11 Best Gelato Shops in Rome

"It would be easy to be put off by the crowds, or the 1980s aesthetic—with a colonnade, palm trees, and marble floors—at Gelateria della Palma, but elbow your way to the wraparound glass counter and you’ll be rewarded with 150 types of gelato, from vegan chocolate and zabaglione (eggnog) to a teal-colored basil (a sure sign that no additives have been used) and a cult-favorite Kit-Kat flavor." - Maresa Manara

Google
One should visit this gelato cafe when s/he visits the Pantheon. When I asked the attendant which flavour he would recommend, the first word came from his mouth was pistachio. Then I trusted him and ordered a pistachio ice cream. The attendant's recommendation didn't disappoint me. The ice cream is rich in the flavour of pistachio. The ice cream itself is also creamy in texture. Bravo. Their espresso is also rich in flavour. The attendants are friendly and diligent. The place is also clean, spacious and chill. Please note that no public washrooms from this cafe. Customers need to present a ticket in order to have access to the washrooms.

Google
Excellent gelato. Lime and lemon are '*explicative* great' I quote the cashier. I didn't appreciate how he spoke, but after I had the gelato, I think I understand. Not sure about the other 146 flavors, but lime and lemon, mango and Coco were excellent

Google
Absolutely amazing ice cream! De La Palma is hands down one of the best gelaterias in Rome. With 150 flavors to choose from, it's a dream come true for any ice cream lover. Whether you're in the mood for something fruity, creamy, nutty, or completely unique – they've got it all. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, making it a perfect place to cool down on a hot day or simply take a break while exploring the city. They even have a small bar area where you can grab a soft drink and sit down to enjoy your treat. I've been coming here for years, and I’ll continue coming back for many more. It's a spot that never disappoints. Highly recommended for locals and tourists alike – a true Roman gem!

Google
150 different ice cream flavours and the two I tried (Pistachio and Cappuccino) were very good. They let you sample before buying so you can get a taste of the more “exotic” ones before buying if you’re not sure. Definitely a great place to get Gelato if you’re around the Pantheon.

Google
Amazing selection of flavours, absolutely spoiled for choice! You won’t find anywhere else with more choice, the gelato was very good and reasonably priced. Great selection of vegan options as well, and not just the normal fruit sorbets - actual vegan ice cream! Highly recommend

Google
During our recent family trip to Rome, we stumbled upon Gelateria Della Palma, and it quickly became a highlight of our adventure. Located near the Pantheon, this gelateria boasts an astounding selection of over 150 gelato flavors, making the decision-making process both delightful and daunting. One of the most memorable aspects was the sheer variety of flavors available. From classic options like stracciatella and pistachio to more adventurous choices such as basil and Kit-Kat, there was something to satisfy every palate. My children were particularly thrilled by the vibrant displays and the opportunity to sample unique combinations they had never imagined. We tried panna cotta, cinnamon roll, dulce de leche mousse, espresso and dragon fruit. Amazing and so tasty. The ordering process was straightforward: you first pay at the counter, then present their receipt to one of the friendly attendants to select their desired flavors. We were impressed by the range of sizes offered, including a colossal €15 cone that appeared to hold nearly a kilogram of gelato. A tempting challenge for any ice cream enthusiast!!! Beyond the gelato, Della Palma also features a bakery section, offering an array of pastries and other sweet treats. This addition makes it a versatile spot for anyone with a sweet tooth, ensuring there’s something for everyone. The staff were exceptionally pleasant and patient, even as we took our time making selections. Their warmth added to the overall experience, making us feel welcome and valued as customers. In summary, Gelateria Della Palma is a must-visit destination for gelato lovers in Rome. We will definitely be back.

