I heard about this place long ago..and now I live down the street so had to go try it out. Reasonable prices for the area for sure. Cute atmosphere. I had the chicken mole and a mango margarita. Who would have thought traditional mole and chicken would work really well? The chicken was moist and had great seasoning. I do wish you got more beans and rice. I don't know about it being dog friendly. But they do take credit cards.

We had a delicious lunch on the amazing deck overlooking the ocean. It’s just beautiful up there and it’s very comfortable even on a hot day. We both had burritos with green sauce, beans and rice. To start, the guacamole was so good. This place gives you all of the feel good, feel full, and beautiful experience you could want.

I always thought that Caesar salad is one of the most underrated Mexican dishes (most people don't even know that it's Mexican to begin with). Here, it's prepared table side, like it's meant to be, which is actually pretty rare outside of Tijuana. Fresh and delicious.

OMG. This place is amazing. The table side Caesar salad is to die for. I will be going back just to have that. The enchiladas are so soft and tender. If you want to sit outside, you need to make reservations.

Gaby’s is a PV staple in the community and they have many fans and friends. I think everyone who lives here has been at least once. Reservations are highly recommended especially for groups of 5 or more. Make reservations if you want to sit outside. They usually have a singer here, though the night I went there was no singer. I went mid week so perhaps it’s more of a Thursday to Sunday service they offer. Very soft music so you can still chat with your table guests Must: the Julian Cesar salad. They make it at your table. Very impressive little show. Try: for dessert order one of the flaming drinks. While a little pricey the show is well worth the cost. It’s very cool and so far the only place in PV that I know that do this.

We ate here on our first night in Puerto Vallarta! The drinks were great, big margaritas. Food was classic Mexican food. Guacamole wasn’t as flavorful as I was hoping but still enjoyed our meal. Patio area has a great view, recommend sitting outside! Quiet area near the church. Everyone has said the caesar salad is amazing but we didn’t try it. We’ll have to go back!

We had an incredible cooking class with Chef Julio - and it was so good we returned for a birthday meal the next day. Chef’s passion for Mexico and Mexican food was clear, and we felt honoured to explore his recipes together. We walked through Vallarta snd were introduced to everyone at the local market, even trying some tortillas straight from the tortillia. The course was adapted to what we enjoyed eating, and it was the best thing we did in our entire 2 week trip. The setting - on a rooftop with views of the church and sea - was incredible. And I’m really proud of the food we made together. It tasted incredible. We ended with raicilla tasting and a great chat over food. So good - highly recommend. The next day we returned to dine for my birthday. We had enchiladas with mole sauce. The food, drinks, and ambiance were perfect. Thank you so much - we will be back next year.

We went on the cooking class experience. This was a highlight of our trip. Start with some history of the local area, then walking to the market in oldtown, getting introduced to the best Tacos stands and other amigos. Shopping for our dinner supplies, drive back to the restaurant, everyone participating in preparation and cooking an incredible meal. So much to take in, too much to explain. Just treat yourself and go on this tour!!!!

Yelp
My lovely lady is a big TikTok gal, and she mentioned the spat between Gaby's and the neighbors, which went viral, so away we went to try it out. First things first, I absolutely love this part of town. We walked through the cobbled roads, and up the rickety stairs, and we found a wonderful and inviting man at the bottom of the steps to the restaurant. It was a gorgeous day, with temps in the mid 90's, and a slight sea breeze tickling our exposed skin on occasion. Truly perfect conditions to eat Mexican food. We were seated immediately, and the place was all but empty on this lovely afternoon. Our waiter, Cesar, was such a character. With the magic tricks, gift of gab, and a wonderful laugh, he took exceptional care of us. I suspect that may have been on account of my sexy and beautiful date, but that's just my observation. Food: Caesar salad (served table side) Wow, this was truly impressive and the foodie in me was geeking out. Hard! Our waiter came over and began to make the dressing from scratch and watching his every movement was just a wonderful start to our dinner. The rich, deep, garlicky, umami, funkiness of a traditional Caesar dressing is such a wonderful treat. The lettuce was crisp and fresh, dressed to absolute perfection. Each bite was funkier and more delicious and just had me wanting more and more. Chicken Mole I've only had mole in the US, and this was not like any of the dishes I've tried. It had so many different flavors and aromas. I was able to taste the depth of flavors with each bite. The chicken just tasted so much different and was cooked to perfection. My lovely lady was enticed by our waiter to have an after-dinner drink. Not just any drink though. This was the Cesar specialty of Courvoisier and Gran Marnier. She is such a trooper because she's a wine, champagne, and beer drinker and here she was sipping on Cognac. We had such a wonderful dining experience, and it just felt like a place we could hang out and dine all the time. The space is charming, the decor is on point, and overall, just a really fun and enjoyable date night for us.

