We got a small single queen room which was fine. We had a coffee maker but, no other amenities (no tv either). All this is fine as well since this is an historic inn, not a modern motel.|However, it has a nice, outdoor pool and a botanical area. Breakfast at V6 has a simple menu but it's all good! Hotel staff was great.|The Pub reminded me of an Irish pub where strangers interact since it's small and intimate. Service could be improved while it's not too busy but another server came in once it did get busy. We got much better service once the place filled up. |Otherwise, I wouldn't change a thing and we'll likely be back.

The staff at the hotel, bar, coffee shop and restaurant were exceptional. The room was large and roomy with beautiful wood shutters in the windows. The bed was comfy and I loved the pillows! The food at the 12Gage Restaurant was outstanding. My husband had the Nilgai steak, and he said it was better than a ribeye. I had the tile fish, and it was perfect. We finished the meal with a delicious tres leches cake. We really liked the laid back atmosphere at the White Buffalo Bar next door. Good cocktails and cold beer. The V6 Coffee Shop had a nice selection of lunch sandwiches and tasty coffees. This was our first visit to Marathon and the Gage Hotel, it was my husband's birthday. We cannot think of a better place to have celebrated. We will most definitely return.

This resort/hotel is an extremely unique and beautiful spot. A 5 star experience without a doubt. the most intense and Texas/ranch/cowboy theme decor I have ever seen. the place is a knock-out. The couryards and patios are beautiful. The restaurant was a little expensive but worth the money. I had the best roasted chicken dish I have ever had in my life (73 years). Highly recommended.

Stayed here at the end of our week in the Big Bend area and loved it. The food is great at the 12 Gage, the Brick Vault, and the V6 for breakfast. Pretty gallery and shop. The pool was relaxing and the spa was an awesome experience. Great for a weekend getaway or self-care reset with the Gage Gardens also available for strolling or exercising. One thing is that is says 40 min the entrance of Big Bend National Park but you’re really 1.5 hours from the main basin area. So if you’re planning to do a lot in the park I’d stay closer in Terlingua or the Chisos Mountain Lodge. Wouldn’t be great to drive back and forth from the Gage to the park more than once. Overall the Gage and surrounding food/experiences are a really high quality experience in an unexpected place.

Our stay at the Gage was only supposed to last two nights, but we extended it to three because we were having such a wonderful experience! My husband and I came to Marathon for our honeymoon and checked in to the Gage after a long wedding week and a long drive from Austin. We were exhausted and needed rest… our stay at The Gage was just the thing. We stayed in the Owners Suite and everything was great, from the soft bed to the coffee that was set and ready to go. When we extended our stay, we had to move rooms because the Suite was already booked, but the wonderful staff made it so easy for us! They kept us on the second floor and moved our belongings for us while we were out and about. The hospitality is incredible. The team at the front desk had become our friends by the second day and really went above and beyond, talking to us about our wedding and exclaiming over our pictures, giving us recommendations for what to do in the area, bringing us a bag of ice for our cooler when none was available in town… the whole nine yards! They were so sweet and friendly, we were sad to say goodbye! We spent a lot of time by the saltwater pool, and the peace and quite is so refreshing. The town is walkable, and everything connected to the Gage is lovely to explore. Also, squeaks the cat is adorable and hangs out in the lobby most of the day in front of the fire, which instantly makes the place feel cozy and homey when you step in the door. This is a friendly, cozy, peaceful, beautiful, refreshing place to stay. Truly a ten star experience and worth your time.

We had a wonderful stay at the Gage Hotel. The nearby amenities and restaurants made it easy to relax - everything you need for unwinding was within steps of our room. The Alfred Gage Suite was beautifully appointed and professionally prepared for our stay. Clean, safe, and quiet - the room was perfect for relaxing and recharging after visiting Big Bend.

Very nice hotel with fantastic staff. Very good Dinner and Bar menus. The 12 Gage restaurant is great (suggest you take a patio table if you want some lively company - the restaurant can be quiet if you have a late table). The Pizza and distillery are open only at certain times and are a must visit

Google
I've traveled to Big Bend National Park about a dozen times over the last 35 years and for the first time decided to stay at the Gage Hotel in Marathon with my two teenage kids. It was a memorable experience. After 4 days of hiking, its nice to relax and take a day in comfort. The Gage owns not just the hotel but the garden two blocks away and the two restaurants next door. The steaks at the 12 Gage were excellent. Good food and good rooms. Staff at the hotel and restaurant were what you would expect at a more luxury hotel. Hospitality is part of the package. As we were exploring Marathon, member of the maintenance staff who was kind and allowed us to look around pointed us to Post Park and how he would take his kids there. We went and what a pleasant surprise

Yelp
The hotel itself has lots of character. Fun just to look around. Staff was great. Food at 12 Gage Restaurant was not good and definitely not worth the price. Waitstaff was great. My Room was in the Captain Shepard House. Nice, but not worth the price. Low water pressure and on and off Hot Water. Cannot recommend. Will not be back.