Google
An unforgettable gelato experience in the heart of Rome! Gelateria Della Palma absolutely lives up to the hype. With over 150 flavors, this place is a dream for gelato lovers. I tried the hazelnut, pistachio, and dark chocolate – all incredibly rich, creamy, and packed with flavor. They even have vegan and lactose-free options, which is a huge plus! The shop is spacious and beautifully designed, just a short walk from the Pantheon. Even when it’s busy (which it usually is), the service is quick and friendly. You can really tell everything is made with care. Whether you’re a gelato purist or love trying creative flavors like tiramisù or cheesecake, this place is a must-visit. One of the best gelato experiences I’ve had in Italy – highly recommended!

Huge selection of flavours!!!! my dad is diabetic so they also had sugar-free. But must say portions are super small.

Yelp
It's overrated. There's better ice cream in Rome. Yes? the many flavors are great to see but the flavor and texture is not there. Service is friendly, quite busy.

Yelp

Yelp
Well, I was impressed with the abundance of flavors and the attractiveness of the displays. It was rather funny that the male cashier read my mind, and handed me the ticket that corresponded with what I wanted. We laughed as he admitted, "It's my job." In contrast to one reviewer who felt the staff was rude, my experience was the exact opposite. For such a busy place, I had no issues with the staff. Now, many of the clientele need to learn some basic manners, namely: Tone down the pushy, loud, demanding behavior, okay people? Acknowledge people who have clearly been waiting before your grand entrance. And have your choices ready so the rest of us can get on with our lives. I opted for the medium cup, and the servers managed to fill it fully with three flavors. The Chocolate Amaretto was the winner in my opinion. The Red Grape and the Peach were also tasty and refreshing on a hot Rome day.

Yelp
We were on a walking tour and our guide brought us here. There are so many flavors! You buy your ice cream first and then bring your receipt to the counter and whichever flavors you want and there will be someone to help you. We ended up with mango and watermelon. The mango was delicious but the watermelon tasted very artificial. I wouldn't recommend watermelon. There are lots of flavors to choose from, so maybe we just chose an off one.

Savitha K.

Yelp
Very poor service . Ultimate chaos! First you to the cash counter and pay after which the chaos starts. No line and everybody is everywhere. I and my family waited for such a long time and could not even get what we wanted. A white man behind me was served before I did . I am a brown person. RACIST RACIST ! Place. Do not go there !!
google avatar

Shannen B.

Yelp
So many options (150!) and I got Nutella, amarena (black cherry) and sesame with honey Nutella is amazing!!! And so creamy. Love the service. The employees even made sure to check that we got our crepe that came later
google avatar

El Y.

Yelp
Gelato itself was standard, come here to check out all 150 flavors! Expect many tourists -- a pretty well known spot in a bustling neighborhood!
google avatar

Lala C.

Yelp
Bella! This is definitely the grand dame of bakeries, coffee, gelato, candy extradorinaire! Come by any time of day and you always find a treat to please you. We enjoyed ordering and drinking our coffee at the bar. Don't forget to pay first and show your receipt for your items!
google avatar

Yelp
This little cup, pass my expectations by far. As small as the cup is, the flavor was truly exceptional the service was quick and easy. The amount of flavors you have to to choose from can be a little overwhelming, but I don't think that you can't mess up with any of them that they offered. I'm glad I chose the small cup because I think all size larger would've been too much.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
This was actually my favorite gelato place that I've tried so far during my trip to Rome in the past couple of weeks. I believe they are known for having 150 flavors. There are also many desserts and candies such as macarons, tiramisu, cakes, etc. I wanted to try all of it and come back for more but my stomach could only handle so much. The servers were kind and fulfilled my request of having some whipped cream and a logo on top of my ice cream haha.
google avatar

Sakthi S.

Yelp
We were lured in after seeing the sign that there were 150 flavors. We walked in and grabbed a ticket and waited our turn. Even though there was a long line, we were in and out within 15 minutes. Definitely a lot of people and an exciting ambiance. Lots of people surrounding the store eating their gelato. Got the milk rice which was creamy and also had a nice crunch to it. Definitely one of the more unique flavors I've had. Wasn't a huge fan of the cheesecake, but it was solid!
google avatar

Matthew J.