Yelp
Everything was off. I don't know if they were overwhelmed because they were busy, or if my expectations were set too high because of the reviews. The food was bland, the setting was cute, the service was lacking. Try it for yourself.

Rick L.

Yelp
Wow, what a find. We were lost walking around old town, deciding if we would make it back to the Marina area in time for dinner and we came upon Gaby's. Such a great call to stop here for dinner versus rushing back to the Marina. We had the table side Guacamole (a must in Mexico) and split the fajitas. Simply perfect! Great drinks and service too. Don't overlook Gaby's in the sea of wonderful restaurants in Puerto Vallarta. Added bonus, they offer cooking classes too.

Clarisa B.

Yelp
You must visit Gaby's the tequila shrimp was amazing. My husband had the coco shrimp and loved it. Our waiter was sweet and gave us some tips on where to visit.

Annika K.

Yelp
the food was AMAZING... julio was truly the best teacher and chef ive met. Me and my friends did the cooking class. not only did we learn how to cook authentic mexican food, but we learned how to pick the appropriate ingredients from the local market! While walking through the markets, he pointed out a bunch of good taco spots or other authentic restaurants. the rooftop had an amazing view and the weather was perfect!!

Billy V.

Yelp
Nice place with an award winning chef...who does cooking classes and is on TV! Had a chicken mole dish with green and brown mole and a nice dessert of flan cheesecake. I'd come back! Very nice venue!

Jeffrey R.

Yelp
Just had a wonderful dinner with great service. I had not been here for a while, but am determined to support this place more after new jerk ex-pat neighbors sued this restaurant that has been here over 3 decades to stop their beautiful music. I had 2 Cadillac margaritas, the Gabys salad w tequila dressing, and the tequila shrimp (tequila 3 ways, lol!) All were wonderful, and the service and view were terrific. I can't wait to come back. Also, I hope to meet those neighbors one day to request that they leave this beautiful country.

Yelp
Feb 2024 Update - First time back at Gaby's since Pre Covid. Food is as good as ever and the roof top dining is not to be missed. Continues to be one of the best dining spots in the area and a Puerto favorite that I keep coming back to over and over again over the Years!

Ken T.

Yelp
Fantastic food. Tried enchilada, chile releno, chicken mole, tamale. It was all good, all tasting homemade. Definitely signing up for the cooking classes on my next visit to PV.

Mari A.

Yelp
"The restaurant is excellent. The food was good. We started with fresh guacamole, and it was so good. We also had the chile relleno and chicken mole. The service was excellent. My only complaint is about how small the portion of rice is."

Jack G.

Yelp
Delicious authentic local cuisine. Rooftop terrace dining with nice city views. Reasonable prices. Pleasant and attentive English-speaking staff.

Donna J.

Yelp
We just returned from 2 glorious weeks in Puerto Vallarta and Gaby's was one of the highlights of our dining experiences while we were there. The chicken mole enchilada's were fabulous (not to mention I had taken 2 cooking classes there over the last 6 months and and the most recent one taught us how to make their family mole recipe!). The tableside guac was wonderful and my husband had their shrimp fajita's - everything was just wonderful. The servers were great and we can't wait to go back again when we are there next. I do highly recommend taking one of the cooking classes that Gaby's offers. Chef Julio took us to the markets to buy the food, educated us on how to pick out the fruits/veggies/fish/meats for freshness and taste. We then cooked as a small group and were taught many wonderful things which I now incorporate in my Mexican meals at home. Learning how to work with peppers was something I wanted to get experienced in and I now have a much better understanding of them and preparation for dishes! It is a great way to spend a beautiful day in Puerto Vallarta and you won't be disappointed! Great big thank you to Chef Julio, his wonderful mom, sister Gaby and Aldo for making both of the classes I have taken there so much fun and educational - oh, and delicious!