Yelp
I'd say strong 4. Let me make it simple. There are several awesome places to stay in this town and Gage is one of them. Chances are if you are coming this way you want to stay in a historic hotel. Or at least have an authentic west Texas experience. Stay here! Go!!!

Yelp
5/5 A great place to stay in Marathon, Texas if you're looking for a retreat. It has a spa, gym for use, outdoor pool, and firepits, attached restaurant is called 12 Gage and Bar: Buffalo Bar. We stayed in the Shepard house, the historic house behind the hotel suites. It had nice rooms(spacious), the only downside is that there was no attached bathroom, and it was outside of the room, down the hall. The hotel is beautifully designed and clean. They give you a keurig coffee machine and free water bottles in the room! The location is excellent as it is down the street from food, and drinks. It is about an hour and 30 minutes from Big Bend National Park, this is not the place to stay if you're wanting to transport to the park; I'd recommend closer towns.

Yelp
This place seldom disappoints when you're in Marathon. To those who don't know Marathon is a tiny little town at the turn to Big Bend. There isn't much there, at all. Fortunately, the Gage hotel was restored years back and had been a destination for all. I can't vouch for the single rooms because I have always stayed in one the casitas on the property. However, they are always nicely detailed and clean. The lobby is totally west Texas, warm and inviting. The restaurant and bar (12 Gage) are the finishing touches. The food is always spot on and the wait staff is helpful and pleasant. They have their hands full with customers who have had one or two extra Ranch Waters (guilty) and do so with a smile. The quail options are a favorite for all of us who stay at the Gage. Book a room in advance because they fill up fast.

Yelp
I'd heard many great accounts of the Gage before I finally got the chance to visit and stay. The history of the architect is fascinating, and the hotel resembles several other notable west Texas hotels. The lobby was classy and inviting, and the staff incredibly professional and friendly. Our room was perfect. The gym had absolutely anything you could need, and the pool and grounds were immaculate. The hotel bar is fantastic, and there are several other watering holes a stone's throw away. To top it off, for a cat lover, there is a resident feline named "Squeak" who seemed to take to me. This place is truly legendary, and we would love to visit again.

Yelp
Really enjoy this place! Out in the middle of Nowhere West Texas, it's a perfect jumping off place to visit Big Bend and a even better place to land after spending a day visiting the Park. The place has a real cool bar called the White Buffalo, and a fantastic restaurant called the 12 Gage. Try the Quail and the Rib Eye and you will not be disappointed but my dining companions had the fish and they were happy too! Go figure! No TV's, but with the pool, the bar, the restaurant, the open fire pit to visit with other travelers and of course the big sky, you don't miss the tube! It's every Texans obligation to visit Big Bend at least once and this place makes it a lot more fun!

Yelp
On a recent stay, we reserved the Casa Jardin suite and couldn't have been happier. The check in was flawless and quick. We then drove over to the gardens and our Casa. It was unbelievably romantic, beautiful, and enjoyable. It felt like we had the entire gardens to ourselves. The room was huge and the bathroom incredible. Right out the porch were distant views on one side and a lovely entry to the phenomenal Gardens. This is just one special place that you should treat yourself and your significant other to.

A charming hotel and great restaurant with welcoming staff. I loved the Gage Hotel and recommend it.

Yelp
I took a trip to West Texas and we spent one night stayng at the Gage Hotel. Marathan is a small town and there's not much to see outside of this historic hotel. While it's pricier than other options in the area, it's worth the experience. First off, the property is beautiful. You'll definitely want to spend some time walking through the lobby, the outdoor patio, and the hotel bar famous for its prickly pear margaritas. DMX had just passed when I was there and they played some of his songs which was just perfect. The rooms similarly have a lot of character and they're clean. Within walking distance from the hotel are several restaurants and the Gage Gardens. The gardens are are a picturesque spot to take a stroll, play some putt-putt, or relax in nature. Service was lovely throughout and I would definitely return. Alpine is only a 20-30 minute drive away if you'd like to explore a more populated town while you're in the area.

