We had a lovely stay at the General Lewis Inn over the weekend. The room was quite cozy and immaculately clean, and service was outstanding. Everyone was so friendly and made us feel right at home. Dinner went above and beyond our expectations, and the trout was the best we've ever had! Highly recommend. The red grouper was phenomenal as well. Dessert was heavenly - the fraisier cake is a must try! Brunch was also wonderful. We enjoyed our Eggs Norwegian and crab cakes. Can't wait to visit again!

The Inn is lovely. Grounds are pretty and well maintained. We had a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the beautiful gardens in the back. The rooms are small but very nice, with plenty of room to unpack. Service was excellent. Dinner in the restaurant was outstanding. Cozy bar with good craft cocktails! Nice terrace and porch to enjoy a drink outside.

Google
An absolutely fantastic experience at this delightful hotel. It’s historic and very interesting. Their open door policy lets you look in any open room so it’s fun to explore. But the best part is the service. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. Lovey porch and outdoor seating. Great bar lounge and the brunch was delicious.

Beautiful historic hotel! Wonderfully friendly staff. We felt right right at home and plan to return soon. The bar area is really nice. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays so we didn’t have a chance to try it. But there are several good restaurants within a short walk.

Excellent stay. Very friendly staff . Will definitely try to go back sometime.|Room very comfortable. No elevator but staff helped with our bags. We had an excellent meal in the restaurant- grilled trout|And lamb chops, both cooked perfectly.|And a very friendly , attentive waitress.|Been on the road for 3 nights and this was by far our best meal.

Perfect, quaint historic Inn! Has an amazing restaurant and lobby bar. Staff are so attentive and helpful and the ambiance can’t be beat! We stayed in an historic room with updated decor that retained period furniture. Beautiful styling throughout, we can’t wait to come back! (Pictured is the swordfish our 9 year ordered without sauce, she loved it!)

Stopped here on a whim during our anniversary trip. Food was great and well presented. Service was quick, the ambiance was lovely for a Sunday morning brunch. 10/10 would recommend.

Yelp
Amazing meal, best on our 10 day trip to DC, Maryland and W. Virginia. I had the tuna which was superb and only outdone by the best polenta I've ever had.

Yelp
Haven't been to this inn for almost 10 years and in between it's changed ownership and fixed up although only a few rooms are actually renovated. A very charming historic inn right in town. Nice front covered porch with seating. Plenty of parking. Ok wifi. There is a bar and restaurant serving brunch and dinner. We are on the second floor in a non-renovated Queen-bed room but it's in fine shape, nicely decorated, clean with plenty of outlets, including a usb charging station with 4 ports. Lighting is superb, wooden floors with area rugs, two sides windows even though not the end room, with a long entry way which gives the room a more spacious feeling. Some area for improvement: the heating is very loud, heats up the room nicely but quite noisy every 20 minutes or so. And the shower-head can really use an upgrade (it not difficult to just change a simple non clogged shower-head!). Breakfast is included served in the lobby but very basic, just muffins with coffee/tea (our last day there was a tart).

Yelp
Special occasion? This is the place for memories. Wonderful service, mixologists at the bar are creative, and the holidays there are magnificent. This is the sort of place you want to enjoy with close friends. Have a cocktail in the lounge before getting seated in their dining room. Wait staff scripts specials- take note as these are seasonally based from the freshest seasonal items locally. Dessert.....yes, leave room! Their pastry chef makes lovely traditional options like apple tart and hot fudge brownie, and seasonal swaps like berry cobbler or pumpkin crème brûlée. I am looking forward to returning on my next visit to the area.

Yelp
The General Lewis is a unique hotel with a nice restaurant and bar. The location is superb as it is located in walking distance to nearly all of Historic Downtown Lewisburg. The hotel is historic and full of charm. During our stay there was an outdoor concert in the courtyard, which was free to hotel guests. The hotel also left an adorable welcome basket for check in which included spring water, cookies, and a guide to the town. The bed was rather stiff but not uncomfortable. The bathroom was adequate but dated. The bath amenities included robes, slippers, and toiletries. The staff were friendly and attentive. The hotel offered complimentary breakfast sweets and coffee. We enjoyed our stay and would return again if in the area.

Yelp
Only there once but had a very comfortable and pleasant brunch (only available on weekends). Spicy bloody Mary excellent as were the eggs Norwegian and eggs Benedict for the two of us. Zoe provided excellant service. backyard must be nice in warm weather.

