Where to Try Columbus-Style Pizza in Ohio

"Serving Columbus-style pies since 1952, this Clintonville neighborhood shop emphasizes a crackling crust, a savory-leaning sauce and housemade sausage sliced into old-school sheets. A 50/50 provolone-mozzarella blend and local Ezzo pepperoni that curls into crispy cups contribute to a signature texture and sound—customers are urged to ‘hear the cut and feel the crunch’—while the current owner describes himself as a custodian of the place’s traditions." - Wendy Pramik

Since they moved from their original home on High Street over to Indianola, Gatto’s has been consistently crushing it every time I have been there. It’s easily one of the Top 5 best pizzas in Columbus and I would stack their crust up against anyone in the business. If you love classic, tavern-style pizza made fresh from quality ingredients and the real deal pepperoni toppings, this is the joint for you. Quite simply it doesn’t get much better than this. Start with the salad and homemade dressing and get yourself a couple of pies. Their distinctive sausage is unbelievable and is made in-house. Decorated with a fascinating array of old pictures detailing their history, this new location is indeed very special. God bless you Gatto’s pizza!

This was our first time here this evening. First impression as soon as you walked in was an unfriendly staff just looking at you, not personable at all. Thank goodness the pizza was good! The staff needs to drive to Jeni’s on High St where we went afterwards to learn customer service skills from the Jeni’s staff.

Google
Gatto's is our new favorite pizza place. Pizza , subs, and house salad is consistently excellent. Our friend also tried the spaghetti and meatballs and said they were really good as well. The food quality, prices and friendly staff will keep us coming back.

PIZZA WAS SO GOOD it didn’t even make it to the final destination. Definitely will be back for more!

Decided to try Gatto’s. There were a few patrons there when we arrived. We sat at the counter, but there were plenty of tables. The one thing you will notice from pics—they have no beer glasses! So my husband drank from a plastic tumbler. But I had wine, and they had wine glasses. The girl at the counter was the server and the cashier, and she was too young to serve alcohol, so she had to call one of the cooks from the back to get us drinks. After sitting there for a while, we couldn’t help but notice the amount of carry out and delivery orders they do—there was always someone in line waiting for an order. I ordered a veggie sub and my husband ordered a pepperoni pizza—pepperoni under the cheese. It was a traditional Columbus-style pizza, and he liked it a lot! My sun was loaded with veg and was served on a sub roll from Audino’s Italian Bakery—very good. It was a light bread with a crunchy crust—nice accompaniment to my veggies. Would have loved to order a salad, but they only came in pint and quart deli containers—meant for to go orders. I could had spilled it onto a paper plate, but didn’t want that. I would like to go back to try wings, spaghetti, lasagna. But will probably get it to go, because I’d prefer not to eat on paper plates.

Nathan is absolutely amazing! Every time I come in, he’s friendly, professional, and always goes above and beyond to make sure everything is perfect. Whether it’s taking my order with a smile, making sure my pizza is fresh and hot, or just creating a great atmosphere, Nathan is a standout employee. You can tell he genuinely cares about the customers and takes pride in his work. If every place had a Nathan, the world would be a much better (and tastier) place! Highly recommend this place, and a huge shoutout to Nathan for making every visit awesome!

This pizza spot next to my son’s daycare has the best big slices that always come with a drink! The service is super friendly, and the vibe inside is so welcoming. It’s become my go-to after a long day. 🍕✨

Yelp
What a surprise. First time visitor and will be a very long time customer. The pizza was so delicious. I ordered double pepperoni and wow! Tasty sauce, delicious cheese and great pepperoni. Cooked to where it was crunchy, the way I like it. I can't wait to be back to try their subs and other toppings.