Yelp
I've not stayed here, but I've visited numerous times and everyone I know raves about the restaurant

Yelp
Nice property, nice rooms in the courtyard. Some have fireplaces, specify if you want one. Ribeye at the Gage restaurant is wonderful and chick fried steak is fork tender. Huge portions. Modist wine selection is adaquate.

Yelp
Where to begin?! I could write an entire book on the majesty of this hotel. For years now, the Hotel del Coronado has been my favorite, with nothing else coming close to it... until I stayed at the Gage Hotel. Let's begin with the staples: cleanliness, great scents filling the air (like cozy fires for one!), friendly staff, beautifully-maintained grounds, and an all-around atmosphere of comfort and tranquil relaxation... they've got it all down. But they don't stop there. With fluffy cloud-like sheets and mattresses, and a rain showerhead in the stone-tiled doorless shower, it was equally as difficult to get out of the bed as it was the bathroom. From the unique ceiling to the soap scents, every sight and smell transported you to a place of calming bliss. You've really got to see the rooms for yourself, as I could literally praise every piece of furniture and decor they chose. Next, we move on to the restaurant and White Buffalo bar. I ate a trost salad, which was so good I could've eaten two of them. However, the little jalapeno corn bread appetizers... I required far more than two. Those things could win awards! I ended up taking a box home with me and wished it could've been a truckful, since that box was gone by late morning the next day. Choosing a cocktail will be one of the most difficult tasks you face on your stay here. I went with the Sally Rand (pictured) and like the jalapeno corn bread, I could've had a truckful more. It was one of the best cocktails I've ever had, and believe you me, this lush knows her cocktails. Every damn last drink sounded incredible, and I'm sure they all are. I'd get a different one each time if I lived nearby! In conclusion, and to be perfectly honest, I wish they were closer to the coast and rented apartments along with rooms, because I'd move here in a heartbeat just for the Gage. I've said it many times before and I'll say it many more, but this is the ULTIMATE in "treat yourself"!

Yelp
This was such a cool hotel! Loved the accommodations except the fact that there was practically 2 inches between the 2 toilet doors so it was not at all private. Shower was odd. Needs to be managed a bit better. Bar staff was fairly rude, as well as front desk girl when I asked a question (maybe on her phone?). Housekeeping really needs to be more discreet- I didn't like getting up in the morning and they are just relaxing over in chairs by rooms (waiting to clean?) with their many carts. It was off-putting. Otherwise, I would stay here again because it is a beautiful property and that outweighed the surly staff!

Yelp
Gage Hotel is our favorite place to stay when we go to Big Bend National Park. Everything about the Gage is first class: the facilities, The areas with the fully stocked fire pits and fireplaces, the rooms, the restaurant, the gardens, the little park across from part of the hotel. It is all amazing and worth every penny of the price. We had a bucket of beer and a charcuterie board in our room when we arrived and it was such a wonderful addition to our stay!

Yelp
Our second trip to the Gage Hotel in Marathon, Texas this week was over Memorial Day. Last year we stayed in the Los Portales part of the hotel and loved it. Very rustic, quiet, next to a beautiful courtyard with a tranquil water feature in the middle. Very relaxing, no TV and no telephone. This year we are at the Casa Jardin house, off property 2 minutes from the hotel itself next to the 27 acre Gage Gardens. Although it was very nice, we will probably request the Las Portales room with fireplace next year. Either accommodation is exquisite and worth the price. If you're looking to check out Big Bend National Park, this is a great base camp location.

Yelp
Staff was nice, and liked that the hotel was themed. They also have 3 hotel restaurants to choose from - a bbq, a regular and a high end dining place attached to the hotel. Rooms and beds were overall comfy- there's a sink in the bedroom. The showers are public and you're given robes to walk to and from the areas. There are a lot of picturesque waiting areas as well as areas to just chillax. If you travel to marathon , more than likely you're traveling to relax or hike so it's perfect for both - with many small mom and pops around that are walkable. The ceilings are thin so you hear everything and the doors have slight openings at the bottom so you smell everything as well but it's a true Texan experience!

