Extremely nice located Monestary (1106). The main church is under renovation (roof). It is also the burial place of more than 20 Georgian Kings, Bishops and Saints. Famous was also the Academy (1106-1510). The plane can be reached by car over a curvy road.

Nestled near Kutaisi in western Georgia, Gelati Monastery (Gelati Monastery and Academy) stands as a testament to the country's rich history and cultural heritage. Founded in the 11th century by King David the Builder, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is not just a stunning architectural complex, but also a former educational center that played a pivotal role in the Georgian Golden Age. Gelati Monastery exemplifies the architectural style of the Golden Age, characterized by balanced proportions, smooth stonework, and decorative blind arches. The complex comprises several buildings, each contributing to its visual grandeur. The imposing Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, with its central dome and elaborate facade, is a masterpiece in itself. Gelati Monastery is open to the public with an entrance fee. Dress modestly, particularly if visiting during a religious service. The monastery is easily accessible from Kutaisi by car, taxi, or public transportation. A visit to Gelati Monastery is a rewarding experience for any traveler. It's a place to appreciate architectural beauty, delve into Georgia's rich history, and marvel at the artistic legacy of a bygone era.

We visited the place at sunset, it was getting dark and we couldn't stay for long. The place is so sacred with a beautiful view over the town. The big church and the small one are under renovation, there were scaffolding all around the interior walls but the visible murals were breathtaking, so were the icons. The history in the place can be observed through these astonishing art pieces. This place should be on top of the list when you visit Kutaisi.

Impressive monastery which is also one of the main tourist highlights in Georgia. A 20 minute drive from Kutaisi, located high up on top of a hill overlooking a valley the atmosphere there is impressive and kind of serene, at least when there are not too tourists. In October 2023 the main building was scaffolded inside and outside but still accessible.

Very beautiful and sacred place with a lot of history and gorgeous views. You can place candles to wish for health for the people alive in your life or place candles for the deceased. You don't need to buy tickets to enter, it's completely free. A must see for anyone traveling to kutaisi.

Beautiful unesco site, and place of extreme importance to the history and culture of Georgia. Can’t believe entry was free 😳 There are extensive renovations atm, so lots of scaffolding which obscures the frescoes in the main building, but still lots to see. A must visit on any trip to Kutaisi!
