A wonderful cathedral to visit, right in the heart of Galway, there is a colourful beautiful dome in the ceiling with many windows to let in the light with a purple glow. Many splendid columns support the wonderful arched wooden ceilings. The organ pipes are in a wonderful display surrounding a beautiful stained glass window. There are many beautiful stained glass windows to see. Many rows of great wooden pews that run the length of the cathedral and seem to go on forever. Entrance is by donation.

During my time studying abroad in Galway, I would pass by and stop in daily. I’d come in, light a candle, and say a quiet prayer. I’ve visited on weekdays and weekends. I’ve come for masses and novenas. I’ve prayed each time I walked through these doors. I visited the gift shop and found gifts to send back home, wooden rosary, cathedral slate magnet, postcards, and the like. You can find medals and prayer cards for different saints, bibles, journals, books for children, and gifts for sacramental milestones. This is a beautiful stone church with large stained glass windows, a very beautiful place. It was previously the site of a jail, so I’m glad I’m here on my own accord in its modern, Cathedral form rather than the former building. My photos show the Cathedral during various times of day, in all different lighting, some are very dark, others are further away overlooking from the river. You are seeing it in my photos through my eyes as I’ve seen in at all points of the day. This was the place I came when I needed to feel safe.

The most beautiful cathedral I’ve ever visited Galway Cathedral truly took my breath away. The architecture, the atmosphere, the light streaming through the stained glass — everything felt majestic and peaceful at the same time. Out of all the cathedrals I’ve seen, this one left the strongest impression on me. A must-visit when in Galway!

Must visit. Don't miss it. We just had a couple of hours to spend in Galway and it was cloudy and rainy. On a grey, cloudy and rainy Sunday in Galway, the cathedral feels just right. Its solid stone exterior blends into the muted sky, sitting proudly by the river. Inside, it’s a different world—stained-glass windows glow softly, even without much light, and the faint smell of incense mixes with the quiet hum of Sunday service. It’s calm, peaceful, and a perfect escape from the damp day outside. A great spot to pause and reflect.

Majestic , Serene & Beautiful! Wonderful place of worship and reverence! The organ, stained glass , alter, etc is just plain amazing. Wonderful history behind all of this as well. A definitely must see in Galway! Pictures don’t do it justice. You have to be here in person to experience and view its grandeur!

Very modern, but at the same time with a nod to the past with the building materials used. Very beautiful, peaceful and serene inside. A good place to stop, think, pray and contemplate.

BEAUTIFUL!! The artistry and detail are incredible. Stations of the cross sculptures are excellent. There aren't enough words to describe how magnanimous the cathedral is. You have to see it in person.

Google
Galway Cathedral is a beautiful, peaceful spot to visit. The inside is stunning, with its high ceilings, colorful stained glass windows, and a real sense of history. It’s not overly crowded, so you can really take your time soaking it all in. Definitely worth a quick stop if you're in Galway.

Yelp
An amazing stop in Galway. A beautiful church with vaulted ceilings and stained glass. Gorgeous environment. Light a prayer candle or sit in the pews.

Yelp
We needed to stop to use the bathroom so our tour guide stopped here. They did have a sign saying you had to drop money in a box to use the restroom but if it helps this beautiful cathedral it's worth it! The stained glass, vaulted ceilings, and the crucifixion mosaic were all beautiful

Yelp
What an absolutely beautiful cathedral! I attended at evening weekday mass here which was a beautiful service. I was in awe the entire time on how huge the interior of this church is. I was warmly welcomed by the other patrons when I attended mass. Everyone was so friendly. The church is gorgeous and it was a beautiful place to worship. There was beautiful places to light a candle and pray when in the church. I was able to write in a prayer in their prayer petition book as well. I would highly recommend coming to a mass here while in Galway.

