Garonga Safari Camp, Makalali Game Reserve, Kruger, South Africa - Explore & Book

"Situated in the 22,000-hectare private Makalali Reserve, west of South Africa's famous Kruger Park, Garonga is a piece of heaven. From the moment you are greeted at the huge sculpted gates and admire the North African-inspired architecture, Garonga’s uniqueness is tangible. Hot towels refresh you after the dusty drive, and after a cool passionfruit cocktail, you feel life’s pressures melt away. All activity is geared to your timescales, not the camp’s. Head out on game drives, or just relax, snooze, sunbathe, daydream and be pampered all day long in the most tranquil and breathtaking of settings. The choice is yours. And for those seeking an intimate bush experience, 'sleep-out' excursions under the stars offer you the chance to sleep among the wildlife, as you wake to the sound of bird song and zebras coming down to the watering hole. As English owner, Bernie Smith, so rightly says, Garonga is a “safari for the soul”. Highs Garonga's unique candlelit outdoor bush bath and romantic sleep out treehouse provide memorable moments during which wilderness and luxury collideSmall, intimate, owner-managed safari camp with wonderful staff, expert guides and uncrowded, unhurried 'Big Five' game-viewingStylish half-tented suites with private decks and indoor/outdoor showers; elephants have been known to wander past...Seriously delicious food and blissful aromatherapy massages, reiki and reflexology sessions in the open-air sala You can book Little Garonga or the MCH tented camp for an exclusive getaway for up to eight Lows Unlike many of the top private reserves in the area, Makalali is fully fenced and not yet linked to the huge Kruger Park. Game viewing is good but slightly more limited, which is reflected in the lower pricesIn winter, night time temperatures can dip to 5C. Electric blankets are put in the beds, but it's essential to bring a woolly hat, jumper and warm jacket for early morning and evening game drivesIn summer, temperatures can soar and there can be significant rainfall especially Jan-Mar. The camp is closed throughout MarchWe have yet to see the latest addition, the MCH tented camp, in person but it looks wonderful" - Davina Mackail

From the moment we arrived at the reserve, we were treated like royalty. The staff were beyond lovely — so warm, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about making our stay perfect. Nothing was too much trouble for them; every request was met with a smile and the kind of effortless service that makes you feel completely at home.||The setting itself is breathtaking — a truly beautiful place surrounded by nature at its best. In just two days, we saw an incredible variety of wildlife: lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinos — you name it! Each game drive felt like a new adventure, and our guides were both knowledgeable and enthusiastic, sharing fascinating facts about every animal we encountered.||The lodge was spotless and beautifully designed, offering the perfect blend of comfort and authenticity. Sitting by the fire at night, listening to the sounds of the bush, was pure magic.||The food was lovely and there was always plenty of option. You will never have an empty belly that is for sure! ||I honestly can’t recommend this safari game reserve highly enough. It was an unforgettable experience from start to finish — five stars simply aren’t enough!I

From start to finish, our safari experience was absolutely incredible! We were lucky enough to see every animal we had hoped for — lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, buffalo, and so much more. Each game drive felt like pure magic.||||The facilities were outstanding — comfortable, beautifully maintained, and perfectly blended into the natural surroundings. Every detail was clearly thought through, making our stay both luxurious and authentic.||||A special mention must go to Bongi and Norman, our ranger and tracker team. They were exceptional — knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely kind people who went above and beyond to ensure we had an unforgettable experience. Their passion for wildlife and respect for nature really stood out. ||||The rest of the staff were equally wonderful — welcoming, attentive, and always ready to help with a smile. The service and hospitality truly made us feel at home. The rooms were warm at night however that is fully out of anyone’s control. ||||The only small downside was one staff member, Nathan, who unfortunately came across as arrogant and somewhat disrespectful toward other staff. It didn’t spoil our trip, but it was noticeable and out of place in an otherwise incredibly warm and professional team.||||Overall, this was a once-in-a-lifetime safari that exceeded every expectation. We left with amazing memories, stunning photos, and deep appreciation for everyone who made it so special. Highly recommended — we’d return in a heartbeat!

This little gem was awesome! With a capacity of only 6, it was very intimate and quiet. Service was excellent and the food was spectacular! Our guide and tracker were very experienced and found lots of animal sightings. Drinks around the fire pit before dinner was relaxing and set the stage for the wonderful outdoor dinner setting. The owner of the camp stopped by one morning to introduce himself and the camp manager stopped by on our last night and sat with us around the fire pit sharing stories. Highly recommend this camp!!!

Fantastic safari holiday that I would recommend to anyone. Location and accommodation were both excellent, staff were all fantastic and in particular our daily guides/driver Finius and Trevor and organiser Jordan. Food was terrific. Would recommend the Star Bath! Would also recommend the "Sleep Out" which was an adventure, despite the thunder/lightening and downpour which led to Nathan coming to our rescue! But still a great night. Well done to everyone. x

I had an unforgettable safari experience! The entire staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming and always ready to help with anything. The rooms were very luxurious, spotlessly clean, and we didn’t miss a single thing.||The safari with Roy & Nathan was definitely the highlight of our stay – please send them my greetings and best wishes!||A big thank you to the whole team for making our stay so special. I wish all of you the very best.||The food was absolutely worth it as well. The cook clearly knows what she’s doing every meal was delicious!||||I would highly recommend this place and would love to come back!

This was the DREAM of a lifetime!!! From the initial airport landing with our driver waiting for us, the 1st impression, the stellar A++ service, each and every staff member that we engaged with and the AMAZING chefs that prepared the most AMAZING food EVER was mind boggling. And then the safari adventures!!! OMG!!! Life altering experience!!! I am still pinching myself to make sure this was not a dream!!! We were able to see 4 of the "Big 5" and we will never be the same!!! Words cannot adequately describe this experience!!! Our hearts are full!!!

We had the most amazing time at Garonga, it really exceeded our expectations in every category. The room, location and food were all fantastic with beautiful views out to the watering hole from the main deck (we saw elephants bathing whilst eating lunch!) I think what made Garonga so special was both the staff and the boutique experience with other guests, with only 6 rooms you really get to know all of the other guests which was really lovely. The staff were all great with a special shoutout to Colin who kept us safe at night, but our drivers Phineas and Trevor were the standout. As well the knowledge and tracking skills, they were just such great people and extremely fun to spend time with (you spend 7 hours a day with your drivers so this really matters!) Overall we couldn’t have wished for a better stay and would highly recommend. Thank you to the team!

Wonderful 5-night stay with Feral Air bush plane transfer from Johannesburg. |Shout out goes to our driver/guide, Nathan, and his smiling tracker sidekick, Roy. What a team! We sighted 11 animals including 4 of the big 5 the first day. The whole staff were wonderful and since there are only 6 rooms it was easy to get to know and share stories with the other guests. The watering hole right across from the camp was a big plus for animal viewing. Heartily recommended!
