Gelateria Alaska

I searched for Gelateria Alaska after reading about it in a Wallpaper City guide, if anyone remembers the guides. It was a very hot day. Perhaps it was the extreme late summer sun, but I chose a scoop of the peach to cool down. It was light in flavor, just enough to enjoy the cool of the gelato with a refreshing peach taste. Not too heavy in sugar, so it melts more like ice versus frozen syrup. The location is quiet, secluded almost, a rare sentiment in Venice. You can even find shade in the area. And just beyond it, you will be treated to a stunning canal view.

Flavours always evolving, with weird and delightfully delicious options you dont find elsewhere, the gelato here deserves more popularity than Suso (which has very long cues). My favourite gelato is a pleasant green one that is actually made from local underwater plants (but made quite sweet) and am so sad I will never have it again now I am home! We went twice in September 2025 and loved both staff members.

A truly unique experience if you want it to be. Alongside the standard selection of pistachio and chocolate, you can find flavors a little on the wild side, like ginger, sage, saffron or anise. I had a three flavor combo with “Goodbye Dubai” chocolate, mandorla (almond), saffron and it was delicious. Stop by for a treat!

Never disappoints. The most wonderful and innovative gelato in Venice. A true master of his trade. The cardamon gelato was realy good. The avocado gelato was sweet and creamy he definitely made a mouth watering flavour I enjoyed to the last bite

The owner was so kind and helpful with ordering, I am vegan and gluten free and was very impressed with the range of flavours aside from just fruits. So many beautiful spices. I got the cinnamon gelato and wish I was staying longer so I could try cardamom and all the other vegan flavours! Made in shop from natural ingredients. No syrups. Highly recommend 💕

Delicious local gelato. Lots of unique flavors. We got the peach gelato and lemon gelato and it was very refreshing.

[UPDATE 2025] 3 years since my first scoop here at Alaska, I still return every year to Venezia because I really missed this place's delicious scoops and the friendly Roberto who has been hand-making his gelato and experimenting new innovative flavors that challenges the boundaries of taste. If you love to support local businesses and eat ice cream, don't hesitate to grab a scoop at Alaska! [ORIGINAL 2022] his is the gelato I have ever had, and I was fortunate that I was living near here while I was in Venezia. Every afternoon I went here for my daily gelato, I witnessed the owner Roberto tediously labored to hand make gelato with fresh milk. If you want real local gelato, this place is it!

We got there right before closing and the man was kind enough to still serve us as he was packing up for the day. I had the pistachio and chocolate gelato and they were both very good.

I have some mixed opinions about this place. I had heard they have many unique flavors and I was looking forward to their saffron gelato. However, when we went they weren't offering it but had some other cool alternatives. I got the avocado and rose while my husband wanted to try something unique so he got the celery and ginger. The avocado and rose tasted great and the combination was perfect. The avocado wasn't sweet on its own and the rose complemented it well. The celery and ginger tasted good initially but started tasting weird after a couple bites. None of the flavors were as creamy and dense as I would have liked. I would say if you are around then give it a try otherwise you aren't missing out on anything.

Don't know what the other reviewers are talking about. I had good gelato at a good price - really enjoyed the bright cinnamon notes in my scoop. They have a (single) chair in front of the shop for you to sit in but it's very common in Italy to not have seating at a Gelateria. Would definitely go again to try more flavors!

By far the worst gelato I've had in Italy! It is not smooth or creamy. The texture is "whipped" like it has air inside of it. Very icy. The flavors taste artificial and not good. I couldn't even eat the pear flavor because it was so bad. In addition to the bad gelato, the staff was extremely unfriendly and unhygienic! I clearly asked for tamarind flavor along with pear. The man handed me a cone with turmeric instead of tamarind. I pointed out the difference and he grumbled. Instead of making me a new cone, he wiped off the turmeric flavor and put it back in the gelato tub to give to someone else!! Absolutely disgusting. And my cone still had remnants of turmeric on it, so it ruined the flavors. It was a bad experience entirely.

After reading rave, though mixed, reviews about this place, I ventured through the narrow streets of Venice to taste this gelato, and I was pleasantly surprised. Offering a variety of flavors, it's tempting not to order a bigger size to try them all. Their gelato is my favorite to this day. It's light yet still creamy. The flavors are simultaneous subtle and profound. It's a gustatory delight! I am waiting for the day to return to Venice so I can eat this gelato.

