9 Best Gelato Shops in Venice | Condé Nast Traveler

"Gelateria il Doge might be a little out of the way—across the Grand Canal from Piazza San Marco in the lovely neighborhood of Campo San Toma—but that’s all part of the charm. There are more than 15 flavors of creamy, homemade gelato at this award-winning shop, including eight versions of chocolate, like the signature Crema di Doge (candied orange and chocolate), spicy chocolate (with pepper), and dark-pink Himalayan salt and cocoa. Sicilian dessert fans will also appreciate the traditional Sicilian granita (in five flavors) and the cassata Siciliana gelato, inspired by the classic fruit cake." - Jenna Scatena

Google
It can be tough to find high-quality, authentic gelato in the busier parts of Venice, so we were thrilled to come across Gelateria Il Doge. It's in a great location but feels like a genuine, local spot, not a tourist trap. The service was very friendly and they had a great selection of interesting flavors. I decided to try their signature 'Il Doge' flavor – a cream base with candied orange and chocolate chips. It was absolutely fantastic; really creamy with a great balance of citrus and chocolate. I'm glad I took a chance on something unique to the shop. This is a proper artisanal gelateria. Highly recommend stopping here if you're in the area and looking for the real deal.

Google
great gelato when you’re in Venice- Venice can be overwhelmed with tourists and trousers traps; and although this is near a few attractions, we found it to be quite good! Lots of flavor options, specialties, and kind service. I tried the local Doge flavor of cream & candied Orange ribbon + chocolate chips and it was fantastic. I took a chance on something that didn’t immediately jump out to me and I’m glad I did- I would highly recommend!

Google
This is definitely a gelateria worth visiting! I bought 2 scoops in a cup, Salted Caramel & Vanilla. The staff are very friendly and the service very fast! These 2 scoops cost me 5€ (5.90$, 4.50£) and it was quite delicious!

Google
There is a reason Google saysReviews not verified. this place deserves zero stars. It is really bad. For this place the gelato was absolutely the worst I’ve ever had in my entire life. The vanilla tasted like licorice. Vanilla is my yardstick for measuring how good gelato is. This place totally fails. Into the trash.

Google
We received amazing service from the staff at il Doge, they were really lovely! The gelato we tried was delicious as well. I would go there again!

Google
Got the fior di latte classic gelato flavor. I think this store is pretty historical and there was a line when I went. I think it was a decent gelato but there’s definite better out there. It’s light but I find it a bit on the sweeter side. Maybe I’ll try a different flavor next time.

Google
Yummy gelato at a fantastic price (€2.50)! I had the Cream with tangerine, pistachio, and almond. I also tried the salted caramel. Both were very good!

Google
Very tasty ice cream, lots of flavors to choose from. We came here twice in two days, the first day we got a huge portion and the second day not so much. Try the ‘mixed berries’, it was really good! Decently priced too.

Yelp
Two weeks in Italy. Gelato 2x most days. = probably 20-24 different gelatos After all that, and on our final night in Italy we went here and had the absolute best gelato. Loved it so much. Lots of candied orange peels, orange flavors, creamy gelato, and chunks of chocolate. Best of the entire trip.

Yelp
Great ice cream! I had Bacio and Nocciola and both were excellent. Of course in a traditional cone. Heaven. The claim to have been serving ice cream here since 1989. Great find!

Yelp
Gelato was pretty good. I don't know that it's better than any other place. We had orange and chocolate.

Yelp
The BEST gelato we had in all of Italy!! This is a family owned and operated gelateria, where the gelato is made right inside the store!!! (You can see gelato being made behind the counter). There were several awesome flavors- both dairy and nondairy based, both of which use fresh fruit. I tried the nondairy based strawberry gelato and the dairy fior di latte ("the base" of all flavors, similar to our "vanilla"- from which all other flavors are created). Both flavors were DELICIOUS. All the gelato was smooth and creamy- you can tell it's homemade from the fluffiness and airiness of the gelato in the metal containers. Definitely recommend trying this gelateria!!

Yelp
Tasty and a little cheaper than the store I went to yesterday. Single scoop is 1,80 euros and the double is 2,80. Got the Fior Latte and the caramel both were good and nice portions.

Yelp
Standout flavors: caramel and pistachio! Food: Loved their caramel flavor! It is not too sweet and with just the right amount of salt. Also loved the pistachio flavor: extremely nutty and fresh! Their gelato is light and not heavy. Service: friendly lady behind the counter Space: small little counter- get it to go and eat by the steps of the canal right by its side! Price: comparable to all the other gelato stores around.

Yelp
I have no room for mediocre gelato in my life! Shame on me for trusting Trip advisor....

Yelp
This was the first gelato we tried in Italy and it did not disappoint! We tried the peach and coffee flavors. It's really affordable at 1.50 euro for 1 scoop. There are lot of places to walk over and sit near by while you eat. The is also a grocery store right across from it where you can grab some water, wine, necessities, etc.

Yelp
Gelateria Il Doge is a mediocre gelateria given the ample options in Venezia. 1 star off: The flavors are basic (chocolate, mango, hazelnut, lemon, etc.) and nothing to "write home about". 1 star off: I did not like its signature flavor, Crema Il Doge, which consists of artificial orange and chocolate sauce flavors. Sorry, not worth my carbs!