Yelp
What a fun find in Lewisburg. We are out of doors and enjoyed the shrimp and grits immensely. Great Bloody Mary. Will definitely come again if in the area.

Yelp
Did not stay or eat at Historic General Lewis Inn but the dining section looked romantic. Visited Thistle Lounge inside the Inn, which is a cute small lounge with a fireplace. It's right around the corner on the left side after you enter from the front door. This would be a good place for friends to catch up or for a casual date. The menu includes creative cocktails, beers, sodas, and wine. Cocktails cost $13. The bartender was very helpful in choosing a drink. Tyler Davidson, the lead bartender makes all of the ingredients in the cocktails from scratch except the liqueurs. We arrived on a Sunday night around 8pm. Tried The Ol Razzle Dazzle, which contains Japanese whiskey, house rum blend, rosé + raspberry cordial, Ruby port, and lime. They will say it is their sweetest cocktail drink, and it really does not taste that sweet. The whiskey is not that strong. We both liked it. We also tried Catch Me If You Can, which has gin, mezcal, watermelon, CBD amaro, lemon, Pimm's, hibiscus bitters, and cinnamon. It has a tart, mildly sweet flavor with the CBD amaro flavor being predominant. Couldn't taste the cinnamon. The CBD is a local source and Tyler Davidson makes the CBD Amaro himself. The cocktail drinks are pretty looking, garnished with a dehydrated lemon. Thistle Lounge is a great place if you are looking to try a unique cocktail drink!

Yelp
Charming place in a cool little town with fantastic food. What more could you ask for?

Yelp
As we proudly celebrated the 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, it is with a heart full of dismay that I write about the bigotry and intolerance my family experienced Saturday July 31, 2021 at the General Lewis Inn in Lewisburg, WV. We bought tickets in advance to attend an outdoor concert sponsored by the Inn. We drove two hours to attend the event to support a friend who was playing in the band. My husband who is handicapped uses a scooter for mobility. He called in advance to see if the location could accommodate him and he was assured by the staff that the venue was accessible. Upon arrival, we entered the Inn through the side door, I assume this is considered the handicapped entrance (it is not labeled), and made our way to the check-in stand to obtain our wristbands. My husband stated to the woman selling tickets and giving out wristbands, that he would not be able to enter the venue through the back door due to many steps and no ramp. The woman said that was fine that we would need to go outside and access the venue from the side yard. The side yard had a rope gate with a sign attached that said "Do Not Enter. Enter through the lobby door". The side yard is a grassy sloping hill that is in no way accommodating to a mobility scooter. I was very concerned that my husband would not be able to make it up the hill so me and my son followed him as he attempted to make the grade. All of a sudden we hear a woman shout to us "You cannot go that way, turn around and go through the lobby". I noticed it was the same woman who sold us our tickets and gave us our wristbands. I said back to her "We are with him and you told us to go this way". She said "I hear you, do not take another step, now turn around and go through the lobby". I said, "I am his wife and you told us to go this way". She stated again "I hear you, I don't care, do not take another step, now turn around and enter through the lobby". My husband continued up the hill as me, my son and his friend from Georgia turned around to go back down the hill in complete disbelief at the demand to leave my husband. I told my son to stay outside to make sure my husband made it up the hill. As we re-entered the building I can hear the woman say to the crowd of attendees, "you can make as many signs as you want, but no one will read them". I then went to the reception desk to ask who was this woman because I wanted to file a complaint with the owner. To my complete disbelief the receptionist said "She IS the owner". I was stunned. Not just me but several of the other people standing in the lobby who witnessed this unbelievable display of ignorance. The owner's name is Sparrow Huffman. When Mrs. Huffman saw me talking to a couple in the lobby about what just happened, Mrs. Huffman came over to me and said "I don't understand your problem, there is a posted sign that says to enter from the lobby". I said that I was aiding my handicapped husband as he made his way up the hillside. Mrs. Huffman stated that she only gave permission to my husband to go up the hillside and that she allowed him to enter before the other patrons. Then Mrs. Huffman said "why are you antagonizing me." Astonished, I told her that I was the one being antagonized. Mrs. Huffman then stated "You know you don't have to be here". I took this comment as a veiled way of her asking us to leave. I asked her if she had any family members who were handicapped or in a situation where they had to use a wheelchair. Seething, Mrs. Huffman looked me squarely in the eyes and loudly said "You will enter through the lobby with everyone else" and walked away. As someone with a husband who is disabled and a mother who was a quadriplegic due to Multiple Sclerosis and confined to a wheelchair for 27yrs, I have NEVER experienced a level of ignorant behavior like this. I have NEVER had such an intolerant, bigoted, uncompromising, my way or the highway attitude in the thirty-five years I have been aiding a handicapped person. Yes, Mrs. Huffman, as you said "you don't need to be here", I urge all who read this to avoid the General Lewis Inn and the sister establishment, Stardust Cafe, also located in Lewisburg WV.

