The remainder of the portal of what once the walled Ciudad Vieja 😎😎😎. Today, it’s the “Arch of the Plaza Independencia” a rather poetic entry into a very historical place in Montevideo.

Historic gate to the old town of Montevideo. The park behind it is fantastic as is the mosuleum beneath the statue

Montevideo was a nice stop on a cruise that due to weather was extended to 3 days! I enjoyed the free walking tour that was both educational and entertaining. the city bus tour was more of a “footballers” thing. They love their history of the sport and the politics. two days were good, the 3rd could have been a beach day in season!

I liked the fact that after some other locations the gate finally was reconstructed here, only a few steps away from its original place. I also understand why one had to reinforce its stand-alone situation with a wall. What I don't understand is, why it was turned around as it's now rather giving exit from the Old Town instead of leading into it. Maybe because of the nicer view over the Independence Square to the Salvo.

Historical monument at downtown Montevideo. It marks the old entrance to a fortification, the citadel, from which the city has originated three centuries ago. It’s now a remarkable place to know, but nonetheless a short visit to take pictures and a walk by the square.

An intriguing attraction with government offices and a beautiful square. I would recommend it to individuals interested in the history and culture of the region to visit and discover more.

It's really fun with a ton to do and see. Just about everything you're looking for you can find within walking distance. Everyone is extremely nice around here. It's a great place to relax during the summer.

I took a highlights tour from a cruise ship, but this is easy walking distance from the cruise ship on the Rambla. I walked to a square called Constitution Square, visited a beautiful church, and continued walking to a place called the Prado Museum. It's through the old town, plenty of shops, and replicas of paintings from master artists. At the end is this gate. I understand it is what's left of the fortifications.