Yelp
I am completely shocked and blown away at the fantastic experience we had at The Gage. Upon arrival, I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Santiago, Sky and Sienna. WOW! They are an incredible front desk staff. Those sweet, kind, friendly and helpful faces were exactly what we needed after a long drive. You know what they say about first impressions Especially Santiago... His personality and vibe is so positive and he radiates happiness to everyone he is in contact with. The hotel itself is just incredible. The style, designs, decor... the food, the drinks, the pool area, the game area... just amazing. We stayed at the Wedin House. I absolutely loved it! It was spotless clean and smelt so good. Cozy beds, great showers, temperature was incredible in the house. Loved having the ice machine for my drinks Loved the porch and the stars at night were just ridiculous! Amazing amenities. Adrian and Taylor made some amazing drinks in the White Buffalo Bar and were so helpful and sweet. Holly was our server at the restaurant and was absolutely amazing. She is a fantastic server.... So refined and classy. Justin was equally as amazing and was like flash lightning when it came to getting a drinks refilled, plates cleared.... Anything! Just a great dinner experience at the 12 Gage. We LOVE staying at hotels and have traveled all over the country and this place and the staff are definitely in our top 5. Amazing vibe. Amazing hotel. Keep up the work and we will be back soon. Erin Krampitz

Yelp
I can safely guarantee you that the Gage Hotel is by far the best hotel in all of Marathon, Texas. If given the opportunity, stay the night here. When you do, you're certain to have nothing but the most magical experience.

Yelp
First trip to far West Texas. Had heard and read so much about this hotel. It's a grand old property that has been well restored. The 12 Gauge Restaurant was only offering outdoor seating due to COVID. At 104 degrees, no thanks. (That's out of their control.) The V-6 Coffee Shop was good and Brick Vault BBQ was terrific. We did not use the pool...it was filled to their limited capacity. Looks very nice. You have to drive an hour to Marfa or Fort Davis mountains from here...an hour and a half to Big Bend NP (which was closed due to COVID, as well as the McDonald Observatory and nearly all restaurants and galleries in Marfa). It's an hour and 45 to Presidio. This location is just not very convenient to the major attractions of the Big Bend region of Texas. Not sure the amenities of The Gage outweigh the relative inconvenience. For the price per night, we could stay at The Gaylord in Dallas, Big Cedar Lodge near Branson or The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. It's a great consideration for a anniversary weekend, etc. I just don't think it's the best "gateway to Big Bend". It's definitely worth doing at least once.

NonDiegan R.

Yelp
Such a pleasant surprise! The hotel is a little oasis, the perfect break from the long drive through Texas. The front desk staff were outstanding and made the stay just that much better. The property is beautiful, the restaurant's food is delicious and the people are so nice. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I don't get it. There absolutely nothing special about this place, save the nice staff. Rooms are average, nothing special at all. They're clean, that's it. The shower had little water pressure and it took forever to get hot water. The pool area was basic. The pool itself didn't appear clean so I didn't get in. The bar was nice. The barman was helpful and friendly, but he really lacked proper training. Again, the staff seemed very nice. They were helpful but the reality is that the hotel is nothing special at all.
google avatar

Janet S.

Yelp
A great Oasis and treat before Big Bend, make the most of it, there is no more good food after this. Comfy beds, nice patio space and fire pit.
google avatar

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place but I just can't give it 5 stars. First night we stayed at Portales room and we killed at least 20 or more mosquitos. Next morning we noticed the maids were cleaning rooms with doors left wide open so that explains it. For almost $300 a night this is not worth it. The next 2 days we decided to move into historic hotel part. Rooms were good enough. The front desk people definitely need some people skills training, as their faces and attitudes display their unhappiness to be at work. I do love the decor and grounds are stunning. Pool was great and food at the Gage was excellent. I would most likely give this place another try due to this and maybe next time we will be greeted with a smile.

Abby L.

Yelp
The main hotel and grounds are beautiful. We stayed in Captain Shepard House located within walking distance. Our stay was less than pleasant. The house and furnishing need updating. The bed and pillows were uncomfortable. There is a private bath but its down the hall. The house has seen better days and isn't insulated very well. The T- stat is set on 72 and it gets a little warm at night. There are no TV's other than the one in common living area which we couldnt watch because we never could find the remote control. The restaurant and bar were very nice and the staff was amazing. I didn't think the room standard met the cost for the room. Ill opt to stay somewhere else next time.