Yelp
Man, I'm not sure that I like Gatto's. Most of the reviews are positive and mention that the pizza is good, and the pictures look appetizing. For me, it's just missing something. We ordered a plain cheese pizza, a pepperoni pizza, boneless wings, and cookies from Gatto's through the uber eats app. Shout out to the delivery driver for getting it to us in the crappy weather! And to the restaurant for making it on time The pizzas looked good when they came, however they tasted just okay. The chicken nuggets were packed with flavor and the dipping sauces supplied were very tasty. The cookies are pretty good as well. I don't think I'll be ordering from here again, I'm more partial to a foldable slice.

Yelp
My grandma used to order Gatto's for delivery; it was her preferred pizza shop. I remember it being good pizza. Now I live in their delivery area, which I found out last night while craving pizza. I ordered while at a wine shop and thought I had plenty of time to make it home. They were actually earlier than stated but we were able to meet up after a few calls. It is even better than I remembered. The thin crust is so flavorful. The toppings and sauce are perfectly blended. When I heated some up the next day on the stove, it tasted just as good as it did freshly delivered. I'm so glad I can now have this wonderful pizza on a regular basis.

Yelp
Was popping into 451 Spirits but arrived 20 min too early... noticed they were directly next door to a true pizza shop that looked like it had interior dining so we decided to stop into Gatto's Pizza and get a pie while we waited. Was happy to see it was open on Sunday as the website say it is not. We went inside to check it out. The good: There is a dedicated parking lot in front of the shop (That made things even easier). Inside we were hit be an amazing aroma of garlic and pizza cooking. The girl that was running the shop greeted us with a warm and friendly hello. The place appeared spotless. We decided, yes, this was a good idea. We placed an order for a small sausage, onions and peppers and since they make their own meatballs... a meatball sub! The not so great: The meatball sub looked amazing. It was cooked perfectly. However the cheese tasted a bit too processed and the meatball really didnt have stand out flavor. Was disappointed. I next tried the pizza. Crust was crispy. No soggy parts. That was a huge plus but the u underneath was inconsistently charred almost burnt in some places like the oven needs to be calibrated. We were suppose to have peppers on it... she forgot them. The homemade sausage had no flavor at all. We ended up asking for some extra sauce and doctored the pie up with table parmesan cheese and a whole lot of red pepper. It wasnt the worst pizza we had but it wasnt the best, either. I so badly wanted to have this place be a five star for the dining room, location and cute exterior... but it fell really short food wise. I would say collectively it is almost a 3 and I can't even give them a full 3 stars. We both felt strongly that the food just had no flavor at all.

Yelp
Stopped in today as we started this year's Columbus pizza trail and found a hidden gem. Very nice, clean pizzeria in the Clintonville neighborhood. Very pleasant staff who took time to explain their options for their pizza. We got a pizza with house made sausage and onions, and a meatball sub with house made meatballs. They also make their own sauce. You could tell the staff cared about their food and service.
google avatar

Andrea W.

Yelp
Had these at a party - tried the sausage & pepperoni as well as pepperoni & banana peppers, both really tasty! Quite oily but a good amount of ingredients on top, and the crust was thin and almost crunchy. Good amount of cheese without being too much, liked the pepperoni!

Renee C.

Yelp
Food is horrible and service is terrible? They should be ashamed! Closer the door!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Located on Indianola with a large parking lot.  There are some tables inside for seating but ordering online and picking up was a breeze. Their pizza is what you would call Columbus pizza style, thinner crust and cut into squares. The crust was crunchy and nice but I did feel the pizza could have used a little more sauce so I would order extra next time.
google avatar

Stu F.

Yelp
Not cracker thin but a definite crunch to the bite. Great flavor and ratio of sauce, crust and toppings. Overall better than many pizzas at home in Chicago Really tasty pizza but really setup for carry out

Yelp
We've gotten pizza from Gatto's 4 times now. We love the crunchy crust, the choice of pepperonis, and the easy way we can always get different toppings on each half (1 mushroom hater and 1 pepper hater in our fam). We like that we can get a bottle of wine delivered too. Also love their garlic bread and salad. Haven't tried their entrees yet, but will soon. I have not been able to successfully use their online order system for delivery. Not sure if it's me or them. Anyway, I always end up having to call and they are just so super nice that I think I'd just rather call anyway!!