Yelp
So many flavors that it makes it hard to choose! Can't go wrong.

Yelp
Not a bad place especially if you are with a group and everyone wants something different. They have OK Gelato, their bakery items or ok, good or pretty good and the espresso and coffee is adequate. They are usually pretty busy but despite that the staff is pleasant while they try to work through as many people as quickly as possible. Since they do a few things, I did not feel like any of them were exceptional. Sure everything tasted good but I can say I have had better gelato at one place, better coffee at another place and better bakery items at yet another different place. That said, there was nothing wrong with what we had. It was fine. I would not recommend standing too long here but if you are looking for a quick treat and variety then this is as good an option as any. Should you be looking for something specific that you want to be exceptional then I would encourage you to do a little research and look around a bit more. Prices were fair and staff was great just not a place that I would remember or specifically recommend to friends.

Yelp
We stayed at an Airbnb right above this gelateria and I went there every single day during our 5 night stay in Rome to try all the different flavors. They have so many different flavors too! With the cone you can get three flavors to try and with a small cup you can get two flavors. They also have other items like crepes and macarons. I got their macarons as well and they were good! I loved all the different flavors I tried except for the dragonfruit. That one was not for me. My favorites were the watermelon and there was also one that tasted just like the ferrero rocher chocolate. When you first walk in, head to the counter on the right hand side to pay for what you want to order and you will get a ticket. Then you take the ticket to the gelato counter and they will help you with choosing the flavors in your cone or cup. At first this was confusing to me since I'm used to walking up to the gelato counter, getting the gelato, and then heading to pay. But this made a lot of sense for high volume tourist area. The gelato was so dense and so flavorful! Absolutely delicious! Definitely recommend trying this place!! Staff is super friendly!
google avatar

Carrie V.

Yelp
A little touristy but epic in the selection - so many flavors. Everyone enjoyed. Gluten free cone was a definite plus. Every flavor that we chose was delicious. Our first (and favorite) gelato in Rome. They did a great job with dietary constraints.
google avatar

Norbert K.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite stops in Rome. Yes, it's touristy, but there's something nice about coming back. There are now over 150 flavors, and I tried a new one this trip: Apple Cinnemon (4/5). I love cinnamon (cannella) as a gelato flavor, and that's what I had here, with bites of apple.
google avatar

Janice L.

Yelp
150 flavors in this gelateria! The inside of the store looks like it could be straight out of Willy Wonka with bright lights and sweets all around. Even though the shop was filled with lots of customers, the servers were very good at keeping track of the orders. To order, you need to pay for your gelato first with the cashier then take your ticket to a server behind the gelato counter. We ordered a medium for 4€ which came with three scoops. Pomegranate: tangy, sweet, and was more of a sorbet consistency Macaron: this flavor had pieces of macaron in the gelato, but it was a little too sweet Cheese and fig: our favorite of the three flavors--the cheese and fig complemented each other very well Personally, I preferred the texture and service from smaller gelato shops. But if you are looking for unique flavors, this is a good option.
google avatar

Tiffany A.

Yelp
I never go out of my way to leave a bad review, but I'm making an exception. I am fluent in Italian came here with my kids. I cannot describe how unbelievably rude the staff is. The flavors aren't fresh either. Save your money and go down the street to Giolitti.

Valerie M.

Yelp
What a great find! They have 50+ flavors at any given time. I really like that they have both milk and milk free options. Everything is fresh and delicious. We came here multiple days and tried the following: milk free berry, milk free strawberry, lemon, lavender, strawberry, raspberry, and a raspberry jelly roll. It was all great. They also have a full bar if you are interrelated in a night cap. Later in the evening it's packed but you can generate your gelato within 10-15 min. You pay at the cash register first and then present your receipt to the guys working behind the gelato counters.
google avatar

Astrid C.