Mark G.

Yelp
My wife, daughter and I visited Puerto Vallarta and stopped by Gaby's For an early dinner. The mixed reviews of recent made it a bit sketchy as to what we would experience. I'm so glad we went! The food and service were amazingly good! We were the only diners, but like I said we arrived before the evening dinner hours. We had chips and house salsa and purchased fresh guacamole too! Excellent! My daughter had fish (3 pc) tacos, while my wife had (3 pc) chicken (breast) enchiladas, and I had (3 pc) shrimp enchiladas in verde sauce. The food was delicious! The wait staff: very efficient and kind. We very much enjoyed this meal and would highly recommend a visit if you're in Puerto Vallarta and want to get off the beaten path of the boardwalk.

Kushal D.

Yelp
Came by with a large group, having been super full from apps earlier. The food was so good though, I had enchiladas and guac! The salsa was really good, and I heard great things about the chimichangas! Overall the hibiscus marg wasn't my favorite but the service and everything else was delicious. The Ambiance was 10/10

Yelp
This is a review about Gaby's cooking class, not the restaurant itself. I would've given it a better score if I hadn't taken another class two days earlier. The other class got everyone involved in talking to each other, where is this one was more about the instructor. He is a local television chef, and we did learn quite a few new things, but he did talk more about himself than the food. We all did a lot of chopping and made up so much food. We could've fed 40 people. It was fun that we made up several different sauces and beans, but I wouldn't say any restaurant recipes for my favorite. I've never had pineapple salsa before, and that is something I will make it home. The moly was good, but the fella is were lackluster by the time we ate them they were cold. I think the classroom been a lot better if we would've made you were things and less of it. I learned the most at the market, as he explained about male and female, bell peppers and onions. Overall it was fun, but not fun as the other class I took. I did enjoy the people, but once he realized I need how to cut and chop I did a lot of it, but I do cook a lot! Give the class a try, you might like it a lot more than I did!

Nancy M.

Yelp
How fun, festive and flavorful...this neighborhood gems sits among the cobblestone streets of Centro. Bright colorful and delish traditional Mexican menu. Cooking classes can be taken three days a week. Restaurant service was friendly, attentive and food was so good. I had to try Mama Conchitas chicken soup-a winner. The chili relliano was scrumptious. Margarita was big and sooooo tasty. What a way to spend an early afternoon in PV!!!

Donna J.

Yelp
Everything is amazing! A must go to when in PV! I highly recommend it! The chicken mole enchiladas are fantastic as is everything else.

Marty W.

Yelp
Lovely place, delicious food, wonderful service. We've eaten there every time we've been in PV and have never been disappointed. Great food, delightful, welcoming service and a charming place to be.

Amy A.

Yelp
Food was delicious! I had the lobster enchiladas with a hibiscus margarita and my partner had the gigante steak burrito. This is a wonderful group of people and offer great quality! Be sure to stay for the magic trick! This is my new favorite restaurant in PV!!

Michael E.

Yelp
We stopped here for a late lunch and had fish tacos and chile relleno. They were good. The restaurant is comfortable.

Jennifer N.

Yelp
Phenomenal cooking class! I was doing a lot of research on cooking classes in PV and it seemed like everything was at least $100 USD/person in an okay looking kitchen with no tour to local market. Here, you get a beautiful outdoor rooftop kitchen with views of the cathedral and ocean. You also get to grab the ingredients at a local market and learn about the food and history. Lastly, we prepared such tasty meals and really enjoyed the instruction of our chef Julio. Amazing way to spend the day! We made so many types of salsas (ranchera, bandera, pina habanero, chipotle), guacomole, grilled red snapper, chicken mole, and chile relleno.

Garry W.

Yelp
The service is top notch, the patio is wonderful and dog friendly. The food is delicious and the prices are very fair! The cesare salad dressing is made from scratch right in front of you and they have a special coffee drink for dessert that is quite the experience! My third time here and not my last!

Elise B.

