth coming here.

Yelp
We had the lasagna and the salmon pasta. We both found our pasta to be cooked perfectly. We both thought our dishes to be delicious. It was served quickly for the area and the waiter was efficient and pleasant. The bread and spreads appetizer could be skipped. We were seated in the old part of the restaurant which was absolutely gorgeous.

Yelp
Solid Austrian traditional fare, cheerful and efficient service, great atmosphere and decor, reasonable prices, and convenient location for this side of the river -- worth a visit, and many revisits.

Yelp
Our first stop in Salzburg, and one that really set the tone for food, beer and service. We got into Salzburg early on a Monday morning, and after walking from the train station to the hotel, we realized we were famished, and set out to find somewhere warm to sit with something good to eat. And drink, of course. Gablerbräu wasn't technically open when we stopped in (about five minutes before their official open time), but the awesome waiter at the door invited us in from the cold, and told us to grab a table at the dining room in the back. Once settled, he came back to our table to offer menus and get our beer orders. I went with a Gösser Märzen, and my husband ordered their Hausbier. After a bit of menu perusing, we both decided to go for their Schnitzel. The scents coming from the kitchen as we sat there, sipping our beers (the Märzen initially disappointed based on the color alone, but I did enjoy the malty flavor and the hint of a hoppy bite) got my stomach grumbling. I don't know what they were cooking up, but the scents of roasted meat, fresh bread, garlic and spices had me practically drooling in expectation. The schnitzel did not disappoint, though I do wish I'd chosen another dish - only because I now wish we had sampled more than one of their offerings. The breading on the schnitzel was crisp, never got soggy, and the meat was juicy and flavorful. The potatoes were buttery, and the tart bite provided by the cranberry-like sauce added another nice layer. We finished our meal with a second pint (I went with the Hausbier for my second round, following my husband's glowing review of it. I did enjoy it - it had an unexpected dark flavor and a bit of hoppiness) and a lot of fun conversation with our waiter. This was one spot we considered revisiting before leaving Salzburg, but the timing didn't work out (the next day was Christmas Eve, and they were closed up through the 26th). Still, as I mentioned above, it set the tone for all the wonderful food and beverage we consumed, as well as the friendly and accommodating service we received. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Really bad service! The waiter was rude and arrogant. We ordered loaded fries but was given normal fries-apparently a mistake. We asked to change. He said he changed the order to normal fries for us because the loaded fries would take too long and our food would be cold. This didn't make sense. I belive he made a mistake but tried to make an excuse for his mistake. Even he did change it for us for a good reason, he would have asked us first. Later I asked for adding some hot water for my mint hot tea, he refused. At the end, he even asked for tip. We refused, of course. Bad bad service ever in the restaurant of our Salzburg tour so far.

Yelp
Great little restaurant that partners with tours so you know it is good. We ordered the BEEF GOULASH, SALAD, and some type of FISH but I forget. The beef was really nice and tender and the bread dumplings were absolutely delicious. I paired the leftover sauce/remaining soup of the goulash with the pretzels (which were more expensive here at 1.60 but they were still delicious) and it was perfect. The salad's dressing was amazing but I was not a big fan of the prosciutto on top which was a bit too salty for my taste. We ordered the bitter chocolate soufflé with passion fruit and vanilla ice cream for dessert. Wish we ended the meal without it because the cake was really dry and overly sweet. It wasn't like the usual soufflé with a melting chocolate center and their chocolate drizzle was too overwhelming. The sourness of the passion fruit balanced it out but it didn't help that much. Overall, nice quite clean place. Only problem we had was with the service. People didn't pay much attention to us when we walked in and it took us forever to find the only one server they had for the day. Food service was fast though but we were the only people in there.

Yelp
Good food, lovely ambiance, affordable prices, friendly staff, but slllloooooowwww service! If you're "hangry", or more importantly your impatient lover is, don't eat here. But if you're cool, got time, and want to sit down and relax over a long meal, this is a great place. I think its known as the oldest restaurant in Salzburg? €11,70 daily special: Roast pork with dumplings, and a side of kraut. Cheap, filling, and good! There's a wide variety of entrees ranging from €10-30+, so you could splurge if you wanted to. There's also a selection of draft beers for €3-4. Our poor friendly waitress was hard at work...she was working 9-12 tables simultaneously at any given time. I know European restaurants aren't staffed like American restaurants, but that was ridiculous. Maybe someone called in sick?