Yelp
We stayed at the Gage hotel for one night. We chose room 10, which is supposed to be haunted. Unfortunately, we saw no paranormal activity. The room was very comfortable, decorated well, and the bed was super comfy. The hotel itself is beautiful and historic. Everywhere you look there is something interesting to study. They have a ton of places to sit and take in the West Texas vibe. I wish we had more time to stay.
google avatar

Yelp
Is this a 5 star hotel ? No it is not but it is very nice and historic as well as a pretty cool experience. We stayed in Marathon so we can make day trips to Big Bend. My husband and I traveled with our 4 year old and 1 year old. First thing, they did not have a crib when we put when we booked that we needed a crib, that really sucked because it's a safety concern for a baby when we were under the assumption that they provided that. If we knew at booking we could have made arrangements. Once I over looked that "insert eye roll" the hotel itself is beautiful, rustic, and cute. Our room was nothing spectacular but it was cool with the cowboy western vibe. The room was clean and sheets felt soft. The grounds of the hotel are very well kept and we came after a heavy snow so that was cool. I'm sure the hotel is beautiful during the summer when the pool is open. The problem we ran into was good dinner options at 5pm. The hotel restaurant was not open till 6 and the cafes around only provided breakfast and lunch. That left us Mexican , bbq or pizza. Well the pizza place is closed now and we had the Mexican the night before and it was not good so that left us bbq. I know that time is early but we are on kid schedule. Other than that had a comfortable stay. Just keep in mind about you few options to eat.

Yelp
We ducked into the White Buffalo after a hard day's travel and relaxed to a couple of Gage Hotel Ranch Waters. Y'all that Ranch Water is the best I have ever had. The bar is quintessential West Texas and I loved every second we were there. The bartender was engaging and friendly as we chatted abt Ranch Water variations. The time we spent in the White Buffalo was nothing short of West Texas magic. Conversations were being had over delicious fare and the decor was rustic and chic making for a pleasant visit. We plan to make it back before our departure. Y'all... when in Marathon, run... don't walk to the White Buffalo. You'll be delighted... I promise.

Yelp
We stayed at the courtyard rooms at the Gage. The room is lovely. It's very quaint. There's a fireplace in the room. You'll need it in the colder nights. There's no AC or heating in the old part. Be sure to go to the White Buffalo Saloon. They have the best margaritas I've ever had. Also, really great steaks.

Yelp
This place does it right. It is incredible. My wife and I spent the last two nights of our West Texas Honeymoon at the Gage Hotel. We stayed in one of the Los Portales rooms. Their was a minor hiccup during check-in, but they were friendly and apologized with a free bottle of champagne. The room was great and really had a good west texas vibe, while also feeling luxurious (just doing the boutique hotel thing exactly right. My only critique is that the room was a little cluttered, but that is a minor critique. The hotel restaurant was absolutely fantastic, the spa was incredible, the bar was charming and full of friendly people, and the coffee shop does its job. I was also pleasantly surprised by the pricing at the restaurant. You certainly had the option to splurge, but you could also get very reasonably priced wines, and the entrees were a great value. I will revue the restaurant separately, but since there aren't a ton of options in Marathon,TX, I thought it was worth mentioning that the hotel restaurant is excellent and reasonably priced for what it is. Lastly, we were traveling with pets, and it is nice that the hotel is legitimately pet friendly rather than pet tolerating. When we checked in they gave us dog treats and there were more in our room waiting for us. We have well behaved dogs that we were able to let off leash in the courtyard, and other guests seemed genuinely enthused about saying hello to them. Also, it is just a short walk to Gage gardens which has a very large area for off leash dog playing. All-in-all, we had a great experience.

Yelp
Yall. This little spot is what dreams are made of. It has such a warm nostalgia in every aspect. If your an old west fan, you need to get your hunny and snuggle up at this sweet little hotel. They have a lovely staff and restaurant with the best food in town. Right down the road across the street they have an adorable little garden venue which includes a putting green and small pond area. Perfect for pictures or a picnic with the family. There is a fun play area behind the hotel with sand volleyball, horseshoes, and lifesize chess or checkers. Go have a visit for yourself!

Yelp
What a beautiful West Texas boutique hotel! We came for New Years Weekend, and had an amazing time. The hotel is absolutely beautiful, and has a great restaurant and bar attached. We had spa appointments but they were cancelled due to the individual being ill, but the General Manager made it all better with her exceptional communication and customer service skills, and the bottle of nice champagne she bought us for dinner that evening. It is truly a little slice of heaven, we can't wait to go back next year!