An unassuming slot with an odd name in the North-Central part of Venice where tourists rarely flock, one may pass right by Gelateria Alaska assuming it was yet another place for creamy, frozen confections were it not for a slow-growing word-of-mouth amidst the Gastronomic circle that the space and its owner were one of the few places still executing the craft without the assistance of modern machinery, the flavors simple and boldly flavored amidst a creamy, airless base. Truly a rare space in that the owner goes so far as to hide Gelato Artigianale credentials behind a commercial rainbow cone, entry to Alaska finds a total of only twelve flavors available daily, the owner a well-traveled elderly gentleman fluent in several languages who seems happy to discuss his approach. Offered tastes of Cinnamon, Pear and Chocolate, the former intense to the point that those opting for it would be best served to mix it with another flavor, it was untasted that the decision was made to order a 3-ball cone for €4, cash-only, the Pistachio as pure as the fresh roasted nuts themselves while the Straciatella and Gianduia Bianco were each beautifully blended, the former riddled in Dark Chocolate while the later had just a touch of grit from the addition of ground Hazelnuts.

We walked all the way across town to try this gelateria strongly recommended by Culture Trip (https://theculturetrip.com/europe/italy/articles/the-best-gelato-in-venice/). We could not have been more disappointed. The gelato had a strange texture, very icy, as if it was melted and froze back again. The mango flavor tasted like anything but mango. Don't go here.

I am a big fan of unusual flavors of gelato, and I happened to be remotely in the area, so I decided to give this a try, despite the fact that some people gave it very low ratings. Like others, I was bummed to learn about the no tasting policy, which I have not experienced elsewhere in Italy. (Wasn't mentioned in the Google reviews that I read, though people mention it here.) I decided to go with ginger, since it's something I can get elsewhere in Italy, and since I love ginger. The second star in this review is for the fact that the ginger flavor was very bright and true -- clearly there was a lot of fresh ginger used. However, everything else about it was wrong. One of the most remarkably un-creamy gelatos or even ice creams I've ever had, and it was way too soft -- to the point of being almost melted. After a took a bite, and realized that the other one star reviews weren't off, I actually almost went back to tell the person that there was something wrong with it -- at the very least, that it wasn't cold enough. But, eh, I don't speak Italian, and luckily I only got one scoop so it wasn't a huge financial investment. As I kept eating (only because the ginger flavor was enjoyable), I found both ice crystals a few tiny lumps of...something in there I have no idea what, as they were flavorless. In summary: molto disappointing.

No place to sit or linger while eating your gelato. The shop keeper is nice enough, not rude like other reviews indicated. Gelato tasted fine to me and really enjoyed it, although I did think that the price was a bit higher than other places we had visited.

Came here based on an article of the best gelatos in Venice. It was pretty good compared to the many other gelatos in the area that didn't make it in the list. It was very creamy which was awesome. I'd give it 3.5 stars but yelp only lets me do 3 or 4.

Rude owner. I asked for two scoops. The owner gave me one scoop and then the smallest amount of the second flavor that wasn't even a fourth of a scoop. I asked for more of that flavor since it wasn't even close to a scoop and he asked if I wanted three scoops then. I said no but that I wanted the second flavor to be an actual full size scoop. He angrily took half of the first flavor out of the cup and put the smallest amount of the second flavor in and scoffed. On top of the attitude, the gelato wasn't even good. Neither my friend nor I ate our gelato.

Really delicious gelato with very unique flavors. We tried some chocolate variation as well as their watermelon gelato and loved both flavors. A must try when in Venice!

It was all right but not as good as gelato in Rome or Florence. Decent prices. Tasted more like American style ice cream. The mint had sprigs of something that I had to spit out and leaves that got stuck on my teeth. The chocolate was average.

Delicious gelato tonight after dinner. I tried the tiramisu and the pistachio. Very creamy and flavorful. My son had the chocolate and the stracitella (sp?). He enjoyed it immensely. The flavors are plentiful with high quality ingredients not over powered with too much sugar. A great authentic option in Venice.

Absolutely loved this gelateria. The gelato was creamy and the flavors were so vibrant. It's true that he doesn't allow tastings, so I went into Rocket Salad blind, as it were, but I was willing to take the risk since it wasn't that expensive. We ate our cones while waiting for someone else to join us, so I ended up getting another serving for the road.

Highly recommend their tiramisu ice cream at this place! One of the cheaper ones in Venice, although the location is not all that convenient if you're not in that area to begin with. Nevertheless still a place worth trying out !