Yelp
COOKING CLASS SHOULD BE CALLED "COOKING WITH JULIO" My friend and I took Gaby's Cooking class. Let's start with the positive. We learnt some stuff about PV and Mexican cooking, we had a good time and the food was excellent. Now for the not so good. I wanted to learn to do stuff that I could repeat at home and make for my family. The way the class is thought, it is impossible to follow one recipe from beginning to end. My friend and I heard Julio say not to worry, that he would send us instructions. We only got a thank you email with links to leave reviews. When we wrote to Julio to inquire about it, twice, he did not even bother to answer. UPDATE: Following this review, Chef Julio did finally reply to our earlier emails and sent the recipes. He stated that something must have gone wrong because he always sends them. Thank you!

Dwight S.

Yelp
Gaby's has great food and music!! Love going there!! The mariachi band is lots of fun!

Ellen F.

Yelp
My husband, my sister, and I attended a Wednesday cooking class by Chef Julio. I love to cook, but he is passionate. He filled us with not only food but also the local history of the restaurant, the street vendors, fresh markets, and the city and people of Puerto Vallarta. He was an amazing manager of keeping 14 people actively involved in the whole process, from shopping, cleaning, chopping, smashing, frying, presenting, and eating. The various sauces were the things that make Mexican food so good. We never knew there were so many ingredients and some quite unusual. My husband hardly ever cooks, but Chef made him a master griller!! Thank you for a very special birthday activity. We were exhausted and full of food and knowledge at the end of our day!

Jay X.

Yelp
The place had two other groups dining on a Friday night was not an encouraging sign. They immediately made several attempts to push their 130 pesos guac multiple times, no thanks. The food was okay, but the main dishes were just okay, accompanied by very small portions of rice, vegetables and beans, could leave a hungry diner wanting. I would give a three and a half if the option was available. They didn't do quite good enough for us to return. Had a touristy feel to it, which is okay, but not my thing.

Bill B.

Yelp
We came here just before 1pm (their opening time) and they seated us right away on the patio that had a view of the Malecón My wife and I both ordered the Cinco de Mayo. This dish included Chicken Molé (the Molé sauces was to die for!) Poblano with cheese, a tamalé and an enchilada. Everything was delicious. For drinks, my wife had the Passion Fruit Margarita and I hade the Mexican Flag Tequila shot. It was 3 shot glasses, starting with a red salty-sweet juice in the first glass, a double shot of silver tequila in the second and lime juice in the third. It was fun to sip the red, the white and the green in a row. After our entrees we split the best flan I've ever had! I highly recommend this place if you're looking for great food at a great price with a great experience and friendly service.

Russell P.

Yelp
Always a nice place to spend a leisurely lunch. Eat inside with A/C or outside under a covered balcony or on the patio with sun umbrellas. Service is Friendly. Extensive menu of typical Mexican fare. Full bar. Most bottles of wine priced at 400-600 pesos. Credit cards.

Noe C.

Yelp
Found this on Yelp and the food looked very appealing. We came in on a quiet night and sat upstairs. Servers were friendly, atmosphere was calmer than being on the Malecon, about 2 blocks up and a few stairs we got a small view of the action across. The server suggested the dish with small tastings of the restaurant and that was delicious. Got a bit of Chile relleno, enchilada, tamale etc. I got the fish tacos with chipotle sauce and green sauce and pico de gallo. So good and filling. Prices were decent. Hubby got the cocktail with mezcal and I got a Cuban chelsea. Was ok. Enough to stay calm and satisfied. One of the best moments was hearing the artist Anais Belloso, amazing voice and perfect sound for a calm atmosphere. Just breathtaking serene and delicious evening. Certainly come by if I'm PV to get away from all the activity while staying nearby the Malecon. They accept both cards and cash.

Matt L.

Yelp
Really a 4.5. This place is good, just not quite as good as Lonely Planet made it out to be. First thing: make a reservation! Those folks got the awesome tables on the hillside while I dined inside. I started with a house margarita, which was the best one I had in PVR. Next up was the guacamole. Do what I did and save your chips for the guac because it only comes with two. It was top-notch guac. Now, for my main, it was a Lenten Friday, so I needed to go pescetarian and this ended up with shrimp fajitas. The lobster enchiladas tempted but seemed very expensive at 600 pesos. My fajitas were fine, nothing special. They came with a bunch of hot tortillas, but the plating looked ridiculous with three little scoops of guac, beans, and rice on a huge plate. How about some more of those sides, gang? They aren't expensive! The one thing I didn't try and eventually did get curious about was the homemade Caesar salad for two that is made tableside. The couple behind me ordered it and claimed it's the best Caesar they've ever eaten and they come every year to get it again. It took about 10 minutes for the server to make it, and I believe they mentioned fresh egg and anchovies. Definitely left me curious!

