On the Grid : GFZK Museum of Contemporary Art

"The GFZK - Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst or Museum of Contemporary Art in Leipzig exhibits national and international modern art past 1945. The GFZK collection as well as alternating exhibitions and projects are presented in the GFZK Villa and in a separate award winning new building. Besides the exhibition space the buildings include a library and two hotel rooms designed by artists. Have a look on the website to book the rooms. The GFZK has a wonderful large, green and entrance free garden." - Das rote Paket

"GFZK Café (Baubau), Zentrum West. Attached to the Museum of Contemporary Art is a small café. Although located very centrally it has a generous green terrace and garden opposite to Johanna Park. Surprisingly, it is never overcrowded but visited by a relaxed and nice mixture of people. The café itself gets periodically redesigned by an artist. The current interior was designed by London based artist Céline Condorelli in 2014.The café offers cool drinks, nice coffee and a small choice of vegetarian tarts and cakes."

Museum of contemporary art is situated very close to the New City Hall in Leipzig. You can see a number of interesting installations about different relevant topics. The exposition is situated in two buildings. English speaking staff is friendly and helpful. A beautiful park with lake is situated crossing the street.

The GfZK offers usually two contemporary art exhibitions, sometimes more if they have individual small exhibitions running. The programs were very well-thought and well-planned. It’s really worth a visit if you around the neighborhood. Besides, there are also several events throughout the year including the summer festival.

An interesting place to visit, but a little difficult to interpret what you are experiencing at times. A couple of elements invite interaction in what is obviously an outlet for recent community-inclusive art practice, but you can only pass through the static renderings. Great garden and exhibition spaces. Worth the visit, but if you take kids be prepared to answer lots of questions!

Great little Modern Contemporary Museum with some impeccable art shows and student exhibitions.

Current exhibit is pretty small and underwhelming - July 2025.

A place for people that don't spend their lives devoting themselves to quality and pouring themselves into their works. I can picture Monet, Picasso, Michalangelo and all other artists turning in their graves, seeing two stools turned over each presented as art. How could anyone look at a hose pipe curled up, two chairs beside each other or a piece of cardboard with a bit of wire thrown on top of it, and call any of it art? It's an insult to charge people to see the nonsense here. It is not art just because you call it that. A chair is not art by simply being a chair. If I had knocked over the chair it would be more artistic than what was presented. You should only present works that people dedicated time to. Very poor. Laughable actually. There were videos played of art students praying over empty space and jumping around making faces, maybe they should spend more time making art. Toilets were nice though.
