The Best Hotels in Spain, From Malaga to Barcelona

"Just the sort of place you always wish you could stumble across, down a dusty track on the way to the bluest sea. Here are three hidden-away, architect-designed angular houses, Can Aire, Can Mar, and Can Terra, each with a handful of rooms. They feel like small apartments in the smartest imagining, with shaded private terraces for hand-delivered breakfasts of freshly baked bread and sticky jams. The three Madrid-based owners hunted and hunted for a property in Formentera, having fallen for it on holiday, but it took them two years to find anything remotely workable. And then, fortuitously, the German owner of this plot decided to retire. Orange, lemon, and olive trees were planted to soften the surrounding fragrant scrubland, a swimming pool was put in, and they called on designer Paty Pombo for her modern-vintage take on island style. Rattan peacock chairs now sit alongside rough-hewn wooden swings, railway sleepers take shape as bed platforms, and woven-straw and rope-strung lamps decorate the corners. It’s a textural riot. Ferns pop out of mini planters and baskets of dried garden lavender make the air sweet. As in Puglia, prickly pear leaves hang like decorations against the outside walls. The white-white sand of Migjorn beach is a 10-minute walk away, and the path leads straight to Kiosko 62, a ramshackle beach shack with sensational sunsets and strong Mojitos. There’s no need to venture any further. Book now at Booking.com Book now at Agoda This article was originally published on Condé Nast Traveller UK." - Lauren Burvill

This was our third stay at Gecko (after eloping here last year!), and we still absolutely love it. The vibe is chic yet relaxed, with genuinely friendly service that never feels over the top. The food and cocktails remain some of the best on the island—while not the cheapest, they’re very much in line with local prices. The pool area and lawn is stunning, and having direct access to a beautiful stretch of Migjorn beach is such a bonus. When the sea was flat, we also used both paddle boards/kayaks provided by the hotel. We had a wonderful honeymoon in a corner suite with a private terrace and mini pool, we felt like we had our own little oasis. The hotel is also perfectly located near some great restaurants (we loved Can Marti and 190 Pasos) and enjoyed long walks along the beach promenade. Breakfast options are varied with warm dishes ( eggs benedict etc) and a cold continental-style buffet with fruits, meats/cheese, pastries, bread etc. There were enough options for us to try something different everyday. We celebrated our honeymoon with a private romantic dinner organised by Shauna and Lourdes in the hotel's garden and we had an amazing time. They carefully decorated the table and put together a delicious menu for us. Definetly the highlight of our stay. A big thank you to managers Shauna and David for looking after us once again, Flor at reception, and all the beach bar and restaurant staff for being so attentive : Nacho, Raúl, Lourdes, Gonzalo, and Diego. We’ll definitely be back!

Pure magic. Had read some of the mixed reviews and almost didn’t book Gecko but am still thanking God that I did. This hotel left me in a daze; the property was pure bliss, huge lawns, plentiful pool chairs and bali beds, no “minimums” for the best ones, beautiful dining room with amazing food, and best of all INCLUDED beach chairs right on the most sandy stretch of beach on Playa Migjorn. I visited a few other areas of Migjorn and many of the other hotels “on the beach” are really on rock and coral beds, not sandy parts. The room was confortable and well-appointed, balcony had a great view even for the basic room. The staff were probably the best part, especially the head waiter in the restaurant and front desk staff. They greet you by name and remember your room number, they make you feel like a regular who has returned home. I cannot recommend this property enough. Front desk will also reserve pool or beach chairs for you if you ask the night before but I had no problem getting one at all even with the hotel full. The beach chairs being right on the sand and included for hotel guests (contrary to prior reviews) was really a huge bonus!