Yelp
After a day of Salzburg highlights we were ready for beir and food. Took advantage of Rick Steeves suggestion and went across the Salzac for a pub crawl. We got as far as this lovely restaurant and settled in for a scrumptious dinner and beverage. I order the chicken breast with spinach in a mushroom cream sauce. They love to cook with mushrooms here und Ich love to eat them! My daughter had the ravioli and my sister-in-law the veggie pie. All ist gut, in fact really really gut. Just off the main tourist area but enough out of there to be reasonably priced and not too crowded. Highly recommend.

Yelp
A very enjoyable, well run, efficient restaurant with very good food. Many tourists seem to eat here, but that's really neither here nor there in terms of evaluating it. There is the indoor restaurant and two outdoor eating spaces. It was a warm evening and everyone wanted to be outdoors. Finding a table was difficult but when the Maitre 'd saw us looking he immediately took us to a "reserved" table and removed the sign. He figured they just put out reserved signs when they don't want to be overwhelmed with patrons as several tables had them. We ordered some Austrian wine, a Gruner Vetliner, and it was excellent. These Austrian whites are simple yet very dry and refreshing. Not as complex or deep as a Chardonnay or even a Pino Grigio. I had the chicken dish and it was wonderful, succulent and tender. I have to wonder what Europeans do with the chicken preparation as it is never dry and cooked to perfection. The only downside is how busy the restaurant gets at peek hours, yet they seem to be on top of it.

Yelp
I think Salzburg is one of those tourist towns where it is hard to get good service and a genuine meal. Despite being steps from tourist areas such as Mozartplatz and Getreidegasse, Gablerbrau transports you back in time with good Bavarian food and very helpful service. As with most places in the area, the server spoke perfect english and the menu was well laid out with different choices beyond Salzburg cuisine. My daughter enjoyed her ravioli stuffed with pumpkin and fried in brown butter (it was quite rich, though). I chowed down on bratwurst, saurkraut and fried potatoes (washed down with two big lagers!) and my wife ordered the goulash. I had ordered beef goulash the night before elsewhere and she had had a taste of mine, but this did not measure up. The place is pretty small, or if there are other rooms up or down, we did not see them because we sat in the front. The only other warning I will make is that our cell service went to 3G (and there is no free wifi) when we descended into Gablerbrau - not their fault (although wifi would be nice).

Yelp
So, i arrived in Salzburg earlier today for a week of business meetings. Mentioned to the hotel front desk that i was looking for as restaurant that had local dishes, good beer and an overall good vibe and they highly recommended Gablerbräu. I have included a couple of pictures of the restaurant interior if you are curious. I started with a 0,3l of their Hausbier and had the beef soup with crepe strips as a warmup. I ordered the Schnitzel and a 0,5l of the Hausbier for the main course. Again, everything was excellent and will definitely be back. Service was also quite good.

Karen W.

Yelp
The service was poor and the food was terrible. We ordered beer and wine right away, but our soup and then our entrees arrived before our beverages. We reminded the waiter, who said those came from the bar area -not his job. My pumpkin soup did not come with pumpkin oil and seeds as described. It tasted as if it came from a can or box and was topped with 3 soggy croutons. My mate's hamburger was good and the fries were OK. My son's salmon was tasteless presented with an unidentifiable sauce. House beer was very good.

Yelp
Excellent, excellent food! A few in our party tried the Wiener Schnitzel and loved it. I went the other way and had the vegetarian Ravioli. So so good! Loved the buttery sauce. The salad with olives and giant feta cubes was delicious as well. Great wine/beer selection too. Our waiter was very helpful too. Warning: they drop off hot baked pretzels but don't tell you they're not free. I think that's something that should be mentioned BEFORE your party devours the whole basket

Yelp
I didn't think we would like this kind of food but it was awesome! The Wiener schnitzel was fabulous. The breading was so good. The potatoes had a wonderful flavor. Also had the beef goulash. Just like southern beef stew. But better! So tender & wonderful. Wish they served it with those potatoes instead of dumplings bc the dumplings were not my favorite. We ate here 3 times during our stay in Salzburg. Reccd by our hotel.

Yelp
This place is quite and really nice to have a cute romantic dinner if you want too. Dinner was great here had the ox tail and was amazing good flavor and filling . Also had homemade goulash soup and was the best soup I've ever had it's a must try for sure .
google avatar

Lauren W.

Yelp
This place was classy and seated us very quickly. Most places cringed when we walked in with 2 toddlers but this place was very accepting of which was awesome. The goulash soup was Delish. I also had the river trout which was a large plate and has some of the most delicious risotto ever!

