The Best Hotels and Resorts in Asia: The Gold List 2025

"At Gangtey Lodge travel-weary guests are greeted with a welcome song so powerful it reduced our party to tears, a hot towel, sweet tea by the fire, and a five-minute massage. “We wanted to create something for the backpackers that now want a little more luxury,” says Khin Omar Win, who co-owns the lodge with husband Brett Melzer. Luxury here comes in the form of personalized meals but also silence, space, and a sense of being cocooned by the sweet-natured staff who anticipate your every need. 16 Small Luxury Hotels Around the World Worth Visiting

"Inspired by the region's historic farmhouses, this 12-suite Himalayan oasis cleverly blends traditional local design with luxurious modern amenities. Ornate woodwork, exposed beams, and Bhutanese-style pitched roofs are offset with freestanding soaking tubs, heated floors, and grand floor-to-ceiling windows that stare out to the expanse of the valley. Start your day with a pre-breakfast blessing and prayer at the 17th-century monastery followed by on-site cultural classes, including archery (Bhutan's national sport), before retreating to your room for a rubdown." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Gangtey Lodge is pure magic nestled in one of the most breathtaking valleys in Bhutan. With sweeping views of the Phobjikha Valley and an atmosphere that radiates calm, it’s the kind of place that resets your whole outlook. The food here is outstanding, thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and consistently delicious. Whether you’re tucking into a local dish or enjoying a Western-style meal, every plate feels like it’s been crafted with care. There’s no shortage of ways to explore the surrounding nature either. Scenic hikes of all levels are right at your doorstep and the peaceful setting makes every walk feel like something out of a storybook. The traditional stone bath and wellness treatments are a perfect way to unwind after a day out, authentic, soothing, and in perfect harmony with the environment. If you’re looking for a mix of luxury, culture, and nature, Gangtey Lodge delivers it all with quiet confidence. An unforgettable experience.

Beautiful lodge overlooking the valley of Phobjikha. Lovely libby and veranda overlooking the valley. Spacious rooms with bathtubs. Meals and house wine/spirits included. The food was amazing. First time i ate fish in Bhutan- and it was delicious. Kudos to the chef . Would have liked opportunity for sparkling wine and mimosa without having to purchase the entire bottle! For a 5 star luxury hotel over $1000 a nite, i would expect that sparkling wine by the glass (even if the entire bottle isnt subsequently consumed) , should be acceptable for the resort to offer guests five star service. I do not give the property 5 stars because i believe that it is extremely expensive/overpriced , even taking into account the view, service and inclusive meals. I would not spend the money to stay here again

Overall, breathtaking valley views, world-class warm hospitality, delicious food, and sense of place make this one of the best luxury hotels I've ever stayed at.||I've been to 43 countries, but I'll never forget Gangtey Lodge. It was the highlight of my entire week-long Bhutan trip (which says a lot because Bhutan is such a magical country).||As I was warned when I arrived, the only problem I'd have was that I booked for only 2 nights. I'd recommend guests to stay for 3-5 nights since for the rest of my trip I regretted leaving so soon.||Honestly, I have *nothing* bad to say about Gangtey Lodge.||This hotel is ideal for solo travelers, couples, or small families with older children who appreciate nature and spirituality. Still, I don't think it's a good fit for larger tour groups since the vibe is quiet and boutique, and there's less common space to gather.||I stayed 100% for free using 105k Hilton points per night via Small Luxury Hotels (SLH) and still got all the same included amenities of paying guests such as half-board. Just make sure to contact the hotel before booking with points since availability with Hilton isn't accurately displayed, which I think is an issue caused by SLH and Hilton's recent partnership.|||HOSPITALITY|The staff are so warm, thoughtful, and proactive in everything they do. From offering you a heated neck pad when you sit on the terrace, to singing a lovely welcome song, to lighting the fireplace and preparing the room for your arrival, there's so much attention to detail that you just don't see elsewhere.||The General Manager Gustini brings the utmost level of professionalism and thoughtfulness to the hospitality experience. She has elevated service to an art form. The fact that she has decades of hospitality management from Aman Resorts, widely seen as #1 in the world for boutique hospitality, clearly shows.||She also proactively connected me to the GM of another hotel I wanted to visit and is overall very informative and helpful.|||ROOMS|First of all, the valley views from the rooms are absolutely stunning. The fact that there's a bathtub outside the bathroom and next to the window really heightens the experience.||Overall, the rooms are so warm, comfortable, and cozy with the fireplace (that the staff will light for you whenever you ask), melding traditional elements with modern touches. The heated flooring was a very nice touch! There's a lot of really thoughtful design that went into the room layout.||I did have to do some work and take some calls, so the staff brought me a chair, and I worked from the bathroom counter. The wifi was solid, and while the setup sounds awkward, it was actually perfectly fine.||There's no separate spa area, but they'll do the spa treatments in your room. Since I didn't book any treatments, I can't comment on anything other than the complimentary 5 min. shoulder/neck massage they gave in the main lodge at check-in, which was a nice welcome.||There are 12 rooms overall spread across 2 wings (each with 2 floors) on different sides of the main common lodge area.|||DINING|As a vegan, Chef Bernard went far out of his way to attend to my needs, checking on me throughout my stay. While I never got to meet her/him, the pastry chef made some really tasty vegan cakes, cookies, and chocolates for me. I couldn't get enough of the avocado chocolate cake at breakfast - so good!||I don't drink alcohol, but I ordered a few mocktails, and they were all well-done and customized to have no sugar.|||ACTIVITIES|The included options of visiting the local shedra (Buddhist college) for evening prayers with 200 monks and playing traditional bamboo bow archery and darts were awesome. Special thanks to Tashi for leading these with warmth, knowledge, and patience.||I didn't get to try the mountain bikes or get dressed up in local dress, but I'd definitely do these things next time.||Also, I chose to do off-property activities with my own guide. Hiking through the serene valley, seeing the black-necked cranes (season Oct-Mar), and visiting the local monastery are must-do's. I'm sure Gangtey Lodge can facilitate all these activities and more if you ask.