Vi C.

Yelp
Tried Gatto's after my Boyfriend said it is his and his families favorite pizza place. All I can say "Please stop using canned mushrooms on your pizza!!!" I'll give another review once this error is corrected.
google avatar

Yelp
I placed an online pickup order. I ordered a large pizza with pepperoni and mushrooms, along with a side of garlic bread. My order was ready at the scheduled time and pick up process was problem free. The pizza was hot when I got home. My dad and I both enjoyed the pizza. Cheese, toppings, sauce and crust were top notch. I will likely be a repeat customer.

Yelp
This Gatto's Pizza moved in to where the old Wildflower Cafe was, and I've finally given thus place a try! I ordered online and picked up; it took about 15 minutes later to be ready than stated, but they seemed to be very busy with lots of to go orders. In addition to ordering food and desserts, you can also order beer six packs which was a great discovery!
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
Gatto's is still doing a great job after 50+years and a move to their new location. We had a classic pep and a made-to-order veg. We loved them both. Local beer choices and an ok wine list added to the experience. Heavy to go business but the sit down people, like us, was slow. We are fans!
google avatar

Jaclyn C.

Yelp
One of the best pizzas in Clintonville! Perfect ratio of cheese, toppings and sauce. Thin crunchy crust. Lovely little old school Italian pizzeria. Staff was friendly and quick with service. Allows alcohol delivery and carry out as well as a small bar inside.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Pizza joints should advertise that their mushrooms are from a jar. This way people like me would just stay clear. Gattos has an okay pizza, but there's nothing that separates it from any other chain restaurant in Columbus. They claim their sausage is made in-house, and admittedly it is good, but other than that the rest is pretty standard and definitely not worth the extra cost.
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
My favorite pizza place ever. We've been eating gatto's pizza for over 20 years. It's just damn perfect. I like pepperoni with cheese, extra sauce, well done. Do it!

Yelp
We got takeout from Gatto's over the weekend. Menu is straight to the point -- 12 or 14 inch pizzas, add toppings and viola. We ordered two 12 inch pizzas, one with just pepperoni, the other with half pepperoni, half sausage, onions and green peppers. Also got a side of cheese garlic bread because it was only $3.50. Food was ready in a timely fashion and was still warm when it was delivered. Honestly, the pizzas looked pretty dang good and I liked how generous they were with the toppings. However, their pizza just didn't do it for me. The crust was too soft (I prefer a little crunch) and the flavor overall seemed pretty bland. The cheesy garlic bread was pretty good though and I was surprised at the amount for how cheap it was.
google avatar

Yelp
Old school family-owned pizzeria in Clintonville neighborhood of Columbus. I grew up in Columbus so this is my second craving when I'm home (first is obviously White Castle hamburgers). A 12-inch pepperoni is my favorite. $14 for this pie. I love that it is cut into squares. The crust, the sauce and the pepperoni is just perfect for me.

Yelp
I think I found a new Clintonville pizza place with delivery. Gatto's moved into the old Wildflower Cafe location on Indianola. They set up some patio tables and have a great bar and some tables inside. They offer dine-in without table service. Walk in, order at the bar and grab some paper plates and napkins and wait for your food. It won't be long! I visited on a Friday evening (ok, late afternoon, we were early) with a friend for a low-key night out, and they delivered. We ordered drinks and went outside for a while, no pressure from the bartender and she kept our tab open, which was nice. They have a couple of beers, 6-7 wines ($5/glass), and a couple of flavors of White Claw. That's it, but it covers the bases. We had a salad and some cheesy garlic bread. The salad is nothing fancy, but it was really good - probably because it's liberally salted, but really hit the spot. Iceburg lettuce, olives, some pepperoni, cheese, peppers and house dressing. Great side for pizza night. The pizzas had a generous amount of toppings and came out hot and fresh on the little silver baking pans. Dine in was relatively quiet when we were there, but the delivery drivers were hopping.