Yelp
Burn my luggage, I ain't ever going home. *spits in spittoon* This is my favorite place to stay. It is one of the closest hotels to Big Bend National Park. It is beautiful and comfortable, steeped in West Texas history. Yes, I wear a cowboy hat and say "pardner" all the time when I'm there. *Note...if you click the Gage link and look at the photos, they are all from my vacation.* Built in 1922 by a banker who needed a convenient place to take care of business with ranchers and what not--the main building has been restored. Additional space has been added and you can tell by the photos that they did a great job maintaining the old west theme. YES IT HAS A POOL! My daughter loves the pool with the fountains, something most bed and breakfast/historic hotels lack. After hiking in 107 degree heat at Big Bend...you want to swim in a pool, trust me. Prices start at $86 a night for your basic room with no bath, in the old hotel--remember we are talking 1920 folks. However, for those with more luxurious needs like a shower they have added baths to many of the rooms which go for $108. And for folks who need a little more they top out between $230 and $363 a night for suites and cabins. All are beautiful. We had a nice blue room with a bathroom (shower and all) in the main hotel. Service is amazing. Hotel has a bar and restaurant, both serving great food. The restaurant is top notch, though mini-me enjoyed the nachos from the bar (no, she did not go IN the bar, I got them to go.) Hmm...I guess since it's the old west, she could have gone in the bar, she is almost 12 years old now. Heck, she could probably be slinging whiskey and playing the piano.

Yelp
Finally made it here on 02-13-17. Definitely disappointed. We booked the room with a kiva fireplace to a total of $284. Have wanted to stay here for years. Check in went well. The room cute but not out of this world. The grounds were nice. Were told we needed reservations for dinner. Apparently the other place in town closed that day. The dinner menu is sparse. If I remember correctly 5 items. The tenderloin $45 down to the chicken fry at $21 and additional sides $8. We had the chicken fry. It was good. Back to the room. The fireplace was not worth the extra charge. It was cold. The floor tile colder. The bathroom has a neat shower with pebble for the floor. It would have been nice to have some throw rugs. The bed was ok. No extra mattress padding or topper. The walls looked dirty in many places. I'm not talking smoke dirty. Marks on the walls by the table and in the bathroom. Dust is not chic. When I went to check out, no one asked about our stay. I did tell them about the room and all I got was ok. We will let them know.

Yelp
My favorite place to stay in the Big Bend/Marfa area. If you have the funds, it's much nicer than staying at the Paisano in Marfa, and it's much closer to Big Bend. Think: sparkling pool, your own adobe house or large room, a fireplace, comfortable, luxurious bedding, like being a cowboy who really made it. I've stayed in the main hotel, the bed and breakfast down the street, and the adobe apartments, and they're all completely worth it. The food in the restaurant is great. Trust me, you'll want to stay here after a long day hiking Big Bend or braving the desert.

Yelp
Serious, serious romantic or just great getaway destination in the middle of nowhere in south Central Texas. No, I mean REALLY serious, and really a long way from everything. I adore this place. How good is it? I live near Kansas City and I'm thinking of flying myself and my wife down just to spend a couple of days in the company of the folks that run this remarkable establishment. Why? The rooms are decorated tastefully in old-time cowboy decor. Not the kitschy, too cute type, but the kind that makes you go, "oh wow, this is really well done." The beds are comfy, the shower is massive and expertly tiled to match the western theme, and even the doors and windows make you think you're in an early 1900s bunkhouse, but with fine amenities and luxuries like, oh, heating and cooling. The lobby is a proper place to hang and read, watch TV or peruse the historical photos on the wall. The White Buffalo bar is welcoming, cozy, cool, and has great people serving drinks. One even gave us good hiking tips for Big Bend National Park, the reason we were there. The restaurant is a real dining destination as well complete with outdoor fireplaces, space heaters and a polite cat that shows up and is apparently adored by all, us included. The food is first-rate, the service the same, and they have a good wine list, one you wouldn't expect in a town that probably holds fewer than 500 people. Easy to see why this location has been recognized by Texas as a historical destination. Can't wait to return, and I didn't even try out the heated pool, the spa or the outdoor fire pit. Oh, and at just over $200 for this kind of luxury, a bargain in my opinion.

