19 Wineries and Tasting Rooms to Visit in Sonoma County - AFAR

"A historic Russian River Valley estate first planted in 1900 and associated with early Italian immigrant vine-growers; today it’s known for exquisite, old-vine zinfandels. Tastings are conducted in a Windsor tasting room and celebrate both the estate’s heritage and its sought-after, small-production bottlings." - Bailey Berg, Tim Chester, Jessie Beck

I wanted to take the time to say thank you for an over the top wine tasting experience at the Gamba Vineyards & Winery.  When you combine over 120 years (Mike and Gus), not to mention six generations of wine making, it takes some time to tell the story and appreciate and enjoy the wine produced by these vineyards.  Both Guy and Mike shared their passion and knowledge of the entire process down to the final pour and taste.  Fortunately Suzanne made a generous purchase and we will look forward to future Gamba wines in our own wine room with friends in Tulsa.  We are forever spoiled by your time that you shared.  We look forward to a future return visit.

We learned of this winery at a tasting we went to in WI. Changed our view of Zinfandel wines. Was so impressed that we had to visit them in Sonoma . Again very impressed with the wines, meeting the owner and hearing the family history. Gamba's wine ambassador Mike curated one of the best wine tasting experiences we have had.

The most wonderful, pleasant, comprehensive, humorous experience! Michael (a winemaker/farmer/realist) was probably the best person we met in all of the vineyards we went to. I cannot stress enough that you MUST make the stop with Gamba vineyards and San Miguel. A private table with a private tasting.

Was looking forward to my visit and wondered if Gamba should be part of my future collecting plans. For this visit, the two of us were combined with large group that arrived just ahead of us. With limited seating, it was SRO, but we didn’t mind. The host had nearly enough tulip glasses, which are great for tasting Zinfandels. Arriving after the larger part of our combined group, we were happy enough to use narrower Bordeaux style glasses, although I can’t be certain that we didn’t miss something. The host focused on the simple question of whether or not we liked each wine as the main thrust of the tasting, and so we held our own sidebar discussion of each wine as we covered the five S’s. As a group, we also learned the history of the vineyard and the family that owns it. As a bonus tasting, we also tried the separate wine that is the product of the host (but not a Gamba wine). All in all it was pretty good.

Mike took great care of us! We sat with Mike under the patio and got to try some delicious Zinfandel. Excellent experience and beautiful property with smaller batch wines. You could tell that there is a lot of pride in the wine here. This was a highlight on our RRV trip. Thank you, Mike, for your kindness, storytelling, and knowledge about the wine!

We loved our experience at Gamba! During our visit, my husband and I loved tasting through the lineup of wines. We weren't as familiar with Zinfandel prior to our tasting, but we came away with a whole new knowledge and appreciation for the grape, and it has quickly become one of our favorite varietals! We especially loved supporting a small, family owned business, and are so happy to recommend Gamba to all of our friends who are visiting Sonoma County.

I'm excited to share and rave about our amazing experience at Gamba Winery! We truly felt welcome from the first call to schedule the appointment when they went out of their way to fit us in, to the moment we arrived, they provided amazing service. Gamba is a small, family owned winery and it is very apparent that they strive to provide a unique, educational and fun experience. Not to mention the wines are incredible! Make sure you ask to try the MCM Zinfandel which is from the estate vineyard planted over 100 years ago. What a treat to taste from such a historic site. A hidden gem in the Russian River Valley!

I don't usually write reviews, but this was an extraordinary experience! We had the best time at this small, family owned winery in Russian River Valley. Gus, the winemaker, is extremely knowledgeable and approachable. He was very generous with his time and knowledge about wine, as well as his experience as a seventh generation wine grape grower. The entire experience was so informative while also being relaxing and fun. Sitting among the 120 year old vines was amazing! And the wines are incredible. We started with a sparking and tasted through a variety of wines-Old Vine Zinfandel being their specialty- and ended with an amazing Cab. We had a group of 6 and we all agreed it was the best tasting of our trip. Can't wait to visit again and bring more friends to this beautiful winery!