Colin A.

Yelp
Best sausage in the city! Order a sausage or pep/sausage/banana peppers is my favorite.

Mark M.

Yelp
The pepperoni and sausage pizzas were very tasty, along with the house salad. We'll be back!

Yelp
Outstanding pizza with a friendly vibe First time at new location Pizza was outstanding Homemade sausage is really good

Yelp
It was another "Family Pizza Night." Every time we do pizza night, I try to find a new spot that we haven't been to. This place was not the original spot that we were going to acquire our pizza from. The first place stopped taking orders and closed early; I asked the owner if there were any other good spots close by. I was told to check out Gatto's, so I ventured there. I showed up and Gatto's and asked the guy slinging the dough if they were still taking orders; he told me they were. We had a great conversation about the proper sauce to cheese ratio after placing my pepperoni and sausage order. Customer service was on point, and I got my pizza relatively quickly. My pizza was cooked to perfection. The pizza chef informed me of the history that Gatto's had with the Rubino pizza family and that the pizza was similar, and he was correct. Gatto's pizza had that thin cracker-like crust but not as light as Rubino's. The pepperoni and the housemade sausage were fantastic. The sauce to cheese ratio was on point and had a lovely sweet to savory balance to it.
google avatar

Adam T.

Yelp
14in pepperoni well done. Classic "Columbus style." 15 minute delivery so it wasn't really hot anymore. However, had to get a bite right away. It didn't need to be hot to tell this was some damn good pizza. Loaded with pepperoni, all of which had a ton of flavor. Good crunch, a little more firm than Tommy's for comparison. Sauce is not sweet, good flavor, not overwhelming. Cheese had good flavor even if it wasn't hot. I didn't even see a need to heat it up because it was so good as it was....also I was shoveling into my mouth too fast to heat any up. All but five pieces left after I finished.
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this much hyped about pizza. Ordered an extra cheese, extra sauce, olive pizza. Unfortunately even with ordering extra sauce it still needed more sauce. The crust was ok.

Kathy S.

Yelp
I can't attest to the quality of the pizzas because I bailed out of their order form before ordering. FIrst of all, there was no option to pick up the pizza I could find...if there is, the website needs work. Secondly, I tip at the door and the form included choices of tip amounts and "other". When I chose "Other" it estimate 7 bucks and change for the tip so I could not tip as I chose. Sorry Gattos. You may have an outstanding pizza but your business model is not what I want.
google avatar

Yelp
Gatto's is a pretty solid pizza spot in Clintonville. I've lived in and around Clintonville for awhile, but it wasn't until recently that I gave it a shot. I went with a pepperoni, banana pepper, and mushroom pizza. I was a huge fan of the crust on the pizza, but the sauce seemed to be lacking some flavor to it. It was just a little too bland for me. Another knock on them was the mushrooms appeared to be canned, so I don't know why they would used canned mushrooms, because I think it really distracts from the rest of the pie. I ordered some wings too that were just okay. The hot sauce was pretty much Frank's. The chicken was cooked well, and they're oven roasted. Like many pizza places though, they just aren't crispy by the time you get them back to eat them. I finished them off, but I don't think I'd get those again. Overall, there's a lot of great pizza in the area, so they have heavy competition, but they've been around for almost 60 years, so they're definitely doing something people like. I'd order the pizza again but would leave off the mushrooms.

