11 Best Gelato Shops in Florence | Condé Nast Traveler

"Opened in 1932, Badiani is at the high end of Florence gelaterias. The large shop is perfectly designed, with a curved wooden counter presiding over a kaleidoscope of flavors and colors. The design is simple—light, white, and yet beautifully presented with care and consideration. All the better to let the sweets—gelatos, cakes, pastries, and freshly baked croissants—shine. The gelato is made fresh daily, and the menu's flavors are extensive; try Buontalenti, one of the signature flavors, which mixes egg cream and chocolate." - Bridget Arsenault

Google
Such an amazing array of flavours. The croissants were average - nothing amazing. Reduced a star as the server did a sloppy job with my cone order (it was falling off the cone). Rather than replace it she chucked it into a cup. Stopped serving us midway to serve a local customer. Staff are not particularly friendly sadly

Google
Delicious gelato, and not ridiculously expensive . Large gelato was 5 euros and very worth it. The cherry, cheesecake, mango, lemon, and tiramisu flavours were amazing. Nice interior and atmosphere as well!

Google
squisito! from cappuccino orzo to sandwiches, pastries & gelato, amazing! staff was so kind from the moment we stepped in for the first time, so i’m not sure where any of the “rude service” reviews came from. we literally came here twice today, couldn’t resist! grazie ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Google
Surely my favourite and best gelateria and pasticceria along the Via Dei Mille, just 2 minutes walk from Artemio Franchi, Fiorentina Stadium. From a chilling breakfast with wide selections of pastry (my favourite is Budino di Riso) and well made cappucino to artigianale lunch, try some menus and you will understand why I said artigianale - Anyway I attached many pictures of what I have tried in Badiani. Do not miss the legendary gelato with my favourite taste are buontalenti, dolce vita, and cremino pistachio. Clean and nice place is another plus point. I recommend this place as a MUST visit gelateria pasticceria when you are in Florence. The comprehensive good quality of taste cleanliness and services deserve 5 stars rating from me. Another plus point is the hospitality, especially from the owner Filippo, who always very friendly and warm welcome every customer with smile.

Google
undoubtedly one of the best gelato in Firenze. the neat environment and being close to the stadium attracts locals, if you are visiting and wants to get glimpse of real florentine life come here in the late summer evenings. They’ve been going strong for many years, good job!

Google
Definitely try it, even if you have limited budget like a student like me (small with 2 flavours 3€, medium with 3 is 4€ for cup)!! I got pistachio, sth on left with nuts, tiramisu, and chocolate with nuts. Also tasted cheesecake and their original one, these two including the second I mentioned were very delicious..

Google
Please bring back the American Consulate 200 Years flavor!!! It was so good. This gelateria has all your usual staples plus some important additions like sesame, yellow tomato - in summer, and loads of creamier versions of your all-time favorites. You’ll know them because they will have their flavor followed by the word “cremino”. All their nut flavors are divine and their bacio is great too. Badiani also serves sandwiches, treats, coffee and spritz like other bars. It has long hours, never closes in August, and the flavors and service are reassuringly consistent. The place is pretty much always packed. Indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
We were at Badiani's for a couple of days in mid-June, for breakfast and coffee, and to set our day's agenda for our trip... The staff knew enough English to be very helpful and gracious to us, and they were very accommodating to a couple of middle-aged Americans new to Italy. The gelato was magnificato(!), and the breakfast offerings were also quite good. Thank you very much for making us feel at home!!

Yelp
I wanted to try this place when I saw that the Gelato was "flat". I had heard that real Gelato isn't whipped up high like you see many shops do. Was this real? I'm not sure, but it was very creamy and delicious, so maybe! We ended up (after sampling) ordering the regular Pistachio and the "Best Seller" Pistachio cream sauce over their original Gelato flavor. It was like a vanilla/hazelnut-ish. I think I would order the plain flavor again! It was the perfect combination of a subtle vanilla flavor with the hint of nutty.

