The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Pompeii (Updated 2025)

"Tucked toward the back of Pompeii, this former vineyard contains 13 plaster casts of people who didn't escape the eruption, forming a grotesque and agonizing tableau that is both deeply unsettling and powerfully illustrative of the city's final moments." - Matthew Kepnes

The solemnity associated to being in the presence of (yes they are plaster casts of Pompeii citizens that were caught in the eruption) is deeply felt. These people had no hope of rescue or safety and their lives are cut short in an instant in time. Looking at photographs does not do them justice, but to stand in their presence is akin to the memorials of the Twin Towers, Hiroshima or a Concentration Camp from WWII. Recommend that you walk the streets of Pompeii and soak up the amazing work that has been done here to allow us to journey back 2000yrs in time to an actual Roman city, this is not a movie set…it is real! Save the Garden of fugitives until the end of your tour , it will bring the eruption and the loss into perspective.

DON'T MISS IT! The name given to this rural dwelling reflects the dramatic events that took place in its large vegetable garden. The house is situated in the area around the Large Palaestra in the vicinity of the Porta Nocera gate.More than any other, the scene which unfolds in the Garden of the Fugitives revives the full horror of the tragic death suffered by the inhabitants of Pompeii during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D.We can see the plaster casts of the bodies of thirteen people, among them whole families of young people with their children, who met their death while trying to save their lives by fleeing towards the town gates in the direction of the sea.

One of the most sad spots to visit when at Pompeii. I knew I’d see the outline of the people that perished, but it’s the children that really get to you. It’s very peaceful over here though, and quiet and beautiful. It’s definitely a contemplative spot.

OMG!!! This really brought tears to my eyes at the end of the tour of Pompeii Archaeological Park Garden. It's a MUST visit. The volcanic eruption aftermath has been preserved and exhibited here. A good place for children in school to visit for history.

It’s a fabulous place to visit. It’s quite large bring a comfortable shoes because it will be a long walk. I think you can finish it within 3 to 5 hours but don’t forget to get the audio guide at the gate. I think it will make your journey more fun