Yelp
This was the best pizza I have had in a long time. I do love Massey's Pizza, but I will have to make more room in my heart, and my guts for another. We got the classic pepperoni pizza with the classic pepperonis which are on the smaller side but frickin' tasty. I honestly have been over the tired pizza game in this city with the likes of Donato's disgusting pizza- see my review on their pizza- and the big chain pizza places that put quantity over quality. This pizza from Gator's was delivered through our friendly neighborhood delivery app hot and delicious. That is saying a lot given how far of a trip it took to get here. There was no soggy pie in this box. Thin crispy crust covered with a sauce that reminded slightly of Ange's Pizza without the excess grease or oil or whatever you call that orangish-colored lubricant that soaks into the box after 10 minutes. The crust was a tasty thin slightly cracker-like crunch to the outer edge the way Donato's used to be back in the 80's and early 90's, when they were good, before they sold their product to McDonald's corporate overlords who then taught the company how to make an inferior product for a premium undeserved price. No rubbery textured dough like Pizza Hut and Domino's seem to have that feels like the physical texture of those weird intrusive creepy thoughts you get when you seen a memory foam pillow and wonder if it feels like a marshmallow in your mouth... . Really, Not one of you has ever seen a fresh memory foam pillow and thought, "mmm, s'mores!"? Be honest. This is a judgement free area. Dealing with Gatto's is way easier than the lousy service over the phone with questions I had for Grandad's pizza on the east side where their manager started belittling me over an open line in the background for me asking about the coupon I had that wasn't dated. Because of that interaction my family and the company I worked for removed them from our list of places to call. My call this time was just a basic: "What's the difference between classic pepperoni and regular?". It was refreshing to have another choice for great pizza in this town that doesn't taste worst than a cheap pizza from the frozen food section at the store. A surprisingly good pizza from an area that I would never have taken a second look at when driving by, and clearly hadn't even though I have driven by so many times. I plan to order from Gatto's again in the near future for my next pizza night. Maybe see how they stack up against my usual Massey's Pizza order of a Pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, bacon, and green pepper pizza. The thing is a beast from Massey's so I hope for similar from Gatto's on my next order.

Yelp
Classic old school Columbus Pizza,,,if you know pizza When it's cash only,,,you know it's usually pretty good....Gatto's was GREAT!,,,great service Crust was outstanding with a good sauce and cheese

Yelp
They don't deliver 2 minutes away (linden), "because it's not in our area." Yet delivery to Upper Arlington .(12 minutes away) I don't like it! I'm guessing that I-71 is the Mason - Dixon line.

Yelp
GREAT PLACE for pizza, food or a drink. Wonderful atmosphere, friendly staff! I've eaten her many times & the food has always been great ! Eric

Yelp
Gatto's is the new pizzeria that moved into the old Wildflower Cafe location. It's a cute, but small building that really does give you the feeling you will be eating at a mom and pop establishment. There is also a small patio out front where you can enjoy your pie. However, they don't have a liquor license that extends to the patio yet so you will have to hug the building if you want to enjoy an adult beverage. The biggest drawback to Gatto's is the place seems very understaffed. The lady who took our orders was trying to juggle doing 20 things at once and seemed flustered (although still very friendly). Keeping the understaffing in mind you will most likely be waiting awhile to get your pizza. It took mine about an hour to arrive at my table. The pizza itself was pretty tasty. I'd describe it as a slightly better Donatos. I guess the question is if you want to wait the extra time for a slightly better pizza when you could get Donatos in about half the time.

Yelp
My favorite pizza to order for delivery. Love their thin crust pepperoni pizza. I think their meatball sub is one of the best. Great Italian sub too. I order both well done.
google avatar

Diane H.

Yelp
Gattos is my favorite go to pizza place on Sunday nights. Love the new dine in option. Employees are great. Highly recommend. 5 stars
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Disappointed. Placed order for a small pizza, cheese, pepperoni and sausage. They could not find my order. After waiting 35 minutes I did receive it. The shop seemed very disoriented and way to much horsing around in the kitchen. Customers complaining that there order was not ready or recieved the wrong pizza or salad. When I got home, the pizza crust was like uncooked dough. Like it was stale?. Or gooing?. But what was really a disappointment was the pizza was burnt. The sausage pieces were hard. Desperately need a manager. The store looked very clean and attractive. Just need a manager.
google avatar

Steve L.

