Walking through the Puerta de la Ciudadela feels like stepping through a portal between modern Montevideo and its colonial past. It is a stunning, massive stone archway that serves as the perfect entrance to the Old City (Ciudad Vieja), and passing through it really gives you a sense of the scale of the original fortifications.

The remainder of the portal of what once the walled Ciudad Vieja 😎😎😎. Today, it’s the “Arch of the Plaza Independencia” a rather poetic entry into a very historical place in Montevideo.

Montevideo was a nice stop on a cruise that due to weather was extended to 3 days! I enjoyed the free walking tour that was both educational and entertaining. the city bus tour was more of a “footballers” thing. They love their history of the sport and the politics. two days were good, the 3rd could have been a beach day in season!

Historic gate to the old town of Montevideo. The park behind it is fantastic as is the mosuleum beneath the statue

Historical monument at downtown Montevideo. It marks the old entrance to a fortification, the citadel, from which the city has originated three centuries ago. It’s now a remarkable place to know, but nonetheless a short visit to take pictures and a walk by the square.

An intriguing attraction with government offices and a beautiful square. I would recommend it to individuals interested in the history and culture of the region to visit and discover more.
