We visited Gascona after seeing the high ratings, and while the prices were reasonably fair, we unfortunately left feeling pretty disappointed by the overall experience.
The biggest issue was the lack of guidance when ordering. We ended up with three starters: battered shrimp, croquetas, and battered chorizo (which said fried but we did not expect battered), which were all heavy, deep-fried dishes, served on the same bed of crisps, and with the same sauce in the case of the chorizo and shrimp. It was a shame the waiter didn't step in to suggest a more varied selection.
The service felt a little erratic, but perhaps that is my naïvety towards Spanish culture. Our main dish, the Arroz Gascona, was placed on the table while we were still eating the starters, and then served to us 10 minutes later, again while we were still eating the starters. The rice itself was too salty, and the veal inside was tough with unrendered fat. Plus, the shrimp weren't deveined, which felt like a basic detail the kitchen missed.
Our server was a nice man and clearly working hard, but the bright lighting and the overall hurried feeling made the atmosphere uncomfortable. The decor was lovely but not used to its potential. We were also a little put off by the direct request to leave a review, which seemed to prioritise managing their rating over ensuring genuine satisfaction. We hope the restaurant can tighten up the kitchen quality and service consistency, as it could be a great spot.