Yelp
Galway Cathedral is one of the largest and most beautiful buildings in Galway. The 145 foot cathedral dome is a noteworthy landmark in Galway's city skyline. I wouldn't have guessed that this stone Renaissance style church only dates back to 1958, when construction first began. Visitors are welcome to tour the church outside service hours. Mass times can be found here: http://www.galwaycathedral.ie/liturgy/mass There is no fee to enter the church, but donations are welcomed. The Galway Cathedral hosts a series of summer concerts every year from July until August. Admission to each concert is €15, concessions €10. More information on the summer concerts can be found on this website: http://recitals.galwaycathedral.ie

Yelp
Galway Cathedral is one of the most impressive buildings in Galway. The massive building is symmetrical, and its two vaulted roofs intersect to form the shape of a cross. At the intersection sits a large green dome with a spire on top, pointing to the heavens. The architectural style is a mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance. As you enter the cathedral, your attention is swept upwards along the massive stone arches to the wood-paneled roof high above and to the interior of the dome where sunlight trickles in through narrow windows. Underneath the dome are painted angels that keep vigilant watch. The cathedral walls are constructed of heavy stone, and the floor is smooth marble. Ornate stained glass windows let colored light in from all sides. Sit in one of the many pews and enjoy the grandeur of this place and any meditativeness it evokes. Or sit in a room off to the side and watch a video about the history of this place. Given that elaborate churches in Ireland are typically hundreds of years old, it may be hard to believe that Galway Cathedral was built less than a hundred years ago, with construction lasting from 1958 to 1965. It was built over the site of a disused jail, which was sold by the county council to the church for a nominal £10. The total cost of construction and furnishing was nearly £1 million. This was one of the more memorable places we visited in Galway. Highly recommended for those who enjoy old world architecture.

Yelp
THE MOTHS DESCENDED!! We were happily crossing the road when suddenly we were surrounded by a SWARM of moths! Clouds of moth over the river smacked into our faces and bodies as we walked across the bridge, and I was afraid they would get into our mouths! The water was beautiful as was the view of the cathedral, but I am not excited about the moths!

Yelp
Beautiful Cathedral to visit while in Galway. As with most of the Cathedrals in Ireland, there is no fee's for tourists, so enjoy the visit and admire the great work of the Irish, but donations are welcome! I believe it is closed during mass though to tourists, so keep that in mind. The Cathedral is located near the center of town and is one of the taller buildings, so it is tough to really miss it honestly. It is located on a one way road, which can be a tad confusing I would assume if driving by the site for a visit. I spent about an hour inside admiring not only the masonry work, but the beautiful stained glass that surrounds the Cathedral. Another worthwhile stop while visiting one of Ireland's gems (Galway).

Yelp
Visited April 2015: "I believe it is the youngest Cathedral in Ireland" It is a one way street to get into the Cathedral, and,on the first try, our turn was block by a large tour bus. There was a fee to park in the parking lot, and to use the toilet. The Cathedral was built in 1965, so the architecture is fairly new, modern, but still has some classical cathedral appeal to it. There is a chapel with mosaic tiles of US President Kennedy. It happened to be the 50th Anniversary of the Cathedral, so there was a history wall about it.

Yelp
This was an unexpectedly stunning church. The outside is fairly unassuming, but the inside contains some impressive stained glass. Of interest to other Americans is a memorial to JFK. They have a really good shop, which many churches lack.

Yelp
You wouldn't guess from the outside how stunning this cathedral is from the outside, but when you go in it will easily take your breath away. The stained glass windows are stunning, especially when the sun is shining through them. There are lots of little sections of the cathedral worth checking out and it's in a lovely location, right on the water. It's huge as well, much bigger and grander than I expected. Great for photo taking opportunities!

Yelp
This cathedral is fairly modern. It is very spacious and the height adds grandeur and gravitas to the place. The cathedral is build out of a mid grey brick. It is very clean inside and outside. The furniture inside is classic cathedral fare - sold, stolid not glitzy, functional. Compared to many continental cathedrals the interior is decidely plain and indeed mundane. One of the more curious things about the cathedral is in the anti chapel north side of the cathedral. There on can see two stained glass windows of exceptional historical interest. There is an image of Padraig Aonrai MacPhiarias (did I spell that right?). He was the self-appointed President of the Irish Republic from 20 April to 26 April 1916 - I presume he tendered his reisgnation as President of the Provisional Government he surrendered his sword to General Maxwell. His initials are there on the window (PP) not his name. He is wearing an olive green Irish Volunteers uniform. John F Kennedy is also depicted on another window. Neither of them was models of Catholicism. Indeed Pearse was probably excommunicated automatically for being in the IRB.