Yelp
Probably the best meal of our trip! Friendly staff, delicious food and great atmosphere. It was a mix of modern food with a traditional twist. They served pretzel bread for appetizer, yum! We ordered the wienerschnitzel, oxtail, ravioli and smoked char. All surpassed in flavor. Finally a wienerschnitzel that was not dry! Th oxtail stew was hearty and the oxtail just feel of the bone. The smoked char was served with horseradish strips with horseradish whipped cream and radish salad. Perfect blend of flavors. I highly recommend this restaurant in the heart of Salzburg.
google avatar

Randy M.

Yelp
Wonderful staff, beautiful inside and delicious food... what more can I ask for! I had the wiener schnitzel and it was delicious. The parsley potatoes were cooked to perfection. Weiner Schnitzel had just the right amount of seasoning and was cooking superbly.

Yelp
Gem of a restaurant. Reasonable prices and excellent food. Started off with soft, delicious salted pretzels for the table. Appetizers included the beef broth soup with cheese dumplings and the beef broth soup with pancake strips, both seasoned perfectly and hit the spot on a cold evening. The main course meals were beautiful prepared and we ate every bite.

Yelp
This early century brewery had been remodeled into a friendly hotel and fantastic traditional Austrian restaurant. Most of the original woodwork and the ceramic hearth had been retained and the rather big restaurant are perfect for any big event or intimate gathering. The traditional dishes were fantastic and the new world touch of the fresh salad is mouth watering good! Make sure you also try the soufflé.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
Very good. I am pretty much vegan and this place has great vegetarian dishes that was close enough for me to have an Austrian food experience. I had the potato leek soup and eggplant schnitzel and of course a couple Austrian beers. Very good! The feel of the restaurant is great and it has a lot of interesting history that I learned about while here. My wife had the fish and really enjoyed it too. Service was very friendly and English was very good, I try to speak a little German but they quickly moved to English. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Great service, great food! The restaurant in some form has been there since 1429 it seems, and perhaps with food and service like this, we see why. The wait staff, Steven and Claudine, were so very pleasant and helpful. Thanks guys! Everything we ordered was perfect. The tomato soup with coconut cream was delicious! The beef goulash was oh so good! The house special ox tail in a wine reduction was excellent! Then to follow it all with the Salzburg Nockrel ... wow!! Excellent, highly recommend.

Yelp
Staff was pretentious and rude. Only seating at the bar was available. Meals were average. Prices were in the upper teens or 20 euro range. Dealing with the staff made it unpleasant dining experience. They were more pretentious that the usual being dished out by locals targeted towards tourist. No desire to ever come back here.

Megan S.

Yelp
Poor service. Ok food with a limited menu. Came in for dinner on a holiday and we were told a 30 minute wait and found a spot at the bar after encountering a snooty hostess. Took 20 minutes just to get beer. Very clear that the waitstaff is only interested in being pleasant to locals and German speakers. Generally, I know severs in Austria to be pretty hands off, but this gal was non-existent especially when attempting to get the check. She also brought the wrong entree, forgot a beer and then had the audacity to eyeball my friend that was paying and say "Tip?" She was clearly counting on the fact that we didn't know what "trinkgeld" was and was hoping for a standard American tip.
google avatar

Catherine T.

Yelp
Was a bit pricey but good food. Schnitzel was very good. Good Apple strudel. Our room had good decor. Not a fast restaurant.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
We had been in Austria for a week-and-a-half and had not had any beef ghoulash yet, which seemed like a shame so we decided to change that at this place. They serve a great beef ghoulash! I admit this is a dish that I have no history with, and it was good, but be ready: it is a good sized bowl of beef and sauce and that's it. The beef was fantastically tender, and we really enjoyed their outdoor seating here.
google avatar

Katrina L.

Yelp
1/2 grilled half chicken, it tastes juicy not dry. And the pork tastes like Taiwan traditional soy-stewed pork, also yummy.
google avatar

Varya A.

Yelp
We didn't like the same service at all. It took them a lot of time to bring our food, so some of us had already finished eating by the time some just started. Cappuccino isn't tasty and food is obviously overpriced.
google avatar

Kalen R.

Yelp
Excellent food, service and atmosphere. After being turned away from another restaurant nearby that couldn't fit our group of seven, we were happily accommodated by cheerful staff. The ambiance is warm and pleasant and the decor is a mix of modern and traditional. We all ordered different dishes and everyone was very happy with their meal. My beef goulash was excellent, and my sister's potato soup was a huge hit. Our server was attentive and very kind. We left completely satisfied and in good spirits.

Yelp
My family and I had a positive experience at this place. Our waiter overheard us talking in Spanish and began talking to us in Spanish. He was pleasant and helpful. The food was very good. We had a great time.