Marcia R.

Yelp
This is- great place. Go here!!! Really good chili rellanos. I had traditional Mexicano and my partner the white sauce with shrimp. Yummmmmm great foodie stop! .we went back today and split the fish Baha tacos. DELICIOUS! Ordered a small side of rice as an add on. Perfect lunch. Best place we have found so far! Don't miss this place. You will not be disappointed!

Jason K.

Yelp
When I go on vacation this os my spot ro eat real mexican dood everything is delicious and the music is always good keeping a real Mexican environment.

Jon C.

Yelp
Cute atmosphere and live music. Mediocre, bland food. Chicken tasted like rubbery plastic. Horrible service Skip this place when you're visiting PV Go to Peppe's or Pacho's or La Palapa or Iguana bar or anywhere else beside this shitty place

Lisa S.

Yelp
Their food (or at least our dinners) were absolutely delicious! I ordered the Cinco de Mayo which is a sampler platter that includes chicken molé, a tamale, enchiladas and something else I just can't recall, forgive me! Either way, all that plus rice, beans & tortillas, I ate like a Queen and had lots of leftovers. I also ordered a Tamarindo margarita which was soooo good. We also ordered their guacamole which was heavenly. Service was excellent. If you want good food, eat here.

Jamie J.

Yelp
The food here is incredible! We had the guacamole, enchiladas, shrimp and we loved everything. It tasted fresh and was full of flavor. If you want amazing food, you have to come here! It is a great location and great ambiance.

Molly J.

Yelp
Really loved this restaurant. We got the mole and the chile relleno and both were excellent. The table next to us ordered the Cesar salad and the waiter spent almost 10 minutes making the dressing from scratch right at their table. Also loved the atmosphere- it's a beautiful old retrofitted house with a great view at sunset. Bathrooms were also very clean, which is a good sign!

Quin S.

Yelp
Outstanding. Food was excellent, service was excellent. They seated us quite privately so our toddlers didn't disturb others. Reasonable prices. Wonderful experience.

Nancy B.

Yelp
There were four of us, one had shrimp, tacos, coconut shrimp, enchilada, and a giant chicken burrito. The food was very good and we left stuffed But sadly, we must've had a night of poor service as our waiter did not come back to the table, unless requested to do so. Even paying for the bill was difficult and drawn out.

Cherie M.

Yelp
Amazing! The food was delicious and atmosphere was perfect. Our waiter, Christian, was the best!

Deborah K.

Yelp
This review is mostly about the cooking class my husband and I took at Gaby's. We arrived at 9am and were greeted and told to take a seat while we waited for the chef. Everyone was offered coffee and bottled water while we waited. Chef Julio Cesar greeted us shortly after we arrived and gave each of us (4 of us in total) a shopping bag and an apron. Then he told us we were going to walk to the local markets to shop for ingredients for the cooking class. As we started walking, he told us about Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton building a house in Puerto Vallarta and asked if we'd like to see it. We all said we would, so we walked up some very steep steps and had a look at the outside of the house, which was pretty cool! We went first to a fruit/veggie market and the chef told us all about the local produce, explaining everything in great detail. We learned all about fresh and dried peppers and even how to pick a perfectly ripe pineapple. Next we went to the tortilla factory and watched a couple of ladies making fresh corn tortillas. Chef got us each a freshly made (still warm) tortilla and they were deliciously soft and fresh. Next we went to a butcher to buy some chicken and then to a fish market to buy fresh fish for ceviche. Lastly we went to a cheese vendor to buy a couple of kinds of cheese. Then we walked back to the restaurant to start preparing our feast. The chef gave us all plenty of tasks, teaching us all about the ingredients and what to do with each. We worked together to make such an amazing spread! We made guacamole P.V. style, cooked red salsa, fresh green salsa, cooked sesame salsa, habanero/pineapple salsa, tortilla soup, cactus salad, ceviche, chicken mole and chile relleno. We sat down to eat the huge feast and enjoyed every single bite, although it was waaaay too much food lol. We also enjoyed a taste of the restaurant's own raicilla which was deliciously smoky and intoxicating! I ordered a margarita and it was honestly the best one I had ever tasted! I can't say enough about how amazing the class was and how generous the chef was with his knowledge about Puerto Vallarta, food and cooking. This was one of my favourite days ever and I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone!!!! If you're in P.V. and you're a foodie/cooking enthusiast this class is a MUST!!!! If I could give it ten stars, I would!!!