Yelp
My friend and I stayed at the hotel on 11-6-18 after checking in we were directed to drive around back to our room. It was so dark we both had to use our cell flash lights to see where we were going - no offer to help us- two older women. The room was rustic and cold. We went to the restaurant and the menu was mostly high priced steaks. It was late and I chose just the house salad and butternut squash soup. My friend chose the salad with chicken added. My soup was stone cold and when I asked about it was taken away and replaced with barely warm soup with none of the crotons or nuts. We went to the bar for a drink afterwards and sat at the bar. I overheard the bartender telling the waitress that they were substituting Angel(something) tequila for the Tito's. This was in one of their signature $17 drinks. She told the waitress not to tell the people, they would never know. I told here that was unethical and she shrugged. On the way back to the room I saw the Manager and told him about the drink substitution and he could not have cared less. Our bill for one night with dinner and one drink each was $362. The next night we stayed in the Hampton Inn in Alpine for $120 which included s cocktail hour and breakfast.

Yelp
As a family we've spent Thanksgiving here twice for a week each time. Let me first say that it is always a wonderful stay and we will be back again. Coming off of my second visit I only have one consistent complaint that keeps me from giving this place 5 stars. Front desk staff are out to lunch. I know it must be hard to find quality competent hospitality people in the middle of nowhere, but I hope they try harder in the future for the hotel's reputation's sake. Make sure to check multiple times to double and triple check your reservations for dinners, spa visits, rooms, etc. One person will give you the okay and then the other may not find it in the system, then the other will find it but for the wrong time and place. If you're uninitiated to this circus you'll probably be pretty frustrated. If you're thorough though, it shouldn't destroy the trip. Quick examples: Part of our party needed a wheelchair accessible room and upon arrival they weren't sure about what we were talking about until checking with other staff. The handicap room's front porch light was burnt out and for how dark it gets out there it was problematic. Also, that show that the grounds don't get daily facility checks. The lobby has a big fireplace and no fire in it. When I asked why they didn't have it lit the front desk attendant said she didn't know how to turn it on... Our Thanksgiving dinner reservations both years were mixed up. When we showed up to the dinner they didn't know we had a person in a wheelchair with us even though we made a big point of putting that in the reservation. If it was located in a city with other hotels on the same level close by, this kind of stuff would really hurt their attendance. I love the hotel, I love Marathon and it's location close to so many wonderful West Texas sights. I'm not saying don't stay here by any means, I'm just saying be prepared to be thorough when working with the staff. (Side note: Housekeeping was phenomenal and really friendly)

Yelp
One of the best weekend vacation experiences in Texas. I have only stayed in the Portales rooms, so I can't comment on the main hotel, although the lobby seating is awesome. Wish my living room was like that. The restaurant lives up to its hype - prepared beautifully and served with panache. The White Buffalo bar does lovely drinks and is especially nice when it's not crowded and you can chat with the bartender. Wedding weekends can get a bit hectic. The pool area is nicely done and a great place to relax. Take a walk across the tracks to the gardens - just wonderful for a stroll and a great place for an event. Note: this is an expensive place with beautiful, unique furnishings and excellent service. If you can't afford it, don't stay there and then complain that it is overpriced. As for nothing to do in town, that's the whole point! This is a destination in itself. I will say I wish they offered breakfast in the restaurant, as breakfast options are slim in town and the muffins offered in the lobby are tasty, but not good for people who prefer protein for breakfast.

Yelp
My wife and I recently stayed at the Gage Hotel and we were not impressed by the room. I later found out from the Hotel General Manager that this was one of four rooms not yet upgraded and remodeled. We enjoyed dinner at their restaurant; they welcomed our dog and we spent plenty of time in the garden across the way. It was a great place to stop on our trip. But the room that we had lacked some basic amenities such as a TV. It was also small and dark and the bathroom was a bit different to say the least. Bottom line is the Gage is a boutique hotel in West Texas. Excellent service and staff but a throwback as far as the rooms are concerned.

Yelp
The good: Clean, unique, good dining options, and front desk service was wonderful! When we checked in, late after driving 7+ hours on 11/23, she was so accommodating, asked repeatedly how she could help, and offered suggestions for dinner before I asked. I wish I'd gotten her name, because she's a gem. Loved the fire pit and game areas too. It was too cold for the pool, but that also looked great. It was chilly and windy out while we stayed, and I was afraid the room would be cold, but even with a drafty and rustic door, it was toasty warm. Loved all the decor. Free coffee and muffins in the lobby for breakfast too. The bad: Towels hanging above the toilet. Suggestions: Put a hook or two closer to the shower for towels. The shower itself is large enough for towels to be in it without getting wet.