Yelp
Incredible food and drinks. The Risotto is to die far, and the Pike filet was assume as well.

Yelp
Food was delicious, waiter was nice and attentive. The interior was very nice and clean. My daughter said the schnitzel was excellent. The asparagus soup was excellent and very tasty. We highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
This was right behind our hotel - Star Inn- and we ended up here because we were too tired to walk anywhere else. We had the best meal of our trip - service was excellent and food was absolutely wonderful. I am vegetarian which is not easy in Bavaria and Austria and Gabler Brau had fantastic options (I was so happy). Don't miss it - it's surrounded by beautiful architecture (duh- it's Salzburg) and 2 trick fountains so it's lovely and delicious!

Jason W.

Yelp
It is indeed a very good place to try out traditional Viennese dishes, like the boiled beef, apple strudel. Beer is awesome too. It is not as pricey as you think for a fine place. Worth to give a try.
google avatar

Gjergji P.

Yelp
Very nice place. Staff it is friendly and very helpful. I arrive here on kitchen's closing time (at 10:00 pm, exactly on the clock) and they didn't hesitate to prepare the dinner. To keep it short, 5 stars with a big smile.....
google avatar

Michelle H.

Yelp
Amazing food, fast service, lots of tables (three levels and outside), busy atmosphere, reasonable prices, friendly staff, traditional features... Cannot fault it at all! Would definitely come back here next time I'm in Salzburg!

Johanne Y.

Yelp
We had the worst service experience at this restaurant, having to wait 1 1/2 hours to get our meal! The waitress didn't seem to notice or care that any of her tables weren't getting their food. She finally retook our orders without an apology and chalked it up to a computer glitch (2 other tables got up and left so she was definitely clueless!) When the food came, nothing worth mentioning so be warned and don't eat here!

Federico C.

Yelp
I did not feel welcome. Nobody showed up to ask for our order until 20 minutes after. If you hate tourists, dont open a restaurant.

Midtown B.

Yelp
I came here three times on my previous visit to Salzburg. Now I remember why. Came here late after a concert tonight. Portions are huge, simply prepared, piping hot, and reasonably priced. One thing I find in Salzburg is that portion sizes are quite small. Not here. Very pleased . . . again. (One suggestion: come here for a late night dinner after the crowds have departed; it's a very different experience from the hectic rush of the daytime hours.)
google avatar

Tracy F.

Yelp
Delicious food and ambiance! We started our visit to Salzburg with dinner at Gabler Brau. They were very busy for a Thursday night. We enjoyed a level of comfort that set the tone for the entire stay.

Yelp
Gabler Brau has been on the right bank of the Salzach River for nearly 700 years (since 1429), so don't come for chrome and glass, come to see an authentic Austrian inn well managed for a long time. It is in the old town on the North side of the river, just across the bridge from the castle and cathedrals. And again though all Austria thinks beer is necessary, there are plenty of non-alcoholic beverages including local Almdudler soft drink. They have all the Austrian standards, and very nice vegetarian options. Austrians can made any vegetable into a tasty soup. The breaded Eggplant Schnitzels were soaked in a lovely liquid, breaded and fried and a treat. They offered white asparagus dish. The salads are excellent. And their house made Apfelstrudel was the best we had on this trip. They also make a local Salzburg special desert, the Salzburger Nockerel, a mountain of meringue covered with a berry sauce that will please all desert explorers. Several different dining rooms, ours was next to an ancient Kacheloffen, or ceramic heating stove, and with stained glass windows at one end. Outside seating on the pedestrian only street, but remember they allow smoking at outside tables so you might be next to a smoker, an assault to the nose that Americans are no longer used to. Inside is smoke free and historic.

Carlos J.

Yelp
Took some friends here after a day trip in the Alps. Everyone loved their meals, including the vegetarian. It's a beautiful, well kept old restaurant with great food, and not crazy expensive. Recommend this place 100% if you're in Salzburg.
google avatar

Frank E.

Yelp
Had a great "filling" lunch of tafelspitz. Not too sure what classic Austrian food would be, but this dish could qualify. Boiled beef with horseradish, carrots, and sides of potatoes and creamed spinach. Along with cold beer, definitely fills you up for some olympic sightseeing. Service was good and friendly. Oufdoor seating on a cool summer day was perfect for people watching.

Sarah R.

Yelp
This was the best meal we had in Salzburg. We had the oxtail, which is the house specialty, and split a "shared" salad (not on the menu, we just said we wanted to split a salad and it's what came out). Both were incredible, as was the house beer! The atmosphere is cozy as it is the basement of the building. Highly recommended, especially during a cold spell or rainy day in the town!
