Update again: it keeps getting worse and worse. Ever since the Gelsons chain sold to a Japanese company, every few months, they stop carrying a good desirable product, and replace it with a cheap disgusting alternative. As if the profice wasn’t already bad enough, they started carrying a lot of this Melissa’s brand and decreases the amount of Frog Hollow. Melissa’s produce is tasteless garbage. They also stopped carrying Grillo’s pickles and replaced them with Mark Wahlburgs gross brand of pickles. I swear I’m about to start stealing from this place. Gelsons sucks!!!
Update: it’s just getting comically ridiculous at this point. The selection of just about every isle has gone wayyyy down (especially the produce) while the prices have just become a comedy skit.
I’ve been exclusively shopping here since 2010 and I’m very observant (ocd) and detect patterns relatively quickly. Ever since the Gelsons chain was sold a few years ago to a foreign company, I started noticing gradual price increases as the selection of boutique items began to simultaneously decrease. A lot of the niche items I would come here for were not longer being offered and the quality of the produce began to dwindle dramatically. They used to have the best fresh squeezed organic orange juice and organic precut fruit cups. Now, there are very limited organic selections and no organic orange juice at all. Not only that but much of the produce is in terrible condition because their purchasers are buying cheaper less fresh produce. The apples aren’t crisp, the grapefruits are pathetic, they now buy really bad kiwis, and precut pineapples are an absolute gamble every time. I live walking distance from here and have finally gotten to the point where I don’t even go to Gelsons at all anymore because the price no longer reflects the quality. Every time I’d shop here it’d turn into two errands, one errand to come but my groceries, and another errand to make returns of spoiled pineapples and mealy apples. I eventually gave up and started shopping at Ralph’s and I must say Ralph’s has actually done a very good job at upgrading their higher end selection, though I still go to Whole Foods for my raw meats and poultry. I still remember one of my “goodbye Gelsons” breaking points. I’d gone to Gelsons to do some shopping and noticed the island at the front of the store near the deli which used to have tons of adorable boutique brands was cluttered with big brands you’d get at wal-mart like Heinz and Kraft and that sort of junk that no one who can afford Gelsons would ever consume. Then I went to cvs to run another errand and noticed that their island was filled with nothing but organic small brands that are much healthier than the corporate slop Gelsons was so proudly and in my opinion offensively showcasing for their customers. I feel like the company has lost touch with its customer demographic and is getting cheap and cutting corners as if we wouldn’t notice.