A fantastic beachside retreat with true boutique charm. The atmosphere at Gecko Beach House is relaxed yet elegant – perfect for anyone looking to unwind in style. The location is simply stunning: right on the beach with panoramic views of the turquoise Mediterranean. The rooms are beautifully designed with a clean, minimalist aesthetic that matches the calm island vibe. Every detail is thought through – from the comfortable bedding to the natural lighting and subtle decor. We loved waking up to the sea breeze and falling asleep to the sound of waves. The outdoor pool area and lounge spaces are immaculate, and the staff provide a top-notch service without being intrusive. Breakfast and dinner were delicious, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients and Mediterranean flavors. Whether you’re here for a romantic stay, a peaceful solo escape, or simply a few days of digital detox, this is one of Formentera’s best-kept secrets. We’ll definitely be back!

Very small rooms, we had to put our suitcase on the balcony! The service at breakfast was not good. The staff are lovely but inexperienced and you wait a long time for any ordered food/drinks which often came wrong. The location is good but you need a car.

Sadly a negative experience with disrespectful treatment by some staff members and a non-friendly vibe towards children. We are staying at a hotel nearby, and came for breakfast two days in a row. First time, they wanted to charge full-price for my two year old for the breakfast buffet although she had only had a couple of bites from my plate. Thankfully they took it off the bill. However, the next morning when we came back for breakfast again, we were told by the waiter that they were full and could not give us a table, and that there was not enough food (the restaurant was two thirds empty and the buffet was full…). I politely questioned that, and was then given a table by the manager. However, the waiter then said aloud in a nasty tone in Spanish (twice) “todos aqui son criados” - which means: everyone here is entitled/spoiled. I calmly confronted him about it as I speak Spanish and understood what he said, and he ignored me. I told his manager and she acted as if I had misunderstood what had been said. I explained I knew very well what that saying means, upon which she responded by saying that the staff are very stressed. It was a very disappointing experience and we will not be coming back. You would think that given their prices they would be able to provide a better and more professional service. Sadly that was not the case for us :(

We cannot say enough wonderful things about this hotel. The location is quiet and right on the beach. Our room was beautiful, chicly-designed, and had a terrace with a view of the pool and the sea. All staff were exceptionally friendly and eager to help - with dinner reservations, general questions, and even provided assistance when we had an issue with our rental scooter.||The buffet breakfast which was included in our room rate was absolutely delicious and contained plenty of wonderful options, including meats, cheese, fruit, and pastries, as well as a variety of egg dishes made to order. Coffee was also excellent. We had lunch at the hotel several times, dinner our first night, room service, as well as food and drinks by the pool and everything we had was excellent.||Especially memorable was the hotel staff left a hand-written note and a bottle of cava on my husband's birthday. It was so incredibly thoughtful and really made a lasting impression. Without question we would stay here again and could not have been more pleased with Gecko Beach House Hotel.||Two things which were a little unclear which potential guests might find helpful:||1. While beachfront, the hotel does not have their own sun beds on the sand. These are operated by the local municipality and cost I believe 10 euros each.||2. The pool area (called the Gecko Beach Club) is open to non-hotel guests for a daily rate. As I understood it, there are no sun beds around the pool reserved for the exclusive use of hotel guests, and while not an issue during our stay, I was nevertheless concerned we might not have access to one if there were a lot of day pass-holders. There is, however, a quiet area with Balinese beds called Gecko Gardens on the other side of the hotel and away from the pool which is reserved exclusively for guests.