Yelp
Great ice cream. Lots and lots of flavours. Only "sad" thing about it is that you can't choose the cone you want. It's only with sizes, small medium and large cone, there was a corn, same size with some nuts and chocolate around it. My friend wanted one like that but only wanted two flavours, she was not allowed to have one because you can only have that one with three. Mystery to me why you can't put two scoops on a cone for three.
google avatar

Adrianna U.

Yelp
This place was okay. Of course, it's gelato in Italy, so it's gonna be decently delicious. But there's so many gelato places in Rome, so I get to be picky! I think this Gelateria was my least favorite. I had blackberry and raspberry, and they just weren't as smooth and fresh tasting as I expected. I mean just think about it, if a gelato place has over 150 flavors, how fresh and natural can it be? They'd have to have so many workers consistently making the gelato. It felt way too much of a tourist trap to me. (Especially with the beer and wine flavored gelato. No, thank you)
google avatar

Krista S.

Yelp
Over 150 gelato flavors can be found in this gelateria! It's a bit overwhelming but take your time looking at all the flavors! A small cup gets you two scoops of any you want and a medium gets you 3 scoops.. a small is about 2 euros and medium is 4 euros. We tried the Kinder bueno, Oreo Mousse, Kinder Egg and Irish Coffee and they were all delicious!!! I'm not sure you can go wrong in whatever you choose. The only bad thing about this place is the people who work here. They seemed overly "friendly" to female customers. A customer was asking if she could try a flavor and the worker told her "of course! but for every taste, you have to give me a kiss" in a playful way.. but very unprofessional in my POV. Other than that, the food is great. Lots of tourist go here, so be prepared for a line. You also have to pay first, then bring your receipt to the gelato scoopers and they will get you your ice cream. Enjoy!
google avatar

Mikayla M.

Yelp
On our way to finding the Trevi fountain, came across this gelato place!!! Over 150+ flavors to choose from! A refreshing treat after a day of traveling around Rome. Ordered: small cup of oreo & dulce de leche gelato (€2.80), small cup of pistachio & mango gelato (€2.80)
google avatar

Kirk B.

Yelp
Best and biggest Gelato place in Roma! Always try to stop by if in town. You need to pay first then go to the ice cream counters with your receipt to select your flavors.
google avatar

Queenie T.

Yelp
If you only have time to try one gelato place in Rome (though there's always room for dessert!), Della Palma is the place to be. Known for their signature 150 flavors of gelato, they have the most variety of unique flavors. Each of their stores are huge with a seating area and even unique little gifts you can purchase for friends and family as a keepsake. You first pay for your cone and then walk up to the server to pick your flavors. My favorites were the macaron flavor and the earl gray!
google avatar

Heather F.

Yelp
This gelato place had endless options of gelato so it was hard to decide what to get. They had over 100 flavors! Some were a mouse and some were gelato. They had flavors ranging from basic chocolate to fun flavors like your favorite cereal. You can sample different ones after paying to see which one you like best. There are several workers behInd the counter to assist you. We came at night time so it was not too busy. Usually you have to take a number to be waited on. I tried a few but I like flavors related to chocolate and peanut butter. I got the dark chocolate mousse and the chocolate peanut butter flavor. The staff was patient considering I asked for a lot of samples. I got the size small and it allowed me to have two flavors in one cup. It was a great treat after dinner.
google avatar

Nel P.

Yelp
Best gelato we've had during our 2 week trip to Italy. Of course this is all subjective and just coming from my own personal experience, but the sheer selection of flavors available to try was mind blowing. Situated close to the Pantheon, this shop has a bit of everything (pastries, assorted sweets, beverages--alcoholic and non) but the gelato part of the place is top notch! The service was excellent, and really appreciated their patience with our questions as well as indulging our requests to sample their flavors. Definitely a place I highly recommend if you're in the area.
google avatar

Brett N.