Yelp
BE AWARE, even with a positive COVID test, they will not even change your dates (not cancel just change dates), so they have a heckuva cash cow going on here... kiss that $600 goodbye. hope you choke on it

Karen M.

Yelp
Charming setting from the moment you walk up the steps and glimpse the ample patio. Candles on the mantle inside create a romantic ambience. Modern art adorns the walls. Nightly specials match timeless favorites. Innovative cocktails. Extensive wine list. Excellent service.

Yelp
I scouted out this inn as a possible trip location for our group on the recommendation of a member. If you look at my previous reviews, you will see that I very rarely post negative reviews. Unfortunately, this will be one of them. Our stay was a mixed bag which I expected because of Covid. It is certainly a difficult time for lodging and restaurants. There was one incident that disturbed me deeply. Our room had a mouse issue that we shared with the front desk and with housekeeping. I understand that mice can be a nuisance in any establishment and that is not the main reason that we were disturbed. We very discretely gave our mangled chocolate to the front desk with the bite marks and shards of foil. There were multiple inn people at the desk who heard our concerns. We were told that something would be done. We also spoke with Pam and Emma who were both very nice and professional. We waited to hear from someone at the Inn about the incident, but never did. We mentioned it again at the end of our stay and expected to eventually hear from the Inn - we did not. I e-mailed the inn a couple of weeks after our stay and received no response. I then messaged the inn and finally heard back from Sparrow who promised that I could expect a response that week - the response never came. I find this very unusual. Were we not believed? We wanted nothing from the inn. We were not looking for any compensation. What we thought would have been appropriate was some acknowledgement from those running the inn. It never came. How can you run a fancy establishment with high rates and then blow off a guest who had a mouse in their room? The rest of our stay was uneven, but OK. The inn's mixologist was spectacular and friendly. He went out of his way to help get us an outdoor table. He is a gem. The biscuits and tomato bisque were stellar. Emma and Pam were very friendly. The chicken was good, but the rest of the food was just OK. This was also expected during Covid. However, we got the feeling that some of the staff were simply tolerating us which we found odd. We are always polite, respectful, and friendly. We followed all Covid protocols. There were little things that seemed a little harsh like not being allowed in the Stardust Cafe at two minutes before opening even though the door was open and there was no closed sign. The staff did graciously let my wife use the bathroom for which we were thankful. We were also denied breakfast when we came down a few minutes before 9:00. That time is awfully late for some of us early risers. The muffins and coffee are a nice touch for those that are able to eat them. There did not seem to be any accommodation or flexibility. We were also told that you get one cookie and that is it for your stay. Friends had told us that they had a few during their stay so we were a little confused by that. These are small things, but they added up for us. I got the impression that ownership does not care about the guests or that there is a lack of communication between staff and ownership.

Yelp
Cocktails, brunch, welcoming employees, convenient location to rest your head and explore surrounding areas - The Historic General Lewis Inn has it all. A small group of us (one couple has a 15-month-old baby) recently had the best overnight getaway in Lewisburg with HGLI as our hub. LOCATION - beautiful setting where you can easily walk to all of downtown Lewisburg (free parking). The rooms are decorated with pretty and unique details. Our room was small but faced the front entrance with a lovely view and delightful pink tile in the bathroom. We appreciated the plush towels and soft robes. The coffee cart on our floor was a nice addition. Enjoy a cocktail on the traditional front porch with rocking chairs or relaxing back patio. FOOD - our server was fantastic. She was attentive but didn't hover and accommodating to our needs. The food - ALL delicious! The biscuits were so flaky and perfect that we ordered a second round! The mimosa was a balanced cava and fresh squeezed OJ without being too sweet. And, I don't recall the last time I had such perfect poached eggs. Items ordered: Maryland Crab Cakes, Eggs Norwegian, Hearty Fries Potatoes, The Farmer and The Caprese omelettes. We loved the details and special touches such as listing the local farms, chefs and even the ladies who supplies the beautiful fresh floral center pieces in the front of the menu. FINAL THOUGHTS: Good for groups or a romantic getaway. Don't hesitate to book a night (or more) at the Historic General Lewis Inn!

