29.Dec.2025 Had a good experience visiting the Gandhi Memorial Museum. The exhibits clearly explain Mahatma Gandhi’s life and India’s freedom struggle. Well maintained, peaceful, and informative. A must-visit place in Madurai for history lovers. This museum has a rich collection including British wartime weapons, Quit India movement photographs, and interesting science-related exhibits like preserved varieties of snakes and a starfish in a bottle. It also displays ancient Tamil (Thaligerai) scripts with the pen used, tribal artifacts such as stone weapons, sharp cutting tools, and traditional ornaments. I also saw Gandhiji’s samadhi where a portion of his ashes is preserved, along with a replica of Sabarmati Ashram (Ahmedabad). Overall, the museum provides deep and informative insight into Mahatma Gandhi’s life and India’s history. A very meaningful experience.

Gandhi Museum is a boring place 😮‍💨😴 if you want something exciting. Do not go on weekends 🚫🗓️ because you will miss many things 😄. But if you have a lot of free time ⏳ and want a quiet place 🤫, it is a good place to visit and relax 😊.

Located around 3 km from Madurai Railway Station Entry fee: ₹5 only, very budget-friendly Museum mainly showcases Madurai and Tamil history Displays include: Ancient weapons Decad / carved animal sculptures Historical artifacts related to Madurai region Inside views are good and informative for history lovers Lighting inside is poor, some exhibits are not clearly visible Washroom facility available, but very unhygienic and needs improvement Overall: A good place to learn about Madurai’s ancient history and culture, but better lighting and cleanliness are required. ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3/5)

Main museum is under renovation (it was supposed to have reopened by now), government museum is often closed depending on the day, and the only thing to see is a small exhibit on the Indian independence movement, a replica of Gandhi’s house, and a shrine that (supposedly) contains some of his ashes. Worth 30-45 minutes if you’re already in the area otherwise skip it - you can get the same information about Gandhi online quite easily. Also why is there a giant T-Rex at a Gandhi memorial? Seems a bit distasteful.