Yelp
The White Buffalo bar had some excellent food. Very pleased with our oyster nachos, buffalo burgers and micheladas. We thought service was good although it was crowded. The whole place is too expensive but at least it was enjoyable and delicious!

Yelp
This hotel is amazing. Very nice rooms, decorated with Texan antiques and historical items, liked framed newspapers and paper ads from 19th century. You can completely experience a west Texan lifestyle. The restaurant and cafe were great, good menus, good coffee and great food quality. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Wonderful stay at the Historic Gage Hotel. Wonderful staff. The rooms are well appointed, a little small in size and no TV. nice dinning adjoining the hotel. Reservations are recommended. There are really no other choices available. The restaurant food was good but I thought a little pricey. I would recommend this place if price is not a concern .

Yelp
We have been coming to the Gage for 25 years, so obviously we love it. The rooms in the original hotel or the newer Las Portales are lovely. I prefer the original hotel rooms. They also have renovated several homes in Marathon that are near the main hotel that they rent - we have enjoyed those accommodations, too. The pool & grounds are gorgeous - so serene and plenty of areas to just sit and read, drink your coffee or take a nap. They have created cute areas to play yard games & the Gage Gardens are stunning! The fire pit area on cool evenings is a great place to enjoy a drink and a cigar. I suggest you bring your own libations - they do not have bar service anywhere but the restaurant & bar - so save some money and bring your favorite drink to have ready in your room. Also bring plastic cups for the pool. I like to stay for 3 or 4 nights to take full advantage of the relaxing aspects of this oasis - that way you can venture into Big Bend National Park for a morning ( I drive into Chisos Canyon and back in 4 hours) of picture taking and looking around. On another evening I like to drive to Marfa for dinner and in the way back view the Marfa Lights at the viewing area (break no your own chairs). The other evenings are for dinner at 12 Gage and Brick Vault in Marathon. They serve great breakfast and expressive coffees at the V6 restaurant next to the hotel. The hotel has excellent free coffee every morning. Just make sure you have plenty of time for relaxing and enjoying the Gage!

Yelp
An outstanding hotel, particularly given that it's on the northern edge of Big Bend National Park, which is a long way from any large or medium-sized city. The town of Marathon is very small, but this hotel provides big time accommodations, with some very nice people. The hotel rooms do not have TV's, so reading or other activities are the order of the day. Both on-site restaurants are excellent, though fairly pricey. The rooms are modern and comfortable. The bed in suite 10 is fabulous. We went to view the Milky Way and stars that one can't see from nearly anywhere else on the planet, but be sure to check on the days closest to a NEW moon, not a full moon, for star gazing. We'll be back.

Yelp
Wow wow and wow !!!!!!! The hotel, restaurant and bar "white buffalo bar" have been such an amazing place. I want to reach out loud and say that the hospitality they gave my friends and me was exceptional. Our broke down on the way to Terlingua and we had to wait in Marathon for a good 11 hours. The town and its people have been so kind and I want to share my deepest gratitude for their help. The WHITE BUFFALO BAR when heard about our circumstances went out of their way to serve us dinner considering the kitchen had closed for the night. We were fed with some fantastic warm bread and salads and the flavours were mind blowing. I want to say a big thank you for helping us out with dinner and full access to the bar while we were waiting. Having said that the manager, our servers had been incredibly curious and went beyond measures to ensure that we could hang out at the hotel's lobby while the car engineers were on their way. This place has surprised me and made me so happy that I WILL come back purely because of the kindness and hospitality. Guys anyone who is looking to spend a weekend and looking for a beautiful, humble and memorable expends the Gage hotel is your place. MUST VISIT for the whole experience

Yelp
Very lovely hotel near Big Bend TX. The hotel and restaurant are beautiful and a big surprise in the middle of lots of ranch land. Enjoyed dinner and service was excellent and they even had a guitar player from New Zealand who has been in States all of two weeks. If driving this way, be sure to stop for gourmet meal and lovely hotel. They take dogs!

Yelp
Los Portales I am not sure what people like about this hotel. I found the Los Portales rooms very undesirable. the shower looked gross I didn't even use it. the room is tiny and it felt like a dungeon to me. small windows, no tv, If you are looking for a place as old as the town this is the place for you, but not me!