Yelp
I thought I would never leave a review online, but I feel now is the time. Last year my wife and I were looking for a new town to spend our anniversary together and a nice historic hotel. We heard about The General Lewis Inn from a coworker and we gave it a try. We picked Easter weekend since I get an extra day off. We had a great time in Lewisburg and a very nice stay in the inn. It was costly but we were splurging! We had a great dinner and breakfast in their dining room. We decided to go again this year and we made reservations on Christmas Day for Easter weekend again in 2023. We decided to get a better room and live it up! I paid half, which was $300 for one night. Plus tax. I was sent the receipt in my email and 3 weeks later I got my credit card statement. They charged me $400 plus tax. My wife called and got Ashley at the front desk. She told my wife " you should have read the fine print where we may charge extra for a special event " in a snippy attitude. The special event being an annual chocolate festival. It seems to me that the rate change should have been already on their website but it wasn't. They didn't even bother to contact me before they decided to charge me an extra 33%!!! That is the part that rubbed me wrong. They used their "fine print" to justify stealing from me. Luckily I got a refund and didn't pay the 10% "processing fee" I can't in good conscience ever give them my business again. We had a nice time last year but they were already overpriced. I hope this helps any unsuspecting customers.

Emily H.

Yelp
We stayed at the inn for a weekend and included dinner in their restaurant as a treat. From start to finish,we had courteous, professional service. We sat in the dining room but ordered cocktails from the creative, extensive menu of specialty drinks. Ours was wonderful, with a mix of flavors including coconut, lemongrass, and herbs. Dinners were amazing! I had the best lamb chop I've ever had - 4 fingers thick but cooked to perfection. Ingredients are locally sourced, and the quality belies it. Other dishes at our table included bacon wrapped dates, crab hushpuppies, trout, and homemade pesto ravioli. All dishes were outstanding! Our experience was wonderful and we would highly recommend.

Josh J.

Yelp
Take yourself back in time to this Hsitoric Inn with a modern touch. Your first greeted by a friendly hostess, followed by a bar to the left hand side serving some of the best cocktails you'll have in the south. Once you grab your drink you're encouraged to take a seat by the warm and cozy fireplace with classic wood beams overhead providing a truly rustic ambience before you dine in the historic Jefferson dining room. I highly recommend on their brunch menu the biscuits, which were so good that we couldn't even get a picture before scuffing them down!! They come with three different jams and butter, warm but not hot enough to burn your hand. You can smell them baking in the kitchen from your table and it is truly a treat. The service is unmatched and makes it feel like you're in grandma's house with the best food you could possibly eat. For sure one of the top spots in Lewisburg West Virginia, absolutely stop by this establishment for not only a meal but even stay overnight before touring the town!

Mary F.

Yelp
The atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice. We had the filet mignon special with the purple mashed potatoes. The filet was cooked just like we ordered, but it was very small. We tried the local beer which we liked a lot especially the red ale. The almond torte was good as well as the pumpkin cheesecake. For the price, I did not think it was equitable. We've spent far less and had much better food. There was no one in the restaurant but us, so I was disappointed that the temperature of the food was room temperature or cooler. We had great service & the town was very quaint. Very friendly receptionist. Food=above average, but not fabulous.

Joe B.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel with old world charm and modern amenities. No detail has been missed! The whole Inn is beautifully updated while retaining the historical importance of the architecture and feel. The staff were all professional and authentically kind - always asking if we were having a good stay or if we needed anything. They have wonderful signature cocktails at the Thistle Lounge with an exceptional wine list also. Lovely fireplace, elegant ambience and comfortable furniture fill the space and provide a great place to imbibe or just read the paper. The back garden space is an amazing oasis where you can dine seasonally or enjoy a lovely glass of wine. It would be perfect for a wedding or just relaxing. We spent 2 nights out there just enjoying ourselves and meeting other guests. The Restaurant has delicious locally sourced foods including homemade pastas, homemade sausages and local fish and meats. We enjoyed an elegant dinner and two brunches there. The room was casual and elegant with fantastic homemade hand soap, great linens, plush towels and even had robes and slippers. Nice chairs and comfy bed. Honestly, one of the most enjoyable stays I've had in a long time. We are already planning our next stay!!