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! I was fooled into walking 2 miles to this place after reading a likely bogus review on some random blog having never been to Venice This was by far the worst gelato I've ever tasted, and I've eaten gelato at at least 20 locations on this 3 week trip to 6 Italian cities besides some of the best gelato shops in the States. First, the owner doesn't allow samples, and we quickly found out it was for good reason after tasting this extremely tasteless and VERY ICY "gelato". It tasted as if he'd recycled it a dozen times. It even gave my wife a stomach ache for the rest of the night. I'm very surprised how this place is in business with the dozens of even mediocre gelatarias far exceeding it in quality.

This was an extreme disappointment. We had heard of this gelato place and ordered fig, chocolate, and pear. The flavors were very bland and not worth it. The fig and chocolate tasted the same. The man would not let people sample, so we were not able to even try the flavors before purchasing.

The person that assisted us when buying 5 gelato's cones from the shop was extremely rude. My friend payed with a €50 not and this put the guy off. Despite him holding a big bulge of change in his hands. The gelato was nothing special. In fact the the worst i have had in italy (want bad but not as good ad the others i have had) I would recommend stroll past this shop and spend your money elsewhere.

Unfortunately so bad my daughter walked home and tossed hers in the toilet. Gelato was frost bitten. Could have been a bad day but that's no excuse for selling ruined product. If you go, better taste before you buy. Very disappointing.

I read about this "charming" gelato spot on Condé Nast's best gelato in Italy! Was thrilled to try it and took a afternoon walk with the family over from Rialto Bridge area! It was a little longer than I had expected, so we were more than ready to dive into the rare flavors of this original gelato. We waited our turn and then walked up to the counter with cheerful smiles and a friendly buongiorno, and then I asked to taste the roses flavor... I was curtly told, no samples were allowed. This was a first since we had been in Italy, but I shrugged it off and we all ordered our gelato. I decided to get mine in a cone and as he was loading the cone with the last flavor, I thought it looked like it would be a huge mess, so I simply asked for a cup to place it in. I was told "it's too late". I offered to pay for a cup, he replied "9.50 and we do not sell cups". Terrible service, Ok but maybe just maybe the gelato is amazing (I got chocolate, mandorlo, and roses)... Disappointed yet again. My least favorite gelato in Italy so far. Felt like all of our flavors were lacking in flavor! Happy that others had wonderful experiences, disappointed that I didn't have the same..

This was another on my to-try list, and I'm definitely glad I did. It was out of the way, but we didn't mind because we were walking from one side of the town anyway. The neatest thing was all the different flavor combinations there were, many more than your traditional gelato stand. Also the banana was grey which is always a good sign. I was in the mood for some real banana so I ordered a cup full and it was great. We wanted to go back by again and order more, but it was a bit out of the way so we weren't able to find time.

The Gelato here was so fantastic and unique!! I had ginger and pear! It's all organic and the owner makes it all himself. A little tricky to find like everything in Venice but it's worth the search!!

I ordered mango without tasting (no tasting policy) and it did not taste like mango or any other fruit I could identify. When I asked the owner he just threw up his hands and dismissed me.

The man working behind the counter seems extremely unbalanced. A couple of us took a little longer than usual to pick our flavors but there was no one else there and there were seven of us ordering so we didn't expect the totally unhinged reaction from the person behind the counter. When one of us asked another member of our group how their gelato tasted the man started screaming that you had to speak directly to him while pounding his chest and scowling menacingly. Never seen anything like it lol. Guy is definitely not all there and I wouldn't trust him to serve clean/safe food to my family.

This was one of the highlights of my Venice trip! The owner was extremely kind and very sociable and he let us sample a couple flavors. I went for the strangest flavor available, which was celery, and paired it with hazelnut flavor. Surprisingly the celery flavor was my favorite and I was left pining for another scoop. My recommendation: go for the interesting flavors, because you can get the normal gelato flavors at any other gelateria!

I came here because of the Urban Adventures Blog which called Alaska the "best gelato in Venice hands down". That blog couldn't be more wrong. Stephanie t.'s review is spot on. Great flavors but terribly un-creamy. If you skip Alaska you won't be missing anything.

Wow jerk of an owner, mediocre ice cream ... What's not to love. I heard a great from some other guide book ... Must have been a previous owner or he just gave up. No business to speak of but still rude, missing some key flavored and just not that good. Just look for natural/made here labels and you can find 30 better places in Venice.

After having gelato in at least a dozen places in Venice, Florence and Rome, this place has taken first place! I had the coffee gelato and my husband had pistachio...both absolutely delicious!! Highly recommend!!

Had raving review on Lonely Planet so we went far out of our way to come here. Unfortunately did not live up to expectations. Sure they had some creative flavors like arugula and blood orange but they have a "no testing" rule which I hate. Otherwise gelato ok but not great