Yelp
So good! I tried the coffee and Nutella flavors and both were awesome. Small little shop with a good selection and I also saw they have some vegan options although I didn't try any of them

Yelp
Good gelato and not over priced, line goes fast and friendly, helpful staff. Tried cone and in a cup as well, both are good

Yelp
This little ice cream parlor proclaims itself the "best ice cream in Venice". Having tried it, I would agree. The ice cream and slushies were made with real fruit. Not to miss is the "crema di doge"

Yelp
Location I visited wasn't at the spot on yelp's map. It was closer to the Ca Foscari University of Venice. The il doge flavor (candied orange and chocolate in vanilla) was phenomenal! The gelato is also fresh as you can see them making it behind the counter!

Yelp
I liked it! We decided to go with the coconut gelato and the apple gelato. The apple one was really good and the coconut one was pretty normal. I've had a lot of gelato in other places and I can't really differentiate it with the other places I've been. Regardless, it's a good place.

Yelp
We found this place last year and it was my hubby's fave so we came back for more this year. I actually favored their Icee drink. Best icee in Venice. It's a drink not gelato. I know it's the best because I had about 3 or 4 a day while in Venice. It was so hot and so crowded we needed one to cools down. Don't be scared of the mint it's actually refreshing but the strawberry is my fave!

Yelp
Stopped in for some gelato. 2.5 euro for two scoops. Tried their special flavor: delici. It was great with chocolate swirl, biscotti pieces, and cinnamon. Also had the melon, refreshing and smooth. Stop in, it's good!

Yelp
As far as my gelato experiences go in Italy, this has definitely been my favourite. Their sign claims the best gelato in Venice and I would certainly have to agree. They give much bigger scoops than other stores in Venice and their gelato is top notch. If you like vanilla, you have to try the fior do latte. Very tasty and refreshing l

Yelp
This place give good size scoops of gelato and decent prices. Although they are not as good as Frost, they were better than other Gelato places we had in Italy.
google avatar

Jonathan T.

Yelp
Very good gelato worth a stop if your in the area. They have 2 places in venice and this is there second. First one is a little bigger and might have more flavors but same gelato. This one is on the way to they Rialto bridge from the Santa Croce area where my hotel was located.

Yelp
Good icecream, above average. Gianduotto is not served in the traditional way - but good! So when you're near Campo Santa Margherita - check in here!
google avatar

Yelp
Flavors are a gamble here. The hazelnut was great, but the mousse of tiramisu tasted like whipped cream...
google avatar

Andreas F.

Yelp
Try peach, it's surprisingly good! Great ice cream. It's probably the best in Venice. We went there twice.
google avatar

Yelp
Look, I'm no gelato expert but for the price and location this place is pretty great. Right in the square where all the cool kids hang out, you can get 1 generous scoop of gelato for 1.50 Euros. They had a spicy chocolate one that reminded me of the stuff they have a Jacques Torres in Dumbo where they charge $4 for a scoop. They also had some granita that I love! Best flavor: almond. Grab a scoop and watch the shananigans in the plaza!

Yelp
I thought that this gelato was very good. I am not sure why there are such negative reviews. Most gelato in Venice appears factory-made, with neon colors and the like. The gelato here at Il Doge was much more natural and tasty. The chocolate and coffee crunch flavors were delicious. Only downside was that there wasn't cinnamon as a flavor choice when we visited (although their flavors do rotate), and their mint does't include any chocolate chips.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent gelato at quite reasonable prices. The frutti di bosco is just amazing. They also took good care of my (nut) allergy, making sure to thoroughly wash the spoons and explain the ingredients.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful staff, adorable ambiance and classic or creative flavour options. They also have vegan and gluten free selections if you prefer. Best in Venice!

K L.

Yelp
Probably the best gelato in Italy with Venchi a close second. Very creamy and flavors are spot on. Owner will only allow a single sample taste though.
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
Meh. Nice enough staff but the ice cream was pretty generic. Found a better place a few blocks away.
google avatar

J R.

Yelp
For your own sake, ignore the negative reviews and go to Il Doge. Other than the considerably more expensive Vizio e Virtu, this is the best gelato in Venice.
google avatar

Hannah R.

Yelp
Excellent gelato with many interesting natural flavored. You can see into the kitchen where the stuff is made. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
I have to say, for a gelateria in Italy, I expected better. My gelato was too loaded with dried fruit for me to really taste the actual gelato. They didn't offer just simple, pure, creamy gelato I wanted, seems like more for kids than grown-ups.

Scott B.

Yelp
Have you people been to the same place I've been visiting almost daily? Is is grown up gelato at its best!! The chocolate noir is heaven in a cone. You won't find bubble gum flavor or cotton candy flavor here...maybe that's what some people want...and that's mediocre, in my book. This isn't for the Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream crowd...nor the Baskin Robbins brigade. Il Doge is for true lovers of quality and flavor!

Jean P.

Yelp
Nothing here to justify the high review score. The ice cream is pretty mediocre in a country that offers the best in the world. Might be ok by the low Venetian standards though.
