Gandantegchinlen Monastery

Visiting Gandan Monastery in this freezing weather was a challenge, but seeing the golden Migjid Janraisig statue made it all worth it. I feel a great sense of. I’m so proud that I made it to Gandan Monastery, even though it was -20°C outside! It was a peaceful and spiritual experience."

The main and biggest temple in UB and recently re-developed as well. Great atmosphere and I get incredible feeling of calmness and protection each time when I visit. Highly recommend the giftshop and store located inside the temple as their product well priced and fair value.

gandantegchinlen monastery in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, was originally built in 1835 which is Mongolia's principal center of Buddhist education. It was destroyed and rebuilt many times over the years. The major attraction of the monastery is the 26.5-meter gilded bronze statue of Buddha, which was rebuilt in 1996. There are multiple temples and assembly halls, and library within the complex. The entire place is very beautiful and takes about 2 two hours to visit it.

Gandan Monastery is really beautiful. The complex has lots to see and experience. I learned a lot about the history of Buddhism and Mongolian history and culture.

I’m here to say eat at the monastery coffee and tea shop and have the salty milk tea, and salty milk tea dumplings. So….good…and the ladies working there are so nice.

While they were asking for a small entrance fee to go inside the main temple, you’re able to wander around the rest of the complex for free which is great. It’s a super peaceful spot and the design of the buildings is great to admire. If you enter via the main entrance you’ll pass an extreme group of thousands of pigeons, which you may or may not find disgusting and scary! If it’s the former, fortunately there are other entrances to avoid them! It’s a site well worth taking the time to stroll through during a visit to the city.

Together with the Chojin Lama museum, this is a must-see visiting UB. Not really close to the center, this is a chaotic (for tourists and hundreds of monks) active temple, where the big ceremony assembly hall works close to historical temples refurbished and well preserved. If you have just few time, visit the Library (free of charge) and the main temple with the amazing 26-meter statue of Buddhist divinity (20.000 tugriks) . The rest of the complex is not mandatory.

The courtyard was under construction and the area was really dusty. We went to the main building but i decided not to go inside because apparently I gotta pay some amount and my cash has run out as this is the last place to visit before my flight. The area was big. We got stuck due to a sudden rain and sheltered in front of the buildings, i think for the students. One of the monk kindly let us in the study area away from the rain.