You do not need to read this review .... it has all been said before me! I am unable to expand my comments beyond what has already been said. This is the most special hotel I have ever stayed in. As a first class hotel it is not ostentatious in any way. Quiet, wonderful service. Cozy rooms. Delicious food. Warmth and care from all of the staff. Spotless. Exceptional.

Gangtey Lodge was an incredible experience for us. The Gangtey valley is special and feels different from other valleys, it offers enough to stay in one location for a few nights and entertain yourself with small local activities. The lodge itself commands an incredible view over the valley, we can't believe the view we had from our bath tub in our room. The staff went above and beyond to ensure we had a great stay, and recommend taking a full board option, since all the food was incredibly delicious.

Epic views, fantastic service, insane food and an unforgettable vibe! Best of the best!|Thank you!|I would highly recommend this hotel and this area of Bhutan. It will quite literally take your breath away!|The staff interaction is also most welcome especially when the chef describes the dishes he has lovingly prepared!

This hotel was designed and built to provide top end accomodation, whilst at the same time merging into the location and embracing the local community. It succeedes in all respects.||The Gangtey Lodge and its staff provided high standards of accomodation, marvelous hospitality, excellent dining and all in a woderful location.||For the "adverturous" travellor wanting a "high end" experience this is a must. Don't miss out

The reputation of Gangtey Lodge proceeds your arrival. I had watched the BBC documentary on Best Hotels in the World before I left for Bhutan. The Lodge also features in the Conde Naste Gold List for 2025. As I walked through the door of the Lodge for then first time, I was wondering can it really be so good? Can the Lodge live up to it's reputation?||The answer is, yes it does! This is an experience that blends a love of the outdoors with a range of creature comforts that pampers and revives after a hike or trek. Traditional Bhutanese architecture with dark wood and densely woven textiles, meets a degree of minimalist chic and bright sunshine. ||There are three standout features. The first is location. The rooms and terrace face a fantastic view of the Gangtey Valley, a vast bowl surrounded by trees on the upper edges. The view begs you to explore further. To lace up your hiking boots and experience some pristine countryside. The second is food. Chef Chia Hwa Soh is a frequent visitor to the dining room and happy to talk at length about ingredients, recipes, the farm to fork ethos and importantly, how to eat well at high altitude. Her cheerfulness and enthusiasm really creates a warm vibe in the dining room. I found myself tucking in to buckwheat pancakes and chilli treats for breakfast, not my normal menu at all. The third feature is kindness. The staff are happy and the guests look happy. The attention to detail is ever present in the spa treatments, in the poems and stories left on your pillow at turn down, and in the snacks the chef prepared for my daughter every day when she was off her food. My daughter and I were charmed and we deeply appreciated and enjoyed our stay.
