5 Places Where You Can See A Celebrity

"You could spend your entire vacation sitting in restaurants from Malibu to Beverly Hills, but your best shot at seeing a famous person in LA is going to this grocery store in Franklin Village. It’s totally normal to lock eyes with Aubrey Plaza at the deli counter or reach for almond milk at the same time as Jon Hamm. Even if both of those scenarios sound like outtakes from your dreams." - brant cox

"You can spend years sitting in every restaurant from Malibu to Beverly Hills, but your best shot at actually seeing a famous person in LA might be at a grocery store in Franklin Village. It’s here where locking eyes with Alison Brie at the deli counter or reaching for almond milk at the same time as Jon Hamm aren’t just outtakes from your bedtime fantasies, they’re real things that happen regularly. This store is a wonderful place not only to shop for quality groceries, but also to enjoy a fresh and healthy meal on the go. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the staff is always kind, attentive, and ready to help. A perfect spot for both everyday shopping and a quick, wholesome bite.

Google
The grocery store was immaculate, with every shelf perfectly organized. Antonio, the bagger, always greets us with a smile and is eager to assist. The only downside was the removal of the bakery seating area, but it didn’t detract from an otherwise pleasant visit.

Google
Gelson’s has the best produce reliably all year round! As an example we had the most amazing melon. So good I bought two! I always come to Gelson‘s for fruits and vegetables. They may be a little more in price, but they’re totally worth it

The checkout lines are always ridiculously long. Management never seems to notice or care. . The person who made my pizza on this visit needs better training. She's helped me in the deli department before and had no idea what shaved cold cuts were. She tried to rip them like an animal with her hands!? This time she made a BBQ Chicken pizza, and it seemed like it was her first time making a pizza. She couldn't cut the pizza very well and ended up tearing that into slices with her hands too!? This was nothing like the Wolfgang Puck Pizza from Gelson's that we get all the time. Rudy makes a great pizza! This person, not so much.

Update again: it keeps getting worse and worse. Ever since the Gelsons chain sold to a Japanese company, every few months, they stop carrying a good desirable product, and replace it with a cheap disgusting alternative. As if the profice wasn’t already bad enough, they started carrying a lot of this Melissa’s brand and decreases the amount of Frog Hollow. Melissa’s produce is tasteless garbage. They also stopped carrying Grillo’s pickles and replaced them with Mark Wahlburgs gross brand of pickles. I swear I’m about to start stealing from this place. Gelsons sucks!!! Update: it’s just getting comically ridiculous at this point. The selection of just about every isle has gone wayyyy down (especially the produce) while the prices have just become a comedy skit. I’ve been exclusively shopping here since 2010 and I’m very observant (ocd) and detect patterns relatively quickly. Ever since the Gelsons chain was sold a few years ago to a foreign company, I started noticing gradual price increases as the selection of boutique items began to simultaneously decrease. A lot of the niche items I would come here for were not longer being offered and the quality of the produce began to dwindle dramatically. They used to have the best fresh squeezed organic orange juice and organic precut fruit cups. Now, there are very limited organic selections and no organic orange juice at all. Not only that but much of the produce is in terrible condition because their purchasers are buying cheaper less fresh produce. The apples aren’t crisp, the grapefruits are pathetic, they now buy really bad kiwis, and precut pineapples are an absolute gamble every time. I live walking distance from here and have finally gotten to the point where I don’t even go to Gelsons at all anymore because the price no longer reflects the quality. Every time I’d shop here it’d turn into two errands, one errand to come but my groceries, and another errand to make returns of spoiled pineapples and mealy apples. I eventually gave up and started shopping at Ralph’s and I must say Ralph’s has actually done a very good job at upgrading their higher end selection, though I still go to Whole Foods for my raw meats and poultry. I still remember one of my “goodbye Gelsons” breaking points. I’d gone to Gelsons to do some shopping and noticed the island at the front of the store near the deli which used to have tons of adorable boutique brands was cluttered with big brands you’d get at wal-mart like Heinz and Kraft and that sort of junk that no one who can afford Gelsons would ever consume. Then I went to cvs to run another errand and noticed that their island was filled with nothing but organic small brands that are much healthier than the corporate slop Gelsons was so proudly and in my opinion offensively showcasing for their customers. I feel like the company has lost touch with its customer demographic and is getting cheap and cutting corners as if we wouldn’t notice.

Google
Fresh produce and great selection. The prices are very high, and the three star rating reflects the inadequate staffing at the registers - THERE IS ALWAYS A LONG LINE at this store, even though customers pay more than anywhere else to shop. The store is pretty clean. The bakery is old-school, and uninspiring. Sushi is subpar - because they don't know how to cook sushi rice.

