6 Best Day Trips from Barcelona, and the Itinerary to Know for Each | Condé Nast Traveler

"The Gala Dalí Castle is all about two people—eccentric Surrealist Salvador Dalí and his Russian wife, Gala. At its most sincere, it’s a private declaration of their unique take on love: there are plush velvets, lavish tapestries, a piano, and one exquisite painted ceiling consisting of birds, the moon and fantastically beautiful architecture. Gala is even buried in the basement’s mausoleum, dressed in red Dior. But it’s equally weird, too. Take the garden—which has sculptures of elephants with legs like mosquitos." - Gemma Askham,Jessica Benavides Canepa

I didn’t expect this place to be so fascinating. Castell de Púbol isn’t just a castle — it’s a quiet, haunting love letter from Salvador Dalí to Gala, and walking through it feels like stepping into a very private world. Púbol Castle, also known as Castell Gala-Dalí, is a romantic and mysterious Gothic-Renaissance castle located in the village of Púbol, in Catalonia, Spain. Its most famous chapter began in the 1960s when surrealist artist Salvador Dalí bought and restored the castle as a gift for his muse and wife, Gala. It was meant to be her private sanctuary, a quiet, secluded retreat far from the public eye and the chaos of Dalí’s fame. Out of devotion, Dalí agreed that he would only visit the castle if invited by Gala in writing, a rule he respected throughout her life. The castle itself dates back to the 11th century, with much of its current structure shaped in the 14th and 16th centuries. When Dalí acquired it in 1969, it was in a state of disrepair. He restored and redesigned it with his signature surrealist touch, blending medieval charm with eccentric artistic flourishes. Inside, you'll find whimsical furniture, cryptic symbolism, and even elephant-legged sculptures — all elements of Dalí’s unique artistic language. One of the most moving aspects of the castle is Gala’s tomb, which lies in the crypt that Dalí designed for her. After her death in 1982, she was buried there, and Dalí initially intended to be buried beside her. However, he was ultimately interred in Figueres, in the Dalí Theatre-Museum. Today, the castle stands as a museum and a quiet testament to their complex relationship — a place filled with beauty, enigma, and artistic passion. Entrance its just €10 and the best option is to book it online. It's not just a castle; it’s a love letter in stone and shadow, echoing the intensity of one of modern art’s most iconic couples. Well recommended 👌

One of the three museums of Dalí. A castle of love and Romantic. But finally only Gala slept here forever. Ticket: 9€ per each . Kids free.Free parking . A small town quiet and peaceful. Not very touristy. Recommend for a chill afternoon.

Relaxing contrast to museum in Figueres, but then it was Gala’s home not (at least until she died) Salvador’s

Hard to get there without a car. We took a commuter train out of Barcelona. Didn't realize we needed to catch a bus to the countryside and then walk to the castle. The countryside was beautiful. The staff at the castle was very helpful when we called for directions. Tour was very quick. It took us longer to get there than it did to walk through. Beautiful setting.

Very beautiful history about the life of this woman. You can also be here in the studio where Salvador made its latest works of art in this castle. The sober grave of Gala in a beautiful basement is recommended!

That’s a famous place which is mandatory for every Dali’s fan. It’s strange, exiting, weird, beautiful, shocking, interesting, mysterious, and unique. Don’t forget to buy tickets in advance. We visited it in December and there were a few people. But in summer there are usually a lot of visitors. The castle is relatively small so it’s better to plan in advance to visit with less people.

Fascinating place to visit with clear artistic history demonstrated room by room. Everything is well presented and maintained and the staff have a good knowledge when asked. The garden is suitably odd, it is important to walk around and look in all directions so you don’t miss anything. Fascinating place and well worth the visit.

Absolute jewel , 25 mins from Girona by bus, then 20 minute walk from bus stop. Well worth the journey. Fascinating insight into the Dalis. The walk down to the Chateau is worth the admission price. Beautiful setting. Don't miss this if visiting Girona.

Yelp
This is the home of Gala who was Dali's wife. The story goes that he built the place for her because she tired of the visitors to their home they shared. He had to get written approval from her to visit. The home was unique and very Dali but the gardens were my favorite part. Little surprises hidden among the trees and birds! You cannot take photos inside the home but are allowed to photograph the garden. This is chronologically the third stop you should take on the Dali triangle tour but I found time wise that it was best to start here in Pubol, travel to Port Lligat for Dali's home, and finish with the museum in Figueres. All three can be done in one day with careful planning.