Burton A.

Yelp
Nice views. Dynamic burrito for me. Wife has great fish. Nice people and bathroom facilities were immaculate.

Lisa B.

Yelp
Tried this place great food, if you like seafood also pasta dish. 2 blocks off the boardwalk.

Gillian T.

Yelp
Recently participated in an authentic Mexican cooking class. Was lots of fun. The spread of food the twelve of us prepared was delicious. So why the 2 star rating????? We were promised 16 pages of recipes to accompany the experience. The recipes were never sent. I have requested twice for what was promised by the chef himself. If I had known that they were not going to follow through with the recipes, I would have taken notes. Otherwise, a good experience.

Jay N.

Yelp
Wonderful Mexican restaurant with AC and quaint ambiance. Vegetarian options are limited to vegetable chimichangas, Parmesan pasta, and a couple other options.

OG R.

Yelp
Cheap! Good food! Fast service! Hidden gem restaurants! Yummmmy! I went to this restaurant after a vlogger suggested it! Good thing I listened! Cute set up!

Gina Y.

Yelp
We were walking around old town Puerto Vallarta and came upon this quiet little upstairs restaurant decorated with Bougainvillea on Wrought iron railings. It was a couple of blocks away from the Malecon but had an ocean view! The chicken enchiladas verde were excellent! I ice cream and flan for dessert we're perfecto!

Karma K.

Yelp
One of the worst service in PV. Waiters had no clue what they were doing or what is proper. Here is a sample of few: 1 Taking all the sauces away while I am eating my tacos 2. Not knowing what they are upselling, made no sense 3. They wanted to take away our child's booster seat while we were eating. 4. They were constantly talking and I could barley hear my company. 5. They brought the wrong orders. 6. They brought our food out at different time. This was the first time and last time.

Cody H.

Yelp
Our server guaranteed that we'd enjoy every item that we ordered at the start. Even though many in PV promise this, he was absolutely right. FIRST IMPRESSION: Entrance was a nice photo op and dining area was quiet, but well maintained. We sat on the patio which overlooked a plaza. Our hostess was friendly and a great conversationalist. The menu was small, but it went beyond the basic tacos, burritos, and ceviche that we were used to. DRINKS: Gotta pay for bottled water, but that's standard for Mexico. Prices were reasonable and drinks were mixed well. Try the Margarita, it has Ricialla tequila which is stronger than usual but adds a nice flavor. APPS: Order the Ceaser Salad, no question. This was the best one I've ever had. It's prepared right in front of you, so you can customize your dressing and add in protein or whatever you want. Proportions are just right and you'll probably learn a thing or two watching the preparation. ENTREES: I took some Yelper's advice and ordered the Chile Relleno. It had the right amount of sauce and was plated very well. I took it with beef inside, which was very smooth and flavorful. My family ordered pasta which seemed to be cooked well and met their expectations. My brother ordered a GIANT burrito with beef and was very pleased. DESSERT: Flan was slightly above average. Nice texture, but no eye-popping flavors. SERVICE: Amazing. Good hearted people who are proud of where they work. Not trying to scam or upswell you, a pleasant relief.

Yelp
Best Mexican food in puerto Vallarta. I ordered Gaby at gaby.........................................................................

Jo Ann B.

Yelp
Best meal of our trip! We watched a few You Tube Videos on Gaby's. It was on our must try list for our vacation in PV. We made a reservation because we had a large group. Reservations are recommended because it can get very busy. Gaby was there supervising. It is always nice to see when the owner is present and involved. We ate upstairs in the open air dining room. There were also tables outside. The service was excellent and there was live music. We had several options from the catch of the day. All were very good. Particularly loved the stuffed avocados and table side bananas flambé. What a great experience and meal!