Yelp
My experience at Gelateria Badiani was phenomenal. The small shop is open every day of the week with long hours, to ensure you can get your gelato fix any time. Sunday through Thursday the hours are 9 AM until 8:30 PM, while on Friday and Saturday, it is open from 9 AM until 11 PM. Typing in the address instead of the store name made it much easier to locate: Via dei Tosinghi 12R, Firenze. Luckily, you do not need a reservation since the shop operates on a walk-in basis. Inside, there is plenty of seating, which I have not seen at other gelaterias. There are around seven tables, including one booth bench with other chairs surrounding five tables. The menu for coffee and crepes is plastered on the wall, while the flavors for gelato are displayed in a glass case, making it easy to browse before ordering. The clientele consisted mostly of locals and large groups of young girls which gave the space an authentic feel. As I walked into Gelateria Badiani, the first thing that struck me was the charming atmosphere and adorable pink and green walls. Although the pouring rain outside had initially made me hesitant about getting gelato, after I stepped inside my appetite returned. Badiani also served coffee, alcohol, and both sweet and savory crepes, making it more than just a gelataria. It was a perfect cafe for any craving. I ended up choosing two flavors: Tiramisu and La DolceVita, which is described as "Buontalenti with hazelnut and chocolate sauce, our winning flavor at Gelato Festival." This was the best part of my experience here, it blew me away. My favorite part was the chunks of chocolate sauce hidden in every bite. The Tiramisu flavor was also amazing, it had bites of lady fingers within the gelato. The service was extremely fast and efficient. Both servers who helped me were welcoming and happy to offer recommendations. The price for two scoops in a cone was 4.19 euros, which felt reasonable for the high quality. I'd rate my experience a 9/10, I will be returning.

Yelp
We were recommended to this gelato place by a local. They're famous for their buontalenti gelato which is cream based. It is very creamy and sweet. Their gelato texture is different than other gelato because it's creamier and fluffier - almost tastes like I am eating whipped cream in ice cream form. I tried the pistachio one (it's topped with pistachio chocolate on top), hazelnut (it's topped with hazelnut chocolate on top), and coffee. The ones topped with chocolate were so so sweet. I was glad I got coffee to balance out the sweetness. Overall, this is unique gelato but too sweet and heavy for me.

Yelp
Badiani is, and always will be, my favorite gelateria in Florence. I was lucky to live nearby when studying abroad in Florence a few years ago, so therefore came here a lot. I just revisited it last week on a return trip to Italy, and it is still just as wonderful. There are lots of flavor choices, and they're all so creamy and delicious. Cremino is one of my favorite flavors, but it's always so hard to choose. Unlike in the city center, you won't hear much English at Badiani, because the tourists don't come here. It's too far for them, but it's really not that bad of a walk or bus ride (the 17 stops right in front!). I've told friends who have visited Florence to go here, and they never do. Trust me, the extra walk is worth it. They're open until at least midnight, so just come here late at night after dinner! Some ordering advice if you're not from around these parts: you pay at the cash register for the size you want, and then are given a receipt. You then take that to the gelato cases, make your hard decision, and give the receipt to someone behind the counter, telling them the flavors you want and if you want a cup or a cone. If you're in Florence, just do yourself a favor and get to Badiani ASAP!

Yelp
Amazing place for delicious ice cream! Best ice cream place in Florence! What is most amazing is they have a famous vanilla based ice cream that is so amazing and the recopie is 500 years old! Staff are friendly and overall amazing experience.

Yelp
Looking for the best gelato in Firenze? Well Badiani is not to miss. I have recently discovered this gelateria / bar and it is on my go-to gelateria list ! I have to come here a lot becuase they have such a wide selection of flavors, I want to try them all, well all the ones that do not have noci / nociola (be careful if you are allergic to nuts, because a lot of the flavors secretly contain them ... so always ask!). So far the flavors that I have tried are: mint, dark chocolate, yogurt, black sesame, honey and milk, amaretto cherry, and rice. All are amazing, I would suggest trying the black sesame because it is an unusual flavor and quite good pared with yogurt. This is a very clean modern style bar. Remember to pay first, then get your cone/cup at the bar with your receipt. And they are open on Sunday !!! A perfect day to come, as Ren X. says because you can also check out the outdoor market around the stadium. The gelato here is on the more expensive side ..... which is usually a turn off for me, but this is one of the few gelaterias in Florence where it is worth it.

Yelp
Buontalenti is the special only serving at this place . Dark chocolate , pistachio, wild berries were all great

Yelp
Badiani is famous for their buontalenti gelato. It's not vanilla flavored, it's cream flavored. Come on--how could that not be delicious? But all the flavors are delicious. The texture is what's so different about Badiani. It's ridiculously rich and creamy, but still airy, somehow. Badiani is a bit out of the way if you're in central Florence, but it's worth a trip.

Yelp
This place is a hike for the usual tourist but it's amazing. As a student studying abroad, we'd walk here several times a week. They don't speak too much English but you can try an "assaggio" (taste) of any flavor you'd like. Every time I'd get a different one, they are all great! Love love love.