Yelp
Why 4 stars? Because the gelato was tasty, but I don't know if it was worth the trouble. --- --- --- We came here as a part of a walking tour and it was the definition of a mad house. The visit happened to be on May Day, which is Europe's equivalent of Labor Day, so it seemed that the entire country of Italy was in this gelato shop. I don't know if they have fire marshall laws here, but they certainly would have been in violation of them. It was so packed that it was literally hard to move. And moving around was especially important here because there are 150 flavors to choose from, which means the casing extends all around the interior of the building. When there were what felt like 15,000 people inside, it made it difficult to actually check out all of the different flavors. I also felt pressured to make a quick decision once I actually did have the attention of a person behind the counter, even though I'd probably only seen 30 of the flavors at that point. The gelato, as I said, was tasty, but definitely not worth the chaos.
google avatar

Darianna C.

Yelp
Don't be scared by the crowds. It's worth going here! The choice of flavors is staggering. You will have to go here several times to even try a third. My favorite gelateria in Rome. Better than Giolitti in my view. Nice portions.
google avatar

Kimberly C.

Yelp
Too many amazing-looking flavors to choose from! I had a sachertorte gelato here that was one of my favorites during my trip. Delicious dark chocolate swirled with apricot. I would've loved to try more.
google avatar

Sam H.

Yelp
I came here a couple times because we were walking by. They have a huge selection, but for some reason I found the taste of their gelato odd to me. I thought it was the first day of my selection combination, but I got another combo the next day and it was still off to me. I can't explain it, but I was not a fan of this place. I realize it gets a lot of positive reviews, but another place I went to have gelato was significantly better than here. Take it for what it is worth.
google avatar

Lana L.

Yelp
The 150 flavors are what drew us in. Your mouth will water as you go back and forth and around the store deciding which of the delicious flavors you will get. I spent at least 10 minutes picking two flavors for my small cup and chose the Ferrero Rocher and one of the pistachio flavors. I LOVED the Ferrero Rocher flavor. It was probably the best flavor of gelato I'd ever had. It tasted exactly like the chocolate but in delicious, creamy gelato form. The pistachio flavor that I got was a bit too sweet for me. Weeks later, I'm still thinking about the Ferrero Rocher gelato. Definitely stop by this place in Rome!
google avatar

Marco N.

Yelp
Not too bad, the cones might be a better deal than smallish 4,50 euro cups, compared to other gelato places. But all the flavors are a big hit. Especially when you have a picky crowd. :-) Also a good selection of candy in the shop, but I don't recall the pricing.. Taste wise for gelato the Venchi chain might be a tad better and makes their own gelato. Best overall that we tried in our recent travels to Italy was place called Gay-Odin in Napoli, absolutely fabulous. Didn't use the bathroom, so not sure of any issues there.
google avatar

Neville A. W.

Yelp
To die for. So many selections (150 flavors) and not enough time to select or try. This geloto store is as much a must stop by place as are the Roman ruins and the Vatican City.
google avatar

Mike Y.

Yelp
Decent ice cream. We counted 130+ flavors. But ... We felt that we were rushed and the guy behind the counter didn't want to go from one side of the store to another (yeah, 130+ ice cream need a lot of space). Sigh.
google avatar

Christie S.

Yelp
So many options, you really can't go wrong here! I love the Kinder Bueno, with Nutella Swirl as a close second. This Gelateria is a massive store, often packed with dozens of people. Don't expect to be able to sit down. The sign says it's been here since 1978, but this was my fourth visit to Rome and I'd never seen it before. I did feel slightly bad going to what seemed like a modern Gelateria instead of Giolitti, but wanted to try something new.
google avatar

Cailen H.

Yelp
So good! Pricey, but worth it if you want to have the best gelato in town. This place is well known for having over 150 different flavors of Gelato. Sadly, only 6 of those flavors are dairy free/vegan, but that covers both fruit and chocolate/vanilla options. I loved my two scoops of soy chocolate and soy hazelnut! Employees are very nice as well.
google avatar

Leslie B.