Emma H.

Yelp
This place has the most beautiful ambiance. The food is fit for royalty and the freshly curated cocktails are out of this world! My favorite place to be in town, hands down!

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Since we checked in on a weekday, the restaurant was not available to us to try, but I do appreciate the inn portion. The front desk person was very courteous and helpful and also didn't mind chatting with us about the area. We were invited to just go in and look at rooms to see which one we would like the best. We picked one on the second floor that had a bed that was relatively low (one room had a bed you might need a step stool to get into) and a small seating area with two wingback chairs. The bathroom was kind of small, but well stocked with everything we needed. There was wi-fi and a tv in the room. There is also a complimentary bottle of spring water in the room. It could very well just be tap water, but the presentation in a pretty blue glass bottle with a cork stopper made it feel special. I am not an expert on antiques, but aside from the A/C, TV, and phone, everything in the room was comfortably old, which makes it feel like home...or a posh guest room at Great Aunt Mildred's house. The bed was covered in a lovely embroidered quilt and had two extra pillows for lounging. All in all, I really enjoyed my stay!

Michael E.

Yelp
Hmmmm...I found the reviews here a bit tough on this place. I really liked it for breakfast. Though I didn't stay here I think the character of the place is just so unique. The walls are filled with some much history...either in the form of paintings, photos, or actual farm implements this place is a one of a kind. Breakfast was good and hardy and affordable. Located up the hill from main street it is close to everything. It is said there are rooms that have ghosts that haunt them and folks have a book they can write in their encounters in....ooohhhhh......scary!!!!!!!! *grin*

Faith R.

Yelp
Delicious trout dinner!!! Fresh Garden Salad accompanied with choice of homemade dressing, we chose bacon blue cheese. Everything was fresh with a beautiful presentation. Warm homemade biscuits and a chocolate mousse dessert topped off our delightful experience! We'd love to return. Thank you, Jay!

Olivia F.

Yelp
It was a great dinner time with family! All the foods were great and our server Jay was really amazing. Very accommodating and relaxing ambiance! :)

Robert A.

Yelp
The best Filet I ever had, the prices are a bit higher than a few places in the area but not bad, but I'm telling you it's worth every penny. Everyone in my group loved what they had. Compliments to the chef.

Holly R.

Yelp
We used to love coming here, both to stay and eat. Came back today for Sunday brunch after a few years away and it's definitely not the same. Mushrooms added (not on menu) to potatoes, took forever to get refills, got a to go order of biscuits and gravy, and the gravy was just poured into a section of a cardboard container, 3 cheese omelet had very little cheese and dried out, 'fresh' fruit had canned peaches and 6 blueberrries. For more than $50. The bartender seemed to have it together, but not the kitchen or wait staff. So sad because we always enjoyed coming here.

Vanessa C.

Yelp
We fell in love with this Inn. I like being able to pick my room when making reservations. Nice having a hallway coffee station near your room. Love the new bar and seating area with fireplace. The Inn's restaurant has some good choices for breakfast and dinner. It's also located near a few really good restaurants and pubs. We've stayed twice now on our way to a ski resort. We'll be back soon.

Mike W.

Yelp
Great place to stay in Lewisburg- we visited for a Graduation at the local Medical school- we were very pleased with the whole experience- our room was on the small side but was comfortable and met our needs- we ate dinner as well as a Monday breakfast and both were exquisitely prepared- recommend either staying here or checking out the awesome dining

Doug M.

Yelp
We love this little hotel, but our favorite part is the amazing cocktail lounge that is really most of the hotel lobby. We are sitting in big wing chairs in front of a beautiful fire. Bartender Tyler crafts his drinks with great cate and creativity. I had a martini made with his own hand-made vermouth (2 actually). Not wanting to go out in cold rain,Tyler recommended a couple of delivery options. So we had a nice Italian dinner in the lounge. Finishing it off with sambuca. Perfect evening. When in Lewisburg, WV stop by the lounge at General Lewis Inn.

Morgan W.