Google
Stood in line for eleven minutes at the counter of the deli, there are workers walking around but no one seems to want to address the people in line. At least acknowledge that we are all standing here waiting for a long while for service. This store continues to be on the higher end of food prices. I live locally and it’s inconvenient to go elsewhere but I will go elsewhere. Lazy Acres is down the street and prices are similarly high but the staff are far more kind and attentive and responsive.

Google
Great store with a decent variety of products. They also have options for a specific product which smaller grocery stores don't have room for. There are sales here on some products and no additional rewards is needed to get those discounts. There is a large selection of premade meals and they have a poke bar. Prices are reasonable for the quality of products that are offered and the check out line moves fast.

Yelp
Amazing service from Mayra! Extremely attentive and quick service. Very friendly and helpful. If you buy snacks she'll even put them on a plate for you.

Yelp
So have you ever felt like just "bellying up to a bar"? Well it's as close as your friendly supermarket in Hollywood. Gelson's has created a perfect setting for just pulling up a stool, before or after doing your grocery shopping. They offer an extensive list of wines by the glass with an affordable price point, they even offer Rombauer chardonnay by the glass (thanks to the wonder of Corivan, a device that allows one to siphon wine out of a bottle without uncorking it, thereby maintaining its freshness). Our server was very cordial and knowledgeable while making us feel at home. They have an excellent bar menu that pairs perfectly with your choice of beverage. The classic hamburger was cooked perfectly medium rare and the bun (though I wish they would toast it a little) was very tasty. We also chose shrimp skewers with a nice glaze and very good crab cakes. I would skip the potato pucks they call fries, they are way overcooked and bland. Do yourself a favor and stop by just for a glass or two and see for yourself how comfy and inviting it is to hang at your local grocery store bar! Nice concept! Thank you for this great experience!! Thank you!

Yelp
So unexpectedly good! I wish they would update their wine menu regularly to feature some stuff that you see on the shelf - that way you could taste it at the bar and go pick it up right after! Would be a great way to help me decide from their selection. Same with beer. All in all - Service was awesome, beers were fresh, if you're in the area just stop in!

Yelp
The service, the ambiance, the food, everything is great. Mayra took this experience to the next level.

Yelp
This is the best bar in town. Mayra is incredible and was very accommodating. We were able to watch the Dodger game and have good food and drinks.

Yelp
Don't miss Otto at Gelson's Wine Bar! Sip while your groceries are packed, no waiting at the register! This is for your pleasure and for your convenience. FIVE STARS. ! BONUS POINTS: Otto remembered me after only one time here months ago. Blew my mind! Excellent service with an amazing Franklin Village vibe. Don't miss it!

Yelp
I thought it was peculiar for a grocery store to open a wine bar. I was wrong! I love stopping in here. Otto and Alicia are absolute delights and make everyone feel at home. A true neighborhood gem... you're likely to meet other wonderful people who live nearby and have a great chat. 10/10.

Yelp
It's the Gelsons Wine Bar. What more can you say? Great service. Great prices. This is now my main spot.

Yelp
Otto provided great service today. This is a great wine and beer bar! They will not let you tip because they consider it to be a grocery service. The prices are cheap $7 beers. On Saturday, the beers are only $5. They close at 8:30 pm, but I highly recommend coming here.

Yelp
Great beer selection. Otto and Alicia are awesome. Nice way to unwind after pushing the shopping cart around.

Yelp
This has been the best addition. I adore all of the bar staff including Otto and Mayra. They are true professionals but most notably they are kind, know you're order, etc and so on. I feel so comfortable and calm when I come in. FYI- the Poke Tower is the best thing in my opinion. All in all a perfect 100%.

Yelp
It's 10:55am on a Saturday and Yelp shows they are open at noon and currently closed. One day in the produce section every single bag of tangerines had a lot of moldy fruit, every last one. The romaine girl romaine is almost always mostly brown. The bakery has the best almond croissants but they never include bakery pastry tissue sheets so you can avoid getting your hands all sticky. I recently got very sick from the turkey chili at the hot food bar. It's great chili but unfortunately there are just too many dirty hands touching the area. The crispy tempura sushi continues to be the opposite of crispy, but cold mushy and gross. Details are everything at a store like this.

Yelp
A burger medium rare that was burnt on outside. And I'm not exaggerating the worst French fries I've ever had. Cold and crispy with no taste and difficult to chew. It was 8pm and they were close to closing. Maybe just reheated it? Terrible. Affordable drinks. Come for a beer. Do not eat

Yelp
Myra Andy the Gelson bar is wonderful. We come on Fridays after work and she always greets us with a smile! Best place to go after work.

Yelp
A surprisingly fun experience. Alicia and Sean are terrific servers. The drinks and food are excellent.