Yelp
Its the best Gelato I ever had in Italy. I have tried gelato in different places, and all of them could be said above average ice cream. This place, however, is DIFFERENT from what u expect from ice cream. Gelato here tastes like frozen fresh cream!! After a con of gelato the I realized that i have the real gelato. Top notch. Price is cheap too. Though its far from city central, but definitely worth to be there. It didnt take too long for me to find since I used a bike. Recommended, so good, i like it Ice cream:5/10 Average Gelato: 6.5/10 (most of italian gelato, including Amorino) This place: 9/10( its a surprise)

Yelp
I went to Badiani with a group of students in search of pastries. I am a huge fan of sweets and when I walked into Badiani I was in awe. They have the biggest selection of sweets I have seen so far in Florence. The gelato bar took up most of their counter and I would say they had about thirty different flavors. That's by far the widest selection I have come across. They had everything from fruity flavors, to nutty flavors, to the most decadent chocolates. A tip for the gelato bar: you have to pay before you order and hand the slip to the person scooping. I got the second smallest size which was 2.50 euro, which is normal. However, with that size you get to choose up to three flavors which makes it a extremely good deal. We also sampled some pastries. Again the selection was extensive and included fruit flavored, chocolate flavored, and rum flavored treats. They also have a refrigerated section for cakes, parfaits, and mousses. If you have a sweet tooth, this is your paradise!

Yelp
Il miglior gelato del mondo! Badiani offers the best gelato that I have ever eaten in my life... and there has been a lot of it. I am a die-hard pistacchio fan so when I can choose three different types of pistacchio, I reach cloud 9. Aside from the deliciousness of the pistacchi, there is buontalenti that has been chosen as the best by a variety of palettes, as well as a slew of other options. I have yet to try any of the other sweets here, as I always come here dead set on getting incredible gelato. There is a large and comfortable seating area in the back of this trendy gelateria/pasticceria that you do not typically find in others. This is one of the larger gelaterie in Firenze, and that being said, it is not exactly in the center. However, if you do try to to make it out here to taste the most phenomenal gelato in the world, do not do it on a Tuesday. I cannot begin to say how sad I was the sporadic times that we have driven by this place and it was closed.

Yelp
Thankfully my husband and I live near Badiani but just far enough that we can't go there every day because if that were the case, we would be 200 pounds each. I direct people to Badiani even if they're on the opposite side of the city because it's well worth the hike. Best gelato ever. If you like cheesecake, go right for it! I also highly recommend the ricotta and fig and riso (if you're into rice treats). Really though, whatever you get will be amazing.

Yelp
On my last night in Florence I decided to try this place for gelato, I saw they had a mini cone. It was too cute to pass up. I ended up getting a pistachio one, it was delish and not overwhelming because of the portion size. The inside is vanilla topped with melted pistachio but it didn't taste like pistachio more like chocolate. Still good though, the cone was crunchy soft.

Yelp
three words: death. by. chocolate. that is ALL that is needed to be said. granted this is out of the city center and will take time for tourists to track there. it is WORTH IT! best thing? they have sunday markets just outside stadio franchi, it's a nice walk too. you get to see alot of the "real" residential florence. It's also quiet near campo di marte, easy access if you have the will to eat amazing gelato! I would rank this as one of my top gelaterias all around italy. their "la dolce vita" and "buontalenti" for me are their signature marks. you gotta try it. desserts wise, my god also amazing. try the zabaione. forget tiramisu, you can't come to italy and not eat zabaione. and it's not expensive, compared to tourist traps in the city center, this is nothing. In other recommendations, try these gelaterias as well in florence: 1. gelateria la carraia - strawberry cheesecake. 2. gelateria de medici - out of the way, tourists hardly ever find this hidden gem, but if you are going to see one of the fortresses, this is worth a stop. 3. gelateria cavini - this is another one out of the way. but my GOD you would die of happiness after eating their gelato. great hidden gem among the locals. fantastic flavors and a wide selection. try the zuppa inglese, they also make a buontalenti as well. 4. gelateria vivoli - without say, everyone knows this. they are just simply great. but cmon you coulda filled up the cup a lil more? 5. gelateria dei neri - it's good. i would rank this the last. try their gelato on the brioche. forget perche no and grom. that sh** is for tourists!

Yelp
While living in Florence I made it my mission to try all the best gelaterias in town. After six months of daily gelato consumption, I determined that Badiani's is Florence's best gelateria. It's located near the soccer stadium so it's a bit out of the way if you're in the city center but so well worth the bus ride/walk over. What makes Badiani stand out is the consistency of the gelato and the distinct flavors they offer. They offer around 15 different flavors that are all perfectly creamy yet far from milky or watery. I did not try a flavor I didn't like and I tried most of them. I often ordered the pistachio or the tricolore. They also offer an amazing selection of cakes and other dessert as well as coffee. It's a perfect place to have a gelato and get some work done as they have a sizeable seating area. It's better than Cavini a couple blocks away and it's better than Gelateria de Medici (which is also a must try). The place was always clean and despite the large crowd they attract it's very spacious inside. This place is a must-try when visiting Florence.