Yelp
Dreamers dream. Perfect mix of history and luxury. Smiley staff, good food, impeccable housekeeping, voluptuous beds, and a FUN bar that's open every night 5-11. Seriously have had some of my most magical nights here.

Robert E.

Yelp
I was riding motorcycle back from disappointing eclipse in NC (rained out) and decided to stop in Lewisburg for the night. It turned out to be a good choice. The hotel is old and very nice. My room has a modern, firm, mattress, an updated bathroom that retained the old tile work, and was quiet and comfortable. The common areas are charming and relaxing. The bar is open every night until 11. The restaurant was only open last days of week (I think Wednesday to Sunday), so as it was Tuesday wasnt able to eat there. But it gets great reviews. Lewisburg is a very small town with a very few restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. You can walk to all of them from this hotel in a few minutes at most. All-in my stay was excellent and it is such a nice change from a hotel chain.

Ricky E.

Yelp
Great place to stay, staff very friendly and accommodating. We had an issue with the TV and it was replaced with a new one. Probably the most relaxed atmosphere, you will ever experience. My only complaint would be is that the unit we stayed in (214) has a tiny bath room with a step up. Also the unit is right at the top of the stairs, lots of activity. I would not recommend this room. I would not recommend an upstairs unit for anyone with an issue of climbing stairs. This was not an issue for us, but did see how it affected others. Hope this review might be helpful, because it was certainly not meant to be negative. We had breakfast in the dining room.......wonderful!

George G.

Yelp
Such a beautiful little place for brunch! Thought the food was really great & exploring afterwards is even better! Day was made when a 95 year old man walked in dressed to the nines in his blue seersucker suit. There's a little shack out back, go in it for a creepy surprise ;-)

Susan D.

Yelp
After finding dining options rather limited in White Sulphur Springs rather limited (aside from the Greenbrier), my husband Rick and I decided to head back to Lewisburg. We'd heard great things about the General Lewis Inn and gave it a try. We both can safely say that this was the best dining experience on our whole WV trip. The General Lewis Inn does Southern cooking right, and believe me, as Meg H. says in her review, it's no hokey put on. The atmosphere here is just right for a wonderful dinner. I hadn't had any good seafood lately, so I tried the trout. Mine was done to perfection. My vegetables definitely were were fresh and not frozen or out of a can. As for Rick, he went for the steak. He gave me a taste and believe me, I hadn't tasted a steak like that since the last time I was in Kansas City. If we're ever back in Lewisburg, we''ll make a meal and a stay at the General Lewis Inn a priority.

Reed R.

Yelp
This is a great find in West Virginia and a wonderful alternative to the Greenbrier being only a few minutes down the road. The hotel has very old charm with unique rooms and antique (looking at least) furnishings that were in good shape. They offered a good rate with a wonderfully friendly staff during my off-season one night stay. Couples beware, older buildings lend themselves to thin walls. Ate dinner and breakfast at their fantastic restaurant and I absolutely loved both delicious southern meals.

Diana C.

Yelp
Very good brunch. Stopped here on a trip. I got some sort of hash that was very good. Hubs got waffles and eggs. Hope to go back as I prefer this to chains.

Julie B.

Yelp
Visiting friends were underwhelmed by the offerings at The Greenbrier (where they were staying). I suggested The General Lewis Inn for local flavor that was open on Sunday. The GLI did not disappoint. We all had the surf and turf special of a filet and fried soft-shell crab (caught that weekend). Roasted red-skinned potatoes with a Parmesan sauce and a vegetable sauté with snap peas, peppers, and mushrooms rounded out the meal. Highly recommend the bleu cheese dressing for the house salad. Bread for the meal was cornbread (with bits of corn baked in) served in mini-cast iron skillets. Tom, our server, was a delight. Dessert was offered, but we were too satiated. It will be worth the return trip to explore that part of the menu. I look forward to a return trip with my family.

Laura H.

Yelp
Friendly staff and beautiful hotel. We went to eat dinner here since new management has taken over and really weren't impressed by the food. The "old" General lewis restaurant seemed a lot more structured and better kept and had better food with more options.

Mona C.

Yelp
At the recommendation of my hotel clerk I waked in without a reservation around 7 pm. I was offered a table right away and enjoyed attentive service throughout the evening. I totally enjoyed the salad and lobster ravioli, prepared by the pastry chef. The prep was creatively presented. I was too full for dessert, but the menu was extensive. The atmosphere was lovely with a historic vibe. I would visit them again!