Twenty fours at this hotel made perfectly clear why the property is not listed as recommended by Forbes or any other luxury travel rating service. From arrival to departure, the property was severely lacking and the negligence and indifference of the staff prompted us to prepare a Spanish reclamation form against the hotel. Summary up front: unimpressive facilities, ambivalent staff, and the kicker being a near death experience on bikes rented from the hotel which didn´t have front and rear lighting for night travel.||||After almost a month of planning our Anniversary and emails with the hotel for a pickup service (quoted at 90 euro whereas taxi was 17 euros), we flew all the way over from Miami and arrived at the principal port of Formentera were we received an email that because we arrived 15 minutes late, the Hotel couldn’t pick us up and left us waiting in the Taxi Line for 2 hours with no alternative transportation offered by the Hotel. For example, waiting an additional 15 minutes for another car rather than the two hours for a taxi would have been preferable, but no such proactive communication assistance was offered. Fabulous start to an anniversary, right?||||A bit tired from the trip, we checked in with the front desk who made no effort to apologize or recognize the lack of assistance offered. Instead, we checked in, dropped out bags in the room and preceded with plans for a day on the island. More on this later, but the room itself was a joke. The mattress was rock hard, the sheets felt threadbare and cheap, the pillows were thiner than tissue paper, and the toiletries were some unbranded discount product.||||Since we had a lunch reservation in the opposite side of the Island and a Dinner Reservation in the 2nd largest town Es Pujol, we discussed with the hotel if they advised us to take Taxis or enjoy "a wonderful experience with Electric Bikes" from the hotel that turned into a Nightmare... NO ONE of the staff warned us the Island is completely dark at night, despite advising that the trip included a dinner reservation. After completing the contracting with the front desk, which they were very insistent on getting a signature for the 50 euro per bike costs, it then took four staff members to show how to turn on the electric bikes. At no point was any safety check or safety demonstration offered. Like you, reader, having rented bikes both electric and non'electric all of the world, you know theres always a safety check. Well, not at the Gecko.||||After lunch and dinner, we mounted the hotel´s bikes and realized after leaving Es Pujol, that the front and back lights for the bike were not working. We turned the battery on and off, checked the lights, pressed on the lights, nothing. Seeing as the journey back required travel through dark roads with with not a single light in the streets, we contemplated calling the hotel to ask for a pick up of the bikes. We thought otherwise after it took the hotel nearly twenty minutes to produce the wifi property, so we decided to peddle back using our cell phones as flashlights to alert traffic to our presence on the road.||||Thankfully, we were not drinking at either lunch or dinner. As soon as we left the town we found ourselves in a life or death situation biking back from our dinner more than 30km, with deadly curves surrounded by water and cars/motorbikes in both directions. To complete the TRAUMA the Hotel is located in an isolated part of the Island with no signage on the way and the streets were getting darker and desolated, by this point we had 2% of battery and scared of calling and losing our flash lights.||||When we were back almost at midnight, the front desk girl had no idea if the bikes had lights or not, 5 workers were called and none could turned the lights on. The next day, after barely getting any sleep from the stress of returning to the hotel, being met with complete indifference, and being forced to sleep on a bed that likely wouldn´t satisfy the standards for a prison, we had a decent lunch at the pool. Of course, no recognition of an anniversary or offer to order (and pay for champagne or cava) to mark the occasion. Upon leaving, and when presented with the bill for the stay, the manager stated that the fee for the bikes had been removed. No apology or promise to look into the existing safety standards, just removal from the bill of charges for a service that could have killed us. This after being accused of taking a beach tote bag from the hotel which was discarded at the pool for someone else to throw in the trash and being charged 30 euros for the minibar which we didn´t use. Laughably, when questioning the mini bar charges, the staff attempted to explain what a minbar is.||||The "manager" was the real quicker. When we brought up the issue of the lack of saftey features for the bikes, as required by spanish law, he excused himself saying the bikes belong to a different company that assured them the lights were working next morning. Not only he gaslighted us but also said "Im the Manager we are not charging you the bikes, there´s nothing else I can do" as if our lives were worth only 50$.||||When we were checking out he refused to give us a Reclamation Form to proceed with legal actions since the Bikes were against the Spanish Law and they committed negligence on the service, so we had to reminded him he was obligated by law to do so.||||We Paid almost 2.000$ for one night, and they even forgot it was our anniversary. No one from the staff did any special notice during the lunch reservation and the food was not only mediocre but overpriced. THE WORST hotel experience of our lives and one of the most scary moments we have lived so far. The management of the hotel is clueless, the facilities lacking, the contracted services either non existent or life threatening.||||On a positive note, the hotel offered complimentary paddle boards which were fun on the beach but for your surprise the water was nasty, covered with dead seaweed, grey almost brown water and suffer waves. The only other positive note I can recall is a decent iced frappe.