Yelp
I'm still giving 5 stars ONLY due to the quality and flavor of your pizza. Here's my feedback: GIT RID OF THE WINGS ON YOUR MENU. I was appalled at the size quality and result of the wings. They were soggy, mushy, and lackluster. It's obvious they were baked. You'll piss more ppl off by those wings that will never come back to your restaurant, than by not selling wings at all. Even though I love your pizza, I won't be trying anything else on your menu. Don't want to waste my money. ‍
google avatar

Joseph D.

Yelp
I don't even know where to start, First time I ordered from this place was last night, Ordered the salad , wings and 2 pizzas and this place was beyond amazing , As I stood there and talked to the guys there you can tell they really care about there food and u rarely find that at other places . I tell u the food from the crust the toppings the sauce beyond great. I took pizza the next day for Lunch and instead ate it for breakfast amd even great cold . Keep up the great work guys ....
google avatar

Yelp
They were very gracious and accommodated a very rowdy group of 7th and 8th grade boys! The pizza was delicious and the space is lovely! Thank you Gatto's for a great meal!
google avatar

Nissa A.

Yelp
We ordered Gatto's for the first time last night. We expected a salty crust, maybe something a little greasy... but NO. The crust was nice and crispy (we ordered well done) and we were not inundated with salt YAY. We could actually taste the items on the pizza without being overwhelmed with sauce. The sauce added to the flavor rather than overtaking the pizza. Thank you Gatto, you are our new favorite. I see why you've been around since 1952!

Matthew P.

Yelp
The pizza cleansed me of my sins and let me see beyond the beyond, the service felt like my own mother was taking care of me, and the mood is quite nice, oh and the other food is excellent

Robert M.

Yelp
"Oh we're busy give us an hour for the pizza" guy was kinda rude when I went in there too. the pizza itself, bad, real bad. Chewy on the bottom crunchy on the top no flavor just all around a bad pizza

Michelle S.

Yelp
I really love the pizza, and the folks who work there are so nice. It's the type of pizza I grew up eating in Columbus (thinner crust, pieces cut in squares). They use good ingredients and the pizza is delicious! They used to be in a smaller space on High Street; I love that the new location on Indianola has seating!
google avatar

Amber S.

Yelp
This is the first meal I had when I moved into the neighborhood. About a month after moving in they sent a menu and a coupon. They do deliver but only accept cash and check. There are a few tables and chairs but I don't think of this as a local eat-in pizza place. I think most of its business is delivery or carry-out. The crust has a nice bite to it and the pizza heats up well the next day. The mushrooms are canned but the sausage seems to be handmade and sliced lengthwise. I stick with the classic pepperoni which is small and curls up nicely.

Melissa B.

Yelp
We are LONG time customers of Gatto's and LOVE this pizza. We ordered delivery through door dash for a family birthday party. We ordered 2 medium pepperoni pizzas. With tip we were charged $30. We received only 1 pizza. When i called Gattos to report the missing pizza, they apologized and said it was their mistake and they would send a replacement in 30-45 minutes. An hour later,1 I called back and spoke with the owner. He said for me to "take it up with door dash" and hung up. They weren't even going to let me know they weren't sending a replacement! Sadly they have lost my business.

Yelp
Yo, this place is a hole in the wall! Small restaurant with a fan blowing to cool it off from the ovens. Cheap price, AMAZING Salad with garlic and clearly home made dressing. Garlic bread with cheese is cheap and legit. PIZZA? NEXT LEVEL I found my new pizza joint #ClintonvilleForever
google avatar

Bob D.

Yelp
Always a solid clintonville pizza option. Just solid, every time. Thin crispy crust, fresh toppings.
google avatar

Alex F.

Yelp
Consistently good thin-crust "Columbus-style" pizza with reasonable pricing and fast/friendly staff. You can't really go wrong. I recommend Pepperoni, sausage, and banana peppers. Cash/check only, so be prepared for that!
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
I read that this place has the best meatball sub in Columbus. It definitely does not. This was like eating dry dog food on crusty bread. The wings were awful, the sauce was straight up Frank's red hot with nothing else added. I'm interested in trying the pizza sometime, but I will definitely not be having the meatball sub or wings again.