Yelp
We did not stay at the Inn, but we did the Lewisburg Ghost Tour which starts from here. It cost $20 per person. It was a neat way to get people to pay for what really amounted to a history tour with a few spicy stories to keep you interested for two hours. I got some good exercise and was entertained so I feel it was worth it. But, once was enough.

Yelp
Went back again, don't remember what I had for lunch, but the cobbler was excellent, and the friend I dragged there from Denver agreed with me on the cobbler love. They always have one, the type of fruit changes, order whatever kind they've got. I took a sip of the sweet tea, and I thought it had artificial sweetener in it although my friend thought it was good. So if you're sensitive to artificial sweeteners ask when you order.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere, with cozy fireplace in the bar/lounge. Dining is dependably good, with seasonal, local dishes. In warmer weather, the outside patio is delightful.

Yelp
We stayed at the historic General Lewis Inn and found it to be quaint. The staff was helpful however there were very few amenities during the week and we had to go elsewhere for basic services. Upon check-out they could not split our three bills from the person making the reservations. Management stated that it was their well thought out choice to actually charge your credit card immediately upon making the reservation. Since the card was charged two months ago when he made the reservation the other two couples had to pay our friend rather than the Inn. We told the owner while their policy might be good for the owner it was very inconvenient for the consumer. We will not return to the General Lewis the next time we come to the area and do not recommend the Inn.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place, the decor, the food, the atmosphere. So cozy and the rooms are so nicely decorated to the era of the home. You feel like your going back in time. I come here every year to stay and will continue to come as long as it's around.

Yelp
We have no complaints as to quality of accommodations and service. However I was unaware of 20% gratuity automatically added to all purchases at bar or restaurant. Accommodations were cozy, food excellent and staff efficient and cordial.

Yelp
The Inn was great once upon a time, however time and lack of care have not been kind to it. The place has potential and could be great, but new ownership seems not to be concerned. Peeling wallpaper, threadbare carpet and furniture shows lack of concern. The restaurant is only open on the weekend. They note a morning breakfast, if thats what you call cold cereal, yesterdays muffins and one pot of coffee that may or may not have anything in it. Orange juice? that will be $2. All in all i was horribly disappointed!

Yelp
Great meal and service. Try the blueberry dessert. The prime rib and rainbow trout were both very tasty. The price was very reasonable.

Yelp
My wife and I have a daughter in school in the area and have had to opportunity to both stay and dine at this wonderful inn and restaurant. We have experienced multiple meals at their historic dinning room and have always been delighted by their menu and our choices. We actually found this gem when we were unable to obtain a room at the famous Greenbrier and after visiting the icon in White Sulfur Springs we both agreed that we "lucked out". While the rooms have both been on the small side they were charming, comfortable and reasonable. The bar and common areas were pleasant and during our winter stay quite toasty compliments of the delightful fireplace. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. Has a very "homey" feel not dissimilar to a B&B. While not close to our daughter's school we intend to stay here in the future. The restaurant is a must for any visit to this charming small town. Skip the dated icon down the road and discover a historic gem ....you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended

Yelp
After a mishap at another local restaurant caused them to be unable to accommodate a large wedding party (see my other reviews), 12 of us came to the General Lewis Inn for dinner on a Friday evening. It was definitely a busy night, but with about 30 minutes notice they were able to seat all of us in the main dining room. The space is gorgeous and traditional, with patterned cloth napkins and exposed beams - but authentically antique, not a hokey put-on. The food is SPECTACULAR: seriously, the best fried chicken I've ever had, and every other thing I sampled (trout, french onion soup, prime rib, etc) from others' plates was stellar. Given the size of our party and the trouble we'd already been put through that evening (something that was not in ANY WAY our fault) they threw in a couple of bottles of wine gratis for the table, our pick of anything off the wine list. The waiters were jovial and competent, and the lady in charge, who looks like someone's sweet old grandmother, came out to welcome us personally and thank us for coming. A genuinely five-star experience in the TRUE spirit of Southern charm and hospitality. My only complaint was there were limited options for the vegetarians among us - salads, apps, and one pasta option really rounded it out. But the VERY finicky kids ate fine and everyone was able to find something delicious to eat. Vegetarianism just isn't part of the "traditional" Southern palate. I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the General Lewis Inn to anyone passing through!
