New Zealand's Rugged Terrain Is Easier to Access Than Ever, Thanks to New Lodges and Trails

"More recently, the Galaxy Boutique Hotel arrived on Lake Tekapo in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, where guests can sleep under skylights opening up to the stars."

When we booked the website portrayed an image of a fairly up market, contemporary ‘boutique’ hotel. On arrival our first impressions (and views) were unfortunately tarnished by bins and laundry sacks in the car park in full view. The rooms were of a fairly good standard, however some furniture was a bit dated and there were also items left not cleaned from under our entertainment unit including a disposable mask. Service was casual but pleasant enough. The breakfast was also a 3 out of 5, however they did do a decent scrambled egg. We wouldn’t rush back here.

The star gazing ceiling window is a gimmick. You get a tiny square of the sky through a window that may or may not be clear for a variety of reasons. Even with the bathroom window shuttered, the ambient light from the mirror (even turned off) is enough to leak light into the room. Then there are the parking lot lights that also leak in past the curtain edges. Just walk outside if you want to see the stars. On a clear night even with the porch light on you can still see an impressive amount of stars so why limit yourself to a tiny square of it behind some glass? The room itself is ok. Our shower door would keep sliding back open so I had to shower with my foot pushing it closed. Breakfast is nothing special but they do deliver it to your room which is very nice. Overall for the price: meh.

One of our best stays! Great view from the room. Room had a skylight and a huge bath tub as well. Breakfast to the room was very convenient in the cold weather and quite wholesome. Would be helpful if they provided some basic cutlery and bowls in the room. Good value for money for Tekapo

This hotel is a small boutique hotel with 15 rooms across two floors. The room we got for two nights was on the lower level, the same floor as the reception. The staff here are Malaysians, Taiwanese and other chinese speaking diaspora. Parking is sufficient and you can get beautiful unblocked views of the mountains and parts of Lake Tekapo. While it is not as near as other accommodation in the area to Lake Tekapo, this hotel is very new, very clean and very organised. It is just a short drive of about 3 minutes to the village centre I see about 80 per cent of the guests are Chinese - including Singaporeans, Hong Kongers and mainland Chinese. Special kudos to Jane and Ava (Malaysians on work holiday here) for their exceptional service when they were on reception duty. It helps that I was an ex Malaysian turned Singaporean so we all got along really well. They were friendly to everyone and I found out when they are on reception duty, they have to do everything, including serving breakfasts and handling room requests. My feeling is that this place is owned by an Asian, because all the staff are Asians and of Chinese descent. All staff speak fluent English, Chinese and even Cantonese! Kudos to the management of the hotel, I would definitely recommend this place to all travellers to Tekapo

I booked a Single Deluxe Room for a day, and it was a very comfortable stay. The hotel is in a great location in Tekapo, peaceful with nice views of the lake. The room was spotless, with excellent cleanliness and all the necessary amenities provided, including complimentary bottled water. The skylight above the bed, which gives you the chance to stargaze right from your room – though you’ll need a clear night sky to fully enjoy it. The staff were warm and welcoming, and they took our order for breakfast upon check-in as we opted for in-room dining. Breakfast was delivered promptly and was nicely prepared. Parking within the premises was convenient and hassle-free. Overall, a stay with thoughtful touches that made the experience memorable.

Excellent stay! The hotel was super clean and very well maintained. The staff were friendly, warm, and always helpful. Breakfast was good to start the day. The location was also great for stargazing — a real highlight of our stay. Highly recommended!

The rooms at Galaxy Boutique are well appointed and spacious. Our room has 2 bedrooms, a living and kitchenette area, and a large bathroom. The primary bedroom and living room have large windows facing the beautiful Southern Alps and Lake Tekapo. The town is small, so it's easy to walk to the shore or to take a drive around the lake. On Wednesdays, there is a local market with Thai food, pizza, lamb tortillas, chicken skewers, desserts, coffee, and other offerings. The Galaxy Boutique hotel is convenient to all of it. Service has been good with housekeeping straightening daily and ample breakfast. If we returned to this area, I would stay here again.

I booked the Deluxe Lake View Room and the room and view definitely made it worthwhile! It was a long drive from Christchurch and the hotel was like a pot of gold at the end of a gravel rainbow. When the staff opened the door and I walked through, my breath was taken away by the view of Lake Tekapo from the height of the room. I’m sure the staff enjoyed impressing me with the skylight as well. Sadly, it was a full moon and it was cloudy, so I wasn’t able to admire the stars that Tekapo is famous for. But the gorgeous contemporary rooms more than made up for it, and there’s also a bathtub from which you can look out at the lake. The staff were great, really cheerful and helpful even though a couple of them were still being trained. Breakfast: it’s basically fry ups where you choose how many pieces of tomatoes, bacon, sausages, hash browns, etc. There’s also continental breakfast in the form of bread (i believe there’s a toaster and jams), yogurt and bananas. There’s parking up front but seeing that there were some vacancies, the car park was already full, so if you’re driving, do take note. Cant wait to be back again for more nights!