Yelp
The best gelateria in Rome...ok, the best I've ever been to, but I have been to many. If you have been to a gelateria and think it is big, this one is bigger. It is really amazing...there are sooo many different flavors and I want to try them all. I remembered this place from my trip to Rome nine years ago, and was happy to find it was still there when I returned just a few days ago. I went there twice in two days, but if I had remembered where it was earlier, I would have gone every day. Between myself and my fiance, we tried six flavors. They were all delicious. I recommend the chocolate bignet. As you can see from the photos, the bins of ice cream are more like works of art. I look forward to returning the next time I am in Rome!

Christopher M.

Yelp
Very good value for price. Very good flavors with a huge variety. We recommend mixing flavors as some of the more exotic (such as lavender and rose) are good but you can't eat too much of them. More normal flavors, chocolate, after-8, mango, and such are very good. Dark chocolate with orange is heavenly.
google avatar

Karolina N.

Yelp
With 150 flavors to choose from, there is something for everyone! Vegans included - they had 5 soy-based flavors to choose from when I visited. Remember - pay first at the register, then go to the counter to pick your favors. They let you try them, too!
google avatar

Rose L.

Yelp
I've tried many gelato stores in Rome but this one is one of my favorites because it has soo many flavors to choose from and the flavors were spot on! Sadly I only tried 2 flavors but they were really good. The gelato was soft and creamy. I would come back and am really sad I didn't go back while I had the chance :(
google avatar

Nadine F.

Yelp
I really don't understand what the hype is about with this place. Yes, they have 150 flavors of gelato, but what's the point if they're not good? When I went in, everything looked freezer burned, like it had either been there for a really long time or just wasn't being stored at the right temperature. I tried the hazelnut and the tiramisu gelato, and they were both awful. They tasted strongly of artificial vanilla, with that sort of alcohol-y aftertaste to them, and not in a good way. I ended up throwing away most of it, which is not something I am known to do with ice cream of any kind. Not recommended.
google avatar

Drew B.

Yelp
The granddaddy of massive selection gelato. They've expanded the original store to the corner, and guzzied up the place to be truly grand and commercialized. The prices are up as well, and they only take credit card payment for purchases over €5 that you can easily exceed in here! Off season visit, as you can see it's pretty empty.
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
Delicious! And so many flavors to choose from (150+). I had Giolitti first and the next day tried this, and I liked the flavors I had here way better (with the exception that I think the pistachio at Giolitti was better). In my opinion, the quality of gelato was not sacrificed with the abundant quality offering. I also like how they present the flavors by placing the main ingredient in front. The staff was also more friendly than other gelato places, granted I went after late dinner when there weren't as many people so I can imagine it being more hectic during popular times. This will be the gelato place I remember when I return to Rome.
google avatar

Nancy T.

Yelp
Pistachio was their best flavor, good thing I asked the worker for suggestions. Mango I can never go wrong with either. They had so many flavors to choose from. I still think Giolitti's is the better and best tasting gelato though.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
After extensive research, my team of gelato volunteers, and I, have determined that Gelateria Della Palma does indeed have the best gelato in Rome. 150 delicious, five-star, mouth-watering varieties, all number one. We are pleased, once and for all, to be able to put this "who's-got-the-best-gelato" controversy to rest. I want you to know, however, our team knows that our work is not done. Our relentless gelato volunteer researchers are, at this very moment, scouring gelaterias across the city, looking for number two. And we will find them!
google avatar

Bo T.

Yelp
So many flavors! Can't go wrong with any gelato place in Italy but this store has more flavors than you can imagine. Got the small size which was plenty for a snack, brownie and Oreo (you always get at least two flavors). In Italy, go to the register to pay first, then take your receipt to the bar and they'll scoop it for you.
google avatar

Savannah B.

Yelp
While not my favorite gelato in Rome, it is a good option close to the Pantheon. I'm usually very wary of gelato shops that have an abundance of flavors, because usually they are more about quantity rather than quality, but Gelateria Della Palma was a pleasant surprise. With something like 150 flavors, it's not the best gelato you will find in Rome but is a nice treat in such a touristic area. Tip: make sure to go to the register and pay before heading to the counter!
